Hidden Wi-Fi - 7 Mozart General

Hi all
I have seen that HTC have just released an app for their phones called "Hidden Wi-Fi" which allows users to connect their HTC WP7 devices to Hidden Wi-Fi networks. It seems that you need a 1.30 ROM installed or have received the HTC Update for the software to work.
The app can be found in the marketplace on the phone.
Cheers

Works a treat. Thanks for the post andrew.

Great. Thanks for the post.
Now my Wi-Fi is hidden again and I can access. perfect. ;-)

I cant find it on the htc hub or marketplace. Latest firmeware and unbranded.

It is not there in the HTC Hub. Just search for "hidden wifi" in the marketplace.

Hi, can any one describe a little more that what this application is for.
I installed it on my Orange branded (updated) Mozart and added my home wi-fi name in it. Now what to do ....
cheers....

It's for connecting to hidden Wi-Fi networks

Hi ZeeShh
Most Wi-Fi networks broadcast their "SSID" which is the name of the network. However, it is possible to set up a Wi-Fi network which does not broadcast its SSID. These networks won't show up on a computer or phone which is searching for Wi-Fi networks.
In Windows and most PC Wi-Fi proprietory software you can manually enter the details of a hidden network in order to connect to it. This feature was not included in Windows Phone 7 however, hence HTC producing their own App to add this functionality.
So, the app is only really useful if you want to connect to a hidden Wi-Fi network.
Cheers

Thanks Andrew for the details. cheers...

Hi andoridkiller
Which device do you have? You need a 1.30 version ROM on your device. They are available in the Mozart Windows Phone 7 Development forum. You will need to update to nodo again after the ROM flash.
Alternatively you can wait until your device gets an update from HTC.
Cheers
andrew-in-woking

Thanks mate, I used the de branding tutorial on here to de brand the phone so I think i did flash my phone with 1.30 ROM then it re updated using zune. Ill wait hopefully get it. Thanks

is it possible, that it's just available via the US marketplace ?
[edit]
for the germans of us "verst. wlan" is the search term you have to look for

Hiding the SSID has been proven to offer no really security benefit anyway - so although the APP may be useful...overall it is better not to hid the SSID broadcast in the first place

I'm trying to download the Hidden WIFI app but under HTC hub in the actual page for the app, no 'install' / download button appears? Is the app stll available?
Can anyone advise?

Got the App...

can i connect to ad-hock wireless network??

I wonder what that Internet Sharing app is all about?...I've had no problems with the wireless modem app...?
You haven't tethered until you've used internet sharing.
Over bluetooth it creates a PAN with its own DHCP server, NAT translation and everything. Very cool. You can choose USB and it does the same thing too...
Sounds like they made it easier to use the 8525's internet connection to tether while only paying for the mediamax 200 plan
exactly!

I am actually using my X01HT right now in Internet Sharing mode to post this using my laptop.
I did a speed test and I get a great 120k down and 60k upload off of the Softbank network which I pay for the Flat Rate Plane which as far as I can tell will let me surf the internet etc with no issues for no charge except the actual service.
Works like a charm.

Short for Internet connection sharing, a method for connecting multiple computers in a LAN to the Internet through a single connection and a single IP address. ICS typically uses NAT technologies to achieve this and works with most connection technologies, including DSL, cable, ISDN, dial-up and satellite. The device with the modem or broadband interface that establishes the connection to the Internet is called the ICS host, or gateway while the other devices that connect to the Internet via the network and the ICS host are called ICS clients. If the ICS host fails, then all of the ICS clients lose their Internet connection.
Sharing an Internet connection can be achieved through either software or hardware solutions. All versions of Windows from Windows 98 and on have ICS software included in the operating system. However, there are also products such as WinGate and WinProxy, which are third-party shareware alternatives that will turn a computer into a gateway or proxy server. Hardware solutions involve a NAT-based hardware router that is connected directly to the Internet connection adapter, and each ICS client is then connected to the router.
Also referred to as simply Internet sharing, on Linux systems, this is called IP masquerading.

[APP][3 May 2010]Windows Live from the Windows Marketplace

Here is the latest Windows Live CAB that I downloaded from the WM Marketplace today (May 3, 2010). I like it cuz it allows you to sync and push your Hotmail email even if you're already pushing Gmail with ActiveSync. In essence, it's like having 2 Exchange accounts. It also gives you the "conversation" style emails in Outlook.
Windows Live never used exchange to sync email, what you say doesnt make sense as you have always been able to use an exchange account with a windows live account. Plus the version on the MP is currently 11.1, this would be a downgrade.
Any changelog?
Even if it doesn't use Exchange to push the Hotmail, it's basically the same thing, so who cares about semantics.
Please kindly state what the full version number of this *.cab file is... I know that the latest one provided in http://wl.windowsmobile.com/ is version 10.7.0061.0500.2000.

There has been some confusion about which version this is. I'm just going to leave it with the date that i downloaded it from the actual Windows Phone Marketplace. If you find a CAB that was downloaded after that date, then it's probably a later version.
Hmm...
Actually, I also have always been able to use Exchange + Hotmail.
Since I got my Windows Phone back in October 2009, I've always had Gmail on Activesync PLUS Hotmail on Windows Live and both were set to Push-mode (As item arrives). Maybe there's another feature they introduced that we haven't discovered?
Have a version for Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard (Motorola Q11)? Hugs from Brazil!
Some ROMs don't come with Windows Live or possibly with an older version.
This CAB will allow you to push both Gmail and Hotmail at the same time.
I recently got a windows live/messenger account and now I'd like to use it on my i780 via Wifi (not via Gprs, as that is quite expensive). Could you please tell me if this version can do so? The older ones all seem to be unable to do it. (exept if there was a way to use wifi as a modem)
thanks in advance

Are you asking can you use Windows Live over a Wifi connection? The answer to that is yes.
A cool little feature I noticed is that if you are using a ROM that does not have threaded email conversations, installing this CAB will enable that in Outlook. A nice little addition.

Thanks for your reply, but in my case, it doesn't work. Opera mobile, Outlook mobile and any other program that needs an internet connection are able to use wifi, but windows live insists on using gprs. When I try to log in(with wifi enabled and connected of course), it opens the connection bubble saying that a gprs connection is being started. If I click it away a couple of times, a notice appears that gprs doesn't work...
I already made an empty isp in the connection settings to prevent it from using gprs, but it somehow seems to start ActiveSync on the mobile. There I have no option to change the connection type to use wifi, but only wap gprs or mms etc.
Btw. my mobile is running its original windows mobile 6.0 Pro. Could that have something to do with this?
sorry for writing so much, but I want to make it as easy as possible for you to help me.
Thanks again
Using Wifi to get hotmail seems to be a problem. It always wants to use the cell data connection over wifi if both are available. I know that you can get windows live email through wifi if you turn on wifi and completely turn off the phone radio as if you have no service. But if both are on, I don't know how to make wifi take priority.

you could try DataController or Modaco NoData to (temporarily) disable your data connections. That way Windows Live is forced to use wifi
One thread with all official MS apps is not a bad thing, but someone looking specifically for Windows Live will have an easier time finding a thread dedicated to just that.

hmm I maybe wrong to intervene and say try using Palringo which has all MSN, Yahoo, Gmail etc (perhaps you are using Live messenger for a reason there) -

Thanks for your tip, you're quite right. I'm going to give it a try tomorrow in the morning.
With windows live etc. I haven't been able to even only take one step further. It still always uses the connection that is chosen at "programs - internet access - network connection". If I deactivate this connection(i.e.with NoData), it simply tries another one and if I stop all connections (or simply turn off the phone part of my mobile), it immediately says that there is no connection available. But it does still not use wifi, although it's turned on all the time. It works via GPRS, by the way, but it's much too expensive.
Expect to hear from me soon
EDIT: I have now tested palingo and I have to admit that it works really good! Also, there were no problems with wifi (of course)

Cellular Network x Wifi Problem

Hi guys.
I own a HTC Ultimate (HTC Titan here in Brazil) and I'm suffering for something that bothered me before in the Windows Mobile 'age'.
As the major users of smartphones, I keep my cellular connection always on and at home, or other places, I turn on my WIFI.
What happened is that, for some reason, the applications after a while stop using the WIFI connection. I know that because I often use EDGE instead 3D.
If I turn off the Cellular network, everything keeps running smooth.
Is anyone having the same behavior? I didn't see this in my HD7, as far as I remember.
Regards,
Cris

The Facebook is the champion. If I turn on Wifi and then open it, it will use the Wifi. If I got back and return to the App.. no more Wifi, only Cellular network.
This is the same thing on Windows Mobile. Microsoft should learn something from the competitor where they just keep one network running at a time!
What bothers me is that I don't remember this occuring in my HD7. Will put my SIM on it and try to see what happens.

Keep us updated please on HTC's reply. My 3G consumption is soaring every day
Evidence
I got an evidence yesterday that the OS is using Cellular Data while WiFi is on.
I used all my bandwidth on my plan, so Vivo as it's customers to keep a low speed or pay by MB used. This is done through the browser.
So I found that I was using the Cellular data while wifi is on when I opened the browser and receive the page from vivo asking me to choose wherever I wanna do use.
I don't know why MS still thinking that we wanna to shutdown thinks on phone to be able to use it properly. Why not implement like the others platforms where the OS just keep 1 way to connect to internet?
Amazing how they don't know how to advertise the product but know how to take away some pleasure to use the platform.
Hope they fix this in Apollo or a new OTA update. It's about time to show the users that indeed the phone can be updated OTA.

I do remember having this problem on my Windows Mobile but i have NEVER faced it with Windows Phone 7 on my Omnia 7! This is something related to HTC not Microsoft.
Quick Heads up, this is my message to HTC.
NOTE: HTC TITAN is not available on the device list, i chose the RADAR as it the one that is close to it. THIS PROBLEM IS RELATED TO HTC TITAN WINDOWS PHONE 7.5.
Dear Support,
Me and a lot of others who bought the HTC Titan Windows Phone 7.5 are facing a strange problem with 3G and WiFi.
For some reason, even when im connected to WiFi with internet connectivity the phone uses the Data Services from the Mobile Operator!
The fix is simple, go to settings > Mobile Network > Disable Data.
but it is actually not a solution.
This bug doesnt happen all the time, sometime traffic goes into WiFi as it should and suddenly it stopps and starts going thorugh the Cellular network!
I would love to know the reasons behind this issue (Not only me who is having it) and how to fix it (if we can do our selves).
If it is not possible to fix by my self, when HTC is going to release a fix?
Kindly note that this is NOT a Windows Phone 7.5 problem as i DO own a Samsung Omnia 7 with OS 7.5 and i dont face this problem.
Your quick reply is highly appreceated

Take a look at this: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/howto/wp7/start/connecting-how-and-when.aspx
"Your phone will typically choose a Wi-Fi connection over a cellular data connection when they're both available."
I'm afraid of this "typically". In my opinion, the correct way is to choose Wifi OR Cellular Data. One network at a time.
This week I will try to run some 'tests' on my HD7. I really don't remember having to switch of the celullar data to use correctly the wifi.
Keep us updated.

It looks like HTC has found the problem and is delivering an update for Titan. Can anyone confirm this?
Unfortunatly I own a Ultimate (Titan here in Brazil) and probably will take longer to Vivo test and delivery things =(
There is an update for the Titan, but I don't know if this includes the fix you are talking about, or if there will be another update?

[Q] HD2 6.5 Wi-Fi tethering with android tablet

Hi All,
I running the stock wm6.5 HD2 rom from t-mobile.
I have just bought a Arnova 10 G2 (cheap from hmv) and would like to use my phone wi-fi hotspot to get online. The problem I have is, the tablet does not recognise WEP encryption.
Can someone tell me the easiest way I can get online using my phone?
I have done several searches and a few people discuss similar issues and talk about writing and adding code. I do not know how to do this as I'm a middle aged fat bloke with no understanding of such things.
I have read a lot about flashing the phone to make it android, would this help or is there a simpler way?
Thanks in advance
CJ
Problem is not your WM6.5 HD2.
Problem is Android has ****e standard connectivity & does not have ad-hoc support as standard.
You will have to find an ad-hoc fix for the Tablet.
WM6.5 conectivity for tethering in both directions is faultless & can be achieved via wifi/BT/USB

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I'm not sure how to find a ad-hoc fix for the tablet. I've looked for wi-fi apps to find one that will recognise WEP w-fi.
there are a few out there but they find the phone but do not allow connection. as when you try to connect it takes you back to the tablet software.

Hello, I've got the same tablet and tethering works with my htchd2. Wifi routing does not work, I was not able to create a PAN network with my HTC HD2, and was not able to see a DUN network on my tablet. (or is it the other way round ?)
But tethering, using my 3G connection works. I sometimes need to reboot the tablet.

pdanet wifi + htc

I was excited to see that the update brought WiFi but then the message was "not for HTC"
Reasons?
Work around?
Have you tried Wifi Tether? It lets you use 4g when tethering, I haven't used pdanet for a while, but this should work and it is free.... http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
my evo 3d isn't rooted.

ok, solved that. Now can we get back to my original question. how did Htc lock their wifi?
HTC can't lock any WiFi because HTC is the phone manufacturer. The software is android os with HTC sense on top. HTC sense however is from HTC but sprint modifies it to fit there needs. However I'm really puzzled at your ???? Can you please explain a little more as to what your asking??? Thanks

I responded before and pda net pro does work with the HTCevo3d. If your having issues its probably your setup. The free ver of pda net will only allow you to visit certain websites but you can't log into any paid sites or ceck email, etc. It basically just let's you browse the web for reading. You have to install the pro ver for full web access and install the pro version drivers as well. Then you have to correctly setup the app on the phone and on the pc.

I also have pro and when using the new version 3.5, trying the wifi hotspot will not work. I have sprints hotspot, and can use bluetooth and usb, but not the wifi hotspot on pdanet. It gives me a message saying wifi hotspot is not supported on HTC devices, please use USB or bluetooth mode instead

Pretty sure it might be a legal issue or something, but I don't know.
When installing PDAnet on the computer it asks which device you use so it can install the custom drivers, I wonder if you choose the "Im not sure option" if that would change the way the program is installed. Gonna try that here soon.... didn't work :/
I also wonder if you can change the device name or something that way the app could think it was running on a moto device instead of good ole htc, making the wifi hotspot work.
But you will probably need root to do this, making other options like flashing a rom with built in support the way to go.

well I always assumed that drivers are related to hardware so I didn't think that you could use other drivers. I was wondering what people knew about the block, so I could hold out some hope that later versions would get there

Well, rooting isn't that hard. You don't have to switch roms when you root. You can back up everything just in case. Just root and go with the app Wifi Tether.
Also, there is an easier temp root out for the Evo 3d here --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1152101.
After completing the process, your phone will be rooted until you turn it off. You could do that, and then the Wifi Tether app should work until your device is shut off. I haven't personally used this method though, so I'm not 100% sure it will work.
Yes wifi tether is awesome, im use that everday at home and turned off my house internet, they have a 3.1 beta13 out and it works perfect!!!! BTW you have to go in the settings and than check the routing fix, make sure you do that or it wont work right, I have good reception for 4g, but it the best!!!
