pdanet wifi + htc - HTC EVO 3D

I was excited to see that the update brought WiFi but then the message was "not for HTC"
Reasons?
Work around?

Have you tried Wifi Tether? It lets you use 4g when tethering, I haven't used pdanet for a while, but this should work and it is free.... http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

my evo 3d isn't rooted.

Are you using the pro version or the free ???

I paid for the pro version. But it works so infrequently I can't tell which version I am using.

What os are you running ?? And you should definitely imo be running the pro version of pda-net because the free ver will only give you limited access to surf the web. Also what's the ver number of your pda app ???

ok, solved that. Now can we get back to my original question. how did Htc lock their wifi?

HTC can't lock any WiFi because HTC is the phone manufacturer. The software is android os with HTC sense on top. HTC sense however is from HTC but sprint modifies it to fit there needs. However I'm really puzzled at your ???? Can you please explain a little more as to what your asking??? Thanks

the new pdanet 3.5 has wifi but it doesn't work on htc

So does anyone know why Pdanet wifi doesn't work on HTC?

I responded before and pda net pro does work with the HTCevo3d. If your having issues its probably your setup. The free ver of pda net will only allow you to visit certain websites but you can't log into any paid sites or ceck email, etc. It basically just let's you browse the web for reading. You have to install the pro ver for full web access and install the pro version drivers as well. Then you have to correctly setup the app on the phone and on the pc.

I also have pro and when using the new version 3.5, trying the wifi hotspot will not work. I have sprints hotspot, and can use bluetooth and usb, but not the wifi hotspot on pdanet. It gives me a message saying wifi hotspot is not supported on HTC devices, please use USB or bluetooth mode instead

Pretty sure it might be a legal issue or something, but I don't know.
When installing PDAnet on the computer it asks which device you use so it can install the custom drivers, I wonder if you choose the "Im not sure option" if that would change the way the program is installed. Gonna try that here soon.... didn't work :/
I also wonder if you can change the device name or something that way the app could think it was running on a moto device instead of good ole htc, making the wifi hotspot work.
But you will probably need root to do this, making other options like flashing a rom with built in support the way to go.

well I always assumed that drivers are related to hardware so I didn't think that you could use other drivers. I was wondering what people knew about the block, so I could hold out some hope that later versions would get there

Well, rooting isn't that hard. You don't have to switch roms when you root. You can back up everything just in case. Just root and go with the app Wifi Tether.
Also, there is an easier temp root out for the Evo 3d here --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1152101.
After completing the process, your phone will be rooted until you turn it off. You could do that, and then the Wifi Tether app should work until your device is shut off. I haven't personally used this method though, so I'm not 100% sure it will work.

Yes wifi tether is awesome, im use that everday at home and turned off my house internet, they have a 3.1 beta13 out and it works perfect!!!! BTW you have to go in the settings and than check the routing fix, make sure you do that or it wont work right, I have good reception for 4g, but it the best!!!

This has worked consistently for me since install.
It also seems to not need any sort of special install procedure, you can just drop the apk and install from astro or whatever file manager you use.

You actually don't need a file manager to install just download it from your slide and it will ask if you want to install after it is done loading to your memory card.(Of course you need ROOT and su permission) Thanks!
her does anyone know if wifi tether can tether to android phones? I heard that the EVO can do it I really need this on my slide.

Huh? The wifi tether app creates an access point that any wifi-capable device can connect to. And as [most, if not all] Android handsets have wifi capabilities they should be able to join that access point to snag the wireless connection.

Yeah I've tried tethering on my own MT3GS and connecting to it via my sister's MT3GS and the network doesn't show up.
thanks for checking. I hope they find away to do it on ours soon.
Ok, when I try to install while on my phone it says there is a problem parsing the package... ?
NM, it was the wrong APK that had the same name, just ._ at the beginning that I was trying.
By the way, thanks for the app (OP and peeps who made it).
On my MT3GS it is working great! Also running the Teamslide Nonsense ROM, just put the apk on the sdcard and installed.
I'm on OSX and it doesn't actually show up as a network, it shows up as a p2p connection. Not sure if that would make a difference for people that might be having trouble, but basically if you get the app installed and the tether started, it might just be computer settings.

Has anyone else noticed the wifi tether breaking on eugenes rc6 and teamslide1.71 after flashing the dopio kernel? Cyanogen rc1 seems to reboot on all. It seems like all ROMs that have modified kernel's have caused wifi tether to not work. I am running CR's Full OTA with wifi tether working. After flashing any dopio kernel the thether no longer works (I have tried 2_0_5 pre3, 7 and 8).
I just updated my girlfriend's 3G Slide to the latest CM build (6.0.0) and Wifi Tether is causing reboots for her as well. My Google-fu is wearing thin.
I tried the built in USB tethering as well and regardless of the driver I use once USB tethering is turned on it can't find the driver.
Not sure if it's connected.
Same driver issue is happening with PDANet, on 2 laptops. One running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, the other running Vista Home Premium 32 bit.
This big issue is with WifiTether rebooting the phone. Hopefully someone can come up with a fix for it.
(I've also tried every version of WifiTether as well, happens with each version no matter what.)

[Q]wifi direct on p500.

Is it possible to have wifi direct on our phone?
Your question not clear.
anyway there is software connectify http://connectify.me/
It has has the feature of wifi hotspot that can be enabled on any pc or laptop having wifi and win 7 OS, so that you can connect any wifi enabled phone to wifi network you created.

hmm.....no idea if it will work on p500 as it requires adhoc network but it is supported on ICS so i guess we will have to wait for our awesome developers to port ICS to our phone and then only we can use it...
optimus black has wifi direct tho... http://www.viddler.com/explore/engadget/videos/2313/
You can make a WiFi hotspot either on your computer or your Optimus, connect them and then configure a FTP Server. I think SwiFTP should work fine (It works for me and it's free on the market). As for the computer - search DMOZ.com or see this.

Aha, I was reading the ICS features and about to poke around the ICS porting thread to see if anyone mentions this. It'd be nice to have something that functions like "Chrome2Phone" without going through 3rd party.
woudnt it b easier to port wifi-direct from the optimus black???
i know this is a very old post but since it was unanswered i thought id respond.
Wifi Direct(As far as i know) is a hardware feature and hence cannot be ported and since our phone does not have that hardware it is not possible to use this tech even with ics.
Its great to see this stuff rolling out finally.

To answer questions and dispel myths. This is not hardware based, but software based. Plus only one device in the pair needs to have the software.
Basically, Bluetooth will be a thing of the past very soon. This is a software implementation that anything with a wifi can do.

Actually,me and my friend transfer files over wifi by turning on tethering on one device(xperia x8,without enabling data) and i connect to the hotspot(O1).Then we use a software called ip messenger on market to transfer files over wifi and we get speeds over 8mbps.This isnt wifi direct but adhoc can do almost the same thing. And yes wifi direct is software based but afaik,it needs wifi n standard to work, which our phone doesnt have.Correct me if i'm wrong.

Now that we have permroot, wireless tether?

So now that we have permroot, is there a wireless tether app that works? I tried the one here:
http://www.jonamerica.com/technology/the-htc-rezound-root-guide/
But although it starts, I don't see the ssid on my laptop. I think perhaps infrastructure doesn't work with that. I'd prefer to avoid ad-hoc.
So has anyone had success with a particular market or apk for wireless tether?
Thanks in advance!

Ive tried a couple versions of the usual Wireless Tether.apk, but I still only get wep as an option. Trying to find a way to get WPA2 to work.
I am using "Wireless Tether for Root Users" V2.0-7 and its working perfectly. None of the newer beta versions have worked correctly for me so far..
It seems to work in ad-hoc mode only though... but it works fine for me. I'm not using WPA either, I just leave it open with access control turned on.
Barnacle
I'm using Barnacle Wireless Tether from the app store and it's working EXCELLENT. Even brings over the 4G speed but is also working in Ad-hoc mode.

Some devices do and some dont detect ad-hoc networks. Until we get a custom kernel capable, and software to manipulate it, we're stuck with ad-hoc only, which works for like, 95% of devices that would need to connect to it.

WI-FI hotspot tethering not working

Hi, I'm using an unlocked Samsung i777 outside the US. But the fact that wifi tethering is not working. Every time when I try to enable it, it says "mobile data not available or invalid sim".
3G/HSDPA connecton fine and SIMcard has a data plan and I can even use usb tethering.
How can I make it work? Phone is rooted.
I am using hellraised stock Rom XWLA4. When was UCKH7 also not working.
In system/app have 3 app wifi 1.0, wifi sharing 1.0, wifi sharing manager 1.0. I tried to freeze them, no luck.
Thanks.
Either wifi tethering is broken on XWLA4 (I haven't played with it myself yet), or something about the CSC or apns-conf.xml doesn't work with your carrier.
Hellraiser is designed under the assumption that only AT&T customers would subject themselves to the carrier-mangling of the I777 and as such, includes an AT&T-tuned CSC. There's a possibility that you need to remove all of the CSC files from the Hellraiser zip and wipe/reflash. It's either that or XWLA4 is busted.
Hahah lol...dud even I had exactly the same concern. Its not a big problem Jus download FoxFi from Android Market and voila! It will take away ur pain It enables the WiFi hotspot tethering like a charm without any problem. Its free..Jus type the above name in Android market and install. Then open the app and touch on Activate WiFi hotspot. Its done. Let me know bout it. TC.

Third-party tethering apps are not a solution unless there is no way to fix native tethering. Most of not all of them put the device into adhoc mode, which is incompatible with many devices.

I do agree, I have tried foxfi before but it will hang and force close uninstalled and reinstalled the app with same results. I have uninstalled tethering provision app on rooted stock ics but then again when I start the native wifi hotspot it just hang for several seconds the force close saying the application setting has stopped. Now I just remember installing this foxfi app again upon reading this thread and am now happy it works and I can now tether thru wifi hotspot with my phone. Having a solution to the native phone wifi hotspot though is pretty sweet. I don't know if the uninstalling of the tethering provision app has help but at least I have a functional wifi hotspot now.

I couldn't seem to get my Hotspot to work and so I downloaded FoxFi. It seems to send a signal fine, and my iPad sees the SSID fine. My phone shows Connected: my mac address- duration - ipad's ip address but when I try to go to a web site my ipad show the following error dialog:

Safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet
Thoughts anyone?
Yer not asking us to help you trouble shoot something that isn't even running the Android operating system are you? Cause obviously that'd be silly to do in a forum like this. Does the tethering work with your computer? If so its a problem with the Apple product you're talking about and should be addressed in their forums.

Well, when i use my native Android Wi-Fi Hotspot the phone says it is an active hotspot and my iPad does connect, but I get the same error message when I try and browse the net:
Cannot Open Page
Safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet
I would naturally prefer to use the native mode.....any help with that?
Thanks in advance

It will take away ur pain It enables the WiFi hotspot tethering like a charm without any problem. Its free..Jus type the above name in Android market and install. Then open the app and touch on Activate WiFi hotspot. Its done. Let me know bout it. TC.

How did you do it ? I have the same problem . Is it possible you could instruct me in plain English to what these codes mean ?

Wifi tether working (no root)

Well, I got this working with the LTE and Transformer Prime tablet.
Download FoxFi app from here to your phone. It is not available in the Sprint Play Store (Sprint blocks it).
http://foxfi.com/bin/
Bluetooth tethering does not work, at least I couldn't get it working. However, wifi tethering to this HTC phone DOES work, even though the Play Store description indicates it doesn't,,
"Turns your Android phone into free WiFi Hotspot - no rooting or tether plan required. Just install and turn it on. Bluetooth mode works for all phones. WiFi mode currently works on most Samsung/Motorola/LG phones. WiFi mode does NOT work on Motorola Droid 1, Motorola Triumph, Samsung Admire, LG Revolution or any HTC phones, use Bluetooth mode instead."
After install, just launch the app, click "Activate Wifi Hotspot". Then, I connect from tablet to "AndroidAP", and I'm done.
A couple things. The FoxFi "Network Name" does not seem to matter. Mine defaulted to Android92 but the Transformer Prime still sees it as AndroidAP (no matter what I change it to on the phone). Also, the WPA2 security does not seem to work. If I enable it, the Transformer Prime never prompts for password entry, it just connects.
Try it out on your tablets, or laptops and let me know your results. Nothing is required to be installed on my tablet.
It works for me as well, however like you it doesn't matter what I rename the network, it still shows as AndroidAP on my WiFi device.
Also, even though I put in a WPA2 password, it still shows up as an open network with no password required to connect. So, this may not be great for airport use (which is mostly what I use it for) because everyone can just connect to your network with no password required.
I'm on my 3D waiting for my LTE and its the complete opposite. Bluetooth does and WiFi doesn't.

I'd actually prefer the Bluetooth tethering to work. I'll play around with that some more tonight. I seem to get this Error Code 67 issue, which a Google Search indicates might be show stopper.
Also, I emailed the developer about this issues. See if that yields any response.
I agree about the open network issue. However, it would be fine for use in a car while driving and wanting to use a tablet instead of the phone.
Wifi Tether that worked on the OG Evo with Sense works fine on the Evo LTE. I downloaded it from the Play Store and chose Generic ICS as the setup. WPA/WPA2 encryption works and had no issues connecting to it and using it via wifi. I have not tested the BT connection.

Pardon my ignorance on this...do you guys have LTE out in Orlando?
Nevermind...I see you meant your EVO LTE.
I just took the Wifi Tether for Rooted users app from my EVO 3D and it worked fine.
What is in Play Store is NOT the same. You have to go to his web site to get the latest (which I think is still beta).
I knew the one on my EVO 3D worked on ICS.
I was running MeanROM ICS 1.4 and just grabbed it out of system/app or data/app from the .ZIP file for the ROM.
Set Profile to Generic ICS, Router Fix on, Clamping Fix on.
Oh what the heck, I uploaded it. This wifi tether app works on EVO LTE.
Just install it like a normal app by double clicking on it from a file browser on the phone.
If IE9 rename it to .ZIP rename it back to .apk.

You got this working without rooting EVO LTE? I tried it with your download and my laptop didn't "see" my phone.

Okay.. I did get wifi tether to work when I had my EVO3D rooted.
I tried BT tether with FoxFi on new LTE without root and it gives me an error. Any suggestions anyone?
Thanks...
Foxfi works for me as well though I have the same security issues. So does this mean that htc has removed the "hotspot lock" from the lte? I tried the same foxfi app on a htc evo 4g and it gives the hotspot lock error.
wifi works for me now.. don't know why.. but I'm just happy it works
Sorry I didn't notice no root.
Also I can't understand why you wouldn't root.
It is the most simplest process and completely reversible.
I might even keep this root even if s-off is achieved.

I've been so tempted to root. Just don't want to void warranty. Can they tell if you rooted if you unroot?

If you run the RUU, it's exactly like it was shipped.
If you don't run ruu, yes they can tell. If you do run ruu, they cannot tell.
It's pretty safe as far as warranty goes, unless you do something dumb, like bring it in rooted.
By the way sprint replaced my 3d under warranty with it s-off and saying virgin mobil. But I admit I was lucky.

You can use Wireless tether if you download FoxFi directly from their website: foxfi.com/bin ... you can't use the one from Google Play. The one on Google Play won't work on HTC phones. I haven't tried BT tether, but WiFi tether works well on an unrooted phone -- except you can't seem to secure the connection. You can input an SSID Network name and a password into the app, but it shows up as unsecured and with the default name of AndroidAP. Must be something to do with the workaround they had to do to get past the lock HTC put on the phones.

I have tried this (with root) but it doesn't seem to broadcast the network or show any data usage.
I also tried FoxFi in the OP but no luck either. Windows (7) see the network but it would show No Internet Connection, or at other times it would say Windows cannot connect to AndroidAP.

I had the same problem. I tried BT tether but didn't work either. I installed wifi tether (needs root) but I don't have root YET. Then installed PDA apps from market. Reboot phone, reboot computer because nothing seems to work. I'm not sure what helped but FoxFi works now for me.
