Is it possible to have wifi direct on our phone?
Your question not clear.
anyway there is software connectify http://connectify.me/
It has has the feature of wifi hotspot that can be enabled on any pc or laptop having wifi and win 7 OS, so that you can connect any wifi enabled phone to wifi network you created.

With wifi direct,we can transfer files between two devices without connecting to internet, just like bluetooth.Take a look at this video:

hmm.....no idea if it will work on p500 as it requires adhoc network but it is supported on ICS so i guess we will have to wait for our awesome developers to port ICS to our phone and then only we can use it...
optimus black has wifi direct tho... http://www.viddler.com/explore/engadget/videos/2313/
You can make a WiFi hotspot either on your computer or your Optimus, connect them and then configure a FTP Server. I think SwiFTP should work fine (It works for me and it's free on the market). As for the computer - search DMOZ.com or see this.

for phone to comp file transfer there are tons of solutions to try out
Aha, I was reading the ICS features and about to poke around the ICS porting thread to see if anyone mentions this. It'd be nice to have something that functions like "Chrome2Phone" without going through 3rd party.
woudnt it b easier to port wifi-direct from the optimus black???
i know this is a very old post but since it was unanswered i thought id respond.
Wifi Direct(As far as i know) is a hardware feature and hence cannot be ported and since our phone does not have that hardware it is not possible to use this tech even with ics.
Its great to see this stuff rolling out finally.

To answer questions and dispel myths. This is not hardware based, but software based. Plus only one device in the pair needs to have the software.
Basically, Bluetooth will be a thing of the past very soon. This is a software implementation that anything with a wifi can do.

Actually,me and my friend transfer files over wifi by turning on tethering on one device(xperia x8,without enabling data) and i connect to the hotspot(O1).Then we use a software called ip messenger on market to transfer files over wifi and we get speeds over 8mbps.This isnt wifi direct but adhoc can do almost the same thing. And yes wifi direct is software based but afaik,it needs wifi n standard to work, which our phone doesnt have.Correct me if i'm wrong.

Anyone successfully tethered an Archos 5 Internet Tablet with Android to Verizon Touch Pro, so as to get that lovely EVDO Rev A displayed on that nice 4.8 inch screen?
I have an old SSK ROM (probably a good year old). I've tried WMWiFiRouter (Bluetooth and WiFi) and ICS (BT) to no avail. All of these work from my Win7 laptop. Bluetooth option requires just pairing; no config at all.
Apparently one issue is that Android (at least the 1.6 Donut on the Archos) can't connect to WiFi in Ad Hoc mode.
Don't know for sure what the BT issue is. Two things do jump out:
1. phone doesn't show NAP or PAN in the supported profiles in BT settings
2. laptop sees DUN as a profile. Archos doesn't show any listed after pairing
Any idea if one of the nice ROMs out there will help?
Thanks!
Kevin
This would make my year if I can get this working..
Archos 5 (fw:1.7.33)
Verizon Touch Pro 2(wm6.5)
When I try to turn the tether on (on the archos), "Dial-up Networking" in the bluetooth settings of the TP2 appears for the duration of it trying to connect. If the DATA Connection is connected, it will disconnect when you attempt to tether and not even try to reconnect.
So.. The phone sees a dial up connection from the bluetooth but theres a missing link between there and it actually dialing out. I tried wmwifirouter.exe but I cant get the bluetooth to work in that.
Weird thing: While tethering was tring to astablish a connection, I opened IE on the TP2 (to manually connect data) and got the Verizon tethering page (yes, on my phone) asking me sign up.. huh?
I heard from my coworkers that it is possible enable Ad-hoc in Android.. anyone try it with the archos?

Actually, with the latest Archos firmware (1.7.71? last week), it works great for me. After updating, I unpaired and repaired the devices. I use Internet Connection Sharing with BT, and use Archos Tether, and it works quite nicely. The power control widget is helpful here too; sometimes I need to power-cycle the Archos BT, then turn on tether, to get it to work.

Internet Connection Sharing is a program/setting? Or are you just saying you share internet through bluetooth.. Sorry just being thorough.
haha I'm not surprised there has been an update since 1.7.33. Hopefully that will fix my random reboots.. Ill report later tonight if the update to 1.7.71 helps. Thanks!

Internet Connection Sharing is a standard Microsoft WinMo program, but it is often dropped from carrier phones. It's pretty easy to find online.
WMWiFiRouter likely also should work in BT mode with 1.7.71, but I haven't tried it.
Kevin.. I'm being an idiot. You have the touch pro and I have the touch pro 2.
Bluetooth on wmwifirouter and on ICS (maybe i have the wrong ICS) seem to be not supported on the TP2. The only options is wifi/usb with wifirouter and usb with ICS
I'm assuming I need a program like those two that will work with bluetooth? I get the message on the TP2 "this device is attempting to connect to the internet" and I accept but still nothing... is this where wifirouter and ics come into play?
BT for ICS and WMWiFiRouter on TP2 vs TP
Odd that ICS and WMWiFiRouter should have less functionality on TP2 WinMo 6.5 than on TP WinMo 6.1...
Maybe you'll want to ping Morose Media (WMWiFiRouter folks) to see if they have any thoughts, as well as ask general ICS question on this site.
What version of WMWiFiRouter (I have 1.25, build 600) do you have?
And where di you get your ICS?

You may want to check out the following thread. I think some of the Android users (e.g. G1) folks may have made some progress, but I don't know if that was on client or server side.
I wrote to morose about the TP2.. heres what they said:
We are looking into supporting the new non-Microsoft Bluetooth stack that comes with the new HTC devices, however unfortunately I cannot give you a date when we might have a beta of this available. All I can say is that the development team is working on it.

My pleasure... Good luck!
By the way, I asked them about supporting multiple devices over bluetooth, and the next day they gave me a prototype that does it, and they say they will put that into the main product. Now that's service! I love it -- much lower power usage and heat than WiFi, and plenty fast enough for my uses. Should run much longer that way. I'm psyched!
I am in the same boat with an archos 5 android tablet, the HTC touch PRO and sprint as a carrier. let me know if you come up with a work around. I'll do the same.
OKay . maybe i miss read all the posts. Its the HD PRO 2 thats having trouble connecting. I just updated to the 1.7.77 which allowed me to change to PAN and i made sure that PAN was selected in WMWIFIROUTER. All of the other things i left blank, and it connected right up showing a tiny cell phone icon next to my bluetooth icon. It was a very happy moment. I love finding those hidden icons.
Archos 5 Programming problem with PAN/DUN
The problem, and no one take this wrong, is that the technicians at Archos are a bunch of backwards idiots. I emailed them, explained to them that, if they would just rewrite the PAN/DUN menu to be selected previous to pairing, the problem would be solved.
My Sprint Touch Pro will do PAN bluetooth (all day long) even upside down but the idiotic software on the Archos 5 isn't smart enough to detect it so you don't get to use the PAN (which they claim is there), all you see is DUN.
I've used PDANet and gotten results but the connection is SO unstable it's just too irritating to bother.
If more people would write Archos, tell them to change the architecture of the tethering, this tablet would be more along the awesome line.
HOWEVER, because of this little quirk, some electronics magazines wrote the Archos 5 as "One of the tablets that should have NEVER been created" and it's gotten a bad rap because of the engineers.
Heck, even the whole GPS issue, they used an independent software from another company to make it work and while it DOES work, it's often slow to lock-in while standing still sometimes.
Basically i saw write in and tell them to change it. PAN is so much easier to deal with. I've had better luck with the G1 and the HERO but the problem is my current phone is using Windows Mobile 6 and they actually removed the DUN some versions ago for some reason i can't explain and the Microsoft tech couldn't tell me either.
You can hack the DUN in with registry tweaks and support software but there's no guarantee it will work.
#777 to start DUN connection?
I know I am late to this party, but on my 3rd AIT 5 (clearance at Best Buy for 150, but I got open box unit for 125) attempting this with XV6800, and now a new Imagio that tethers (Verizon) just fine with Linux/WinXP/Nokia N810.
The thing I have found with DUN is that it requires the tethered device (PC/AIT/etc) to send the #777 to connect, then authenticate with <phone number>@vzw3g.com for Id, and password of vzw. The tethering setup on the AIT appears to let you do the Id/Password part, but I see no way to get the #777 sent in the first place. Has anyone figured out that part?
TIA

Does anyone manage to get USB tether working using any one of the ROM?
This was touched on briefly in another thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842842), but mostly on wifi tether, and I have not seen any recent posts on this topic. I want to use the gtablet for school and work and USB tethering would be an absolute necessity; any help and assistance on this would be most apprecative.
There are only drivers for Windows, Mac and Linux for USB tether, so doubtful it would work. I tried it anyway, even though I knew the result. Still can not get wifi tether to work.

Sorry, I've been swamped last few days... well the last month actually... but Send me your current /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf file as I can use your current saved networks to build you a working set of files for wifi tether... I'll PM you my email in case I didn't already...
I'm not sure what usb host support has been built so far. My understanding is that in theory the linux network driver should be able to be used in android with some work ofcourse.
I'm not going to root my Gtablet right away so I'll have to wait to see if someone figures out how to wire/wireless tether while it's stock. My rooted Droid 1 is getting bored. LOL

I know this is an old thread, I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with USB tethering at all.
+1 interest in this, or bluetooth tethering. My company is PCI compliant and has wifi blockers all over the building
does ad-hoc run over the same frequencies as wifi?
Client devices that use ad-hoc wifi are licensed for the same FCC spectrum as devices that only use infrastructure wifi, so that makes me assume they use the same frequencies.
I'm only aware of two tethering solutions on android yet, but i'm a noob so there may be more:
1) the wpa supplicant patch. This allows the Android device to tether as a client to another adhoc wifi sharing device.
2) pdanet. This allows the Android device to tether as a server to another non-android client, via bluetooth or USB.
So far, nothing I've seen supports USB tethering client on Android. For now, with your use case I'd recommend a more mature OS like WinXP. With the right software, WinXP can serve as a USB tether client to most modern phones.
Bump...
Would like to be able to USB tether when honeycomb comes out. But would be awesome if it happened earlier.
second that request. USB tethering is so much easier than WiFi hotspotting, not to mention it's free with my current T-mobile plan
Same here. I use ICS via USB tethering from my HTC Touch Diamond to my PC and will get a gTablet when I can use it similarly as a client.
i second this
All of us married folk who are pushed for both time and money (but are still tech adventurous) would love some clear directions (or a script or app) for tethering to their DUN capable regular phones by either BT or USB.
Many thanks in advance to whoever takes up the challenge...

I concur on this. I use PDAnet with my original droid to tether to laptop. Unfortunately, PDAnet can't be used on Vegan Ginger which I am running on my gTab. Any help would be much appreciated!

From my searching thru Google I found out that the original Droid can bluetooth tether to the Xoom. Not to sure what gives the ability for that to happen but it works. If it's code specific then maybe some tinkering with that might get it to work but if it's hardware specific..again I'm just throwing it out there.
BT tethering is very doable depending on your phone. I use PDANET on my Droid X.
For some deeper info (including a script to get it started on the G-Tab) Look here:

Hi, I'm using an unlocked Samsung i777 outside the US. But the fact that wifi tethering is not working. Every time when I try to enable it, it says "mobile data not available or invalid sim".
3G/HSDPA connecton fine and SIMcard has a data plan and I can even use usb tethering.
How can I make it work? Phone is rooted.
I am using hellraised stock Rom XWLA4. When was UCKH7 also not working.
In system/app have 3 app wifi 1.0, wifi sharing 1.0, wifi sharing manager 1.0. I tried to freeze them, no luck.
Thanks.
Either wifi tethering is broken on XWLA4 (I haven't played with it myself yet), or something about the CSC or apns-conf.xml doesn't work with your carrier.
Hellraiser is designed under the assumption that only AT&T customers would subject themselves to the carrier-mangling of the I777 and as such, includes an AT&T-tuned CSC. There's a possibility that you need to remove all of the CSC files from the Hellraiser zip and wipe/reflash. It's either that or XWLA4 is busted.
Hahah lol...dud even I had exactly the same concern. Its not a big problem Jus download FoxFi from Android Market and voila! It will take away ur pain It enables the WiFi hotspot tethering like a charm without any problem. Its free..Jus type the above name in Android market and install. Then open the app and touch on Activate WiFi hotspot. Its done. Let me know bout it. TC.

Third-party tethering apps are not a solution unless there is no way to fix native tethering. Most of not all of them put the device into adhoc mode, which is incompatible with many devices.

I do agree, I have tried foxfi before but it will hang and force close uninstalled and reinstalled the app with same results. I have uninstalled tethering provision app on rooted stock ics but then again when I start the native wifi hotspot it just hang for several seconds the force close saying the application setting has stopped. Now I just remember installing this foxfi app again upon reading this thread and am now happy it works and I can now tether thru wifi hotspot with my phone. Having a solution to the native phone wifi hotspot though is pretty sweet. I don't know if the uninstalling of the tethering provision app has help but at least I have a functional wifi hotspot now.

I couldn't seem to get my Hotspot to work and so I downloaded FoxFi. It seems to send a signal fine, and my iPad sees the SSID fine. My phone shows Connected: my mac address- duration - ipad's ip address but when I try to go to a web site my ipad show the following error dialog:
Cannot Open Page
Safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet
Thoughts anyone?

Same issue! Installed Remix, rooted it manually, everything seemed to be perfect until I discovered I had no way of connecting to the Internet. It's a no-go!
There's a related thread on reddit(r/RemixOS/comments/49ahbx/how_to_connect_my_4g_lte_modem_to_remix_pc_rooted) that I'm following, not much there though. Someone on there recommended to tether Wifi, but I can't imagine running a second machine to do as a hotspot. That's just stupid and a waste of energy and not how things should be.

Firstly ,i have 2 x mini wi fi dongles .
they have usb options ( Huawei E5520 and a Vodafone lte .
Both connect to my laptop ( buildt in wifi ) No issues overall .
Also i can use my phone Note5 modem 3G/4G as a wifi hotspot and connect to laptop (Remix os ) .No issues ,works fine .This i did before and after rooting .
Maybe an option ?
good luck

The modems mentioned do not provide a PPP port, so they don't work with PPP Widget 2."
If PPP won't work, then I don't know... If you find a way, please share. Until then, Remix is pretty much useless.
Please if anyone is having a. Solution please tell...
I am using tp link to connect to WiFi but wifi not working.. Please anyone help me.. I want it to verify Gameloft games.... I use Ethernet now.. Need WiFi connection to play Gameloft game on the first run.. Please help me.. At least tell me a workaround to fake WiFi connectivity over Ethernet...
Unplug your dongle and plug it back in, then reboot. Its worked for me a couple times.
I tried a different dongle and it worked fine.
I don't know about this feature of turning our android device into Wi-Fi repeater until I come across this app Fqrouter2 and the sad part is, it's not working currently I don't know the reason, it's even pulled down from the Play Store. Is there anyone in development interested in making such app or already trying? I searched the internet and couldn't find a similar app like this, it has other features as well but Wi-Fi repeater/extender caught my eye. If anyone can come up with only Wi-Fi repeater/extender feature app, that would be great. Thanks.

AFAIK most devices/wifi chips can use either AP mode (WiFi Hotspot) or connect to an existing WiFi. I guess it just works with some devices/WiFi chipsets.

Even I was under this impression for long time. I got to know with this App you can use Wi-Fi and Extender(Hotspot) simultaneously.
Edit: It works only on rooted devices, I can install the app but unable to execute it on both Marshmallow and Kitkat.
I wish there is one. Wifi extender/repeater is a catching feature

Try netshare-no-root-tethering on Google Play, tested and works on my Marshmallow device. You connect to a wi-fi, turn on the netshare app, and it creates another wifi network like mobile hotspot that other devices can connect to.
So does FQrouter2 still work on Android 4.2.2? Or did it require ancient versions of Android to work?

As far as I can tell, this is the only working app. Tested on AOSP Marshmallow Galaxy S4 - I took my sim card out to make sure it wasn't using mobile data, and it works! Shares your WiFi as another network. Unfortunately the app is ugly as all hell and doesn't let you change the name or password of the hotspot. Plus it requires you to use some dodgy proxy thing so it's not quite as good as fqrouter used to be. Anyone know of any other apps?
EDIT: also doesn't seem to play well with HTTPS

Hey mate! Do you have apk of the pro version of this app? Thanks.
Alternative
By the way, i found this similar app in Playstore which is completely free. ) See attached.
It still requires a proxy to be able to connect the devices.
Unfortunately, I need an app that will repeat wifi without the need for a proxy, as the device I want to use it on has no options to enter proxy.
