I have been reading through the threads and was wondering if the ROM's listed in the following thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842000&page=8# will not only take out Clockwork Mod but also allow for the new update to 4349? Does anyone know?
My understanding from all the threads, and mostly roebeet's comments is that you have to be on stock 3588 and with NO CWM, to safely upgrade to the new 4349 firmware (note I haven't taken the OTA yet, so take that with a grain of salt).
As far as the list of older stock versions, I think (not sure) that 3588 is the only one of those that overwrites CWM and replaces it with stock recovery.
There was another one, before 3588, that's not on that 1st post (see my signature - it was the one I had before 3588) that also replaced CWM with stock recovery.

At the moment I'm running a custom ROM on my rooted Hero and using apps2sd - which the ROM sorted out automatically.
When (if?) the official 2.1 update eventually arrives; I'm quite tempted to go official again. I have 2 questions about how that might work:
1) If I just flash an image, will it un-root my phone? Are the official ROMS available anywhere in update.zip form rather than .exe?
2) Does anyone know of a good guide to setting up apps2sd manually? I have the Amon RA recovery image installed - I assume there's more to setting up apps2sd than just using that to partition? Presumably mount points must be edited...?
As far as I now, flashing official ROM will replace your recovery with official one. It will un-root ur phone and it will unable to set up a custom ROM later.
This question was discussed at forum earlier.
It is bad decision to set up official ROM. After release it will take a couple of hours while dev's prepare full-functional root version that won't replace your recovery

As QuikerHero said the official update will most likely install a perfected SPL so that you can't flash custom ROMs and such anymore. However whenever the official 2.1 gets released we will most likely see a repackaged version a few hours later that won't update the SPL. A little more time after that we should get a rooted version with Apps2SD and whatever is included these days
Cool - so it should just be a case of waiting for a tweaked version of the official one for root with apps2sd?
or search google on how to extract rom.zip from ruu and do it yourself

Was discussed in thread Important: Do not update to 2.1 from htc!!! on page 2 and 3.
OK - I think I've got this now. Just a couple of (probably stupid) questions to clarify a few things for me.
1) If I've got a rooted phone and I install a stock ROM using update.zip presumably I'll still be rooted?
2) If I use the Ammon RA recovery to partition my SD cards - is that all that's required for Apps2SD? I'm assuming that the recovery also sets up the correct mounts points?
3) Presumably, if I have a rooted phone - even with a stock ROM - I won't get any OTA updates? If I did then I would presumably lose root?
Sorry for what probably seem really stupid questions but I think I've almost got my head around this...

1. No. The rooting part takes place in the rom. Yes, you will have the ability to install another rom, so from that point of view you are root. But the rom itself has to have support to perform root-tasks. (Su, etc.)
2. Apps2sd can be installed seperatly, but requires some knowledge..
3. Yes, you would lose the abilty to change rom's and perform actions on your phone what require root access.
Dont mention it There are no such things as stupid questions.
Hi Can anyone point me to the definitive instructions on how to return my GT10 to stock from the rooted pre-release Touchwiz? I would like to install the official OTA update.
I'm locked and rooted with CWM.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using XDA Premium App
Go to the sticky in the Development section of this forum and there you will find the instructions and files you need. It is as simple as flashing a zip via CWM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1171089
However you should note, people have been posting about not being able to pull the update. You can read those threads in the Q and A section.
I was one of those people so i just flashed the stock rooted deodexed version of the OTA here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198921
I'm very happy with it, now I have a theme too
I really appreciate your reply. Especially as you were the only one
My concern is that I am looking for a set of instructions. What I tend to see on the forums are not that. They are at best guidelines.
For example, you've directed me to a thread. I'm assuming you mean for me to read and follow that thread. It exceeds what I need to do. However, I did find a section on returning to stock. .... the thread has the guidelines about 3 (printed) pages away from the actual download. So again, I had to read through a bunch of extraneous notes to actually get to the download, or what I assume is the download; as it seemingly has no relationship to the guidelines, I'm not sure.
In any case, I clicked the download link and there are six different files.. with no explanation of what they are or how they are to be use. So while I appreciate your reply my original question is still left unanswered.
I'm looking for "the definitive instructions , not guidelines or a post of disjointed notes, on how to return my GT10 to stock from the rooted pre-release Touchwiz"
If this doesn't exist I'll be more than happy to help by writing it if someone can tell me what those instructions are.
Download any of these, save to internal memory, ENTER recovery, oh you need to be definitive! Switch off, press power key, as the screen lits press volume down(left) key, choose left icon with left key and press right volume key to confirm. Choose update.zip option, browse to the downloaded zip file and install.

These are stock, rooted, OTA updates flashing these is equivalent to receiving it directly from samsung. By the way, there's no guarantee that you will definitely receive an OTA update, flashing to any previous rom as most on shipped rom haven't yet.
Excellent! Thank you so much :-D. I got the KMB update installed. The Google Video App is now issuing an error on rooted devices ::sigh::
But then that's an issue for another post.
Thanks again! !

How can I flash ROM from samfirmware.com? All I have is *.tar (inside are some *.img files) file and absolutely no idea how to flash it using Odin...
Just quick reference for other n00bs like me -- just flash it as PDA
Hi, I just got a hand me down samsung fascinate to replace my barely functioning OG Droid. I rooted it and installed rom manager and it kept failing the custom rom installation or any installation of anything from recovery manager. It kept saying the signature verification failed if I remember the error code correctly. That was with the 3e recovery software. I read a few posts that said the older 2e version would work better with rom manager.
So I used odin and reverted to an older software revision, 2.1-update1. That successfully shows 2e as the recovery manager version. But now the market doesn't show rom manager(free) as an install option, premium shows up though. If I use the web browser to look at the market and look for it it shows up but it shows four devices, my old droid, a nook I rooted and converted for a friend, and then two devices that just show a question mark and doesn't allow them to be selected for installation. I thought thats ok I'll just download it from clockwork mods website and install it manually. I downloaded it but astro opens it and shows no info, details tab says it cannot open RomManager.apk as APK file. If I open it with file manager it says it cannot parse package. I tried downloading it on my computer and transferring it to my phone and it still says the same thing.
So I'm really confused as to what is going on. I do have install non market stuff checked.
I was hoping someone could give me some advice. I want to install miui as that was what I ran on my droid and liked it. Want to see how it runs on a faster phone.
Thanks in advance hopefully I provided enough information and didn't miss something simple.
When you were on Froyo, did you install the modified 3e Recovery needed for CWM to stick? I'm sure this is your problem if you didnt take this step.
Here is a link to the thread with everything you will need. If you have additional problems, dont hesitate to ask!
Hope this helps!
BTW: 1. Dont worry about this being for the infuse. It will work fine & 2. These types of threads should go in the Q&A section, for future reference
Rom manager is pointless unless you run cm7 nightlies. Get the recovery fixed for cm7 (first post of jt's cm7 thread in development) put miui rom on sd. Pull batt, flash fixed cm7 recovery in odin, insert battery (don't boot), 3 finger to recovery and flash miui. Profit.
good day.
First thank you for the replies very appreciated.
Tone_Capone I was going to try your method first. You are correct when I was on the updated firmware I did not flash the "fixed" 3e recovery did not realize there was one. My question now is I'm currently at 2e recovery, on the older firmware. Can I still follow those directions and put the modified 3e recovery onto the phone how it is. Or does the modified file count on other files being in place that I don't have since I'm downgraded? Do I need to update it again? I hate to ask but I just want to make sure.
chopper the dog Sorry about wrong section, thought q and a would be for commonly asked questions and the answers for them. I was gonna try this method then but I'm not sure if I choose bootloader in odin or pda like I did when downgrading the firmware.

refer to section 3...just replace ics rom with miui... although honestly I would go with ics 4.0

thanks everyone, droidstyle I followed your links directions and miui is up and running. Very appreciated. I considered ics but I'll wait a while.

Glad we got it figured out.
Just for future reference, It is customary of this forum that if someone were to find a post helpful, go ahead and hit the thanks button on their post. Some guys take this very seriously.
Okay, so I had a stock Note 2 fully updated software or whatever (if you go into 'Settings' then 'About phone' the 'Software update' part). I followed section 1a instructions (10 steps): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024207 and then this one for WIndows: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2118348 (I just followed the video instructions) and everything seemed to work out fine and I got Team Win Recovery.
One thing was that when I did a factory reset in Team Win recovery, the phone did not boot up at all and I had to use Odin to install Root66 stock VRALJB 4.1.1 12/2/12 like I did in the first set of instructions I did in order for my phone to boot up again.
But now when I try to do a software update, when the phone reboots it says the software update failed. It's also in the phone software update log that the update failed.
Every third party ROM I have ever used has blocked OTA's. Every alternate recovery I have ever used has blocked OTA's. This is intentional and is a very good thing. Just wait for the ROM of your choice to be gone through by our respected devs and flash their new version. Sure you have to wait a few more days, but at least you are not going to get your crap relocked and or bricked by Verizons crappy tactics. If you force the OTA's through the alternate recovery and every other layer of protection that the developers have put in to stop you from doing this, then you should not have rooted and jailbroken your device int he first place. IMO you deserve whatever you get if you do.
Later,
Jason
So OTA is the same thing as the Software Update on the phone? Thank you
Yes it is, I can see where that would cause some confusion if you didn't know For what it's worth, as long as you have root, your bootloader "jail broken", and an alternate recovery like TWRP, then go to the Android development section (or original android development, but these are not based on the factory source code and are probably not a good choice for a beginner), and download the .zip file for whichever ROM looks like you will like it. You will want the files that are listed as flashable from TWRP or CWM, typically they will be interchangeable and not dependent on which alternate recovery you chose. You then put the downloaded file on the sdcard in your device, reboot in recovery and use the recovery to flash the new ROM. You should be able to determine with a little research which ROM's are best supported and which will suit your needs the best.
Good Luck,
Jason
I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 in the United States (SCH-I545). I'm rooted on stock 4.3 (I5455VRUEMK2). I did this a long time ago, and don't recall which Root kit method I used.
Installed: SuperSU v2.01, Terminal Emulator 1.0.70, SQLite Editor 2.11. I do NOT have a custom recovery.
First goal: I want to install a custom recovery and do a Nandroid-type backup before taking any other steps. From what I am reading though, because I have 4.3/MK2 I can't install TWRP. What options do I have?
With a custom recovery in place, I would do a FULL backup before I would update to (or flash) a newer factory 5.x ROM. (I don't even know what current stock ROM version is o). I disabled the factory OTA notification service but I don't recall how I did that -- I think I used Titanium to Freeze one more apps?
Next I would want to root the (newer) stock ROM. Will I need to plan to update/change to appropriate Custom Recovery for newer stock ROM?
Later, I will probably try some Custom ROMs.
Basically, I am looking for a strategic outline of what steps I can take to update my phone while having flexible options going forward. My level of Android knowledge is low-ish. I don't understand a lot of the codespeak and acronyms, but I'm fairly technical and can read.
Thanks in advance for your guidance.
I'm also looking for this information.
I can't find any good information on getting from MK2 to something newer.
Usually posts with stuff like that are stickied, but these forums don't have anything like that, it looks like.
