Any idea why I can not pull in certain apps from the market?
Also are apps different for different android phones or are all apps equal?
What version of 2.1 are you running?
Protected apps can't be seen because 2.1 does not "officially" exist on the Eris. Work around here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=665430
I am running the firmware from march 15thish
I don't have my phone on me to get it exact
so explain to me how a protected app works....it sees that my phone is running 2.1 and flags it b/c if it ran 1.6 it would be ok?

Just to be clear you downloaded a 2.1 leak? Not upgraded from 1.5 to 2.1root? Either way, it looks like in the 2.1 leak the market was not opened for whatever reason in the code. This may be because it was a test release, I'm not quite sure. The reason that you can't see all of the apps on the market without a full market is because many of them are "protected" so they will only be visible if the proper market is being run. Since whatever firmware you are running does not grant full market access, these protected apps will not show up on searches or download lists. If you have an old version of the leak, and want a full market they just released a v4 leak. Theres a link on androidforums(dot)com and I'm sure theres one around here too. If you're rooted, market availability varies from ROM to ROM but many are getting market access.
v4 doesn't have full market either. the folks here are working on it, but if you want to whine, you'd better go talk to VZW and/or HTC.
And fair warning - this is all being discussed in a separate thread. Learn to use the search function airtas, or risk getting dressed down.. these folks get tired of answering the same questions again and again.

No, phone models differ and so do firmware versions. My original market fix app looked proportional on the eris, on the droid it took up a small part of the screen.

so when someone creates an app there is a different version out there for each type of phone?
is that what your saying?
Was curious what the lag was. I have a fully stock vibrant. Not by choice, my phone is hardware locked. It runs very smooth, opening apps is very snappy.

Some phones suffer slow performance that can be seen in certain areas like the market or generally while operating the the phone.
Thanks G1. I appreciate the response.

Is it undoable though?
Like I want my phone unrooted and un modded when the update comes out.
*I've heard having it unrooted and unmodded = less problems when updating?

Yes it is completely reversible. I would say look into the "tips and tricks sticky" & the "rom bible". Search the forums for ODIN & adb, because they will be need to be up & running to revert.
As for the OTA update, there are 3 things that could happen. 1. You'll lose root and it will be locked (till someone roots that specific code) 2. Possibly the code (any code for example) will include something that can cause your phone to brick, not permanently, but it's possible. 3 nothing at all could happen but the update.
If the updates are anything like what we see on other phones, someone here will have that sucker modded by the time you wake up the next morning.

If its reversible then can't we just reverse the root and lag fix and have no problems with the OTA update?
Yes. As long as you take the right steps you can go back to non-rooted vibrant & get the OTA
Ok, I was thinking about maybe using that one click root app I found on the market but i need to know how safe is it? and is there a fully awesomely working version of Froyo out there or even gingerbread I can use and if so how do I install it?
And when the official froyo update comes out will my phone still be able to revive the over the air update?
Using the OCLF/Root was completely safe and easy, for me at least.
No issues at all doing it, it went very smooth with no issues at all.
Yes -- you can still receive OTA updates once you've rooted.
Ian
def no gingerbread out there for you to run
uhmmm i think if you arent even sure how to root, maybe you shouldnt get yourself into a beta rom.

Safe as in what? Secure wise or bricking your device? The Vibrant is easy to root but secure wise you need to be careful since your device will be "open" to any program getting root access.
I see people use the click app to root their phones. Check it out on YouTube that's where I found the info. Personally I am not going to root my cuz I don't want to deal with the headaches. Yes I have root one android phone before & was successful. I enjoy putting different roms but when I flash CM6 one his first updates on that then later on couldn't change the rom. The reason cuz I had a low memory I was told on the phone internally. So I am taking no chances with phone.

Wait a sec fella. It doesn't work this way.
You cant type in all caps, then ps it "sorry for caps"
You should have stopped it when you saw it happening.
That would be like me raping you and then telling you i was sorry for it.

Too much work. Easier to add ps.
I be posting this from my wicked awesome vibrant!
Before Rooting....
1) learn how to use the keyboard
2) find out what Froyo and the consequences of installing a beta are
3) No, if you install Froyo probably you won't be able to get the OTA update when available and, you may not be able to roll down if you want to.
I would stay out of it if i was you
not worthy to just root to flash the leaked Froyo... You only get the 'skin' of Froyo.. there is no JIT and GPS is not working
I would not root, because judging by you, you dont know much about android.
Few devices have froyo,
No devices have gingerbread.
If you think gingerbread, or even froyo is out then chances are you dont know how to use root features.
ps. I am not flaming, k?

I understand what your saying, and believe me I know a lot about android and actually a little bit about rooting but I am super paranoid about bricking my phone for two reasons:
I love my phone.
I had to pay full price for it.
What I don't understand that much is about different roms and whatnot. As for the Gingerbread thing I was kidding, but I was serious about the Froyo thing...but after reading this thread i have decided that if I do ever root with the one click root app it will only me to install simple things like lag fix, adfree, etc. Thank you for your help.
To do it again, I would not root mine. It has been less stable since I rooted it. Crashes to a black screen that says "user fault not kernel panic" and "upload mode". This is using a simple one-click root. So I advise against it.
What you'd find, should a problem occur, is that there is no going back. Folks recommend install this patch and that patch, and deeper down the rabbit hole (further away from stock) you go.

you know the one-click root that comes with the one-click lag fix? The unroot part didn't work.
This was my experience hacking on the g1 too... sometimes things worked, sometimes they didn't. When they don't, it's a lousy trip.
I just get sick of messing with it sometimes, and just want it to work.
So I have a Thunderbolt, got it the first day that it came out. Made the decision that I would stick with stock until I'd had enough of it.
Long story short, my boyfriend got the EVO 3D, and rooted it within the week. Naturally I got jealous.
So here's my dilemma, I found the [Updated: 3/26]Easyroot + S-Off [Version 1.6.3.11] root, but I forgot that I had updated my software.
I did a factory reset hoping that it would reverse the update, but apparently I lost all of my information for no reason, because [news flash] it didn't work!
I guess my question now is... What are my options?
Am I screwed and stuck with stock now?
Will there be a new root developed for {stupid-people-who-updated-their-software} like me?
Is there an updated root already out there that I can try?! <~ I've been looking with no sucess!
Please help me!!!!
{{{{&& for those of you who are experienced.. I have been searching the forums for 2 days and I found a post about EVO's, but not Thunderbolt. So I'm sorry if you have managed to see a post with this type of question before. I did try the [Updated: 3/26]Easyroot + S-Off [Version 1.6.3.11] root, but nothing happens. & I didn't know where else to look.}}}
I don't think there has been a new root method for the updated RUU.
So I do believe your out of luck for now.

I already tried the easy AND 1 click root.. both didn't work, which is y I decided to ask for help on here.
I just wanted to know if there is a way to uninstall the manufacturer's update or if there is a Rom out that works for 1.7 something software... Not run around in circles on the same easy root that I already know won't work bc it says that version 1.2... And lower will work.

My wife is planning to get a T-Bolt pretty soon and without knowing what 'version' of s/w it will have when it arrives, you're saying 'no worries'. If she wants it rooted (our Eris' have been rooted since the exploit for it was available -- jcase was involved too !), I can use the manual (command-line) method in his sticky thread ?

Current rooting methods (manual preferred) will work fine for any stock officially released firmware because it's all still unpatched Froyo so the exploit used still works.
The only time in the future that this will stop working is when the Gingerbread OTA rolls out.
Reason I ask is I am positive I've read from others who've gotten T-Bolts and mistakenly allowed a s/w update, presumably OTA, and now they can't root.
Is GB being pushed to a small # of phones, by chance ?

Nope. User error on their part. They probably tried one of the auto-root scripts and then blamed it failing on the OTA.

I completely agree. Many of the rooting scripts out there are either out of date or use obsolete exploits. The OTA back in April, I think it was, required new exploits be used. Jcase has been on that like white on rice and I'm going to say this community stands strongly behind jcase and the method he's outlined. It has the best success rate, without question. Plus, everyone always says its much easier than it looks. If setting up the SDK or ADB is confusing, we are always glad to help too.

and this is true!!! because last night my new friend loonatik helped me step by step root my phone! and now i LOVE my gingeritis!
my phone was updated [by me when the update first came out] to version 1.70.something.. and i was still able to do a root. it was manual, but considering i had no idea what i was doing.... once i got going with it the task seemed less daunting.

Okay, my wife got the Thunderbolt yesterday and within minutes of activating it, it prompted us for a s/w update, in the 73.xx mb range in size. I don't know what s/w version it's currently on and I kept rejecting the update. I need to remind her to do the same -- hopefully it's not too late. Or, is there no harm in taking the update ?

There's no harm in updating, but there's no point if you plan on rooting it. Part of the rooting method will wipe everything and reset it to an earlier software version. You'll then have to update(Using ROMs from here, not the OTA) to a newer version to catch up to the latest release or whatever ROM you choose to run. You're better off rooting now, then worrying about updates.
The wife & I got our Maxx's last night. After working with it a bit, I think I want to root them to remove bloatware and the locked web pages. I know that stuff doesn't affect performance, but it's annoying to have to scroll past when I'm looking for something else.
From posts here though, it looks like VZW is pushing out the ICS update. So I'm thinking that it might be best for me to wait & get that before I root..
Thoughts?
My razr maxx was already rooted.
I installed voodoo ota rootkeeper from the market.
After protecting my root, i went and performed the download and update.
Once it was finished, i restored my root using voodoo's restore.
Very simple and i still have root access.
I'm not sure about how good/reliable the methods for rooting ics are, but there are plenty of good ones for gingerbread.
It is just a matter of personal preference.

In ICS you can disable the bloat so you wouldn't need to root (although I do suggest it for further customization)
