So, I had to flash back to JFD because I soft-bricked my phone. Now when I updated, it took me to KB5.
I'm puzzled because all of the things I've used to try to root it just fail. Does anyone know how to root KB5, since nothing has worked so far?

There might be easier ways, but try this, think the v4 will do it. Theres a few posts in the bible with instructions if this doesn't work for you.

just a quick reminder when you flashed KB5 where you on 2.1 or 2.2
and if i am not mistaking you must be on 2.2 or Higher.

ALL the stock 2.2 roms for our phone have a new recovery (3e). Because of this, the usual methods to root (the update.zip methods) don't work, and you'll get a signature verification error.
You need to root using SuperOneClick, and this will root your phone. But you also need to clear space in the /system partition in order to install busy box (you might think it is already installed, but reboot your phone and it won't be).
In order to flash .zip files, you either need to odin/hiemdall a voodoo kernel, or replace the stock 3e recovery with a modded one. I'm not going to do any linking because simple searching in the vibrant dev thread will yield you your results.

So.......anyone wanna make a tutorial vid?

You can get root that way on KB5, but you *cannot* install recovery on KB5. If you had recovery before KB5 and upgraded via CWM flashing, you still have CWM recovery. But if you ODIN or KIES to KB5, and then try to install CWM Recovery, it will fail and you will not be able to make it work.
Short version: Root on KB5 Possible. If you want CWM Recovery, you have to downgrade to an older build and get your Recovery working there, then upgrade using a CWM flashable ONLY.

I just want root. I have no intention of flashing ROMs. I'm on a pure stock KB5.
Can you tell me which steps in those instructions can be skipped, if any?

Ok. Looking at the Wiki instructions I see this:
2. Boot the Samsung Vibrant into download mode by holding down Volume Up & Volume Down while connecting the microUSB to it.
I'm trying to visualize this. It sounds like you hold down the power button, and the volume up/down rocker with one hand, while inserting the USB into the phone with the other hand. Is that right? How critical is the timing of inserting the USB?
I've searched YouTube but am not finding this specific "boot while inserting USB" procedure.
Also, from the instructions it appears I would be installing a non-stock kernel. Is that required just to get root?
By doing this are there implications for the upcoming GB upgrade from Samsung? In other words, would I need to undo something before doing a Kies GB upgrade?
Lastly, I see the "Voodoo/disable-lagfix" folder has to be created, and am wondering if those get installed by this procedure.
If I should be asking this somewhere else just let me know. Thanks.

You can update to gb version but not recommended, when out of course
i Recommend to you when we have a gb version to just flash the new radio or/and bootloader, and keep flashing cyanogen firmware through Recovery

Understand I need to create the folder, just wondering if Voodoo and lagfix get installed by this procedure automatically.
So, volume up and volume down, but don't press the power button to boot?
The complications are what I was concerned about. I don't need another hobby. I just want root. That's it. I want to be able to upgrade to stock GB when it's available. Sounds like it's more trouble than it's worth for the few things I want to do with root (block ads, etc).
If that's the case, no problem, I just want to understand before I proceed.

SuperOneClick doesn't work on KB5 Stock FroYo - at least not my phone. Just freezes at step 7 for like... ever.
Anyone can recommend an easy root app that has an unroot button? I just want to remove some bloatware that auto-starts...

You need to modify the stock to recovery because we don't have the signature keys that allow flashing of different firmware on the phone.
This is a decent guide.
Or if you have Odin working on your PC, follow this guide. After getting back to stock firmware, root-->install rom manager w/CWM recovery-->flash custom firmware.
Edit: forgot MCL homie.

so what one will let me downgrade the frimware? and will it walk me though it? but i cant get odin on my computer cuz the website is down

I found this some dude named (DJ Quick) on Big Resource said to do this
(You're still running the stock rom, you just rooted your phone, that's all. Here's what I would do:
1. Uninstall Rom Manager first.
2. Unroot your phone.
3. Go to your dialer, and type in *2767*3855#. This code is used for factory format.
It'll remove all files and settings including the internal memory storage,
and reinstall the phone firmware from when you first took it out of the box. )
but i tryed it it didnt bring me to android 2.1....

You can get the needed software in the sticky Noob in the general section by S15274N you will need
your USB drivers from Samsung loaded on your computer
Odin 1.7 or higher (this will load on your computer as well)
2.1 JFD stock tar. and 512 pit file
Superoneclick rooting file (you can get this from unlockr.com or other places)
Look in the noob bible for the how to or do a search for a video pon youtube there are a number of them
Reflash to stock then> boot up the phone then> root the phone then> reboot the phone> then Download Rom manager then> then hookup the phone to the computer again make sure debugging is clicked on and place the custom rom you want on your internal sd card then> use the Clockwork mod in that program and boot into recovery then > pick install zip from sd card then pick choose sd card then flash that then > reboot and you are done.
Before doing this make sure you have backed up all you information on to the computer as well as making a nandroid backup

Have you tried this method? Looks like others are having success and as stated in the OP this process does not look to require ODIN although you will need access to a PC.

This is the method i have used to Root in the past(never from official 2.2 via kies) and it looks like this wont werk for you jump to last couple pages. Although if i were in ur shoes this would still be my prefered method(as this is the way i've always done it and i am personally comfortable with) If it were me i would ODIN to stock 2.1 and then root from there this way. If you chose this route of course you will need access to a PC and ODIN as well. Good luck!

I have just gotten myself a SG2, my first Android device.
I probably wouldn't want to root, at least so early, if it weren't for Root Call Blocker Pro which I want/need to install.
So I wanted to ask a couple of related questions:
1. Is there a way of rooting without losing all the apps + settings? If not, can you recommend a could backup app?
2. Could someone please point me to the EASIEST step-by-step guide on how to root a SG2? I have found a couple of threads but am not sure if they are the most up-to-date/best/most appropriate for a novice.
3. Will I be able to apply the official SG2 updates from Samsung after rooting? (OK, so that was three questions....)

Rooting using CF-root replaces the phones kernel (core of the OS) with a modified one, with clockworkmod recovery (nandroid backup, etc), it also includes insecure adb (adb that can run as root not just standard user) and copy's the superuser apk to the system dir and sets permissions.
This is all done via a special initramfs attached to an otherwise stock kernel.

why would you want to root and then use OTA stock roms?
If you find you can't get OTA stock updates after a root (i.e. if Samsung decide to utilise some mad kernel reset counter ban hammer) then simply check XDA where I guarantee the OTA stcks will appear pretty quickly!
Things to consider:
1. Rooting is very very good for numerous reasons that can be found everywhere on XDA - and google.
2. You can replace the kernel for root but continue to use stock rom (and use a jig to replace the reset counters) for pretty much stock functionality.
3. If you root and don't like what you get (i.e. you're mental) then it is just as easy to replace all factory rom/kernel information (which are always available in the original development thread) but you should invest in a jig (from ebay) so you can reset the counters (you can do this via software but I find a jig far simpler).

Rooting won't lose your apps. Titanium Backup Pro is the best way to go.
Install Kies, exit Kies, open Odin, phone in download mode + plug it in, don't touch any of the Odin settings, load "PDA" with chainfire's kernel -> go!
It's really straightforward, but it can be a little nerve wracking the first time.

I just rooted, and it "only" took me about 15 min including the downloading of the various files (still way more though than the 30 sec. it should take according to the Chainfire post!! ).
@m4rshall's summary made it clear that the steps are really very few and simple, because when you read the other posts, it seems like a much more complex process due to their size, though they are absolutely necessary to get all the details.
Some follow up questions:
1. What would I need to do if I wanted to the original, factory state?
Not that I'm planning to, but in case I notice some issue that makes me decide to go back (I read in that loooong thread that some people noticed slower connections after rooting??)?
2. From what I've gathered, the yellow exclamation mark at boot is purely "cosmetic" and does not effect in any way at all the performance of the device. Correct?

Clockworkmod recovery is a replacement recovery, it allows you to preform full device snapshot backups, to allow you to restore your phone to any point in time.
Allows you to flash CWM compatible zips.
Mount your SD to a computer while in recovery to copy things to it.

[Q] Can't find a solution, root vibrant with froyo and no usb

Ok, i would like to root my vibrant. I previously updated to froyo and am aware of the reasons you should flash back to 2.1 to root. But, my usb port does not work, and all the methods I have researched to root my phone with out being hooked to a pc still need the usb in order to flash back to 2.1.
Is there a rooting method i've missed? One that can be done with the usb and with froyo?

Your USB port doesn't work or your computer doesn't recognize your phone? Because that would be two different things altogether. If your computer doesn't recognize your phone, then just install the drivers (they can be found in the AIO toolbox in the Dev section stickied at the top). Load that on your computer, load .net on there two, open it up, install drivers and then plug your phone in after they are loaded. Will take a few minutes to pull in but if you are Windows 7 you should see an icon in lower left about it.
Also, I cannot understand why people keep using Oneclick or Superoneclick to root their phones. The past week has been filled with problems stemming from them both. All you have to do is go to the Noob Guide (stickied in this very section) and follow the section on Rooting. I rooted, downloaded a ROM/Kernel and flashed it all on my phone without ever plugging it into a PC.

That didn't work either. I'm at a total loss for words. I don't think there is any way to root my vibrant without being able to use the usb port.

If you are just wanting to Root your phone that can be done easily, but you seem to have a much bigger problem b/c the USB is a really important function for transfering files like musi, vids,...
If you jsut want to root your phone, go to the Noob guide stickied at the top of this forum and download the update.zip (you can do this over 3g or wifi) put it on you sd card, reboot into recovery, blah, blah ,blah instructions are there.

There are two options here. Choose before you start.

B – use the other update.zip (1.7MB) and this will flash CWR for you – allowing you to immediately flash a custom ROM.. I do this because it's faster.

A: Download this update.zip file to root your phone. You plan to install Rom Manager to flash CWR and a new ROM later.
B: Download this update.zip file to flash CWR... you will need to flash a custom ROM for Root. I prefer this method.
Also, download the ROM you plan to flash (assuming you are not sticking on JFD – why would you).

[Q] first android first root, some questions

so i have the i777 and i rooted using a guide on the android central forum
basically i downloaded kies, odin, cwm, and superoneclick
i put the cwm.tar file through odin, and than ran superoneclick, and i was rooted pretty easily
i than downloaded rom manager and through there i flashed CWM. I tried to make a back up using rom manager but that failed, no biggie i hear other people have the same problem. I boot up into CWM using rom manager and it says stuff like "failed to verify whole file signature"
im not sure if this means i rooted incorrectly?
i made a back up just fine using CWM. However i found out this stuff about flash increments and how i flashed a custom CWM kernal or something (sorry my definitions in this subject are still noob)
i decided i want to get rid of the yellow triangle + i9100 message every boot, no biggie but i am here to learn and i figure might as well if i can. I read a couple threads here and im not sure if this is my answer but i think it is please advise
my plan is to go back completely as if i never rooted and than root by using a stock rom/kernal so i dont get the error triangle message as well as the incorrect international i9100 display

i am under the impression that if i flash the .tar file that is 200+mb (why so big) that i will be RE ROOTED and COMPLETELY stock, therefore no error message and no international thing popping up
also, no more flash counter increments ? << this one is also important as this is one major reason i want to re root
im not really sure but i think that by flashing this new .tar it will over ride my custom.tar file that i do not want any more, i dont know how to get rid of it so this is the only thing i can think of
im worried because i dont know if i have to UNROOT before i install entropys thing or if it will just over ride

The write ups he does are top notch and should be mandatory reading for first time visitors.
The file is so big because it contains the entire android os.
The issues you're having in cwm sound like clockworkmod needs to be reflashed.
The triangle will be removed simply by the stock kernel being replaced. The flash counter as of now can only be reset by a usb jig ~ less than $10.
Though a few have reported returning the phone for warranty issues and they did not check the flash counter.
The only way the flash counter is tripped is by using pc Odin to flash a non stock kernel.

There's a stock plus root package. One of the best ways to root in my opinion.
Root means installing SuperUser.apk, su, and busybox. That's it. The stock + root package has those already included, but also gives you the bone stock kernel.
You install a custom kernel to, among other things, get ClockworkMod Recovery.

in reality, 'rooting' your phone is nothing more than placing 2 files on the /system (only one is really needed, since you can download Superuser from the market)
what happens is this:
android version release (say 2.3.5)
extremely smart people find way to exploit a memory hole in the OS, and create a 'rooting' method. what this method does is exploit that hole, which allows for a 'temp root' while it injects the needed files for root
needed files for root:
/system/bin/su <- this is the binary that allows you to retain root access
/system/app/Superuser.apk
without root access, /system is a read-only partition. utilizing the exploit, it will create temp root, then remount the /system partition as read/write, allowing your rooting tool to inject the required files into /system
rooting actually has nothing to do with the device at a true hardware level. it is all within the OS itself. anything outside the OS (recovery, boot, bootloaders, etc) dont get 'rooted' because root is only access to the /system within the OS
samsungs have this awesome ability to be easily rooted via CWM. its extremely easy with ODIN or heimdall to flash recovery/new kernel with recovery built in, and use a cwm zip file to inject the needed files into /system rather than relying on an exploit to do it for you.
its a common misconception that i hate to see when people associate rooting with access to anything outside the OS itself.

ok im back, i read a lot of the guides n a lot of pages and i successfully rooted using entropys 2a method return to stock + root
now i have a 2-3 second delay in my home button, and an additional 1 second delay when i turn my phone ion with the power button to show my display
i also added CWM by using the android terminal and that worked
but im regretting all this because of the delay, my error message is gone so thats good but now i have a delay
what could be the problem? i dont remember any one mentioning this issue and if im the only one than i dont know what to do, also i noticed the flash counter is still at 1 so i know i did everything right

Sounds like you still have reading to do. And kudos to you for taking what they said as constructive criticism.
The flash counter can only be reset by a usb jig. Mobile Tech videos make some very good quality ones.
The delay from the home button is due to the vlingo app shortcut being tied to the home button (double tap home button) so it's waiting to see if you hit it twice before it takes you to the home screen. Cusom roms remove the vlingo app from being there which helps cut down on the delay.
But you may notice it more since what you did. And you should. By adding cwm you likely flashed Entropy512's kernel. Which is an awesome kernel. One of the ways that kernel helps battery life is by setting the cpu govener to conservative. It slows the cpu from jumping too high too quick. That explains why you may have not noticed the delay before you did anything. As well as the delay from unlocking the phone.
For me the extra battery life is worth it. If you don't like the delay one of the easier ways to set it back to ondemand (stock) is to use the app SetCpu:

Alright this is not the question you think it is! After rooting from THIS THREAD, I already googled and installed Link2SD, ROM Manager, Titanium Backup, Super Manager, BusyBox, Quick Boot and SetCPU. I have tested all of them except Titanium Backup and ROM Manager.
What I am confused is, CF-Root and ClockWorkMod Recovery. My plan is definitely to install Latest CWM v5 so that I can apply CM7 later (at least after more 5 months till I'm working on one development project related to Maps & GPS of Android platform). But as I heard, some themes & customizations needs CF-Root from THIS LINK. Which i find quite confusing how to apply. My questions are:
1) How to apply CF-Root? Please explain steps and Give me Attachments to download. Will my device work same as right now? Because I need my device to run fully so that I can test my written android applications directly via USB Debugging.
1-A) Do I need to unroot before applying CF-Root? If yes, what about the soft links of apps I have made into SD Card through Link2SD?
1-B) Will CF-Root include CWM?
2) Suppose I have CF-Root or CWM installed successfully and what happens to my stock recovery? Is there any way to keep it backed up so that When I need to send it to service station they wouldn't know about it? (By the way, what is the Stock Recovery image's location?)
3) Please also give some suggestions which you think I should keep in mind. I want to keep my ace as close to stock as possible. I also don't know about how to take snapshot of current ROM from Custom Recovery Mode and of Applications from Titanium Backup so that if anything could go wrong I could recover from CWM.

Now to answer your questions, but firstly:
CF-Root is a kernel, adapted by the awesome ketut.kumajaya. CMW is a custom recovery. I'm saying this because I'm getting the impression that you think CF-Root and CMW are the same thing.
1. Most recent custom ROMs already provide CF-Root, so once you install the ROM, you'll have CF-Root.
1.a. No. At least, I don't think so, because flashing a kernel/ROM doesn't require root access as a dependancy
1.b. Not to my knowledge. I've been using CF-Root for so long, I forgot what the stock kernel feels like.
2. You know what? I actually have no idea. The only way I can think of to restore the stock recovery is by flashing a stock ROM via Odin. If you take it to a service counter, I doubt the counter will notice, but I would be pretty doubtful for the people who actually service your phone.
3. If you want it to be as close as stock ROM, use the stock ROM; it's that simple!
But if you want to use a custom ROM with the closest resemblance to stock ROMs, I would recommend the GingerReal ROM; it's essentially stock ROM, spiced up with performance tweaks.
3.a. You can do an entire system backup (Nandroid backup) with CWM. Just boot into CWM (hold Power+Home button when the phone is off), and choose "backup and restore" > "Backup" and wait. To restore, do the same things, except pick "Restore"
3.b. Doing a Titanium Backul is... complicatedly simple to answer. I'd recommend you to look up their FAQ or something.

First of all thanks for replying. And sorry I have messed up to explain my question more clearly... But, I do perfectly understand difference between two of those. CF-Root is custom kernel and CWM is custom recovery mode which provides a lot more facilities that stock recovery wouldn't.
First of all, I am on Stock ROM 2.3.4 DDKQ5 and I want to stay on it without flashing ROMs. Because I need my phone working super fine till I complete my project of android application development.
In what I am confused is, I want to apply some themes/bootanimations which according to what I read, requires CF-Root (which already covers root, Super User, CWM and BusyBox)... I have all of them except CWM in my phone.. What I think of a possibility that I could just apply CF-Root and use themes etc. which automatically will install CWM helpful for me taking snapshots of stock ROM as backup before I change even theme.
My question is: Chainfire's Post says different method to apply CF-Root and Ketut.Kumajaya says different method to apply CF-Root. However, I understand only the method which says go into recovery mode and apply update. But that post fails how CWM 4 automatically booted.
I want to be on safe side asking proper procedure before I proceed.

Chainfire's method invloves flashing via Odin if i saw it right.
Ketut's method is of flasihng CF-Root via recovery
I recommend flashing via recovery,its safer,easier and faster.
Don't worry,theres nothing such as Firmware compatibilty,its all about stability and perfomance.I am from India too and is using KPH firmware which is European firmware.I syggest you flash the KPH firmware,its the most widely used firmware.You would not face any problem if you flash another region's firmware.Flashing a different firmware is not easy atleast in my opinion.You just need Odin to do that.I suggest you read hubix's step by step detailed tutorial on that.

Thanks.. what I don't understand is there are bunch of files under Ketut's attachment. Which ones to apply in recovery mode and in which order??
Please help me out with that.
Also, if there's any bug like Wi-Fi or anything else pesters me, how would I revert it back to original custom ROM?
PS: I have just rooted my phone. CWM is not installed yet. Hope it will be installed by CF-Root directly.

If you have a bug,you could always restore a backup by using CWM.
I suggest you flash CWM before you flash cf-root.

lol...ketut cf-root kernel is the only kernel for stock(samsung) ROMs present here.Of course it is made by ketut . All other kernels are for cm7.
