.....to having a working Gingerbread rom for the Vibrant? Is this rom going to contain the keys to getting a fully functional build?
One can only hope.
Sent from my T959 using XDA App
We already have 3+ gingerbread roms from a month ago... Why do you want a build that will take longer? The devs can probably put the features from it to ours but that may be it, the remove service.jar won't work I dont think so.
according to the samsung site Vibrant is to be supported through a 2.3 gingerbread release, but then that is the Samsung site and they probably release 2.3 after we all moved on to something else. One of the problems most phone manufacturers of android have discovered, is how quickly the upgrading demand is. They did not anticipate that we the public would get so savvy so fast.
But My guess 2.3 release will be in Aug-Sept after the S2 release
Official i900 rom rolling out already!!!

"Fully Functional"
Nope, never.
Most of our GPS sucks, and if GPS isn't included its not a "fully functional" rom.
so in theory, no we will never have it.

GPS works fine for some people, even without the hardware fix. So don't say we'll never have it, unless you have some insider info the rest of us don't have. This release probably won't get us any closer, but who's to say we won't get a 2.3 release for our phones. Samsung isn't as horrible at updates as we used to think. Most phones released prior didn't see it past one major update. Samsung has pushed out two major updates for a phone that's coming up on its 1st birthday. Can't say the same for many other OEMs.

I didn't say GPS doesnt work for ALL, but be truthful, most of the GPS of Vibrants do not work, and probably wont work until you do the hardware fix or get another vibrant made at a earlier date.
I wasn't talking about updates directly from Samsung, and i've never questioned their update-mentality. I receive updates on my Samsung TV/Blu-Ray player i bought a year ago still.
I was talking about a "FULLY FUNCTIONAL" rom.
Most of the roms we already have, GPS doesn't work for most, so what makes you think it'll randomly work when we get 2.3? A Software update isn't going to do much except make it about 50 ft accuracy or something like that.

GPS doesn't work on the new 2.3 roms because we don't have drivers, it's a software issue. That will ABSOLUTELY change with an official release. For those with working GPS,(such as me, others who have done the hardware fix, and people who got lucky with revised Vibrant hardware) this WOULD be a fully functional rom.
I didn't say the update would magically fix a hardware problem, but the fact is the GPS issues have nothing to do with the rom, only the hardware. However with CM7, it is an issue with the rom. That's why GPS works for no one, when it worked fine on 2.2 for those without hardware issues. There is a difference between a crippled rom and crippled hardware.

There is a reason it's not out yet, it's not even close to being released yet. There are problems that are being worked on in the ROM update. I can tell you that you probably won't see an update officialy released until maybe the end of march. How do I know this you ask? I am an engineer with sprint. I myself have the Mogul and am frustrated with the lack of GPS etc.
There's no lack of GPS anymore But there is a lack of being able to send pictures!

you have the gps update from a "leaked" or cooked ROM
Anyway the reason for the holdup is that they need it to run stable. Obvioudly it will run the new apps fine, but then the speaker might not work etc...
the official rom will obviously have:
GPS
Sprint TV
6.1
and supposedly a better task manager. Also help out the memory leak problem.
REV A
The sprint touch may get the GPS and REV A update first
It's nice to see Sprint being so concerned and cautious with their update. But then again, you work for Sprint, so shouldn't your statement be, "...we need it to run stable..." ?

1) You don't reply to questions directed toward you because you're full of bologna
2) You do reply, and give us some bologna about how Sprint decided to not include it for some oddball reason.
If Sprint TV really does get put on a ROM in the future, then i'll give you respect, but until it happens, you can't just come into a community spouting off fiction hoping that people will think you're cool.. Back on topic, since all the good quotes have been taken, I'll believe this when I see it. I mean, it would be nice, but the day the OEM's give us a good ROM (that can't be made better by the likes of DCD, No2Chem, etc) is the day I stop using all devices and move to a cabin in the mountains without power...
The Touch may get updated first? I'm beginning to wonder if the next official Mogul update comes pre-installed in a Mogul 2.
First post here (from my Mogul) but long time lurker. Just running 2.17 but I'm tempted to install a dcd. My main concern is the radio stability as I like to stream alot of audio.
chubzilla, you had to know when you posted who you were, you would take alot of shots from people on this site. There are alot of angry people here that have been waiting for sprint and HTC to get off there butts and fix the problems with the mogul.
I guess what I would like to see is an official response from sprint about the status of the ROM Update other than "Additionally, HTC is currently developing a separate ROM update which enables the EV-DO Rev. A and GPS capabilities that are already built into the Mogul hardware. Sprint and HTC plan to make this software ROM available in early 1Q 2008."
Outdated information like this just inflames customers.

Of course, it's better. However, you'll likely have to flash back to stock 2.1 JFD as I'd expect to you won't be able to update directly from JI5. Even the JI5 update forced people to do that (for example those that were on JI2 / JI4), I'd expect more of the same. There are those who have no problem doing this and that's fine. I'm just warning those who aren't / might not be.

Thanx, but I sorta needed that working GPS last week, not soon. Besides, "soon" is such an evasive term.
This makes me recollect the June 8th outing of a policy statement by Cole Brodman, Chief Technology Officer @ T-Mobile titled "No Phone Left Behind". It was in regards to assuring owners of the HTC Mytouch3G that they'd be receiving a Froyo update.
Nearly four months later and zip for the MT3G from Tmobile or HTC.
Maybe I'm wrong as my knowledge of timelines is from the inside of my addled head, but I do not believe T-Mobile has had a successful OTA of *ANY* Android phone in their stable this year at all. It's not the most encouraging development. (I do recall the Behold II 1.6 OTA, but it was eventually pulled for bricking phones....and led to me getting my Vibrant for free from T-Mobile before the official Vibrant launch...long story).
Granted, T-Mobile does not develop firmware, so they are at the mercy of the phone manufacturers. Still, if there's any issue that is at the core of Android angst, it is this one.
Just so I don't come across as a troll, I love my Vibrant. Compared to the Behold II I had and every other smartphone I've had it's leaps and bounds ahead of them all. I just get irritated when P.R. and "spin" get out of control...
Of course, this thread was a warning to the people who hadn't yet flashed JI5 / Kies and were still uncomfortable with doing it. Obviously, it's not people who are (already) comfortable. Knowledgeable people are certainly free to ignore and flash away.
This is BS. T-Mobile... how soon is soon? How long have we heard there would be an update to the MyTouch? I cannot and will not wait around for them to OTA anything. I will be very shocked if I get an update in the next month. I know i sound a little pessimistic but who wouldn't?
This is nonsense, installing this update does not prevent me from ODIN to any other firmware. I went directly from JI4 to JI5, so whoever said that I cannot do that is very confused.

That's because you ODIN flashed it.
Kies looked for the JFD product code, then gave you the option to update.

True. I'd like to think the probability of bricking over OTA would be lower. Since it would be an official update they'd also likely be / feel more obligated to provide whatever support they wanted to.

This isn't meant to be a whine post, I'm just asking so I can better understand the Galaxy S series.
The Captivate is part of the Galaxy S family, why did Samsung release working Gingerbread with GPS but the Vibrant gets nothing? Isn't it the same hardware, just different form?
the captivate has a working gps because of the way samsung uses the software to call gps on the i9k compared to how the vibrant uses software calls to the gps.
The vibrant is different enough to where i9k stuff doesn't work, but the captivate works in the same way.
(hope fully the way i worded things isn't to confusing).

Hm interesting. So when coding for each separate Galaxy S device do they start with the same base for each and then just branch off that and modify it however the carrier has specified? Or would each be built from scratch individually? It kind of seems like each would be made separately if calls to the gps are used differently on hardware that's very similar.
cool, thanks for the explanation geoffcorey, i understand it perfectly now.

As of JVH, one of the latest GB builds, there is very little difference.
Example. When I first started porting the Simply Galaxy/Honey series we were working with Froyo(2.2.1) and a lot had to be changed out or fixed, GPS, wifi, data, key mapping plus more. Because it was still Froyo based a lot of the code was still the same as ours so we could simply replace the GPS files and others and it worked. Gingerbread calls GPS completely different so we can't just slide our files in. The good thing though is that, I believe, Samsung is moving to a more universal build. On GB wifi is the same, actually almost everything. The only thing needed to port GB was a minor change to key mapping and headset and everything works with the exception of GPS.
Now as far as that goes the GPS chips are different and require different drivers in order to work. At least that's my understanding of the GPS. We Vibrant owners may have gotten the shaft when it came to GPS.

GPS works in several of our Ginger roms. It can just be kind of sketchy at times.
Didn't want to clam up the CM9 thread with this so am asking here. I am currently running rooted stock GB on my Photon and since hearing about official ICS probably being dropped for Photon, I'm seriously considering unlocking and flashing CM9.
However, since I use this phone for business I need to know exactly what is working currently and what is not. I have not been able to find a working/non-working listing for the current build in Joker's thread and have read through the "fixes" thread.
I know 4g is not working (obviously). I also have read that camcorder and possibly mms is not working. Is this true? Saw there may be a version with mms working? How about bluetooth, gps, camera, etc? Any wifi or wireless tether issues? Is there anything with limited functionality that has no real fix yet?
**EDIT...Have given CM9 a shot and with some testing had to switch to something else.
Camera is sketchy, kinda depends on who you ask. Everything else pretty much works. Even if you find something funky it'll probably get fixed within a couple of days. Gotta love the speed of the updates.
I've run into more trouble with apps not being ICS-compliant than with the ROM itself, which is what prevents me from getting too excited.
I haven't heard anything about the official ICS being dropped though; most of that comes from people in panic mode after the EOL leak. Motorola could still support the Photon for a long while after Sprint's EOL date. EOL basically means no new ones to be sold, not that it never existed. I saw Sprint selling Heroes a couple of months ago and they were yanked years ago.

Thing that concerned me about the EOL release is Sprint stating that the only updates that will be released for those devices are critical updates. Sprint will still have to test and approve ICS once Moto is done with it which may not happen now.
As for CM9, does camcorder work for you? Are you on the latest build?
I switched back to stock so I can't test it but the still camera worked fine for me this morning. I was running 0.4.2.1.
Anyone know where I can get the pudding unlocker? Google doesn't turn up anything for me and links are down.
Edit...I used the smaller one. Noticed it is unlocked with that so ignore my request.
Well I'm on MIUI 2.3.16, which is based on Joker's CM9, and my video camera is extremely laggy. It also crashes when I try to hit the stop record button. Also, flash player in the browser is messed up. For the most part though everything works. You can get MMS working by using GoSMSPro, or setting up APNs.
Wifi, and wireless tether works perfectly fine for me. Hope this helps.
Edit, The3Bill just put up a fix for MMS.

I have snooped around for a while in the development part of this forum, but it seems like either A2DP is listed as non working, or it's just not mentioned. Are there any KitKat ROMs with it working? I would like to upgrade my wife's phone to something better than the last official ROM, and I'm very satisfied with KitKat on my own devices, but she uses her phone in her car to play music through the BT enabled stereo, so it needs A2DP. If none are working now, is there a chance to get something that's working with A2DP in the near future?

Some, or maybe all, CM KitKat ROMS use Bluez for Bluethooth. At present, bluetooth is working fully on these roms, except music streaming through A2DP. Exactly what you need.
I assume it'll be fixed in next release of Bleuz, which will be version 5.17 (yo can follow this on www.bluez.org). A week after the release of this version from Bluez - we'll most probably have the first KitKat Roms with bluethooth fully operational.

Hahaha you are always welcomed! You did the best thing :good:
@Mastiff
Go to bluez.org
All KitKat roms on this forum use it as their Bluetooth stack. When they list a2dp as working it will work.
Thanks! But according to them, on the 11th of March:
"On the Android side by far the biggest feature addition is full support for A2DP 1.3 and AVRCP 1.5. Several other profiles, such as HFP and GATT have continued receiving a fair amount of patches as well, but they are not considered complete yet."
So that should mean that it's already working and has done so for almost a month. Or do I misunderstand it?
Our plaform is tricky. Is not enought BlueZ support (they work on Nexus devices) we need adapt our platform to BlueZ, because old Sony code is deprecated
OK, thanks. A bit more complicated than Hamza thought, then. Well, I'll probably just have to wait a bit longer.
Any news after 2 months?

Yeah, one month ago I got tired of waiting and bought an Xperia Z1 Compact for my wife... She actually took to the size quite easily, I thought it would be too big for her, but I guess the P had sort of primed her for it. Unlike the the P om it's final stock ROM the Z1 Compact on KitKat is very stable.
