First off I would like to say I know this has prob been asked before and that there is a way you can just use the official 3g hotspot for verizon for free but my main question is will there be a kernel or is there a kernel that currently supports the infrastructure mode on wifi tether and will the new source code that was recently released by Samsung help devs maybe release a modified kernel that will provide infrastructure mode? The reason why I ask is because I really badly need this feature to happen and I know I can't rush anything or anyone but can maybe switch phones in the meantime to my incredible or maybe just perform the hack for the free verizon 3g tethering. Thanks again for any help I rarely ask questions and try not to but I think this is one of those I just have the urge to ask.
EDIT !!! : Guess another random user in another forum on the android development side reported to use this and guess what I can now use infrastructure on my Samsung Fascinate using wifi tether app ( I tested this with my ps3 which worked flawless). I must say like I did in my other post that the 3.0 experimental one (as of this post) is still very buggy it works but each time you stop the tethering ur phone will get a message from the app saying its not working and requires a reboot ( at least for me) but hey shows that the progress for this is coming along right !! Anyways here's the link for the wifi tether 3.0 in case anyone else needs help or google searches and leads that person to this thread ! I'm using the AOKP rom for my Galaxy Nexus and using the native tethering (not verizon) built into that rom and also using a pre- build of the WiFi Tether app, I was able to tether to my TF201. The latest version of WiFi Tether does not work however, and i dont know why.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...ail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-pre113.apk&can=2&q=
that one might work, though the one i have is pre110, but i don't see that on the download list.
Look, there is a consistent theme here that has been pretty much established some days back now that explains why if works for you...
*your using a custom ROM and you have native tethering built in said ROM
So not sure it is worth a whole new thread over your success to be honest, I could have told you this would work.
I also have the Galaxy Nexus and, for whatever reason, I can't get either pre110 or pre113 to work (although pre110 worked for my Nook Color), but I can tell what does work (without a ROM that has the native tethering built in).
I got SwitchPro from the Market and am using its AndroidAP toggle as a widget on my GNex home page. Somehow, that SwitchPro toggle allows the native tethering to work without calling up the Verizon subscription page. I'm using it right now.

Nice.... but again, something different than the big tethering issue blocking ad hocs networks for tethering via an APK. Not an apples to apples comparison to those of us NOT on a custom ROM and with no native tethering.

Sent a direct email to the Barnacle dev who helped with the TF101 ad hoc issue. Nothing back.
I did hear back from the member that helped get this fixed for the TF101 with the help of the Barnacle dev. He said he would help. I looped him into what I/we have tried and even sent him some info today about my latest test using some files from the Prime's HC system dump. Just not heard back so might be slow on that front to get movement. Back in my original thread I posted last nights test and failure and why I think it failed.
Hey, I've been meaning to post this for the Dev's to look at in this section. I have tried several ICS roms and I am noticing a universal issue... The wifi tethering feature doesn't seem to work. I was hoping that, since this is up in the dev section, that someone can take a look at the issue and see if there is a fix that can be incorporated. I am running clean rom 2.0 right now and I can get the Wifi Tether working if I activate wifi THEN activate the tether, but if I just do the tether, it goes to error. I used the Kernel that comes along with the Rom so I am not sure. If someone has it working perfectly fine, please don't post "It works fine for me", maybe tell us what you did to get it fixed, or a Rom that you found works best with it.
Thanks guys!

That's not the normal behavior. Scott even mentions in his ROM release notes that tethering should be setup using the Galaxy Nexus device profile with routing fix enabled and that's all. Are you using wifi tether 3.1-beta 11? If you aren't ... try upgrading. Also, try to keep in mind that there have been improvements to the ROM since 2.0 so you may also want to think about upgrading to 2.3.
Actually, I've been using the Verizon wifi hotspot lol.... Epic fail on my side?
With the sim in my phone, I get the net on my phone.
If I put my sim into my tablet, I could get the net (if the touchpad had 3g).
But if I try to use the phone as a wifi hotspot, the carrier knows the data is being shared, and blocks it. How does it know?
Am now wondering whether any of the apps to share the connection - eg over Bluetooth - would be the same or not. Must try it out.
Find it very puzzling (until the carrier told me that I could share the data connection over a wifi hotspot on my phone... if I agreed to pay them more money)...
apologies, thought would be of interest to users, appreciate developers are above stuff like that..its why i posted in the general forum. i did search but didnt find the relevant thread. this isnt a very friendly forum for users, i have noticed a few threads that interest people being attacked.
What method are you using for mobile hotspot? Phone, ROM, app, etc.
so far only tried android's own wifi hotspot feature on htc wildfire with 2.2 froyo

I have ran into problems using wifi tethering methods with Verizon in the US. When I tried to tether, I would get a page in the browser, on the device Im trying to get connection on, of verizon saying if you want to tether, you have to pay for it. Something along those lines. If the wildfire puts out an adhoc connection, most tethering apps wont show up on the TouchPad since it does not support that type of connection. The one app I have tried successfully is PDAnet in the play store. I have installed CM7 and CM9 on my phone and both built in option works with the TouchPad without the carrier noticing. Have you ever tried installing a different ROM on your phone. I dont know whats available for your phone.
EDIT: Sorry, If you're phone only goes up to froyo, I guess CM7 and CM9 are out of the question. But there may be others.
interesting. am going to try pdanet and will let u know

Just know, you need two apps. "PdaNet Tablet" on the TouchPad and I forget the name of the app for the phone. I think it tells you on the tablet app when you start it.
EDIT: Just read you need the phone version of PdaNet or another app called Foxfi on your phone.

why do you click it and then decide to post what you have....its the general section. if you're solely interested in development then here's the link HP Touchpad Development
I'm not too sure how the carrier finds out, maybe larger number of data packets compared to data being received by the phone (regardless of desktop sites being requested).
I see that you're with Orange, and if they follow the same rules as T-mobile following their merger, then they don't fine you for going over your allowance, they just limit your usage to off peak hours....then a warning...then disconnection of your data service. Only phonecalls and texts.
I know this because I totally rinsed the allowance in 2 hours after my wifi went down and I had work related files to download.

there are many ways that mobile device is different from a pc
minutes differences in the way packets are sent/created/received/acknowledged differ from os to os, not to mention hardware
obvious one are mac addressing (easy to spoof but you can usually tell if the mac is a pc or mobile based)
User Agents as was mentioned, although this not a all defining as browser apps can spoof this
and im sure there many more, all of these create a system fingerprint that makes you different from all the other devices on the operators network

Don't you get tired of having your posts deleted for rude and insulting content? As a poster above mentioned, why don't you confine yourself to the development section? Probably because the devs won't put up with your behavior there. Please refrain yourself from posting rudely.

while i agree it was rude, this shouldn't have been posted here, it should have been posted on the general wildfire sub forum as this does not particularly pertain to any problems that have been encountered on the touchpad

to be fair it could've belonged anywhere from wildfire to touchpad to just general android Q&A.....lets just be happy he didn't post it in development. I'd be thinking just as much as to where to post it, besides a touchpad solution might differ from other tablets seeing that it is a bit "unique"
I currently use "WiFi Tether" from the google play store on my "rooted" HTC to connect my Touchpad and dont have any issues with surfing.
But as darkassin mentioned, with some plans, after a certain amount of data used, you may or may not have your service slowed down. i have encounter this with downloaded nightly ROMS...I stopped doing that till i get home and use reg WiFi.
Enjoy.
Am on classicnerds here and a number of GB and ICS ROM's on a HTC phone. Hotspot works OK with laptop and TouchPad. Had to use the APN fix to get around the carrier blocking the tethering.
Focus should be over in your phone forum.
Hi,
Just a question that I can't find an answer to anywhere, does anyone else experience the following.
When I enable tethering or wireless hotspot the other device/s that connect get internet access, but my phone has no internet access itself, so I don't get email and can't use internet reliant apps at the same time. As soon as I enable tethering/wireless hotspot the phone has no internet access.
The main reason I ask this and don't think it is meant to happen is because a friend of mine has a Galaxy SII and he can use the internet on his device whilst other devices are tethered.
Does anyone else experience this, does anyone know of a solution if it is not support to do this.
Cheers
Jon
It works on my device. What rom are you using?
If you're using CM10 or a kang of CM10 tethering doesn't work buddy....

Anyone any ideas?

Imho
I have heard of T-mobile charging extras for thetering but your situation seems different. Hopefully someone will help you otherwise try searching "T-mobile thetering" or such on your device's forum and try to make an idea of what's going on. good luck.
edited...i didn't read "UK" and directed you to the US T-mobile forum....

Hi there!
I pump an ad-hoc WiFi signal from my office PC's network adapter, which works fine with my other devices. I would like to connect my Verizon Galaxy Note 2 to this hotspot but as we all know there is no native ad-hoc support.
What would be the easiest way to accomplish this? An app similar to the WiFi manager on the Archos 101?
My phone is rooted, rom Beans 4.1.2, unlocked bootloader, w/ Perseus kernel
And I realize this question has been asked before but so far I have not searched up the right answer, plus I can't freakin' post anywhere before I get to 10 posts lol. Long time visitor but now that I actually own my own Android device rather than just working on others, I figured I'd finally make an account.
Thanks in advance for the help
3rd Party Temp Workaround
Hey Guys,
So no responses eh? Anyway obviously I wasn't about to give up on my searching, but so far I have only had success with Connectify.
Its a third party application that shares your wired internet connection with your wifi adapter and pumps the signal. Basically it does exactly what ad-hoc is for but it can be seen by Android devices.
I am using the Lite version not the Pro and it has been working fine. But don't get me wrong I STILL WANT TO ENABLE AD-HOC. I am still searching for a way to do this but in the meantime I figured I'd post this info in case anybody else is still trying to do this as I am. I Googled earlier and the second listing that came up was this Q&A thread I posted, so I figured if somebody else Googled the same thing and came to this thread I didn't want them to leave empty-handed.
So if anybody has any info on how to make ad-hoc networks visible on the Note 2 please let me know, but until then using Connectify can have you set up and saving 4G data in a few minutes.
I can't speak to using this on the note, but I used adhoc switcher from the play store on an early lenovo tablet that for some reason could only tether to a phone as adhoc. The app had a ton of settings so I am betting you could make it work in this situation.
