argh. been trying for a couple days to install the new Vegan RC1. can't get it to work. i get through everything seemingly fine. then we go to the final reboot to bring up the new rom, and it hangs at those adorable viewsonic birds for eternity. Eternity being defined in this case as: 25 minutes was the longest I let it go before trying again.
trying to use using this version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1031250
with these directions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
I tried the cm7 ROM too and it did the same thing. I have seen other folks have this problem, but one thing that seems unique to my situation is that if I follow the same steps using the 4349_downgrade ROM... it works like a charm.
what up with that?
On a positive note, I have not bricked it yet!
I have searched this forum a bunch before posting, so hopefully I am not being too much of a noobie dorko.
you need to use the nvflash files in the development section
I started looking at NVFlash to use that, but it didn't seem like it worked with the ClockWork Mod. SO I tried to figure out how to remove the Clockwork Mod and revert to original, but no luck there. If you do not have to remove CWM, are there directions to use NVFlash with CWM?
Thanks!
AHA! Progress! Got NVFlash to work. Noob mistake maybe, but I think it would help to make the guide clear. But to get into the APX mode to run the NVFlash, you hold power and volume DOWN. Not volume up for the CWM. That was my mistake. Argh! Now trying to put the ROM on....
SUCCESS!! NVFlash is what I needed! Thanks to the XDA Devs!

I have been reading around for a while now, and noticed a lot of ppl soft-brick there device and are asking devs for help. I have noticed a lot of issues revolve around people trying to hop form on ROM to another.
A very easy way to recover from any sort of brick(or issue) is to use nvFlash. Its is very easy to setup and use and I highly recommend that everyone should setup nvFlash. You can find the guide on how to set it up from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861950
I think after the update last night a lot of people will brick there devices trying to mod it, and nvFlash will help you recover. I think we can really help out the dev if we all learn how to use nvFlash, because then they wont have to ans to alot of the support issues that keep coming up, and it will free up some of there time which they can use to create newer roms that will work with the new update.
If for some reason you follow that guide and are not scussefull in setting up nvFlash, then feel free to leave me a pm and i'll help you set it up.
Good post!!
You absolutely right because most of them (especially new users) won't take time to read stuff about the new update, which will in most cases soft brick the tab when coming from a non stock rom.
So yea they all should have Nvflash setup, just in case
Great advice.
I was messing around with Vegan Ginger the other night and wound up borking my gTab. Followed the instructions in that thread and had no problem using NVFlash to get everything back to normal.
Noob here Hi!
I Actually used the NVFlash yesterday to clear up some issues i was having. it works well and was easy to use.
Some how i screwed up my copy of Clockworkmod. When ever i attempted to flash any Custom ROM it would just sit at the view sonic boot screen...Although TNTLite always flashed with no issue.
I used NVFlash to get back to defaults then updated to 3588 then Reflashed CWM. Now I am able to load Vegan
Thanks for the post i think it will be helpfull for us N00Bz

Actually, you probably didn't screw anything up. Some Gtabs have a partitioning issue (I had it) which is only corrected during nvflash. I was unable to install any ginger roms until I nvflashed. Worked like a dream after nvflash.
I am Trying to boot into Clockwork Mod and when the Birds screen comes up and the the recovery key detected in the upper left corner it gets stuck there. Is there anything I can do to get Clockwork working? Also I do not know how to NVFlash on a Macintosh Thanks
You used the wrong version of CWM. Go to my website and read. It's designed for beginners. All necessary files are available for download.
http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/clockworkmod.htm
Your website is wonderful and easy to understand and I did use the right CMW v8 with the right folder ect. I think I have it in now but I also have TNT Lite 4.4 and it boots up ok but will not reinstall the Clockwork Mod and the one that is in there I have used for a couple of weeks and it worked well. I think I need to NVFlash it but I do not have a PC I am on a Mac. Love you Site it is great.
Unfornately, I know nothing about mac. Let me contact someone who knows a mac inside out. Let see what he's got to say about it.
You are awesome!
Nvflash is not possible on a mac. There isn't even a driver for adb.
You have 2 options. Either use chloroform to knock out a friend and then use his PC or tell us exactly what you did and then we can work something out.
So, you say you have TNT lite on there. That would make it 1.1 branch. I'm guessing you tried to get the CWM for 1.2 in there before and that bricked it. You really do need to nvflash either the stock rom or the cwm v8 in there. Unless you can tell us something else...
Here is what I did I installed Rom manager and went into it and from within I was able to flash a different version of Clockwork Mod and it worked and now I just started in Clockwork. Thank you so much for your help. By the way do you recommend in stayiing with 1.1 bl or going to 1.2 and trying the newer stuff? Again I will joined your new site and will be watching close and I am going to get a pc just so I can work on my Gtab. Thanks again Tom
You also have a great sense of Humor Thanks again Tom
Mac users can use Linux running in a virtual environment (like VirtualBox) to use nvflash. No drivers required.
I'm glad you found a solution.
The most stable and smoothest rom is the calkulin+clemsyn combo. The most popular is vegan-tab ginger. Look at my list on my site for the appropriate bl.
PS - I didn't know ROM manager works now. Early on, there were people reporting some horror stories about rom manager killing their gtabs. That's why I didn't recommend it. Hm... I'll take a look at it now.
Thank you I never thought of that I have VM ware on this Mac with Windows XP so I guess I could run it on that. Thanks so Much
Hey I read some bad things as well but I was desperate and thought might as well try it and hurrah it worked
You're welcome. Goodintentions is correct in bringing up the ROM manager issue though. Flashing ROMs or CWM with ROM manager can result in APX looping that requires more than a simple nvflash to correct. I've had several people send me their tablets for recovery after having used ROM manager.
+1. Rom manager is no touchey! There are at least a few new posts a week from people borkifying there tabs from using that app. Not saying it happens every time just that it can happen. Its not worth loosing all your data because you wanted to save 5 seconds.
Glad you got it worked out. Try nvflash from from your vm next time
Hello everyone,
i just recently purchased a gtab and tried to install clockwork recovery on it. that didnt seem to work so i tried to do a factory reset. my guess is it tried to boot to CWM but the files were messed so now its stuck at "booting recovery kernel image". can someone assist me? my plan was to put cwm on it, and then put Vegan on it, but that foiled.
Thanks!

What version of CWM did you try to install? Do you know what bootloader you're on? I'd imagine that you tried flashing the 1.1 BL CWM and ended up in a softbrick because you have a 1.2 BL G-Tablet...
G-Tablet for Dummies is your friend...google it, read every page, then decide what you want to do. At the start here page, you're on a code red, I believe.
If you happened to install a wrong CWM bootloader version, you are in BIG trouble. The "stuck bird sign" is not a good sign
Last time it happened, I used code DETOX to set it straight in viewsonic gtablet for dummies.
THis thing is unbrickable (virtually unbrickable), so no worries~
I have to agree. I got my gtablet about a month ago. Nothing I did seemed to work, until I found the gtablet for dummies site. Within about two hours, I was up and running with a real android operating system with full market.
That site ROCKS!
Thank you all so much for the reply. I just got it today and knew I didnt want TnT but i guess i rushed with the process and did the wrong bootloader. Im gonna look in to that when i get home to my own PC and see what happens. Thank you!
ok. i read over the Gtablet for dummies website, and that reminded me that there must be something wrong with the install of CWM. all it does is say ANDROID in orange on the left of the screen and then a grey triangle shows up. im going to attempt to be the Triple Code Red tonight and hope that works.
Humblemuffin,
Don't give up! I totally messed up the g tablet shortly after taking it out of the box. After much research and trying various steps/techniques, I eventually was able to bring it back.
I posted the exact steps I used here on xda and on slatedroid.
They can also be found on the Viewsonic Gtablet For Dummies site under "How-To". Follow the steps exactly and I am confident you will get your g tab restored.
http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/
Same steps, but recently added some content about APX and NVFLASH

thaks for the advice. im quite grateful that theres people able to help me here. ive been reading gtablet for dummies, but i seem to be at even more of a standstill. i think my CWM is corrupt or something. after it says "Recovery Key Press Detected", it shows ANDROID in yellow/orange letters on the left of the screen for about a second, then a grey triangle with an exclamation mark pops up. i think using the wrong bootloader kind of screwd me over. i always try and rush with my technology like this. thank you!
Here is another potential solution for you to consider. It does not require the use of ADB which makes it a little easier than my steps. If it you think this one will work for you, then I would recommend doing it before mine.

Thanks for the reccomendation! I sent you a message about it and maybe we could get it up and running. My main concern now is that my CWM still doesn't work. That's kind of worrysome to me because all the potential fixes I see envolve using it at one point or another.
Blank Screen, background light
I went to GTablet for Dummies as well, to install CWM and then a new OS. Unfortunately, my GTab would not accept the installation of CWM. I have a 1.1, and tried installing the version 1.1....following the directions exactly They then suggested I install nvflash, which I tried with no success. Now, my GTab just shut down...blank screen with background light. Prior to the shut down, it had over 40% battery life left. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Well, when I first got a gtab, i messed up the bootloader (installing the wrong version of bootloader), CWM doesn't work. Etc...etc...luckily apx mode still work. This is what I do. I think it is sorta the ultimate wipe.
Edit: I wasn't allowed to put link outside since I was a new user. But you can just go to viewsonic gtablet for dummies website
USE THE CODE DETOX. The code detox invovles you nvflashing your rom with this format.zip file. It might look similar to other nvflash at first glance except when you use the format zip nvflash, you will see "magic-value -mismatch" in red color.
After you nvflashed your tab with format.zip. Do another Nvflash, but this time, Nvflash your tab with "NVFlash to Stock with CWM pre-installed" . Get the right bootloader, and follow the steps described later in viewsonic gtab for dummies, and you have a smoking gtab soon enough
Um... guys, just download my nvflash with cwm pre-installed and use that. No need to put cwm on separately.
To goodintentions, TJEvans, fury7, tidbit, djab76, SM Daly, ahandlen003, and goodintentions again.
Thank you so much. i know the task is yet to be complete, but i finally was able to get past the bootloop and in to TnT to do the OTA update. im going to be much more careful with any more modding. for the record, the NVflash with CWM pre installed for BL 1.2 was the ticket. CWM looks so beautiful after being in the pits for a few days.
if all goes to hell again, ill let you all know.
Thanks again!

Before I bought my gtab, i spents hours reading up on roebeets and others @ xda, blogspot and slate. took tons of notes. had everything laid out step by step. even had nvflash files set up. Had minimal prblems.
In the last month or two, found out about goodintentions website. he pretty much compiled everything you would need to know.
spend some time there reading up and you'll be on your way.
Probably should send him a donation also...he deserve it
I have a question I think I jump the gun on this one. I tried to install ClockWorkMod for my G tab 1.2 I got the file from GTablet for dummies but everytime I tried to install it it will just sit on the "Recovery key detected" and then it says "Booting recovery kernel image" and with the 3 birds and it just sits there! I can't get into recovery mod. either but I can turn it off and it boots fine to the homepage. What can i do? The person I bought it from had it rooted but he said he returned it back to stock rom. Thanks for the help.
Can someone help me, please.
Big Thumbs Up to Goodintentions...

If it were my Gtab, I would nvflash it back to stock myself just in case. Just pay attention to the requirements of the custom ROM you want to flash: some are for 1.1 and some for 1.2 -- nvflash accordingly. Anyway, learning and setting up nvflash is a good thing if you plan to flash custom ROMS with any regularity.

Hello, somewhat of a quick question. AFter having some installation issues I nvflashed(without installing CWM bec. I didnt know til after about it) to 1.2bl 4349 Then of course went to install CWM8-followed same exact steps and link the 1st time which worked. After extract & placing the update.zip & recovery on root, try to boot into Revovery, sticks a 3 birds screen saying "REcovery key detected BOoting recovery kernel image" From there, Im able to power off and back on to OS everytime. Just not able to see any recovery.
Tried, different links, made sure it said sdcard/not sd2 in command folder, and for other small things with no luck. Been reading similar issues, and seems the answer is to NVflash w/ CWM install??? or is there a more simple fix? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Clockworkmod 0.8 only works on the 1.1 bootloader. If you are trying to upgrade to 1.2, I would suggest you download the NVFlash for 1.2 with CWM installed. You can find it at Good Intention's website:
http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/nvflash.htm.
I did the upgrade this weekend and bricked my tablet until I found that download. It fixed it right up.
ok thanks for that...Just so you know bought the gtab few days ago, came with 1.2 4349 I did not Nvflash, just did the CWM(CWM3028.1.2internal (1).zip) install with no problems. Had some install and roms issues so I did the NVflash 1.2 without CWM with succes to just start fresh, but cant get to recovery.
Just to be clear Im not trying to upgrade 1.2, im currently already at 1.2 4349 and cant get to recovery.(can get into to OS by holding power button from the stuck 3 birds screen)
My question: Is the only way out of this to follow the the link you provided and nvflash w/ cwm??? If even this would work
Please help thank you
Back to CWM Couple more side questions please
Ok pretty sure I got it....
followed the nvflash for dummies and ran the 1.2 with CWM installed and now I can access CWM...no t sure what happened because I ran did this same thing but w/o CWM and worked fine, then tried to install the CWM 1.2 compatible by putting the 2 items on the root but it would just get stuck at 3 birds screen, although I was at least able to still get into OS from there, just not any recovery. Oh well, pretty sure I got.
See i had already had cwm(NON-Nvflash method) and Vegan tab GE 7.0.0 for 1.2bl installed. After fixing some Fc's, manually installing a browser and market since I could not find them anywhere the common market issues by removing the market updater(couldnt find a way to get new market working), and some other similar issues, I was not able to 2 solve 2 main things that had to be resolved:
~While the regular email app push notifications worked fine, the gmail app would not work. I even had to manually go into the app and hit refresh to even receive them Any knowledge with this would be a life saver
~Vegan-tab settings-i would select and it would immediate FC. Each time I would select, it would do it again Couldnt find a way to make it stop so I could access that menu.
-could get into launcher settings but not Vtab settings...shedding any light here would be great...
So this led me to do Nvflash & reflash a custom rom in hopes of things going much smoother. I hope this irons those issues out...
I hope to get some insight on the above post, thanks in advance...
BTW XDA Developers you are AWESOME and save my ass consistently, all of you are great and I thank you!!! I will be hitting that thank you button
Hi All,
I bought a gTablet a couple months ago when they were on sale on Woot!
Immediately after receiving it, I read through a bunch of posts to try and put the Flashback ROM on it. The first recommended action was to put Clockwork Mod on it. Then, I believe, to install/use NVFlash to back everything up.
I tried to install Clockwork Mod. Something went wrong and it didn't install correctly. Now when I try to boot it, holding town the volume + key, it no longer goes to the bootloader menu. I believe that functionality's hosed. Luckily (or unluckily), it still boots up into the gTablet TnT ROM.
My questions are:
1. If I hosed my bootloader menu, is there a way to restore it?
2. Are the any developments, since June, on a better process to load Flashback?
3. Have any new/better Honeycomb flavored ROM's come out that I should consider above Flashback?
Thanks in advance,
Ansel

i dont know the answer to 1. the best way to load flashback is to do option 3, followed by option 2. i have yet to read a thread where that did not work.
as far as i am aware this is the best supported rom for honeycomb on the gtab. illuminate is available, ive never tried it. gtabcomb hasnt been supported in quite a while.
my flashback 10 install is close to flawless. i had one sod when i first installed and nothing since.
