[Q] Help installing custom kernels - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would like to install and test some of the custom kernels the devs are cooking up - to play with them and to help the devs with feedback if possible. But I didn't find good instructions on how to flash them the right way. I have tried a couple of times but always end up with the regular kernels at the end, so obviously I'm doing something wrong.
Can someone point me in the right directions? Thanks!!

How-To for testing custom kernel by DooMLoRD

You need to edit your chargemon file to boot into the custom kernel. Also you can find some edited chargemon files in the custom kernel thread.

confused bout Roms n Kernels

If you chose to use one of the roms do you also have to select which kernal to use. How do you know differenencse between kernals and roms... just wanted to know if its neccessary to also change kernals. as well as roms.. thanks all
All of the roms have kernels built in, and which kernels are mostly referenced in the release notes. The kernels are available to users as well for a choice if you need something special like CIFS support or a different governor; the kernel builders will mention what is available in their kernel. It also gives us the opportunity to update the kernel without having to reflash the rom.
Best bet, read read read. The devs are pretty good at keeping up their OP notes. Never guess, or you'll quickly learn how NVFLASH works.

[HELP] zKernel 2.6.29 installation

Hi everybody!
I am very new in playing with ROMs and custom kernels, so I kindly ask your help!
I would like to try the latest fantastic zKernel 2.6.29 (link to thread HERE) on my Stock SE 2.1 ROM but I don't know very well how to perform certain operations. In particular:
1) How to check which xRecovery I have inside my phone?
2) How to move from my actual baseband (52) to the suggested one (67)?
3) Once I install the kernel through xRecovery (just choose ZIP and install right?), how to go back to the stock one in case something wrong happens?
4) Before new kernel installation, do I have to perform some cache cleaning or other similar stuff through xRecovery?
5) Other steps needed/suggested to do?
Many many thanks in advance!! And please remember I'm only a poor newbie!!
Before flashing the custom kernel, I recommend going to:

It should really help you understand what you need to do.
thanks for this!

[Q] Can I Flash SpeedMod Kernel on my SGS2

Hello
I'm new to this...
I was wondering if I can install the SpeedMod Kernel on my SGS2??
Why this Question:
When I rooted my decive with cf-root and odin I have chosen the Kernel with the same "version" my stock kernel had.
Now I'm not sure if I can install any sgs2 kernel (in this case SpeedMod) or if the "version" is important.
I think that all SGS2 Phones should have the same hardware so I sould be able to use any Kernel. Is that right?
What do I have to be aware of, when I choose a new kernel?
Thanks
Ditschi
Yes you can, don't worry about it. Versions don't care much after all.
Thanks a lot thought that. I'll flash he kernel tomorow.
But what im interested in:
When you say the version doesn't matter why are there so many versions of cf-root? Is'nt that a lot of extra work? Why not useing only one kernel?
Cheers
Ditschi
That's for people who want to stay as close as possible to stock.
The developers compile their kernel to work with any Samsung or TouchWiz based rom.
CF Root extracts the kernels from the specific rom, adds in the goodies and presents it to us for use to root the respective rom. So basically what you have is the stock kernel with root added among other things
ah ok...
That makes sense. Thanks a Lot for the help

Which ROM to use for kernel development?

Has anyone tried installing custom kernel modules on the viewpad 7? I'm likely to need to do this inthe future, and was wondering if it had any bearing on my selection of ROM. Has anyone done this for the default kernel, or will I need one I can compile myself?
Thanks!
