I want to install ubuntu on my phone but i dont want to delete all my apps etc to install and then not have enough space. Is there any way to extend the data partition?

Hi I am using Modaco Rom 3.1 with A2SD with Ext3.
I am wondering how do I go about extracting application data, such as chat logs from MSN Droid or notes from Ultramate, from the SD card? Where is application data saved on A2SD on android devices and how could I copy them to my computer? I don't want to back up the data, I just want to be able to view them on my computer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
application data is usually stored in /data/data, but could also go to the fat partition of the card (the part you see on your windows pc when you mount the usb storage) if it is larger data (for example trailmaps saves the downloaded ski area maps on the fat partition), because space in /data is limited.
you can pull it via adb pull and then examine the file, afaik these are usually sqlite databases, but that is only afaik and could vary from app to app.
Thanks kendong2 I managed to pull the data.
But out of curiosity, is this /data/data partition part of the phone's memory, or of the SD card's? I can't seem to browse it using a file manager.
And do applications store any data in the Ext3 partition of the SD card?
/data is part of the phone memory, it is readable only by root. get root explorer or any file manager that uses root and you can read it.
only apps themselves are stored on ext, no data. unless you specify it, which would require modifying the apps2sd script (kinda like "data2sd").
I've been wondering if there's a way to do a full apps2sd without making a partition on the sd card. My ace is running a stock rom. Rooted and running 2.3.5. The internal memory really sucks and I'm thinking of getting a 8GB micro sd just to store it all.
Any hints or tips?
what do u mean by "full"?
if u just search a2sd on market, many of it will allow moving app to sdcard without even creating partition. but it just move apk tho. dalvik cache and data still occupy internal memory.

I have an app called app 2 SD from the market and I don't think it does what it says. If all the apps were installed on the SD, wouldn't the internal memory be almost completely free? Or do I have a misunderstanding of apps2sd? Unless the apps2sd are different for custom roms or something?
u need to also install a2sd enabler to be able to move all apps that previously restricted by android system to only install in internal. but then most widget would be unusable if move to sdcard using that a2sd app from market. and also as i said earlier, it will only move apk. dalvik cache and data still occupy internal so it will eventually become cluttered and full again.
also i think users here if talking about a2sd, it means darktremore a2sd script. it allow moving full dalvik cache and data to sdcard without giving problem to widgets, but it needs second sdcard partition.
so to answer ur question, and if by "full" u mean full moving of dalvik cache and data to sdcard without second partition, no... theres no a2sd app that can move dalvik cache and data to sdcard without second partition. none that i can think of. darktremore a2sd script and similar variant script that can fully move dalvik cache and data to sdcard needs second partition.
the simplest way is make an ext partition using cwm recovery and use link2sd to link the apps to sd card. it also moves the dalvik cache and dex to sd. I am using link2sd and it does what it meant to
Currently I have an HTC Explorer on the stock ROM with stock kernel, and it is rooted and I use link2SD to move all my apps to my SD card. However, this method does not move the application data. I would like to install a new apps2SD script that will move app data as well as apps, as I am running out of space due to the data.
The problem I am facing is that with link2SD, I am using a FAT32 partition (my current stock kernel does not support ext partitions). Almost all my apps are on this FAT32 partition. I believe if I switch to a different script, I must use an ext partition. I think I will need to install a custom kernel that supports ext partitions (and init.d scripts?) and create a new ext partition.
My questions are these:
1. Will installing a new kernel be enough without installing a new ROM? (If so, can anyone suggest one for the Explorer that adds ext & init.d support? Preferably as few other features as possible, I'd like to stick reasonably close to stock)
2. How can I move all my existing apps from the FAT32 partition to the ext partition, and also move all the data currently on internal storage to the ext partition, without losing anything? (If I back everything up with Titanium Backup, make the switch, and then restore the backup once the script is installed, will that work? If so, do I need to do a wipe at any point?)
3. Which apps2SD script should I use? I have read about several, and have no idea which is best.
4. How do I actually make the switch? Do I uninstall link2SD, remove the FAT32 partition and replace it with an ext2 partition, install the new script in recovery, then boot up? Or would that cause problems with the remnant symlinks made by link2SD? Do I need to do a wipe at some point?
I realise I am asking a lot of questions here, at this point I am beginning to regret not going with a custom kernel and a full a2sd script in the first place. Any help would be much appreciated.
Would like to know also..
Hey guys
so whenever i need to flash new rom we need to format data and system before so i was thinking any way to format data without
losing apps
as apps are installed in data/apps and data/data
is it possible ?
i hate restoring again and again using titanium b
The whole point of formatting /data is to erase all the apps. Use TB
I have flashed MIUI and seems like they have used all the system partition. now I have deleted some apps I dont need but its not enough and it seems that there is some apps I cannot install to SD cos they wont be working, I have heard that you can somehow make some of your SD be part of the system partition.
is it really possible?
is it recommended?
