[Q] Flashing Overview - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all. My name is Brian, I'm from Florida, receiving my first Android Device (Atrix 4g) in the mail hopefully tomorrow! My phone history is: Samsung A737 (few months), Blackberry 9000 (2.5 Years).
My plan is to get knowledgeable on how to use the android software on a very basic level over this week, and I plan to flash / customize my Atrix this weekend. This is where I have some questions / seek advice:
The first step being a flash to 1.2.6 This is the step I'm the most "worried" or "unsure" about due to the fact that I've seen youtube videos performing the other steps. But I'll just download the 1.2.6 files, and follow this guide.
Once successfully flashed back to 1.2.6, I'll use GladRoot to root my phone to 1.5.7.
I'm not yet familiar with android and the capabilities, but from what I understand, once rooted, my device can load an .APK from a SD card. This is for the next step when I place Tenfar's CWM onto my SD card as a .apk and load it? Once this is done I will have an application, according to this guide, which I will run, use Install Recovery (2 times), then Recovery Boot. This will put me in some mode from which I will install the .zip file (Gingerblur / Greyblur) that I put on my SD card in the first place. "Congratulations! You’ve installed your very own Atrix 4G custom ROM!" being the desired outcome .
My questions are: Does my Atrix come on 1.2.6, so I don't even need to do the first step at all? Is rooting as simple as it seems? What is a CWM, in simple terms ? Is my phone's insurance ($5/month through at&t) voided by flashing / customizing?
I know I'm rather redundant with the guides that have been provided, its just that I want to be sure I'm not making any mistakes because I'm so naïve with the android software (lol I'm -1 days experienced right now, assuming it comes tomorrow). These guides are wonderfully created and I will surely thank some of the great developers (in a monetary manner ) at the end of my android customization. Your help is greatly appreciated in advance!

The phone should come loaded 1.2.6 so no flash is required. After you get use to it run the gladroot very simple process to do. after that update to the newest 4.1.5.7 then run the after update so then you will be rooted on the newest 4.1.5.7 after your done with that do whatever you want. I am by far no expert. I too also recently got my atrix and was scared to death to do this on my own. Just read alot and ask alot of questions. Today i finally flashed gingerblur on my phone and love it along with the webtop mod. Rooting is simple the whole process on everything is simple now with that said i havent had to flash back stop through RSD yet so i dont know about that. Flashing will void your insurance unless if you can flash it back stock. Just go in the android development section on the atrix forums and everything is usually on page 1. Best thing you can do make a folder on your desktop with all the phones drivers and any files you download and also the rsd, in my folder i also copy and pasted instructions in each folder for each process so i wouldnt have to dig in the threads to find it. Hope this helps and like i said im not expert at this.

Seems like you're on the right track don't be too scared everything you want to do has very good instructions to go with so im sure you'll do fine. One thing though that will help you and also provide more of live help is get an irc cliet and go to the #moto-atrix channel alot of the devs and knowledgeable people hang out there and are very helpful, a lot of people on there were also on the same boat you're in not too long ago so they'll help a lot
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App

Thanks guys! Got my atrix in the mail, loving every minute of it compared to that garbage Blackberry. As far as an IRC client goes, I just downloaded mIRC, thanks for the advice!

Please help with rooting the G2

I am been searching and searching for a tutorial to root my T-mobile UK hero.
Could someone help with find a straightforward guide as there seem to be soo many diffent methods which is just confusing me a bit.
about my device, Its currently running version 1.5
Rom 1.76.110.6
Also is there any easy/free way to unlock this device?
All help will be greatly appriciated.
I don't even know what a G2 is. but if it's basically a hero with a different case (the only reason I can imagine why it's lumped in with our heros), you should try my following instructions. The worst case is that it won't work in step one (the actual rooting process) in which case you'd have to get help from someone else.
Don's instructions for how to root your hero (yea, I'm Don, dkelley):
- download the one click root apk http://blog.23corner.com/tag/universalandroot/ from the official blog. (newbie points: copy it do your sd card if you didn't download it directly with your phone. checkmark "unknown sources" in settings->applications. install it using a file explorer that you can download from market for free such as "linda file manager".)
- run it, choose root for 1.5/1.6. takes half a minute. worked for me first time, but there isn't any obvious confirmation other than "done" message, so don't expect magical features popping up. It doesn't even install a superuser app or busybox... so you're still borked.... until the next step.
- download the free (old version, crappy features, but functional) superuser app from the market. install it (obviously). now you're just missing busybox. if you know how/want to bother putting it into your current rom, go for it. I didn't so I didn't.
- for sake of app backup, you can't run titanium without busybox (you already have root and superuser though, see post above if it matters that much). I downloaded the free applist tool from market to make a text file on sd card listing my installed apps. stock hero rom can't have too much installed anyway, won't take you THAT long to manually go through list and redownload/reinstall after flashing a new rom.
- install clockwork "rom manager". they say it's in market, I've never seen it. but an apk is floating around the net. it only needs root+SU which you have now. use it to download and flash a recovery rom of your choice. I use clockwork so it's an obvious choice here, but I think you can do amon-ra with this tool also, probably 1.6.x for those who don't care about dalvik wipes working properly.
- do a nandroid backup of your original rom NOW. could be really important... and this 1-click rooter can apparently UNRoot your rom too, so after a nandroid restore it might be the only way to get your phone back to stock. in my case I'm sol that way (hand-made goldcard rooting method, my phone's incapable of going stock ever again using my own skills...)
- newbie points: make sure you have a flashable signed gsm hero rom on your sd card somewhere. Reboot into recovery using "rom manager" or shutdown phone, then start it again but hold power AND home buttons without letting go until 8 to 12 seconds later you're booted into recovery. wipe everything (dalvik, cache, data, ext shouldn't matter yet from a stock rom...). "install zip file" or however they word the "flash rom" process in your recovery.
- reboot and enjoy.
I've got a t-mobile g2 and used the gold card method a while back, so can say that definitely works.
Thanks guys, I have decided to do the gold card and update it to a generic rom. Can i still get an unlock code to work? is there anyway on unlocking it?
I used a goldcard also on my phone months ago. a hero. pain in the butt to get done right... but works great.
this is why I recommended the above steps which are MUCH easier. I followed them (and organized those particular steps) and used them on my wife's hero a couple of days ago. It took me 15 minutes until I was running a new rooted rom on her phone perfectly with recovery installed, nandroid backup/restore, busybox, super user, the whole thing.
I know your phone isn't listed there - but again, downloading and running the apk won't do anything bad. it either works or doesn't, you'd know by now. it might not work but it's WAY faster and easier than a goldcard.
so imho it's worth a try for 30 seconds of your time.
if it says that it successfully roots your phone then just follow the rest of my instructions above to get everything setup how you'll need to.
goldcard works great though too - I just found it a very poorly documented experience. Hopefully it's clearer now.
when I goldcard rooted my phone I found several sets of instructions and they were all different - and not one of them worked on it's own, I had to combine bits and pieces. It was very scary LoL.
Good luck which ever route you take - hope you get a nice froyo rom running soon!
Hboot stuck
Hi I try to flash my G2 to generic RUU I did goldcard with success and I was doing upgrade trought RUU everything works great but then it says RADIO_V2 - FAIL PU.
Now when I try to turn on my G2 I get hboot screen and I can do anything
can somebody help me?
Thank You

The G2 is T-Mobile UK's version of the Hero, and as far as I know they have locked it down so tight that the only way of Rooting it regardless of what ROM it has(1.5, 1.5 update 1, 2.1 e.t.c), has always only been the goldcard method.
You have to use the goldcard method, I tried the other one when I was rooting my G2 and it didn't work.
I used this guide - BTDags guide, can't post a link though.
Google 'Complete Newbie Guide Hero' Its the first link.
I used the Goldcard to root my T-mob G2. I think I used this guide: Jesterz' guide It is a bit of a pain but you only have to do it once.

[Q] HTC Eris Rom Flash NOOBIE

First off, thanks for taking the time to read my post. I have been trying to root/flash rom since yesterday at 11am now 2:19pm a day later. So before whinning here, I did do my research. Flash is now done, *sigh*
I would like the froyo tazzv26 or 28 rom flashed on my Eris
I've watched yourtube how to videos, unlockr videos, several adroidforums how to posts. they all revert me back here.
My issue is this #1:most of those are old posts(which I've read and been reverted to), and obvious upgrades have been made therefore what thier videos/posts show are not what I'm seeing or reading . Being that this is new to me I feel lost and confused.
Issue#2 I found the rom I wanted, here when I searched Roms for Eris however a link that is next to it sends me to another and another page. Very frustrating.
Favor needed: I've never done this before so can someone please help walk me through the process of being on the ACTUAL page with the download link, and what happens from then. Then let me know what i'm supposed to be seeing on my computer screen once the process starts .** WOW this part is massively missing from all noobie post/videos= FYI for admins and moderators
FYI Eris is already rooted wth 4zroot (instead of HTC1 click since the power up and power button thing didn't work 4 times) I have superuser, quickboot, rom manager, and astro file manager all installed and ready to go.
I'm ready to take your lead
Dulce,
Saw your post over on AF and replied over there, but did really get the gist of your needs until I saw this thread over here on XDA.
Rooting with Z4 root does indeed root you, but this will not allow you to flash or install a custom ROM without having replaced your stock recovery with a custom one, the "one" being Amon_RA (stay away from ClockworkMod at this time for the Eris...the details are probably more than you want or need to know at this time).
The 1-click method that you mentioned previously is what you want and it will install Amon_RA's custom recovery for you.
I would highly advised you to read and understand this thread over on AndroidForums: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html
You will learn what you need to know from that thread and it will also show you how to install the very same custom recovery as the 1-click method/app. It is clearly more verbose, but the trade-off / benefit is that you will have the best instruction possible regarding rooting your Eris.
Check it out and good luck!
Cheers!

[Q] Broke army Dad needs step by step help!

Im new here, and after watching the newb video, and looking around I have started to get my knowledge base up. I cannot afford to brick my phone as I am completely broke and this phone will be my only contact back home when I deploy.
I have a streak 5 running 2.2 on the Rogers network in Canada. (screen broke so they are sending me a new one and it arrives with 1.6).
I have a wish to root my phone so I can get rid of useless programs that rogers has put on my phone.
I need to know if there is a fool proof way to create a back up so if I have to send this one back too, Rogers wont know that I rooted it.
I am truly sorry if someone has already posted an answer for this, I have a 2 year old to catch and I have hardly any computer time.
I also have questions about custom ROMs but I havent done all my research yet
Thanks guys!
[REF]Everything you wanted to know about the streak, but were too busy bricking it
Update using the built in updater, then you can install streakmod which is a custom recovery
By update, do you mean to use the OTA upgrade to 2.2 offered from rogers?
Yes, start from there
ilikemygooglephone(dot)com/2010/10/09/step-by-step-clockworkmod-recovery-on-dell-streak-for-windows-mac-linux-andorid-2-12-2/ in here it says to root your phone before. can i install streakmod before i root?
If you need to root, install streakmod then superuser.zip
Stay away from custom ROM's, at the end of the day they're not worth the trouble IMO. People will disagree with me, but most of them have probably spent at least 8-10 hours messing with them. Stick with 354 or 351 for stability and reliability.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
is there a location that I can find a step by step process for COMPLETE NEWBS? I have not been able to find out how streakmod or clockwork mod install/work. I need to know how I can install one of these programs and how to restore a phone. If my phone is destroyed I need to be able to buy a new one and restore my old phone onto it.
Try starting here
And this guide is good.
You only need Streakmod if you are planning to flash a custom rom, otherwise just flash the latest 351/354/360 rom and recovery.

[Q] Install Alien on AT&T 2.3.6

i was originally on at&t 2.3.6 firmware, after rooted it and unlock the bootloader i decided to install the "DarkSide" rom on prefinal version and it worked fine (minor bugs), but my question is that if i decide to install the latest version of alien (which i have heard the version in minor of 2.3.6), could cause me any kind of brick???
i am really new on all of this and i don't want to screw anything
Thanks in Advance.
If you've unlocked the bootloader, it shouldn't have a problem. I say shouldn't because there's always a small chance that something can happen. But to be honest, bricks usually happen when users don't follow instructions or read warnings, at least in my experience.
First rule of thumb when end user hacking or softmodding any device, be it a game system or phone, always read instructions all the way through before and during the process. This will minimize the chance of bricking.
If you're not comfortable with taking the risk, then maybe you shouldn't have unlocked the bootloader. I just hope that you realize your phone's warranty is shot, and there's no going back.
Sorry, I'm not trying to sound rude. I just want you to realize that if it bricks, you're responsible, and nobody else is. But it shouldn't brick if you follow directions carefully, and make sure you're installing the correct version, be it Bell or AT&T. Also make sure, in general for any rom, that you don't install a version with high-performance mods, like overclocking to 1.45ghz. This is not to be done lightly, as it can lead to burning up your phone, if not taken care of properly. Again, read warnings.
It is recommended to perform a backup of apps, contacts, SMS or whatever before doing anything. This can help when testing a new rom, as there may be something you end up not liking about the rom, and redoing the whole setup process can get tiring. I recommend TiBu (Titanium Backup) for apps and Super Backup for SMS, contacts, and Call logs. These are available in the market, and they work across different roms. TiBu Pro costs about $5 though, but it's the second best $5 spent on the market, next to PowerAmp. ( ) It will be invaluable to you. The free version does not support batch restore (and backup I think, batch means multiples at a time)
I wish you luck, and I hope this helps. If you skipped parts of this (I understand why, loooong), I warned you.
Take care,
Drakonas
So, if i wanted to install Alien or NottachTrix1.2.5 rom is nesesary that i need to get back to 2.3.6 at&t stock firmware???, i am currently on darkside rom, my atrix was rooted and unlocked when i was on 2.3.6 new version of at&t
I really want to test Alien or NottachTrix rom, Any help would be truly appreciated
this is a bit off but could you link me to the directions you used to unlock the BL for 2.3.6? >.<

Sorry about the late answer
I just follow this video
well, i can not post a link because i have less than 8 messages but the exact name on youtube is "How to Unlock the Bootloader for Atrix 4G Running GB 2.3.4 and 2.3.6 4.5.141"
i know that it says that is for atrix at&t 2.3.4 but it worked for my virgin atrix 2.3.6 at&t, i recomend to watch the video 3-5 times before trying, just follow step by step very carefully and when in your phone says that:
"Failed to boot, error 0x1000"
"No OS found"
i just restarted the same program but in option 3, it will automatically follow the next step
Remember, this is not a guide of any kind, just sharing my personal experience, this is what i used
Virgin Atrix 4G AT&T 2.3.6 4.5.141 firmware
Windows 7 64-bits
and the software that is on the video, please tell me how it goes for you, remember ask all your questions before doing it

I messed up

Hi, I am new here, but have recently gotten into rooting phones etc, but my knowledge base is still Novice at best. I have an AT&T Optimus G that was rooted and had CWM, Free G and Kitkat. Long story short, a co-worker who claimed to know what they were doing has reset my phone, wiped my external sd card and totally factory reset my phone. When I turn it on now ClockworkMod Recovery comes on, but all of my back ups etc have been wiped. I am assuming that it is now just a machine with no info on it. What do I do now? I'm sure that the answer to this will be very involved so if anyone could possibly suggest a thread to read or somewhere to start I would greatly appreciate it. I'm sorry for the inconvenience guys...
The google account that this was linked to is my current one so no issues with reset protection once it gets running or what not. Any info I can provide on my end if need be feel free to let me know. I know one of the specifics to the device was: geefhd???
Here is the current update: Android 4.4.2 KitKat

Since your phone has been wiped, you are going to have to re-install your ROM either via LGNPST, which will return your phone to stock, or you will need to install your favorite custom ROM via adb sideload.
If going back to stock via LGNPST refer to FAQ Number 3 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2006946
If installing custom rom via ADB Sideload refer here http://www.droidviews.com/sideload-roms-mods-using-adb-sideload/

I was able to fix the problem late the night of this post, but I REALLY DO APPRECIATE the advice.
I had to reinstall the firmware ultimately. I did learn the commands and process for the sideload, so that was cool, and the program zips did show as downloading from 0-100% and attempted to install, but the 4g part of "this device is geef4g" was an error that I was unable to surmount. I attempted to install the madmack version of TWRP to no avail. I am lucky I figured out the tool ONLY by accidentally stumbling over the advice referencing turning back the clock on the pc.
Moving Forward...
Ok... Had to at least stop in and say thank you for the response and post the conclusion to the handful of people that stopped and looked at the thread and at the least not be one of the members that pops on to fix their device and lurks around until they need help to post again. I wouldn't be back to stock with my Optimus if others did that. I do apologize that I was able to find onsite and unable to do it at the time of the threads origin. I wont re-post links, FlashTool the fix was figuring out the right order to go in with the drivers and eventually flashing the stock AT&T firmware with the LG FlashTool. I kept on getting an error when placing the dll file and the tot in to the Tool and it was total mental error on my part when "organizing" everything beforehand. It did require me to wipe my pc back down to Windows 8.1 simply because this is all new to me and I had files EVERYWHERE from rooting every thing I can get my hands on recently. I'm having fun, but this Optimus is my heart for some reason. Originally I had her rooted with Towelroot (I believe), it could of been the LG one click flash thing that I grabbed from here, and I remember Freegee and KitKat recovery being part of the process, but I attempted to install TWRP (personal preference for me from messing with a Kindle Fire for weeks installing CM) but during reboot always went back to CWM 6.0.2.1 (or similiar). Ultimately CM was the goal on this device but was never possible, for me at least, due to my device being "geef4g" yada yada. I think I have read the fix for this in another post, so I will re study up on all that again if need by, but I wanted to pose this question simply because the "Mystique" of successfully installing CM has passed, and while I love the interface and style of that ROM, I kinda liked AndroidArea51 Rom and another ROM whose name escapes me at the moment that I put on some OLD LG phones that I practiced on in the beginning. So this is my goal. I would love it if one or two of you guys would take the time to look at what I want to accomplish and point me in the right direction as far as the procedure and order I should install these modifications to this device and if you have preferences I would love to hear them. I will look up the threads on how to do everything, so I'm not asking for an easy way out of hitting the search box, but I am WAY behind you guys as far as skill set and knowledge base is concerned and trial and error is not the method I wanted to use on this particular machine. If I need to begin a new thread or if a MOD wants/requires me to rename this thread or move it I understand. Stand by for what my goal is ultimately......
OBJECTIVE
AT&T Optimus Pro G (will HOPEFULLY be accepted by StraightTalk and used on their network or whatnot)
I ran the IMEI through their BYOD tool and it was accepted initially a week or so ago while "rooted", so I am assuming that since it is mine from another network they wont sweat me. HOWEVER, if they are going to send any code or require me to allow them modifications during the activation process that is going to in anyway alter my device down to the castrated ST standard they sell, I will have to weigh finances and options again. I realize that Tethering will be frowned upon, traceable, and grounds for termination in either case, but the subject of Mobile Hotspots is what brought me to you guys here in the first place. It irks me.
In my original "build" of this phone I attempted to dabble in "Over-Clocking" with Kernel Booster and Kernel Auditor. I didn't have a f******* clue what any of that $hiT meant. If the app's pretty much optimized it I did so for SPEED rather than battery. I don't know why, I want this thing to FLY in a noticeable fashion for performance and so that I can whip it out and show my family and friends just what the hell it is that I am accomplishing.
1. Optimize it for speed, but I would like the eventual permanent ROM to be stable PERIOD. Whether I customize the Kernel and then place the ROM, or build the ROM and then mess with the Kernel is a hurdle that I don't understand how to approach really, so when you guys talk about it I just think it sounds cool. I am assuming that "Xposed" is something I should maybe begin studying? Build props through ES File Explorer has peaked my interest as well. Long story short, if CM is what you guys suggest I install, I dont want to Optimize the hell out of the stock only to have all of it be replaced when the custom ROM is flashed. I hope that makes sense.
2. I want to optimize the range on my WIFI and every other manner of device communication without losing security. I have numerous friends that are very generous with their personal accounts that allow me to randomly log in to strangers spots (EX. Xfinity accouts), in order to truly connect to it, I have to sit outside in the yard like a weirdo at 3am with my phone in my backyard, much to the disgust of every dog in the neighborhood. I dont want to be that guy. Honestly, I am really curious in learning how to access the internet and/or any other data networks that are out there with out using these major carriers at all. I feel like there is a lot more out there than the average person is aware of. Maybe they are super low key because they are owned by the upper rich 1% or the military etc etc, but if other networks exist that facilitate the same communications that us peasants pay $100/month to access I want in on it.
3. Optimize the picture, color and clarity of the screen for any and everything being shown on it, optimize the Audio with a good "Music Player"(currently what I use) which I generally heard through head phones and when in the car pushed to that system via FM signal. I currently have over 1000 tracks, discovering a cost efficient way of adding to that Library would be wonderful (ie: spend $0), but I have been out of the music file sharing game for a while so I dont know if this is realistic. Optimizing my camera to take the best shots possible on this phone. I generally shoot nature shots, sunsets, sunrises.... unsuspecting women in doggy, the usual... I will not be loading movies and super large files. I am a NAZI with my storage. If I could expand upon the internal or external factory specs that would be great. In other words, real life applications... I haven't been a gamer for decades so nothing crazy, but this device's beautiful picture is what I fell in love with.
4. A kick ass ROM UI that is eye catching and user friendly... sorry so long winded. Got to go run calls at work now....
