My Galaxy Note (Bell) has a loose micro USB port. It can charge from the wall and is recognized by my pc however I need to prop it up on a slant in order for it to maintain pressure on the cable input, otherwise it will disconnect. It was caused by my dog knocking it off an end table while charging. It's a pain and Samsung has sent me a UPS slip to send it away.
The phone is rooted and this is my first experience with an Android. I've had a good time loading Da_G's kernel, figuring out adb, cwm, dagr8's Saurom and all the rest. However its time to send it back and I really don't know what Samsungs procedures are for a rooted phone. I've loaded the Bell kernel back to the phone but it's not the 100% solution I was looking for so I got frustrated and just went back to where I was already at with Saurom rc4 loaded up and titanium backup now doing it's thing.
Anyone with previous experiences send back a rooted phone for a hardware issue and know their policies?
Is there a step after flashing the bell kernel tar I'm missing?
Thanks

I had to send my Captivate to Samsung for repair. it was rooted and they fixed it without any issues.
Most manufacturers will fix hardware issues clearly not caused by rooting. Of course, no promises.
That's the reassurance I needed. I'll get on with it and send it away tomorrow. I'll report back in a very long 2 weeks...

Best luck.... if you were in America you could just take it to an att store. Just be on a stockish rom and turn it in and they would not notice lol, get another device that day. Idk how things go up in Canada though.
Dont Do It!!!!
I dont know WHY there are people here sending the OP off....EVERYONE KNOWS that if you root it voids your warranty...it doesnt say "It voids your warranty except for hardware issues"
Why set yourself up to be disappointed when you can just revert it back to stock and not worry at all.....people always trying to catch a fool slipping....question is who will be the fool in this scenario????

Well he should revert back to stock for sure but you can't roll back the counter. But as long as your stock they may not look at the counter and just fix the phone. It's been said before, there's no known case of Samsung voiding a warranty because of it.
Dont know how they do it up there but down here on AT&T we have a 30 day return/exchange policy I exercised yesterday in fact, plus a year warranty giving us refurbished phones if anything happens. I know you guys got it a little before us but I would check into this. Go back to stock there's a thread on how to do this in our development section and take it into your local providers store see what happens maybe you'll get lucky and they'll replace it on the spot. Say it was a hardware defect though.

Because in everyone's experience they'll generally fix hardware problems even if you're rooted. Of course they have to, but they tend to. We all said there were no guarantees.

It seems like one does not simply revert back to stock. Admittedly I'm new to this but all I can find in the development forum is the Bell kernel. The full bell system doesn't seem to be up, just the At&T. After a factory reset and old kernal I still have super user loaded and all of the bell bloatware gone. I'm sure with some due diligence I could have made a back up right after my original root but I didn't. Frustrated with the mess I created I just set the phone back up with Saurom the way I liked it.

It's only 14 days here. I've had it since launch on Feb 14th. Bell is synonymous for passing the buck off, contact them online and they tell you to call in, call them and they tell you go into a store, go to a store and they'll tell you to go to the original store of purchase or another another store with a repair tech on duty. Going directly through Samsung has been smooth thus far, I just hope if they have an issue they'll contact me before blowing whistles and charging my bill some erroneous fees.
Great. I, like a dumbass, decided to try and root my new phone without a backup plan. I have had no luck using the XDA video, and now I'm stuck with the "Please select recovery mode in Kies" screen. Kies doesn't recognize it, and I have no way to restore the stock ROM. Is my only option to wait until a stock firmware ROM is released, like it was for sprint?
Based on the information we're currently provided with, I think it'd be safe to say you're screwed for now. Why you would even try to root a device that doesn't currently have any rooting methods is beyond me. You should definitely read up before you try anything you're not sure of.
The only other option you'd have at this point is taking the phone into Verizon, showing them the screen and telling them that this is how it has looked since it came out of the box. Although it's a lie, and you bricked it out of your own neglect, the reps can't really turn you away.
Can you return it?

I did some research, and nobody had any negative things to say about the rooting process, especially with all the videos and forums on it. I searched for how to root the Samsung note 2, versus the model number, which is different for different carriers.

Every carrier is different. You must be new here.
I am new. I have rooted phones before, but never had this problem. Would it be an option to install a custom rom like Cyanogen until there is a public release of the stock firmware?

You will need to wait until the boot loader is unlocked to flash a rom, only way I can think of.

At this point in time, you can't flash anything, you can't root, and there are no recovery images to return to stock with. You either have to wait it out, or try to exchange it at Verizon.
You can exchange, they will not know the difference

Just take it to Verizon play dumb and get it replaced. It's within the 14 days so it will be swapped on the spot. They wont/don't care what's wrong with it.
The suggestion of just return it to the store, they won't notice, is a really **** move and I'm not saying that in defense of Verizon. I'm saying it that it is things like that that in the end cause more harm to the end user than good. They up costs and add charges, create obscene policies, etc. It may not negatively impact you immediately, but when multiple people do this all over the country it adds up.

Check the development section. There is a leaked ODIN .tar file that you can flash. It is a prerelease, but at least you will have a functioning phone until a proper root/unlock solution is found.

This Odin file fails. It will not flash. Someone was trying to flash it last night with the same screen you are on.
just odin the stock image in the dev section and you will be back up and running...do not I repeat do not anybody try any root methods for the other gn2 variants!

if it fails then your screwed until the latest odin image is release, which im sure wont be too long.

I'm not saying that everyone should go flash happy, attempt to root without knowing what they are doing destroy their phones and take them back to Verizon then rinse and repeat the process. But there have to be a few that are a tempting to get root for everyone else there is bound to be some hard bricks. Should they be out 700, and that's kinda harsh.
Check out this link for a fixed brick....

But with a little reading in the correct forum, people could avoid owning a $700 paperweight. It's really not that difficult, and any issues that arise from lack of research are due to their own ignorance. I can't feel sympathy for anyone who flashes blindly.

After scouring for two days I am just giving up and asking for help. Here is what happened. I have a At&t Galaxy Note. It was rooted but very glitchy. Kept shutting off, weird lines going through the screen, my camera didnt work. I know for that process I did TWRP and cyanogenmod. I went back to att stock from a forum found here. After I did that I had no google apps anywhere. SO my brother found some gapps.zip thing. He put it on my phone after I had restored back to a previous version that did have them. Now my phone wont stay on for longer than a minute. I cant get it to recognize on my computer. So I cant even try to get into it to see if I can fix anything. Everytime I conntect it, a message pops up that says that it cannot install MTP... Even if I restore again, as I have tried. It is still not letting me use it. Then my brother decided to re root it I guess. And that is all well and fine but i still cant use my phone. I saw something about a .zip that removes gapps but I havent been able to use that as my phone just wont install it in recovery mode. Can someone please please help me!!!!

wow. the first few sentences were making sense, then you just lost it grammar wise and lost me. it would have helped knowing what ROM was on your phone. from symptoms it sounds as if t was a 4.2 ROM with no GAPPS and some serious OC/UV issues.
but you lost me with your English and the "TWRP and CYANOGENMOD thingy" i know what they are obviously, but what you did with them is a HUGE guessing game. one person not knowing what they are doing is bad enough, but two of you.......... cant do that man. kind of like masturbating with someone elses hand man. who cleans up the mess.
absolute clean slate is going to be you best option in my opinion. the "Super Everything Thread" is going to be your new best friend.
read it, live it, learn it......................understand it. put yourself in position to help yourself first.
tutorals on YOUTUBE can help too.
can you get DOWNLOAD MODE?
do you have ODIN?
do you have PDA/ TAR files you need?
you may need to re-install the DRIVERS for phone on computer
there is a glossary in Super thread, that is why i capped these words. key points and things you need to do. its a marathon not a sprint.
go slow, one step at time, understand what you are doing. even rehearse it, i did. be confident in what you are doing. make sure you have files for I717.
read the OP's for ROM's
some need GAPPS (4.2) and some don't (4.1.2) or Touchwiz
the new 4.3 will also need GAPPS and there are 4.2 and 4.3 GAPPS. again make sure you have right files. all the more reason to take your time.
and uh, don't just let someone flash whatever on your phone, that's how you get a BRICK.
good luck and let us know.
if i have stated anything wrong, someone else will be buy to correct.
nothing wrong with how i am telling, others just may have shortcuts.
what you do with it is up to you, i just like to understand what i am doing, cause i will have to fix it.
but keep us posted

Im sorry, Im just really frustrated. My phone was working fine yesterday and now its a very expensive paperweight. And not only that but Im having problems with my laptop. Apparently the hard drive just went clonkers for no reason and now I have to put in a new one. Yes I can get into download mode. Yes I have Odin. Yes I have the PDA/TAR files. I made sure everything was for the sgh i717. I read each process ten times before I did it. I installed my drivers from the Samsung website. I think my problem is that the internal sd card isnt being recognized. When I go into recovery mode, which is CMW btw, it gives me an eemc 07 error message and says it cant mount. When I can get my phone to stay on long enough for thecpu to recognize it it doesnt say sd card just phone memory. I will be sure to read the super everything thread. As for a ROM there isnt one on here. If I try to put one one it wont install and keeps saying that eemc 07 error message. Thanks for responding. Im spiraling in self-pity right now but im determined to get my phone back.
If you get it back to stock, do a complete erase/format, and your still having all these glitches, there's a good chance there's hardware issues. Especially if your not able to see the external SD card etc.
If your the original owner (I.E. you got it from a dealer with a plan), and you can get your counter reset to 0 on stock with these issues still showing up, it might be easiest to take it in and get a replacement. That is, if you have a warranty option available.

Its not the external sd but the internal one. Its just gone... I know that this is the problem at this point. But I have no idea how to resolve that issue. I have no idea where it is or how to get it back. I have been on xda and droidforums for an extreme amount of time trying to find a solution but nothing going. The only way I have seen to reset my counter is to use triangle away. As I cannot even use my phone due to freezing and restarting I cannot even install that app. I am hoping that one person in the wide world has had this problem and fixed it and will read this and tell me how to fix it.

you know, something going wrong with mine was my biggest worry. when I decide to screw something up, I can really screw something up. so I was very hesitant. it probably took me 2-3 months to get the courage to flash. but that was most likely a good thing. it made me be very thorough in the process.
all I am saying is don't let it completely discourage you. you have time.
glad you got phone back, I know it can be a bit of a scary thing. I have come across an issue or two myself and actually surprised myself by fixing myself. actually a pretty good feeling.

This was originally a post about how i stumbled on a problem Chainfire 3D causes which ends up soft bricking your phone. I got a replacement phone from verizon through my warranty and it came with MDK build on it. Apparently its not a good thing to figure out loopholes in the system and share them so ive changed this post to warn people about installing the drivers from the Chainfire 3D app.
Doing a factory reset doesnt wipe root. The root binaries are in system and a FDR only hits data partitions. People doing this is also why insurance deductibles are going up and caps put on how many claims you can file.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
Here goes more people frauding the system, people like you that make insurance claimed raise prices, just deal with what you have. We all want to be flashing yes but is this is what we are ultimately going to be doing for now on on new flagship devices? It's one of the reasons they actually lock bootloaders because if it were unlocked there will be even more cries about bricks and people attempting stuff without researching, we can all argue back and forth about all that but seriously guys? Breaking your phone on purpose, obsurd.

Even if root isnt wiped during a factory reset they wouldnt see that. I would assume that once they try to boot the phone and it doesnt work theyll just use whatever software they use to set it back to stock and get it ready to send out to some other person. Im not saying this is the best idea. I just happened to stumble upon it and once i had an excuse to get a replacement i went for it. Obviously i very well could have used the stock tar file floating around and fixed it but i hate TouchWiz and the stupid features that came with the phone. I honestly doubt this is why insurance deductibles are going up considering i didnt use my insurance to get my phone replaced. it fell under the manufacturers warranty. if i wanted insurance to replace the phone i could have just dropped it "on accident".

Didnt hate it until after i had used it. I had planned on putting a custom rom on the phone as soon as i had gotten it. Ive seen how much faster the GS4 performs when its running a pure android rom. My phone is at least twice as fast now that ive switched from the stock rom to an AOSP based rom. i know it doesnt really mean anything but i also scored almost 2000 points higher on my Antutu benchmark test.

If Verizon would just unlock everything people wouldn't have to accidentally break their phones. I personally bought the phone outright to keep my unlimited data I feel that since I did that I should be able to do what ever I want to MY PHONE! ! ! Plus I pay every month for my insurance and in doing so the insurance company takes the risk that something might happen to my phone to where they have to replace it and if nothing happens to my phone well that make out like bandits because I'm still paying each month for their insurance that I don't use.

Plus I pay every month for my insurance and in doing so the insurance company takes the risk that something might happen to my phone to where they have to replace it and if nothing happens to my phone well that make out like bandits because I'm still paying each month for their insurance that I don't use.

I agree with you there. What i do with my phone is my business exspecially since i payed for the phone outright instead of getting it through an upgrade for free and i also pay for insurance. I didnt figure out how to break my phone then break it. i just figured out one thing on accident and decided not to fix it on my own (which i could have done very easily). The phone also had several issues right out of the box that would never seem to happen when id go into verizon. All the negative feedback to my post has forced me to change it to a warning about chainfire 3D. but that wont stop someone from figuring out they can get their phone replaced this way, but im also not forcing anyone to do this, its your phone do what you want with it.
Wtf is this thread all about? Warranty fraud isn't cool.
Lets not start a debate judging others morality/immorality or ethical/unethical decisions. This is so subjective, we might as well start arguing about whether there is a god or start debating about when the age of viability is for a fetus. Just keep your opinion to yourself, I don't care if you want to screw the system or not, theres not right or wrong in the grey area. Just dont be annoying about it like the people who knock on my door trying to convince me to join their religion, preaching they carry "the message of god". Like I tell them, then sing a prayer about it instead of annoying me, god damnit. This should be locked, the entire thread is a logical fallacy.

Agree, this thread should be locked.
Users who think XDA is a site to perpetuate fraud are mistaken...To ask for help recovering from a bricked device is fine, you all should be fully aware of the chances you take when you came here, using fraudulent recovery maneuvers is not how we do things...be adult about your mistakes, claim accountability on your own and pay up.
And, for those who are offended about this, thanks, but instead of replying, next time just report the thread and a moderator will handle from there. Thanks

So I finally HAVE to replace my Note 2 via warranty. Power button sticks and will not boot.
At the end of the call to place the warranty order she says "any physical damage, water damage, or software alterations will result in a charge of $290". So I'm rooted and ROM'd and would normally just return to stock. BUT since the phone will not boot, I cannot do this. I realize if it won't boot for me it likely won't boot for Verizon.
My worry is that somehow they will in get it to boot. Do they still check for root? If so is this something I should be worried about? I cannot for the life of me get this thing to turn on it seems like I will not be able to return this to stock with out powering the phone on. Any insight is greatly appreciated.
I have done the warranty replacement game for a long time. Typical the people checking the phone are stupid and dump for checking for root. I havent spoken to or talked to one smart person that would check. Plus the people they hired to make sure the devices comes in probably isn't tech savvy. Just a worker trying to get paid.

I agree with the above. I guarantee you the people who do the initial evaluation have a 'target' for the number of phones processed. But just the same return your phone to as stock looking as possible. Restore the launcher, use a stock wallpaper and/or boot-ani. Uninstall all apps you got from the store. And run your battery all the way down. It will continue to discharge even though it's off. This means it will need to charge for a few minutes before it will boot again.
And I've never noticed many posts (i can't recall even one) about phones being kicked back for being rooted/flashed.
But with that said isn't there some kind of flash 'counter' on the Note 2?

When I had my DROID X I went into a Verizon store to upgrade to an s3 and the guy who just got done telling me how he "mods" his gnex looked at my X and it was running cm7 themed out the wazoo and he said how plain the stock os is on the Motorola. Haha. So I don't think that 98% of the people who are either in store or at the warranty place have a clue what rooted is let alone able to tell if it is or not.

I think I read somewhere that you can make a powered usb jig the will boot it into download mode. I might be wrong, but you can search around for it.

Yea I can't even get the phone to boot. Which I believe is due to the malfunctioning power button. But I'm still concerned verizon will find some way to get it booted. I'm going to see if I can boot via ADB this evening. Its been quite a while since messing around with ADB so I need to allow myself some time. Hopefully I can boot it and just Odin the factory image via ADB.
I should also try and clear the flash counter right? Does anyone have any tips or know-how on how to do that? I saw somewhere that there is an app. But should that be run before or after running the Odin stock image?
Thanks again guys and gals.
Hey gerg, the app is triangle away, and I would always try to return to stock if possible. I would use it before returning to stock as it needs root privileges. What a great learning experience (better to look at it that way then get angry trying to accomplish your goal). Keep us posted as we are all"rooting" for you....

Thanks man. Appreciate the positive vibes.
However it seems like I'm stuck. I can't for the life of me get this phone to boot, therefore I can restore the stock image via ADB, because ADB will not recognize the device since it is off. I've tried every trick out there, including the youtube video about pulling the charger and pulling/re-seating the battery as fast as possible. No dice.
I did however receive my warranty device today, and since I have ADB all set up and ready to go, I'll be rooting her and getting back to Trans-Neb ASAP, and of course I'll see you back in that thread.
Again, thanks for the help guys it is appreciated. I'm fairly sure I've tried harder and spent more time to get this phone to boot than Verizon will ( I hope at least). So if they can't get it to turn on, I don't see how they can tell its rooted
