what is the difference between a rom and the kernel? Isn't the kernel in the rom? what exactly does it mean when people talk about the custom kernels etc?
Below is a great link to a forum that explains both.

Follow the instructions flash is either via Odin or CWM .
Is it going to brick my phone?
Not if its the correct kernel .

How to know which kernel is correct?
As of now I am using Sensation rom which has Siyah kernel 2.5.2 and I want to flash speedmod kernel or N.E.A.K. Kernel,
N.E.A.K. Kernel only supports sammy roms
I tried to search but I could not find out if Sensation rom is aosp or sammy do you have any idea of it?
also does speedmod kernel support both as nothing it written about it on its thread
Thanks

Normally on the first page of a rom thread you will get a description what is the rom. For example MIUI is well MIUI. Hyperdroid is sammy deodex rom with of course modifications and tweaks in the build to make it better than stock.
Sensation rom is sammy deodex no aosp nothing like that. And when you normally look for an AOSP rom it normally would say it in the heading of the thread anyway.
On the kernel thread it has a guide of what roms the kernel works on and which ones it does not. Siyah works basically with any rom. CM7 to AOSP to sammy deodex. Regarding Simone's kernel which is the NEAK version or something like that it is based on only sammy stock deodex roms and that is mainly the ones in original development and android..just look out for deodex, sammy and stock rom
AS above its all a question of reading the info on the first page of the kernel post .
Plus if it does not work flash another one .
the Neak kernel should be ok been on mine for a few days .
Speedmod likewise ok have used it before .

Thanks everyone for their wonderful help!
I have got one last question
Speedmod kernel says "it is only for Samsung Gingerbread ROMs. It will not work with CyanogenMod or MIUI ROMS!"
does this means it will not work with sensation rom?
Edit: ok looks like the different versions are just the updated ones
But still the question is if it supports sensation rom?

Now, if you look at the VERY FIRST page for SensatioN ROM,, it says:
SensatioN ROM Features:
-Based on Samsung Firmware XWKK5 Android 2.3.6
With all of this information, you should be able to deduce that the Speedmod kernel WILL work with your ROM. If you still don't understand, I'm going to suggest you don't flash anything to your phone, for fear of ending up with a paperweight.
Ok this time I understand everything
I didn't knew that Sammy roms means that the ROM is based on Samsung's stock ROM
Also I thought that speedmod only works on stock ROM so all this things got me confused
But anyways now its all clear

I don't think the kernel source for ICS is out yet! And (almost) all the GB kernels are incompatible with ICS ROMs.
simple answer no..the closest you will get to a custom kernel for ICS is here

wanna go for custom ROM i heard wanamlite and litening ROMS are best could you please guide me to install custom ROM and which ROM is best.
thanks in advance.
Check out this thead from the same forum you've just started your thread in
1) There is no best rom. Try bunch of roms out until you find one you like.
2) How to flash a rom ? Read the Stickies or follow the instructions for flashing a particular rom.
How is this urgent?
Do us all a favour and make like a tree.

I've never used either nor looked in their threads, but I'm positive there'll be instructions telling you how in their respective threads.
Your second question, best one's here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1612881

Hi Everyone! As a part of the usual process when I'm flashing a new phone, I start reading the forum to see what I can and cannot do. Believe it or not, this is the first android device that I own, every other phones weren't just mine. Now, I have two simple questions:
I've flashed some other phones, but in those I've never had to deal with modems or basebands (except from the nightmare called iPhone ), I wanted to know, the roms come with their own Basebands and Kernels or I have to flash'em separately when upgrading to a new rom, OR I can use deriberatly the modem that works best? I ask this because so far I haven't seen any indications on the ROM threads and I saw the compilation post of Modems
As of the kernel I'm not so worried, I'll simply use Siyah's kernel
Thanks!

There is a modems thread in the dev forum. Has a map at the bottom recommending modems

Thanks for the answer, but I didn't explain myself. I saw that thread, actually I mentioned it above. I will have to test the various basebands, I live in Venezuela and there's no recommendation on the map for my country.
Now, resuming and explaining myself better, I just wanna know if Roms have their own Baseband and Kernels included (or just baseband for instance), and if there's any Baseband requirement on the roms -- Obviously there are Kernel requirements.
Thanks!

They come with their own kernel and you can flash over that. Fairly certain they don't have a modem but don't quote me on that. You have to get a Sammy modem for a Sammy ROM and a aosp modem for an aosp rom

For clarification, the only difference in the actual modem from aosp to Sammy is the install script. The modem itself is identical.

Just to clarify this. Some roms have Aroma installer which gives various options or features to flash with your rom on the initial install. Depending on what the developer includes, different kernel and modem choices are possible.
I have a noob question regarding flashing a custom ROM with the HOX+
1) Do I always have to flash a kernel when flashing a rom? If not or if so what are the benefits of doing this.
Thanks all. I look forward to being able to help other users as I lean more.

from my experience with flashing a few ROMs, the kernel, usually but not always, included in the ROM.
some ROM like AOSP/AOKP for our device don't include the kernel.
I'm a noob myself so dont take my words for it

You don't need to flash kernel every time you flash custom ROM as long as your kernel is compatible with the ROM. For example: if you already flash nik3r's elite kernel, you can switch to every sense ROM without flash kernel again. But if you want to flash AOKP/AOSP/CM ROMs, you need to flash spesific kernel, which is maxwen's blade kernel.
Thanks perfect explination
