Is there a way to clone the atrix and make an emulator with the same spec's as the phone so we could have an easier and safer way to test things? Like the bootloader and other mods? Im not a developer but I would like to start learning how and would like a safer way to test my experiment without having to put them on my phone first. Just an idea... probably not a practical/good one.

Android sdk with motorola atrix addon. Go to motodev website for the sdk extension, you can probably find it in this forum also. If you were really serious about doing dev work though there is also a pci version of the tegra that you can purchase from nvidia and test stuff for it in/on your pc. Its about 600 USD if I remember correctly. I'm too lazy to post a link... their site is down right now anyway. its http://developer.nvidia.com/
Moved to proper forum.
The SDK emulator is really just for testing apps though, as it's just running stock Android of whatever build on whatever resolution you choose.
ok thanks everyone, (side note sorry I posted in the wrong thread forgot there was a Q&A and it was related to developing so...) I guess I'll try out the sdk addon... I dont really have the money to spend on the sdk phones they have

Ok,
So this is my first post here, so be nice
I work for Tmo, I have jailbroken iPhone before and I would consider myself pretty tech savy.
Currently Im rockin a Nexus one on 2.2 (love it) A Samsung Vibrant (Eh), and my HD2 is collecting dust waiting for Android.
-----------------------------------
However I was just curious if there is just a quick summary of how to install android on the HD2.
BTW I did not post this question in the Big Linux and Android on the HD2 thread for a fear of being banned!! Geez.
And yes, I used search, and I've skimmed the whole thread, and I've read the 1st 4 posts - and frankly its all a bit over my head & no one really simply answers this question.
I understand Linux needs to be running first, then Humbnti or whatever, then you can run android. But all of that is Greek to me. Like where do I find each one? Where does it go? So and and so on.
If someone could just break it down like this, im sure all somewhat tech savy people could do it easily. How about like this...
1st. You need to get Linix on your phone. Go here for instructions...
2nd. Then you need Humbuntu. Here are instructions...
3rd. You then install android, here....
Something in that format would be great.
And yes I know its not an everyday/ stable build. I have patience, but I would just like some direction.
Thanks for all your help!
Even simpler than that. Its one file. You DL it to your SD card and run it. To get out, soft reset.
Look up "Android HD2" on Youtube. Theres tons of videos on it now. Its here in the HD2 Android forum too... Everywhere.
Sorry buddy,
I think you have been mistaken, if your referring to this video...
youtube.com/watch?v=BujRY_q53JI
Its well known all over YouTube that the guy is a fake. That program will install viruses to your computer & his only intention here is to have people click on his ads.
If you have a video in particular your referring to, please post it here.
With the onset of the unlocked bootloader, I'd like to start looking into deving for Atrix and Android in general.
I do know how to program and can pick up another language rather easily, I know my way inside and out of a Linux box, and I see this as a great opportunity.
So, what sort of things should I start reading/looking into?
I would check out

I am not a dev so there could be better places to start, but have a look

Learn Java. You're going to need it.
You may want to speak to some of the atrix devs or xda devs in general in irc and ask them specifically.
http://webchat.freenode.net/ #moto-atrix and #xda-devs
Alright, thanks for the responses. I'm actually learning Java from the ground up via AP Computer Science A online. I'll lurk IRC for a while as well.
Same here
I'm also looking into Atrix/Android development, although the coolest thing I've ever done with Java (one of two languages I know anything about) is make Snake, which wasn't that good of a game haha.
I've done some tutorials on Android development, so I know my way around a bit of it, but that's the most of it. Is there is a good book or online resource that can help teach Android development for basically beginners?
i would go to this site: http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/wp/2011/05/06/how-to-build-a-linux-kernel/#more-2256
yes, the competition shows you how it is done. You need to learn first how to compile a kernel for the phone.
You can try downloading the motorola kernel and use the steps in the blog to help you do the same.
hello i am i college student who is just getting into developing. I want to someday be a developer but for now i am just trying to access the camera on my atrix through a apk that i have made. i do not know that much about java but i do know a little and i know a little bit about eclipse as well. I have searched and found some stuff bout nothing that just completely helps me.
i need to know what to put in each folder (res, src, xml etc.) of my project.
i am not really trying to do anything new basically just open the camera through something i made.
Since Android is opensource, your best bet is to find source from an existing project and "port" that into your work.
Just moving stuff around in the APK's structure isnt going to work(I may have read your post wrong, you may actually be working in Eclipse). Eitherway, let me help ya out...

more specifically -
http://www.tomgibara.com/android/camera-source
or...
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1105196/android-application-source-code
or even...

So I'm going to try to start doing some dev work. I feel like my programming and hardware background is sufficient enough that I should be able to pick it up fairly quickly especially with some of the tools I've already found.
Question for the existing devs working on the note...
Are you using a tool like Custom ROM Creator Studio or are you doing it by other means? I looked and there doesn't appear to be a book I could read to help me along like I've done in the past with other languages/etc. Are you doing it directly through a linux box? I have a lot of questions as I am beginning this process but for now I have to go off of what I find through google and here. So any help or direction would be appreciated. Thanks!
Edit: I'm currently reading through the documentation at source.android.com
If you don't get and responses I would suggest searching in the general forum area of xda, I found good info on developing there when I was thinking about it.

Searching through the general forum now. Finding a lot of device specific stuff, specifically HTC. I'll keep looking though. Thanks for the tip!
Still doing my homework...any teachers that can tell me what homework I should be doing would still be nice
I admire your courage. Best of luck. We need more devs.

I'm setting up my dev environment on my mac now. With some time (and maybe some luck) I can start moving on this. I'm going to have to set up the same environment on my mac at home as well so I can play around there too. I didn't realize that I'd have to set up such a huge virtual machine to do the development on my windows machine. Didn't really want to give up all that space.
I love my note but want that power that those devs have! Back when I was on my Galaxy S II I went nuts trying to find the one ROM that had everything I wanted but could never find that one ROM that suited me. I have to admit that is my driving force for wanting to develop. Obviously I'll be happy to share what I do (if I really am able to do something) and even support what I release because thats what a good dev does
I've been programming since I was 12. Taken some college courses but dropped out because I knew more than the instructors and was bored out of my mind. Ended up with a job at that university! Now I'm just hoping I can pick up the android os like I was able to pick up everything else.
Hi all.
I'm absolutely a noob to the programming. I don't know any of the programming languages. But I wanted to do the stuff what programmers do . I wanted to build applications compatible for different platforms. I like the programming very very much.
Then after searching I came to know that java is good one to start with. Then I downloaded the java tutorials offline html content from oracle website. I feel it is the standard for learning java. I'm learning with jdk7 u2 but however I just started to learn. I don't know how it goes, but I have some ubuntu usage knowledge and also some android usage knowledge.
And I wanted to create apps for android. So I wanted to learn the android official DEV GUIDE . So I downloaded present version of sdk documentation. I had a look at it and I felt knowledge of java is needed to go through it.
At first I wanted to start development by creating my own android app. So learning java atfirst and later android documentation is must as I think.
So, I THOUGHT OF ASKING U GUYS HOW MUCH TIME (in days, weeks, or months) U RECOMMEND TO LEARN JAVA from oracle tutorials offline. SIMILARLY HOW MUCH TIME FOR ANDROID DOCUMENTATION.
I know the learning time varies from person to person but what is the time for an average noob person . And if u learnt java and android from noob stage can u tell me how much time it took for u.
Thanks in advance and sorry for my english.
Pls feel free to give me suggestions if you have any...
Anyone please.
Well I'm in the same boat as, you are! I want to learn more about android, developing and what not but am limited because I refuse to root my phone. However this kinda stuff still interests me. So if you have any takers on this thread with some learning modules or what not just shoot me a PM or something with what you learned! Thank you!

Learning curve is a few months if you stay motivated. Took me a year to be familiar with c++. I'm still learning java and the android API

And BTW root has nothing to do with app development right?

Depends on the app your making.
Ive been reading alot about java, and android. Theres a great video on xda tv. Actually 2 videos. Ones to set up eclipse and the android sdk. And run a basic app. The second is making of a root app.., though that one i got brain block on right at the point where adam says he need to edit some files.. from that point on my brain froze and i gave up lok. Though i have managed to create an app with buttons that do nothing lol..ui looks cool though..
Have a look for the frogger source code by doing a google search.. that helped quite a bit.
Loads of info scattered about. At the min im currently trying to piece together how to make a button open google maps to show a specific location.. or even open google direction so it uses your location and points to a place i define..
Easy said then done as im struggling with where i type intent codes etc..
