I have a stock G-tablet and want to flash a new rom for the first time. I have rooted/flashed CM on my phone, but have some questions before I do it. I did the OTA update when i first started my tablet. It is 3588 Edition now.
Do i need to nuke it before i try to install CW.8 and flash Vegan-GE? Or should i install CW .8 and Clear cache, wipe data and install the rom?
Do i need to do the CW partition?
Can I do a CW backup of the stock rom so i can just flash back to that point?
Would you suggest going to GE or tab-5.1.1? I have read through all 72 pages on the dev. section and it seems like most of the problems are minor and hopefully can be resolved in time (mainly video issues)
Would you suggest flashing the pershoots OC kernel or just using the default GE kernal? There weren't too many posts about the OC kernel just a few saying that the tablet benchmarked incredibly high.

Hello,
When you flash a ROM, and specifically flash back to stock 3588, does it include the original kernel?
At one time or another I've had different ROM's loaded and also replaced the kernel. I've re-flashed back to 3588 but just not sure if it's all been reset.
When I look under the settings information what should I be seeing for the kernel name?
Thanks,
Neudle
When you flash any of the current roms they all have a kernel. Flashing any official updates from viewsonic will also wipe clockwork recovery as well as rfeplacing the kernel
Ok, thank you for the response.
This is what I expected but I wanted to be sure. At one time I used Pershoot's but I've switched ROM's 3 or 4 times since then.
Also not able to boot to the clockwork menu so I assumed that was removed as well.

Hello folks,
I got my GTab a couple of weeks ago and the first thing i did was follow the awesome guide to flash the 'Flashback' Honeycomb rom. I've been running it for 2 weeks and have also updated to the latest alpha release. I love the HC overall but since there are a couple of basic issues in all HC roms, i've decided to move back to Gingerbread.
I've searched around but haven't found the method to go back to GB from HC. I understand that I can't just flash it from CWM as it gives some errors.
I flashed HC throught NVFlash so I'm guessing there's got to be some other way of moving to GB, maybe repartitioning?
I would really appreciate if someone here can point me to a guide to flash GB from HC, including the partitioning requirements.
I will check out the GB roms and their functionality but i might move back to HC once some stable roms are out, so i would like to keep that door open.
Thanks for your help in advance!
are you trying to go from a 1.2 bootloader HC rom to a 1.1 bootloader GB rom?
Visit the Gtablet for dummies website. You can download the 1.1 bootloader NVFlash and use it to get back to stock 3588. I suggest you get the one with CWM built in. Once there, you can flash any GB rom you want.
If you're staying on the 1.2 bootloader, just flash the Rom from CWM, and make sure that you wipe Dalvik cache, and a wipe data/factory reset in CWM and it should work fine.
problems arise when jumping bootloaders, using different versions of CWM...they don't play well with eachother.
After playing around with CM7, then GeeWiz, I decided to return to a rooted stock ROM. Everything went smoothly and the phone is working fine, but I was left with a few questions about CWM, and I'd like to increase my understanding. First, when I went from CM7 to GeeWiz, I ended up with CWM4. Not the "fixed for CM7", but cwm4-bml-i500.tar. I've read a lot about cwm4 being for MTD and 2.5 being for TouchWiz, but I assumed that bml in the filename meant that it would be OK for that partition map. In any event, I've never had any problems with it although I just flashed 2.5 back to be on the safe side. Is there any reason why I can't use it?
You might wonder what difference it makes since I went back to stock, which leads to my second question. After restoring the EH03 ROM and flashing the EH03 kernel over the GeeWiz kernel, I expected cwm to get overwritten by the stock recovery, but it didn't. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to keep cwm, but I don't understand. Almost everything I've been able to find online says that the stock kernel will overwrite cwm, although I did find one forum post somewhere (not on XDA) that indicated that if you're rooted cwm will stick. Can someone plese enlighten me.
I have a vibrant with Asgard Version 3.1.2 installed. How do I upgrade that to a jellybean rom? The problem is changing the partition from bml to mtd and I haven't done this for a long while and I only did it on a Galaxy S 4g, not a Vibrant. I remember I had to get version 3 or above of CWM for the 4g when I upgraded it to jb long ago. I never got the Vibrant past Asgard because the phone belongs to an ex-girlfriend and I haven't worked on her phone for over a year.
I tried flashing a kernel that had version 5 something of CWM on it (99 problems) but although I was able to flash it and the jb roms seemed to be loading, every time I rebooted it would only go to recovery and the new rom would never boot up. Reflashing Asgard with Odin didn't work, I kept getting the lady Sandra saying there was not enough space on the card to convert it to lagfix and it has been a long time since I ever had to deal with her at all. I was able to Odin a stock Froyo rom and it now boots up to the old grassy screen with the bloatware.
I suppose if a Vibrant works like a 4g I'll now be able to reflash Asgard but maybe that is not what I am supposed to do. You guys have so many roms and kernels compared to the 4g forum that I'm kind of lost trying to deal with this phone. I have not had to convert from bml to mtd for a long time. The phone I have came with an odin version of jb that got around all of that crazy stuff.
I remember using the Vibrant toolbox a long time ago as part of the upgrade, but the link now points to a page that isn't there any more.
Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028 and use Odin to flash back to stock JFD, which is 2.1 not 2.2. After you flash to stock, use update.zip B from the link above to get CWM (clockwork mod recovery), you have you reinstall packages twice for it to work FYI. To flash to Jellybean from stock you must flash the ROM twice as well (important), the first flash just upgrades your CWM recovery. It will reboot to Jellybean CWM (blue), just flash the ROM again and you will be good to go. Remember to follow the devs install instructions, it's usually wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache then flash the ROM and fix permissions. My favorite Jellybean ROM is Avatar in case you want a suggestion, tons of themes and very stable, I prefer Semaphore kernel as well, both can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982728.

Keep getting install failed /system and /data. No os found
what ROM are you trying to install? how did you install TWRP?
by the way, the way it works on this phone is that the recovery is packaged with a kernel. whatever the kernel has, you're stuck with. unless you flash a kernel that has an alternative recovery (example: one of hhp's Devil TWRP kernels) you can't just flash a recovery. so maybe you have a bad flash if you tried doing that.
Also you need to quit spamming every spot in the fascinate fourms.
there are only maybe a dozen of us real active, we can read your posts.
I've explained over and over the process,
Keep on reading, reading and then read some more.
Very thankful for all the help

I was trying to install pa_fascinatemtd-4.2-BETA1-20140318.
i tried to install TWRP through CWM. But when i used ROM manager to select recovery 3.x and it detected TWRP. i installed JB from avatar then flashed cm-11-20140221-UNOFFICIAL-fascinatemtd and PA__Gapps after factory/reset and dalvik wipe. but the menu was from cwm4_fixed_for_cm7-ODIN even though ROM Manager said TWRP recovery
right now running
Android 4.4.2
Band EH3
Kernel version 3.0.101-ge40c0be don't know which kind it is. don't know if it install from CM-11 or the avatar rom i first installed.

there are a few radios for the fascinate. the gingerbread radios are EH03 (the one you have right now from the official VZW OTA, i use this one and am ok with it), EC09 (from an old gingerbread leak, some people prefer this radio over the others). i know there's other radios but the only older one you should probably use is ED05 from an old Froyo OTA.
thanks. this upgrade help alot though. have to test yuoube app.also was having issue with that too.
