what ROM are you trying to install? how did you install TWRP?
by the way, the way it works on this phone is that the recovery is packaged with a kernel. whatever the kernel has, you're stuck with. unless you flash a kernel that has an alternative recovery (example: one of hhp's Devil TWRP kernels) you can't just flash a recovery. so maybe you have a bad flash if you tried doing that.
Also you need to quit spamming every spot in the fascinate fourms.

is their a radio that can boost the 3g reception? (besides the one's in the guide)
that cm-11 rom runs super. i installed JB then the cm-11.
have a question about kernels but going to read up first about them,

I was trying to install pa_fascinatemtd-4.2-BETA1-20140318.
i tried to install TWRP through CWM. But when i used ROM manager to select recovery 3.x and it detected TWRP. i installed JB from avatar then flashed cm-11-20140221-UNOFFICIAL-fascinatemtd and PA__Gapps after factory/reset and dalvik wipe. but the menu was from cwm4_fixed_for_cm7-ODIN even though ROM Manager said TWRP recovery

there are a few radios for the fascinate. the gingerbread radios are EH03 (the one you have right now from the official VZW OTA, i use this one and am ok with it), EC09 (from an old gingerbread leak, some people prefer this radio over the others). i know there's other radios but the only older one you should probably use is ED05 from an old Froyo OTA.

I have tried for the past 4 hours to install the AOSP MIUI ROM. I have tried a newer recovery, a mtd kernel. No luck. I install the rom in CWM 2.5, but it boot loops at that point and states that the sd card can not be mounted. It then counts down to 20 and resets over and over. Can anyone shed light and provide steps?
Well the first thing I would do for yourself is to Odin back to stock using the 2.2 pit file as well as odining the stock 2.2 ROM. Make sure you repartition as well so that everything is formatted!!! This will solve SO many issues and give prospective forum members a place to start with your problems you are having.

I am going to assume you have odin and not link a download simply for the fact that if you have read ANYTHING pertaining to CM7 or MIUI in our forums you should be well aware of how to use it.
After wiping you will need to flash the modem you want via odin. They are located in the sticky in the dev thread.
After this you will need to flash the CWM that is located in the CM7 or MIUI threads themselves.

Use odin to flash it, then simply flash the AOSP package of your choice from the their respective threads here in the forums.

Also worth noting that I missed in the first post. You mentioned CWM 2.5....sadly this will not work nor will it work with any other CWM floating around. The ONLY way currently to flash it is with the CWM I linked above. These are from JT and fixed to work with the AOSP ROMs.

Thank you, I tried to use the new recovery provided by JT, alas it did not work for MIUI, I will try again tomorrow when spirits are higher, I usually start from DL09 and OTA my way back to ED04, Do i have to stay on EB01 or can i use ED04, and yes i am familiar with odin. Thanks again my friend.

Don't quote me.... It shouldn't matter (EB01, ED01, ED04...etc) All that is needed is the updated recovery to run the package install. The package will format your filesystem so your version should not matter. If you are referring to the modem... its your preference. I am on EC01 but last time I was on like ED04 or something...
Might also try flashing CM7 first, booting in, then flashing MIUI since they use the same BML format.
Still no dice, I'm sick of trying this, I have Odined back to 2.2 around 10 times already. A good write-up is definitely necessary.
What kernal are you loading with ED04, etc.. before trying CM7?

No, I was just making sure you weren't loading any voodoo kernals.
When I had issues loading MIUI, I went all the way back to the DI01 all in one rom (odin) then DL09, then CWM Fix all (3.x), then MIUI. Load the rom before you load the MIUI cwr.
I'm having major problems too. I've tried about every method to get onto CM7, but I either end up with boot loops or get stuck on the GalaxyS/CM7 boot screen for a long time (over 30 minutes).
I've started from almost every platform (stock back to DI01, comrom, evil, ....)
Used JT's cwm and still no go. I've rebuild my partitions in both odin and heimdall, I don't know what else to try myself.
I've gotten to the same place with the Galaxy S and Cyanogen screen, help is appreciated.

Getting a bit confused about all this, so am wondering if i've got it right. A rom is the whole thing, it includes a kernel and so forth? So a Kernel is a part of the rom right? And you can flash kernels individually without flashing a whole new rom? But what is a firmware then? Just another name of a rom?
Also on the Galaxy S2 can you flash custom roms, like Lite'ning, without getting root first? Or do you need to get root before flashing custom roms? If you can flash custom roms first without rooting, will the custom rom then give you root as long as it includes it?
And you also got recovery, which is a separate thing again? Galaxy S2 comes with a very basic one if i've understood correctly, but there is others out there that you can install, which also gives you the ability of flashing roms straight from the microsd/phone storage?
So have i gotten any of this? Hope am not to far off

ROM's and FIRMWARE: The ROM or Read Only Memory is the internal flash memory where the core operating system resides. The Firmware is a device specific part of the ROM that controls various hardware components. So the firmware is contained in the ROM but in the context of Android the terms are often used interchangeably.
KERNELS: Different kernels offer different advantages, some are fast, some are light weight on the battery and some are a mix, so yes you can in most cases flash a different kernel with a ROM, and then your phone will be running the custom ROM you picked with the new kernel you flashed.
Rooting: You must have a rooted phone inorder to flash a custom rom, but rooting in my opinion seems really safe and it really easy to do on the SG2
There are things that allow you to flash from your SD card and you do that by entering clockworkmod revovery, apps like rom manager also allow you to flash from sd card, but you can always use odin, which is safe and fast

Thanks, and very nicely explained =) Another question then, what is the reason one need root before you can flash custom firmwares? As i heard Galaxy S2 doesn't really have any safety measures put in to stop things, like HTC do with their bootloader. Another thing is that i checked the thread for the Lite'ning rom, and saw the installation procedure, and it doesn't mention anything about having root before starting, so am getting a bit confused there.
You don't need to root before flashing a custom ROM as long as you can enter download mode (power up with volume down, home and power button pressed) and can flash the ROM via Odin.
If the ROM is flashable only via ClockWorkMod recovery (a zip that you copy on your phone) then you need to flash something that includes that recovery before flashing the rom (like CF-Root or any kernel that includes CWM).
Lite'ning ROM that you mentioned earlier is flashable via Odin so no problem.
Every ROM includes a Kernel, the only thing they sometimes don't include is the modem like in VillainROM, you have to flash it separately. And also, if a ROM is announced as rooted, when you flash it, you will have root regardless of the state before flashing

If you dont flash a modem it will just use the one you had before. They talk about it in the old thread and also in the new but not in the firsts posts, you'll have to do a search.
Plus Modem Kernels are interchangeable .
KH3 Firmware with KI4 modem and KH1 kernel .

What is the best method to use to update Kernels and ROMs?
I'm using Flash Image to flash the Kernel and TWRP to flash the ROM but I see alot of other methods out there not sure what the best is to use?
Just and FYI I use the HTC unlock method with S-on
I've been using ClockwordMod for 6 months now and have had no issues. It always works just fine for me. I see other people who say that TWRP is the best, but have yet to understand or see anyone give a good reason as to why it is better. I've thought about installing TWRP, but since Clockwork has worked great for me, I don't see the benefit unless someone can enlighten me?
I use twrp 1.1.1 its my favorite one of all and I tried all of them. You can flash multiple zips all at 1 time. Im on hboot 1.5 so I always fastboot into recovery so I know kernel will stick. Some roms out there will not flash unless you use twrp 2.0 you just have to read devs OP's thoroughly.

I agree with Jabawockee. I've tried them all and 1.1.1 is great but for just flashing a different kernel i use gui and to just flash mods I was gui to flash my recovery then reboot into recovery and flash my mods.
This is the first time I rooted my phone and I used step 6 on this link in your forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070 . Everything went fine but I then downloaded rom manager and when I select flash clockworkmod it only gives me the choice of choosing the samsung epic4g or the samsung galaxyS i9000. It does not give me the option of choosing the fascinate. I selected the i9000 but stopped there because I figured that I should try to fix this situation and be able to select the fascinate, before I move foward. Please help me move foward so I will be able to put a rom on my phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

rom manager is useless for the fascinate...
I also ran into this issue. If your CWM is not "sticky" (it goes to System Recovery <3e> when you reboot recovery), you must flash the appropriate version of CWM with ODIN before a ROM flash. (CWM ALL.tar for bml roms [anything that is not cm7, MIUI, or ICS] or cwm4_fixed_for_cm7.tar for MTD ROM's [cm7, MIUI, or ICS])

This makes absolutely no sense!? He's got ROMs up there for just about every Android phone on the market, all to be used with ROM Manager.
I wanted to install it via Odin but naturally that would be too simple: it's a zip file and Odin won't recognize anything but tar and 2 others formats.
You can flash any .zip ROM with CWM. There's no need for ROM Manager. BTW, you can post a link if you uncheck "parse links in text automatically."

all you need to do is boot into cwm recovery via the power menu and flash away. the problem with rom manager on the fascinate is getting into the right recovery...causes more problems than its worth on this device. make sense yet? probably not since you have not been down this road yet, but many of us have. so take the advice given or dont and learn the hard way.
Honestly, I am trying to take the advice given but not all of it fit my situation.
I'm definitely something of a noob to Android (Not to linux or IT though). I've had my phone for all of a month and rooted it only days ago.
It's all starting to come together, finally. It's tricky for a noob because there are so many different versions of the phone hardware, versions of Android, this or that kernel that only works with these ROMs, old/newer versions of those, old posts and advice, newer posts with adjusted advice.. etc.. It's been a week long crash course!
Anyhoo, I couldn't flash/upgrade CWM because it didn't stick from the original Odin install. When I rebooted, I'd always return to the stock <3e> recovery. Even after two more installs of CWM via Odin.
I used the cwm-recovery-all.tar in your guide, Droidstyle. (great job BTW)
I followed the directions in Section 6 to the letter. I even printed it out and highlighted key sections.
So you see, I was in a catch-22; I needed CWM to flash CWM? Odin was my only option at that point.
Then I read on another thread here about renaming the /system/recovery-from-boot.p script, and installing CWM once more.
That worked, so now I can finally boot into CWM recovery like a happy man. (I also tried a more specific version of CWM for good measure: cwm4-bml-i500.tar, not really sure if that made a difference)
So I made my first real nandroid backup last night.
Next on my list is a new kernel. Still deciding between KGB, lean, and whatever else is out there.
I still don't get the whole mess with ROM Manager though. I agree with you, DS, I just don't get why he'd have zips for every phone under the sun but his own app doesn't seem to allow them to be used. It's bizarre. The latest reviews on the market are not flattering either.

You are on the Samsung Fascinate. If it is Verizon then it is model number i500. If it doesnt say Fascinate or i500 it isn't for your device and you don't need to worry about it. If you flash something that isn't stated as being for the i500 or VERIZON Fascinate then you will have a lovely new temporary paper weight.

You couldn't have followed it to the letter because it is a well known fact that if you boot up with a stock kernel still flashed it will replace your recovery. Droidstyle certainly knows this and certainly accounted for it in his guide. So, you need to either boot directly into CWM or flash a non-stock kernel prior to rebooting the phone.

Yeah it sounds like that will work...not the most elegant way to take care of it...but it sounds like it would be okay.

We already talked about the kernel situation. Consider Geewiz if you want something thats all-in-one and pretty much impossible to mess up. KGB is good. Leankernel always gave me the best battery life but YMMV.

He showed no interest in helping the devs here get ROM manager working (again) on the phone. If you gave him money, blame him for not providing the support and resources to get it working on this phone. Some people are umm...."lacking in people skills."
Oh, and as great as the Gingerbread ROMs are...the mtd ICS roms blow them out of the water
So I was having some issues with feedback during calls with almost all custom ROMS. I reverted back to the gingerbread stock rom via odin to see if it was just a ROM problem and I found the source of the initial problem. But now when I boot into the recovery, it won't flash any new ROM I want to go back to. I do the normal flash/wipe + the cache for good measure, and apply the zip and It'll say "Short write of /tmp/sideload/package.zip (no space left on the device)." But I have 4gb free on my phone so i'm definitely not out of space. I've tried the AOKP JB rom, shoshock, and the newest cyanogen mod. No luck on any of them.
What am I doing wrong?

Well the process is fairly straight forward. I think Ive explained the details as well as I can. I flashed the stock firmware through Odin and can't reflash any new rom or kernel. I made a nanbackup before doing this but the factory stocks kernel doesn't support backup/restore. I need to go from this old stock gingerbread rom back to shoshock or anything else to restore my backup.
In your explanation, I didn't see mention of how you rooted the device, or what custom-kernel you chose, or how (or if) you flashed the custom kernel. The stock recovery won't allow the installation of firmware that was not signed by Samsung, and Odin-flashing custom firmware is not the preferred method.

Once you're rooted and kernel'd, and can tell us what android version firmware you're trying to get to, we can better suggest which custom kernel to flash prior.

I was on the shoshock rom before I decided to revert to the factory rom to test some things out. The signed package thing you mentioned makes sense because signature verification fails whenever i try to flash a different kernel. But it wont let me flash any of the jelly bean ROMS either (refer to my first post's error).

But mobile odin lite has been giving me constant trouble. it keeps saying I need to install another ad on in order to flash stuff and when I hit OK, the link takes me to my browser, but doesnt direct me to the web page that provides the ad-on download. Where do I go from here?
The add-on that mobile odin is trying to download is the i777 flash kernel that it needs to perform its magic. It's in post #10 of the mobile odin thread. Whether you use mobile odin lite or pro, you need this flash kernel. I'm not sure why it wouldn't download it from within the app.
