Now I know you're going to call me paranoid....but I have been seeing a progressive shortening of battery life on my device as we progressively move into more advanced custom kernels created by our lovely devs
Anyone care to discuss?
** it has been pointed out to me we are still not this far along in kernels...still an interesting read
Should be in general not development
i only put it here because in "general" this would more directly impact "development", target audience and all.....i suppose they can move if they like, but just so you know, i did ponder that for a minute..

You know there's no "they". Only mod can move it.
You've just been Fascinated
they refers to the collective known as "the mods"
what the hell is going on around here anyways with the obsession with "posts being in the wrong place"....and by that i dont mean any disrespect, but thats why you have mods, to move to errant thread or two, why is it lately the only thing people want to respond with is, "you should have posted this in ______ section" instead of actually responding to the thread topic....????

I personally think if its a development related discussion it belongs here. Not to say this post has any direct relation to "current development" There doesn't have to be a zip or a side load or a script to be a development related post.
Maybe our development sections (for all devices) should have restricted access to post unless the mods deem the memeber a developer. Read/write and read only type scenario. :-/

A lot of people seem to care because as we mostly come to this forum to check the latest in rom and kernel development. With so much happening right now with updates coming here is like reading the news headlines. This post where it is, is well more like spam. Also because the battery life issue has been discussed many many times across the board and solutions given have worked for most. also need [] containing the tag of the thread.

fair enough...threads like this without specific aims toward developing/improving our phone just clutter this subforum that frankly the vast majority of poeple come to for roms/kernels/mods..
if this is a linux/android specific discussion then the general android development forum or something...because i dont think this relates to anything that will specifically do anything for our phones

I don't own a tbolt but seems to be a lot of talk on the 4g not playing to nice. Think it was acting like wifi when it couldn't get a good 4g connection, trying, failing, reverting to 3g, then repeating. Again don't have one so just repeating what others have said, i'm sure theres lots on the sit in the tbolt forum. Whatever the exact issue is, its most likely centered on the lte radio.
Nice article. Relates directly to the biggest issue of all android devices. Good performance = bad battery. This helps clarify that. KEEP IN ANDROID [email protected]!

Maybe there needs to be a separate section for "Releases" then if this article honestly really ruined you visit like Spam. Where do people discuss development issues if not in the development section? This section like you pointed out is where everyone comes to get the latest rom or kernel. Seems to me that warrants its own Release section.....oh wait....that's why the mods asked those types of threads to be titled specifically in a format that makes that obvious. Then the discussion threads could co-exist in the same section without being considered "Spam"

It is a good article and it is development related. Just because its not a rom, kernel zip, script, apk or system dump doesn't disqualify it from the development forum.
(Though android general may have been a better option as stated previously.)
Spend as much time policing your own actions as you do trolling threads like a lynch mob and maybe things will get to the way they used to be on this site.

yeah if there was a "development discussion" section that would be best....as if all the articles available out that could be posted like this to foster discussion ended up in here.......well it would really clutter stuff up
my own personal opinion (and its not worth anything) is that the development section is best served as a release...and discussion of said release...section...i mean thats what 95% of us treat it as...and have been accustomed to having it as such

Been working on a build of CM7 - got my laptop back up and running and thought I'd tackle this. Last night I started the build and woke up this morning to this:
make: *** No rule to make target `vendor/samsung/c1-common/proprietary/BCM4330B1_002.001.003.0128.0162.hcd', needed by `out/target/product/galaxys2att/system/bin/BCM4330B1_002.001.003.0128.0162.hcd'. Stop.
Any idea how to get passed this? From the looks of it, I was close to the end of the build process
Thanks I appreciate any help...
Sort of got this resolved. Codeworkx simply stated its an issue of missing proprietary files. Ill have to copy them over which I'm not sure why they weren't in the first place...

Debugging a compiler error isn't development? Perhaps the so called development forums are becoming too focused on showing off wares, with little or no attention being paid to actually developing?
At first he was asking a question about decompiling. Since he answered his own questions, I threw it in General. Since he is not offering a rom/kernel/tool then this does not belong in the Dev section.
Thanks I guess.

Exactly, it is a question so it would belong in the Q/A sections not the development section. This stuff isn't new, read the forum rules. Quite simple to understand if you ask me.
The way I see it, its just red's opinion. He sees it fit in here then so be it, his opinion and we just have to live with it. Regardless its still all search able information.

Actually, it is not his opinion, it is xda rules. The only posts in the development boards, are posts discussing actual development. If the post is a question, it has no business being on the development board. Examples of acceptable dev topics:
Release of a new/updated rom
Release of a new/updated kernel
Release of a new/updated hardware specific patch
Release of a new/updated hardware specific app
*Technical * discussion of ongoing hardware /software development (rooting, bootloader, etc). Asking when root wil be available is not technical.
If your title for a post is in the form of a basic question, it does not belong in development, period.
I have to play devils advocate... but with the understanding that I'm doing just that and not really arguing...
I posed a similar question to Red in a PM. If I have a question asking how I can Retro fit Samsung propriatary shared libs into a new program I'm writing, or where I might find headers for those libs, where does that question go? Its certainly technical and development related... it also doesn't seem to fit in the q&a subforum (which doesn't seem to have any dev questions but is more general.)
Yet, its a question, and doesn't belong in the "development" subforum under a strict interpretation of the rules (which seems to say that the dev forum is only used to advertise mods, roms, etc)
Red suggested the q&a subforum. I disagree, but he is a moderator.
Not being sarcastic here, but perhaps we really do need new subforums for posting links to the result of development and allow the development subforums to go back to discussing that and other development. (Or vice versa) long ago when I first joined xda, discussing development was encouraged (and the primary purpose of xda-DEVELOPERS.)

I understand how you feel and would love it myself but at this point and time with the influx of Soo many non tech minded people that don't know the diff Between a normal question and a development related question that all questions are pointed to the Q&A.
There seems to be confusion about posting ROMs in General or Developers section. I just reported a post and fjasked that a "stock" ROM be moved from the Dev section to the General section because recently another Stock ROM was in fact moved with the reason that all stock ROMs belong in General. The response to my report was "this is a tough call I ll move it but it could stay in dev". So, that is a very non-committal answer from a mod. In addition, this post, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184817, is an example of previous guidance on the subject. It clearly states that the Dev section is "only meant for very advanced technical discussion directly related to ROM development activity and the delivery of actual ROMs and ROM components ONLY". I would agree with this guidance. Can we stop differentiating between stock and no-stock ROMs and place ALL ROMs in the Dev section, as stated in the above guidance? Thank you for you work and time. XDA is a great place. I am not whining or complaining. I am merely asking for clarification of this issue so we can move on.
sec
um, your "question" for clarification belongs in the Q section. Not General.
Also, reading the Dev section I think it is pretty clear that it is for rom development only.
Stock roms aren't development...in this case it's a link to a leaked rom. that's it...doesn't belong in development.
So, if the Mod moved it to General it was done correctly.

ROM/Kernels in Dev no matter if its stock or custom! That's it no argument! I had only three phone couple of tablets but whatever forum i went to. THis is the theory they followed! Very simple idk what's big deal about it! IDK why this ppl don't like that!

Your first sentence made me lol. You're right but I thought maybe since it was asking about the General then it could go in the General. Maybe it will be moved. Whatever.
Your second point is the crux of my question. If you read the guidance that I referenced it does not discriminate against stock ROMs. All ROMs are development, as are all kernels and other code. Code can be developed, whether it is stock code or other. Or at least that what I think.
I am anxious to see what the Moderators have to say. They have been very quiet on this issue.

I agree with you, I've been here a while , thru a span of of six devices forums myself also(htc excalibur-tmo dash/htc tilt-kaiser/htc fuze-raphael/the first android OG "htc dream-Tmobile G1"/htc leo/hd2) and now here and all roms have always been in the rom development section, even stock roms that serve as base for custom roms are part of development .
I have been frequenting this site since my PPC6600 and all ROMs official or otherwise have been in a development section of some type. That goes back 5 + years (a very long time in tech years)
I don't know if that means anything to anyone, but us old guys don't like change =P.

Stock ROMs belong in General according to the rules. Not sure if they are enforced or not though.
I dunno why they changed the rule. Is it specific for AT&T Galaxy Note or in general? Because at least Captivate/i9000/i9100 section have 'stock ROM list' sticky on development section.

Leaked ROMs are still not something you made thus you aren't developing them, thus why would the go in development? I understand why people would want to put them there, but according to the rules, its not where they belong.

Lol, who the hell cares? Just post it in one of the two and if a mod feels like moving it, let him. Personally I think any rom of any type should all go in one section so they're easy to find... but I'm not gonna cry about it if the mod wants it in general.
Hey all,
As some of you have probably noticed by now, we have a new Development section for original works. As explained in the portal article Introducing the Original Development Forums, these forums were found to be very useful in other sections and there has been a lot of requests to add them for more devices.
Please refer to the article for general guidelines on what is and isn't appropriate to post there, and if you have any questions feel free to ask in this thread or to PM any of the moderators about it.
Those using Tapatalk or the XDA app will probably need to refresh the forums list in order to see it. You can do this by going to the base forum view that list all of the different devices and refreshing or by unsubscribing and then resubscribing to this section.

I think this is neat, since I'm only really interested in the original development anyway, because that tends to be more fun.
Very nice. This will be extremely useful for devs.
edit: Hey Haus. Just an idea, but it would be nice to have a Recognized Dev forum with-in each device. One where we can collaborate and figure out mods together and have less chatter from non-devs. But a place where non-devs can still have access to links to mods and such. Just a thought.

The way I see it is that it creates more place to navigate through to look for roms and other work. I personally do not see the real need for it especially since both sub forums would contain the same kind of information except that one would have original work and the other would not. This could have been done a different way without completely creating a new sub forum that would produce a similar result. For example, the OP post could explain that it's original work or the thread title for all original work would be identified with a prefix of ORG.
At any rate, it seems that others see it useful and probably very helpful for developers. I am not bothered by it! However, I would have preferred things to stay the way they were.
I'm just a little confused as to what defines original development versus non-original. Original meaning not ported from another device? As I browsed through the ROMs in each section I couldn't figure out what differentiated one from the other making it original.

The announcement really details the difference.
For example, CM9 development is original because it's new and big and it's something that's being created.
ViperROM, for example, is not original because it is based on HTCs stock ROM.

Well that is what I thought would be the factor at first. Except ViperROM and others based on stock are in the original section while other stock based ROMs are not.

There are a lot of times where someone with a low post count is able to help out a lot so we don't want to limit it too much, but making it so only RDs (and maybe RCs/RTs) can create new threads there may be a good idea. Try running it by them in the RD area to see if it's possible.

Unfortunately a lot of it is kind of subjective since it's a difficult thing to really define, but for the most part it depends on how significant the changes with the ROM are. It's very much a work in progress still so I apologize if things get bounced around some while it's all being sorted.

xHausx, I like your work and appreciate all the explanations you give but I gotta say.. this new section is retarded.
Maybe it was needed in the Samsung forums but we don't need it here. It's just going to confuse a ton of people.
I'm not a dev, so if they like the idea that's great. I just see it as a way for more silly arguments to start. I think that development is development the smallest of ideas is original. Seems like if you're in original then your work is somehow better. I guess we'll see how it works out.

I think the most annoying part of this feature is having to look in two different places for the same thing and being unsure which forum your favorite rom(s) are located in. The more I use this (both on a desktop and on the phone), the more annoying it is. I don't think the average user care much whether the rom is original or not as long as it works well and do what it is supposed to do.
The idea behind adding this feature is great but its reality is not.
I was excited about the section but it all seems the same as before. Every mod, derivative rom, and other FAQs.
I think it probably would have best been split AOSP core and HTC core if you're going to split it at all, otherwise just leave it the way it was, as messy as it was.
Im not a fan of it either. I find it hard to differentiate between the two. I've read the announcement but I still find myself going into both looking for a specific thread. I think this will just confuse a lot of people but if the devs like it then ok...

I'm a moderator, and I make roms and mods and themes, some of that is "original". I've written some tutorials for original things as well. Honestly I think this is silly. Maybe tag original dev threads or something like the "recognized" program. But differentiating dev threads seems like a lot more headache for devs and users alike. It's like making a new original themes section where the themer drew his images from scratch and wrote new xmls instead of modifying existing images and code. Who's idea was this? I fail to see it's benefit. If it is what it is then cool. But there's already RUU kitchen built roms in the "original" section, and though there may be "original" tweaks to said roms, I don't know that that makes them so. I'd love to have some transparent open discussion about this with users/devs/moderators alike. Thoughts? Counters? Etc?
Seems to me it would be nice to have sub forums for things like kernals/tw roms/aosp roms/themes
Right now it seems like it is sorted on something most people don't care about and we have to wade through it all just to get two the meat and potatoes of what we are actually looking for.

Because it is xda forums and xda makes the rules. I agree, the organization could be improved...but it is what it is.
I bet if you created more sub forums the moderators wouldn't be able to keep up. It's tough for them as it is with as many devices listed here. Could you imagine adding two or three more sub forums to every device? OMG

I am not saying just adding but having better subs
I think if re organized it would be easier to maintain. Plus you wouldnt have to moderate threads like "where did the carbon rom go"
I think a lot of folks probably feel the same way but i guess whatever i am not the one maintaining....

It would make it more logical, but you would need more mods. People can't even figure out to not post a question in development or even more common general. Could you imagine if we had more sub forums for then to miss post in.
Perefect example, this question (labeled question in the title) posted in the wrong section (general). Just sayin

good catch.... however it should be titled "discussion about sub forums"
I am not saying we need more sub forums. i am saying we need better lines between them. After all a lot of questions just turn into discussions.
90% of the people don't know or care the difference between orig dev and dev.
however 90% would know the difference between a rom and a kernal.

I think this might be a little optimistic :silly: But your point is still valid. I think a re-organization would be nice.
I don't see any need for more sub-forums. The current organization makes perfect sense. That is why there is a naming convention for kernels and ROM's. The current organization is the result of years of trying different organization of sub's on XDA.
Remember, first and foremost XDA is a forum for developers to collaborate and share work.
But everybody is entitled to have an opinion, I'm not trying to stifle that.

If only there was a search function you could use. Or even just a way to save your favorite threads.... lol j/k someone had to say it.
I agree, there does seem to be room for improvement.
IMO the Q&A should be eliminated. If you have a question about a ROM, Kernel, or Theme ask it in that thread. Any other kind of question should be in general or accessories. I would even go as far to say the general section should be shared with all carrier forums, like accessories is.
I also think Themes and apps should be split. Themes should go in development and be carrier specific. Apps should be part of accessories because the majority can be used no matter carrier.
It would actually condense the number of sections and should be easier to monitor. But it's just my opinion, from the outside looking in.

Alright everyone i have taken an idea i saw on the razr forums for a discussion thread to keep the main thread less cluttered. I believe (as I'm sure others do as well), that the main ROM thread should be kept more towards its core purpose, which is discussion related to the development of the ROM. That is the purpose of this thread. You guys feel free to ask questions that you may have here. Of course be respectful as always.
wrong forum..........should be in "general"

And of course you can't move your own threads on this site, so it will have to be here until someone moves it.
And then once it is moved no one will be able to find it, lol.
Isn't the question asking and discussion also part of the reason why the main thread exists?

I'm pretty sure some people would like not having to surf through the thread full of repeated questions to find news related to the actual development.
prshosting.org
I actually like this idea because so many people post oft repeated questions as well as stuff that doesn't pertain to the ROM itself.

Well for that, can't you just look up the developers profile and look at his recent posts to see if theres anything new for the ROM? This thread is pointless and I don't see it being open for too long

Do you have a suggestion for keeping the other thread clean? I can't see that you are keeping it clean because you aren't keeping this thread very tidy with all of your smart aleck remarks.

Dude these threads are pointless. Point blank. The original thread is where all this should be. There is no way to clean up threads. Just read through the pages n thats it. If you read through the last 10 pages and you dont find an answer to your problem then ask again. Or kindly ask if theres anything new from the dev. Look these threads are pointless and are usually shut down. I don't know how this thread is still even open. Especially since its in the wrong section because the development section is for development only

Alright if you guys have such a problem with this then just shut your mouth and have a mod delete/lock it rather than being jerks. I really wanted to use more offensive words other than jerk but I'm trying to hold back..
Good god I see why many developers are leaving this site. It's people like you.
You really make this site harder to come to. Just the thought of reading comments like yours makes me not even want to open the app.

Prsterero,
It's not personal brother. It just makes more sense to have all the discussion in the main thread. That way you can keep everything in one place and minimize confusion.
Don't let this discourage you from xda..

No one is being a jerk. Just telling the truth. And its been stated many times its pointless. I see how you're trying to help out but it doesn't work. That's what the original thread is for. Dont take things so personal. Geez relax. And obviously its not because people like me the site is like this. Look at how many thanks I got. I actually do help people when they ask questions or need help

Only the following topics are allowed in DEVELOPMENT area:
[DEV] - Development for any special projects or Apps
[ROM] - Custom ROMs
[KERNEL] - Custom Kernels (usually found in Original Development)
[MOD] - Hack & Modifications for the phone with code only, zips go in themes and apps
[FIX] - Fixes for known issues & bugs
[R&D] - Research & Development for Devs only, when gathering data for a new projects
[HOWTO] / [GUIDE] - How to instructions and Guides (Most of the time should be in General)
Note: If you are unsure where your new topic should go, then please post it to General
I would not say that this thread is "pointless". It definitely should be in the General forum though. As the whole point to these type of threads is to separate the "general" posts away from posts that actually have to do with the development of the rom - or whatever it may be.
Take a look at the Sprint S4 forums we have [Discussion] threads for some roms and they work well at separating simple comments to posts actually pertaining to development. The development thread should be for posting bugs, clarifying problems that are directly related to the rom, etc. The discussion thread is to separate all the "great rom man thanks a bunch" "oh I really like this feature, it's cool" "man I really like this rom over Z rom" "anyone find some cool wallpapers that match the theme of the rom", out of the development thread to allow the developers to actually identify and deal with the issues instead of being cluttered by useless/developmentally insignificant posts.
