There seems to be confusion about posting ROMs in General or Developers section. I just reported a post and fjasked that a "stock" ROM be moved from the Dev section to the General section because recently another Stock ROM was in fact moved with the reason that all stock ROMs belong in General. The response to my report was "this is a tough call I ll move it but it could stay in dev". So, that is a very non-committal answer from a mod. In addition, this post, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184817, is an example of previous guidance on the subject. It clearly states that the Dev section is "only meant for very advanced technical discussion directly related to ROM development activity and the delivery of actual ROMs and ROM components ONLY". I would agree with this guidance. Can we stop differentiating between stock and no-stock ROMs and place ALL ROMs in the Dev section, as stated in the above guidance? Thank you for you work and time. XDA is a great place. I am not whining or complaining. I am merely asking for clarification of this issue so we can move on.
sec
um, your "question" for clarification belongs in the Q section. Not General.
Also, reading the Dev section I think it is pretty clear that it is for rom development only.
Stock roms aren't development...in this case it's a link to a leaked rom. that's it...doesn't belong in development.
So, if the Mod moved it to General it was done correctly.

I been on here for some time across at least 6 phones, and I've never heard of such or seen this done.
It should be like how normal 90% of XDA works!
ROM/Kernels in Dev no matter if its stock or custom! That's it no argument! I had only three phone couple of tablets but whatever forum i went to. THis is the theory they followed! Very simple idk what's big deal about it! IDK why this ppl don't like that!

Your first sentence made me lol. You're right but I thought maybe since it was asking about the General then it could go in the General. Maybe it will be moved. Whatever.
Your second point is the crux of my question. If you read the guidance that I referenced it does not discriminate against stock ROMs. All ROMs are development, as are all kernels and other code. Code can be developed, whether it is stock code or other. Or at least that what I think.
I am anxious to see what the Moderators have to say. They have been very quiet on this issue.

I agree with you, I've been here a while , thru a span of of six devices forums myself also(htc excalibur-tmo dash/htc tilt-kaiser/htc fuze-raphael/the first android OG "htc dream-Tmobile G1"/htc leo/hd2) and now here and all roms have always been in the rom development section, even stock roms that serve as base for custom roms are part of development .
I have been frequenting this site since my PPC6600 and all ROMs official or otherwise have been in a development section of some type. That goes back 5 + years (a very long time in tech years)
I don't know if that means anything to anyone, but us old guys don't like change =P.

Stock ROMs belong in General according to the rules. Not sure if they are enforced or not though.
I dunno why they changed the rule. Is it specific for AT&T Galaxy Note or in general? Because at least Captivate/i9000/i9100 section have 'stock ROM list' sticky on development section.

Leaked ROMs are still not something you made thus you aren't developing them, thus why would the go in development? I understand why people would want to put them there, but according to the rules, its not where they belong.
I really can't stand this! IF you really want to get this changed plz comment and let me know! Because i just don't like how this is going!

ACTUALLY
ACTUALLY, this post doesn't belong in Q&A...
It belongs in the MAIN GENERAL section... I'm just saying...
LOL
but yeah, the idea is stupid. they should change the rules...
Lol, who the hell cares? Just post it in one of the two and if a mod feels like moving it, let him. Personally I think any rom of any type should all go in one section so they're easy to find... but I'm not gonna cry about it if the mod wants it in general.

Am I understanding this correctly? I need to post 10 times in General or Q/A before I can post in Development thread?
I don't have any Q/A posts to create other than this and I don't have any general questions.
All I wanted to do was post to a thread that the Kernel is running great and no issues so far.
The only question I have is the following:
Should I post then new posts that are useless to get my count up
or
Post back to this thread I created 10 times?
I am leaning toward the latter but before I do I want to make sure I do not get anyones panties in a bunch. If this is an issue I'll just leave it as is and stick to reading.

From my understanding of this forum, this isn't like other forums where you would post all questions and comments that are related to development in the development section. Since this is xda-DEVELOPERS they seem to assume that all questions are going to be related to development.
So all regular comments go in the General section, and all Questions go in the Q&A section. I believe they want you to post in the dev section only if you are developing something (a kernal, a rom, a mod like CWM).
If you want to report success on a specific rom or kernel, couldn't you just hit "reply" in the thread for that kernel? That's what I usually do.
Also, this will probably keep you from getting griped at by lots and lots of wannabe moderators (in addition to the real moderators).
Yea I know how u feel I'm on number 4 I think so this will be 5 half way there.

Questions belong in Q&A. Questions/problems on a specific ROM/KERNEL/MOD in the development forum belong in the thread related to what you have the question/problem with, not in a new topic. The development forum is for releases of stuff only, along with discussion in the same thread about said releases.
thanks for the clarification. one of these days i will get my 10 post in to thank all the hard working developers

Same here I was going to post in the developers kernel thread to provide feedback as it was new and they look for feedback.
This rule I can understand for new posts but for replying to existing posts I don't understand other than the fact you get a lot of people that post in wrong places all the time. However this will happen with this rule in place or not as they can reach ten posts pretty quickly.
Either way just found it an odd rule. Some forums do a "you must be a member for X days before you can post". This rule allows new members to do reading before they just start posting all over the joint. That one I understand.

Devs do check out the Q/A and general section too, so you dont have to post in their thread if you have a problem.
One good thing regarding the 10 post is that people wont post a thread with a question in the development section. A lot of people who accidentally post there says that their question has to do with development, and so they decided to post there instead of Q/A or general section. If people with a lot of posts still does this, by accident or not, imagine how much work mods will have to do if anyone can post there and is new to the forum.

Anyone care to discuss?

Should be in general not development
i only put it here because in "general" this would more directly impact "development", target audience and all.....i suppose they can move if they like, but just so you know, i did ponder that for a minute..

I personally think if its a development related discussion it belongs here. Not to say this post has any direct relation to "current development" There doesn't have to be a zip or a side load or a script to be a development related post.
Maybe our development sections (for all devices) should have restricted access to post unless the mods deem the memeber a developer. Read/write and read only type scenario. :-/

I don't own a tbolt but seems to be a lot of talk on the 4g not playing to nice. Think it was acting like wifi when it couldn't get a good 4g connection, trying, failing, reverting to 3g, then repeating. Again don't have one so just repeating what others have said, i'm sure theres lots on the sit in the tbolt forum. Whatever the exact issue is, its most likely centered on the lte radio.
Nice article. Relates directly to the biggest issue of all android devices. Good performance = bad battery. This helps clarify that. KEEP IN ANDROID [email protected]!

Maybe there needs to be a separate section for "Releases" then if this article honestly really ruined you visit like Spam. Where do people discuss development issues if not in the development section? This section like you pointed out is where everyone comes to get the latest rom or kernel. Seems to me that warrants its own Release section.....oh wait....that's why the mods asked those types of threads to be titled specifically in a format that makes that obvious. Then the discussion threads could co-exist in the same section without being considered "Spam"

It is a good article and it is development related. Just because its not a rom, kernel zip, script, apk or system dump doesn't disqualify it from the development forum.
(Though android general may have been a better option as stated previously.)

yeah if there was a "development discussion" section that would be best....as if all the articles available out that could be posted like this to foster discussion ended up in here.......well it would really clutter stuff up
my own personal opinion (and its not worth anything) is that the development section is best served as a release...and discussion of said release...section...i mean thats what 95% of us treat it as...and have been accustomed to having it as such
Been working on a build of CM7 - got my laptop back up and running and thought I'd tackle this. Last night I started the build and woke up this morning to this:
make: *** No rule to make target `vendor/samsung/c1-common/proprietary/BCM4330B1_002.001.003.0128.0162.hcd', needed by `out/target/product/galaxys2att/system/bin/BCM4330B1_002.001.003.0128.0162.hcd'. Stop.
Any idea how to get passed this? From the looks of it, I was close to the end of the build process

Debugging a compiler error isn't development? Perhaps the so called development forums are becoming too focused on showing off wares, with little or no attention being paid to actually developing?
At first he was asking a question about decompiling. Since he answered his own questions, I threw it in General. Since he is not offering a rom/kernel/tool then this does not belong in the Dev section.

Exactly, it is a question so it would belong in the Q/A sections not the development section. This stuff isn't new, read the forum rules. Quite simple to understand if you ask me.

Actually, it is not his opinion, it is xda rules. The only posts in the development boards, are posts discussing actual development. If the post is a question, it has no business being on the development board. Examples of acceptable dev topics:
Release of a new/updated rom
Release of a new/updated kernel
Release of a new/updated hardware specific patch
Release of a new/updated hardware specific app
*Technical * discussion of ongoing hardware /software development (rooting, bootloader, etc). Asking when root wil be available is not technical.
If your title for a post is in the form of a basic question, it does not belong in development, period.
I have to play devils advocate... but with the understanding that I'm doing just that and not really arguing...
I posed a similar question to Red in a PM. If I have a question asking how I can Retro fit Samsung propriatary shared libs into a new program I'm writing, or where I might find headers for those libs, where does that question go? Its certainly technical and development related... it also doesn't seem to fit in the q&a subforum (which doesn't seem to have any dev questions but is more general.)
Yet, its a question, and doesn't belong in the "development" subforum under a strict interpretation of the rules (which seems to say that the dev forum is only used to advertise mods, roms, etc)
Red suggested the q&a subforum. I disagree, but he is a moderator.
Not being sarcastic here, but perhaps we really do need new subforums for posting links to the result of development and allow the development subforums to go back to discussing that and other development. (Or vice versa) long ago when I first joined xda, discussing development was encouraged (and the primary purpose of xda-DEVELOPERS.)

I understand how you feel and would love it myself but at this point and time with the influx of Soo many non tech minded people that don't know the diff Between a normal question and a development related question that all questions are pointed to the Q&A.
!Please read this before posting in the Rezound development section!
I know this has been stated a thousand times before, but the mass number of posts in in the development section that are not development is getting out of hand.
THE DEVELOPMENT SECTION IS FOR DEVELOPMENT ONLY. If you are posting something that others may use regarding development such as a new ROM, kernel, guide, mod, recovery, or tool, it will be posted there. If in doubt, just post in the general section. Our moderator will move the post if it should be in the development section. Please do not post questions/concerns in the Android Development section.
THE Q&A SECTION IS FOR YOUR QUESTIONS REGARDING DEVELOPMENT. If you are going to post a question about development, it goes in the Q&A section. If you have a question about accessories or themes/apps, post your question there if you like. If you have a question regarding a particular part of development such as a current ROM or kernel, you can post in that particular thread to see if you can get some help. So if you are using Ziggy's kernel, you could ask a question in that thread. DO NOT POST A NEW THREAD FOR A QUESTION IN THE DEVELOPMENT SECTION.
THE GENERAL SECTION IS FOR EVERYTHING THAT DOES NOT FIT INTO THE OTHER CATEGORIES. If you have anything else that you would like to talk about that is not a question, accessory, theme/app, or method of development, you will want to post it in General. If you post a question in General (even though it should go in the new Q&A Section), you probably won't get yelled at. You will, though, if you post in the Development Section when you should not.
Please try to keep the development section clear and clean for the developers who will be giving us amazing ROMs and kernels to play with on our newly rooted/unlocked phones. This will make it much easier for us to find them in the future.
The funny thing is that this thread should actually go in development... And be stickied
I was going to post something similar, but it looks as though I don't need to

Ha, I know it should. But that would be kind of hypocritical. If a mod wants to, they can move it. As long as people read it and don't post in the dev section, I'll be happy
I feel like xda sub forums are lacking in some extra boards. Questions and guides need to be added to all the sub forums.

Yes, some extra boards would be nice. This will have to do for now, though.
I quit posting in peoples threads and just report all of them. I am sick of telling people so I just click report every time. No one will learn man. This thread will be burried too. I PM'ed the MODS to get a possible warning thread before allowing to post in Development. Haven't heard anything back.

Do you know how much more there would be to moderate if they gave EVERY device extra subforums? I think they tend to do a pretty good job of adding a q&a(or whatever is needed) section when it becomes necessary due to a device becoming more popular. I'm betting the rezound will be getting one now that its unlocked and development has taken off.

As is stated, do not post your questions in development forum. Before you start a new thread ask yourself this: "is what I'm posting a rom or a kernel?" or "is this a guide for development?"
If it is none of those, then post it in another forum.
Thanks..
Dude, finally! Thank you!

Yes we need a Q/A thread like the Evo 3D has. Then people can ask questions about development and devs can share knowledge. It would be a really good thing to have. Sorta surprised that this forum lacks a Q/A sub forum.

How about flashable mods like my status bar mod and lllboredlll power menu mod?
Its technically development although not a ROM or kernel but does not really fit in the themes and apps forum.

Main post edited to reflect mods and recoveries.
BUMP Because no one seems to read this and they should. It would help. We need to keep the dev section clear.

Good thread. Thank you for this. The more people that come to the Rezound forum, the more chaotic the threads become. I'm new to Rezound, but I promise to post in the proper section. Always a good reminder!
By the way - GO RAYS!!

* wrong thread, my bad *
Hey all,
As some of you have probably noticed by now, we have a new Development section for original works. As explained in the portal article Introducing the Original Development Forums, these forums were found to be very useful in other sections and there has been a lot of requests to add them for more devices.
Please refer to the article for general guidelines on what is and isn't appropriate to post there, and if you have any questions feel free to ask in this thread or to PM any of the moderators about it.
Those using Tapatalk or the XDA app will probably need to refresh the forums list in order to see it. You can do this by going to the base forum view that list all of the different devices and refreshing or by unsubscribing and then resubscribing to this section.
Thank you for addressing our request
Who would I need to bring a list of those original development threads that still remain in the Android Development forum that need to transfer here?
-Neo
EDIT:
The following fall under the guidelines of First for the device/official/or heavily modified original kernel work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911297
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2074906
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1659210
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2071043
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2079282
It may take some time to sort through everything, but the best way to let us know is to PM one of us.
edit: Unless I'm missing something the MIUI and AOKP threads aren't even GPL compliant?

Busted!
Added to my signature thanks.
he didnt know where to put it. give him a break
I have moved a large amount of threads over to the Original Dev section. This mainly consisted of cm10/cm9/aokp/kernel threads that were source built. Please PM me or any other mod if you think your thread should be moved as well.
gotta say. you mods rock. thank you for everything you do.
I almost had a heart attack because I couldn't find my CyanogenMod mega threads!
Thought I was going to be banned or something.

Ok, this explains a lot. I thought I was going nuts for a sec.
i wish we had a poll asking if we wanted this, iv always been agianst separating dev section, for the same thing, this just alienated and confuses the users.
I tend to agree with siul.
Do you know how much extra work is to have three main folders to check under each device? General / Development (read ROMS that are cool but came from another device) / and Original Development (ROMS that are still based on others work but have been tweaked/setup somewhat uniquely.)
Honest to God, those were my reactions. So I know where siul is coming from...how is MIUI in a different thread than AOKP? If you add a few apps that look different and don't ship with AOKP, is that suddenly original?
Again, not trying to start drama but just my two cents.
EDIT: Just read the whole justification for this. I get it, but still think it's another layer of stuff to sort through.
Bad idea change thing back to the old ways Please
This is bad Mostly for the user who are new i seen the other forum that are like this, not a good i idea doing this plus the developer hate going to one forum to the other just to set thing straight

Not really. I am not sure how my CM threads fall into original development.

Because all are built from source by the person posting them and not a rom modified from someone else's. It falls under the original development guidelines that are posted in the op of this thread.

I don't see how this works then, because none of my roms are based on someone else's work. and if what you say was true, then all aosp roms compiled from chad's git should be placed on the general dev section instead of the "original dev section" since everyone's aosp rom is based on his work(compiling it docent make it your work). And please understand im just trying to make a point here, no trying to be an ass or anything. i just hate the idea of roms being divided by 2 different dev sections. its just prone to confusion.

That's what I think. All of the AOSP ROMs built from Chad's git are not original unless chad himself released a ROM.

I think this new thread splt is to confusing. Now I have to check two places. Please revert to back

I don't take your response to that effect in any way and no intent to malice received.
"The following are most likely not “Original Development”, and should be posted in the “Android Development” subforum:
Your own “unofficial” stock build of your favourite original, source-built (or otherwise) ROM, particularly where an official or maintainer-endorsed thread exists already."

This plainly states that the self compiled roms belong on the Android Development forum so I side with you in that aspect. However, there is no official or maintainer version of CyanogenMod roms or AOKP thread available so unless Chad uploads his build in this forum as he rightfully could, these builds (from what I understand) can and should be posted here.
