[Guide] Rooting Your Dell Streak

I take absolutely no credit for anything in here. I am simply re-posting the guide developed by Paul O'Brien at Modaco since I figured it will be a valuable resource for new and old members alike. Without further ado, I give you Paul's Streak Rooting Guide:
Introducing.... Superboot!
Superboot is a boot.img that when flashed, will root your device the first time you boot (installing su and the superuser APK by ChainsDD). No need to flash the system partition, no need to use ADB, no messing with the contents of your data partition, no overwriting the shipped ROM on your device, just flash the boot image using the instructions below and you're done!
The story behind this superboot is a little bit different to what has gone before... normally a Superboot is created based on a leaked ROM, but this wasn't possible on the Streak. What happened in this case is that I managed to find an exploit to give me root, which in turn allowed me to dump the device to images and create a Superboot image. This can be flashed because the Streak has a relatively open bootloader. This is pretty handy because it means that I don't have to reveal the root exploit... potentially saving it for further down the line if Dell choose to lock down the device a bit more.
APPLY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Before download, you should check your device 'about' screen to determine which build number you are running. Although the Superboot may work on other builds than that for which it was designed, I cannot guarantee that!
Superboot (tested on build 3883) - DOWNLOAD (MediaFire Pro) / MIRROR (ROMraid / CoBlitz) - MD5: 110e69808dc5145d1d0fca80f0d9ecb5
How to use Superboot - Windows, Linux and OSX
- Download the Superboot zip file above and extract to a directory
- Put your device in bootloader mode - Unplug the device from your PC, remove the device battery, then replace it and turn device on with the camera button pressed. Select the 'fastboot' text on the top right, wait around 10 seconds then plug the device into your PC. The screen display should change to 'FASTBOOT MODE'. If it doesn't, repeat and retry (it's a bit temperamental!)
- WINDOWS - double click 'install-superboot-windows.bat'
- MAC - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type 'chmod +x install-superboot-mac.sh' followed by './install-superboot-mac.sh'
- LINUX - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type 'chmod +x install-superboot-linux.sh' followed by './install-superboot-linux.sh'
Note: Be careful what you do now you have root! We don't as yet have a recovery image or recovery flash (but will soon), so if you badly break it, you might have to wait for a bit.
That's it, job done! Enjoy!
P
PS Although the Superboot image is 'insecure', the Streak seems to be blocking 'adb remount'. I am looking into this now, but in the interim you can remount system by using 'adb shell, 'su' then 'mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock6 /system'.

Cheers for the post bra!
Fantastic
Glad this root was nothing like the X10, Paul got it within a day I think.
Looking forward to flashing new ROMs!

no..
you need to get your head around how linux works really to understand this.
there's various degrees of permission granted to "users" to do various things (such as access parts of the operating system or file system)
Root is the boss, or "superuser" and has access to all these.
most devices don't come "rooted" because of a)potential security breaches b)you can mess up the device if you start mucking about too much
this is from the first g1 so is a bit old now, but the theory is relevant

SuperBoot - SuperQuick
This is an awesome root method, by far the fastest root i have done on any of my devices. I think the most difficult was trying to root my Magic [with perfect SPL on 1.6] which took me around 6 weeks of trying. This method took around fifteen minutes to make sure I had the correct drivers then 'click' and youre rooted.
Looks like this still isnt in the states yet so rom production will be slow to start with.
But hey - ROOT!!

Hmmm, thats a good question. There is an option to check for updates in the 'about' section of the settings and it seems to work still. Working as in its telling me my device us still running dated firmware.

If this is the same as the Nexus One... if you have a modified recovery then you wont be able to install the OTA update.

So when we hear that an OTA update is coming we need to go back to stock recovery? Or stock recovery and stock [unrooted] ROM?
Confirming Dell Streak US [AT&T] Works!!!
Guys,
Just wanted everyone to know that I have successfully rooted my AT&T Dell Streak [US] using the method posted at the begining of the thread. However, I used the r2-4399-streak-superboot.zip found here: http://android.modaco.com/content/d...-4399-how-to-root-your-dell-streak-superboot/
Now all I need to do is figure out how to get 2.1 working on my Streak

LED Always On
Rooted my Streak as above. The LED behavior has changed. The LEDs now flash during activity and the menu LED remains on even when on battery and the display shut off. Any one else see this one and/or have suggestions? Thanks!
Also experiencing light flashing after rooting
The button illumination has changed to oscillate between the middle and bottom buttons when there's activity.
Anyone else seeing this after rooting?

I found a post (search with Dogpile for "rooting the us streak") which detailed how to open device manager, select update driver, and select options to change the driver. This driver may be in the superboot file you have already downloaded. Anyway, once I changed the driver, it worked. (although I have the changed LED behavior detailed above. Do the web search and you'll find the post quickly. Hope this helps!

[Q] I want to root for 1st time ever, but I have a Mac

I am here today because I need help. I want to root for 1st time ever, but I have a Mac. I hear about all of the great things I can do with my Vibrant after rooting but I am scared of trying this without a PC. Can anyone lead me in the right direction? Also lead me to the best roms. Thank you.
Well my first suggestion would be to get a PC
But seriously, you could always get a copy of XP somewhere (pretty easy to get for free), or a later Windows OS and dual-boot your system.
Or you could just dl Ryanza's lag fix from the market and root it that way.
You do not need a pc.
Download the file to your phone, put it on the root sdcard/ and go into stock recovery and flash it.
Afterwards, get rom manager and make a backup.
Flash a rom, bionix or eugene's
This is all in the general section sticky I made. EVERYTHING you need is there.

Take a look at this post. I would recommend you pull the latest version, su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip, from this thread instead of "SGH-959 Root Update.zip" from the 1st link.

I have taken your advice but my phone has only installed the Superuser app. I am scared that if I do anything else I will brick my phone. Is there a way to unroot it? I would like to try rooting again with the non PC version. Thank you
Download rom manager
Flash clockwork recovery
make a nandroid backup.
Now you have something you can always revert to.

Yes sir, that's exactly what you should have after successfully completing the process. To unroot from your device take a look here. View the Full thread (Page 1) to perform via adb. I don't see any reason you need to worry yourself about bricking. Unless your planning on testing kernels, ROMs, etc... If that's the case, make sure you read the entire thread before you make any decisions, and ask questions as it seems that most everyone here is willing to lend a hand.
search ryanza on market place. download the free version you can root and unroot from there simple instructions very easy to understand.
download rom manager (it auto installs superuser also) from market place also free download. that will allow you to make backups and restore should you encounter any problems.
also if your running OSX you can dual boot from Bootcamp windows, and if your running atleast a core 2 duo system you can dual boot windows 7/Vista 64bit.
A pc is needed for almost no modification when it comes to this phone.
I had to put effort into bricking my phone so you should be fine, just make sure if you have installed the OTA that any themes you install support the JI6 update. thats the only way i bricked my phone lol, and again that was a easy fix. Read read read so much to learn.
Thank you everyone for your help. I have succesfully rooted my phone. I think I will wait for the 2.2 OTA update since I hear that they are slowing coming around for the galaxy S phones. I want to try the bionix rom but I do not want to install it to soon and miss out on my chance to get the OTA update.

[Q] Planning on rooting, have a few ques

Hey guys
I have a lgp500 phone and i am thinking of rooting my phone, as i hate the touchscreen bug that makes the cpu go 100%, soo laggy
anyways i have a few questions that i would like to know about rooting before i attempt it.
firstly ill start by listing my phone software etc
Android version - 2.2.1
Kernal Version - 2.6.32.9
Build Number - FRG83
Software Version - V10b-DEC-13-2010
and now my questions
1. Well the most obvious question. Is it possible to root my phone?
2. My main ques - What are the chances of bricking my phone? as in to a point that would leave my phone completely useless.
3.At what steps of the rooting process can the phone be bricked?
4. How does rooting work? - basically i just want to learn about everything so i know how the system works and how kernal etc work - so that i wont do anything stupid when im rooting
for now thats all, but ill probly have a alot more once i get answers to these
please help
thanks
first of all u will need to downgrade to android 2.2.then u can root it and enjoy!

At the downgrade, when you have to flash the phone with a different Android version using an application that sometimes fails. But that's rare.

"Rooting" simply gives various applications wider system rights, so that they are able to perform actions otherwise forbidden, such as messing with system settings and allowing critical system files to be modified or deleted. It also is an important step needed if you decide to install a custom ROM -- a modified and (usually) improved version of Android.
Rooting is not for the faint of the heart
However, keep in mind that you can find all the help you need on this forums...

about the chances on bricking my phone, i understand they are small
but approximately how small? like a number?
i understand its different for each phone, so how much would it be for my phone?
Well it depends on how well you read and follow the instructions.
I have installed Custom ROMs on a total of 3 phones with 100% success.
And in short Rooting is like being Administrator in Windows, you can do anything you feel like doing, even if that means bricking your device.

It's not the phone it's usually the user. You should never attempt to mess with something unless you know what you're doing. Take that from someone who actually bricked his phone by not knowing enough.
Best advice against bricking is never try to flash something that's not meant for your specific device.
And if you wanna put a number on it post your IQ.
Ahmmm... i just used z4root and in just one click, im already rooted. Very easy XD. The part where you should be cautious about is flashing back to android 2.2 that is where a lot of p500 get brick. Just read the forums more.

@OP, just take note of the important steps & thing you should check before proceeding like turning LG modem off in device manager. though my friends have downgraded even without checking that option, its always better to follow the instruction to be safe.
& also after rooting, take your time when installing custom recovery. it is also responsible for bricking quite a few mobiles. i'll advice copy paste the commands to avoid any typo.

Update Dell Venue to Android 2.3.3

Did anyone tried to upgrade to 2.3.3 using these instruction - w w w.venusvenera.com/2011/05/how-to-upgrade-update-dell-venue-to_1886.html
The Dell Venue owners may also want to keep their smartphones up-to-date. So we thought of giving you a tutorial of how to upgrade Dell Venue to Android 2.3.3.
But prior to telling you how to install Android 2.3.3 on Dell Venue, let’s see what do you want in order to be able to perform the installation. You will have to download 2.3.3 Dell Venue port. You will also have to root your Dell Venue to prepare it for Android 2.3.3 upgrade.
Here are the download links of the files you want to updatre Dell Venue to Android 2.3.3 - 4shared.com/file/-388kF2Q/hc_NS_test-81.html
Just before beginning to upgrade your Dell Venue to Android 2.3.3 don’t forget to backup your information, as contacts, text messages and the apps installed from Android Marketplace Location who may be lost when the installation finishes.
Now let’s see how to update Dell Venue to Android 2.3.3 :
1. Install the ROM Manager on your Dell Venue. Get it from Android Marketplace Location, then install the clockwork mod recovery.
2. Connect your Dell Venue to your PC employing the USB information cable. Copy the “hc_NS_test-8.1.zip” file you downloaded to the SD memory card
3. Restart your device in the recovery mode using ROM Manager. As soon as in Recovery Mode, go to ROM Manager and select backup / restore to back-up your information.

There's a strong possibility it's a fake
the build.prop reports it's a it's either an emulator image or a nexus S image, it also says it's a HC 3.0 rom.
Definitely isnt based on any venue rom at all.
You can try it but as it's difficult to recover venues as there's little modding support you're basically on your own if something goes wrong.
I would recommend against it unless you're on 319 and dont care about losing all your data
I wouldn't trust it. I have been hunting and looking everywhere for a possible update, with no luck. If there was one to show up, I am sure it would end up on xda somewhere.

I rooted it with Gingerbreak apk then installed clockwork mod, then I made nand backup before the upgrade.
Omnichron, Is the upgraded version working good without any issues ?
Search for "hc_NS_test-81" on Google, it seems this file upgrades:
Nexus S to Honeycomb 3.0
LG Alley to Gingerbread 2.3
Sony Ericsson W8 to Honeycomb 3.0
Samsung Captivate to Honeycomb 3.1
Xperia X10 to Gingerbread 2.3.3
Motorola Milestone to Gingerbread 2.3.3
Samsung Showcase i500 to Froyo 2.2
Samsung Moment to Gingerbread 2.3.4
and now
Dell Venue to Gingerbread 2.3.3, 2.3.4, or 3.1 (search "hc_NS_test-81 venue")
Looks like just wishful thinking to me.
As I previously mentioned it seems to be a fake, but noone's stopping you from trying it/bricking your phone.
I'm also confused on what the previous poster's phone is, as it's not a venue(?). Seeing as the venue hasnt ever had clockwork ported to it.
If it did then it's doing a great job hiding in plain sight as noone ever mentioned anywhere about having ported clockwork, much less setting it up to be served by rom manager (it takes a couple extra unrelated steps to set up)
No Way
Without a verified version of Clockwork out for the Venue, no way I am touching this one with a 10 foot pole.

That's what I was wondering.
One suggestion , there's a app named root tool box pro , it needs root access, and can flash recovery . make back up of recovery, wipe caches , Battery stats, fix market link, tweak sdcard speed, md5 sum fix, remove system app, and many more , checkout on market , if someone needs this app pro version and don't want to spend money on it let me know I have it and will share.

Rooting is similar to Jailbreaking but not exactly the same, I would recommend taking a look at this article on the benefits of rooting and what rooting is all about. All Android devices are rootable some are easier to root then others with a variety of factors contributing to this such as firmware version, locked vs. unlocked bootloader (Separate from rooting but having an unlocked bootloader makes it easier to design root exploits and employ certain rooting methods), and whatever other OEM specific security measures have been put in place. I would recommend taking a look at towelroot to root your device. As far as voiding your warranty technically rooting does void your warranty, though un-rooting and restoring your device to original (Or as close to original condition as possible) will make it difficult for the manufacturer to ever tell you rooted your device. Let me know if you still have questions I'll be happy to help you out.

With rooting you are always taking a risk, however that risk is usually quite minimal nowadays with most of the procedures used. That being said whatever rooting procedure or app you use make sure you read and re-read (And re-read a third time) the instructions about it's proper use.

Your device is now rooted, which Superuser application do you have installed? I am semi familiar with ASUS devices, regarding the problem with the 2 notifications did this problem occur before you rooted the device?
