[Q] placing lead tape to boost weight - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I just had a thought about using some lead tape I use to boost weight of my tennis racquets to boost weight of the vibrant. I hate how the vibrant feels kinda cheap and hope adding some weight to it would make it feel a lil better. Would using the lead tape interfere with reception either cellular or gps?

Okay I am not trying to flame or be rude, but how does the vibrant feel cheap ?
Is it because it doesn't weigh that much ? The vibrant in my opinion does not feel cheap and most people prefer a lighter phone. Why would you want to add weight to something that is slim lined on purpose ? Do you really want to carry around a brick in your pocket ? Yes to answer your question, the tape would probably interfere with at least your cell signal, I don't know about the gps signal though. I personally think that this is a terrible idea. To each their own I guess though.

So not only will it feel cheap but hey now your really gonna make it look cheap lol

I agree with 1 part about the OP though.
The phone DOES look like it was made out of fully plastic... and thats why it looks.. cheap!
I mean look at ATT's Galaxy S ( was it the captivate? )
It has a hard matte cover, and it feels good to carry around...
Also HOW would it interfear with signal? If that were true, wouldn't it do the same with other bulky cases?
Then it would have bad signal, but with my case nothing like that happens... so idk

I'm pretty sure lead tape would kill your signal. After all, dentists and doctors give you lead filled aprons when you take x-rays, for the purpose of blocking the radiation.

Is your case made out of lead? It's got nothing to do with the bulkiness, it's the material.

Sorry sorry sorry!
Missed the lead part read right through it!

I suppose this would also give your phone added protection against superman.
Anyways, the lead tape would be likely to give you signal trouble, but play around with the placement and you should be able to find a way to make it do-able.
This is a pretty neat Idea, I might give it a shot myself, just for fun.

Ok so personally I think it's too light. I prefer some weight to my phones. Lets be honest here..people want a metal backed or mix of metal/plastic back. There was a thread about someone making them here. Also as was mentioned look at the captivate that feels so much more solid. As for the lead tape have you seen them before? Its relatively thin and I would be sticking them on the inside of the battery cover not on the outside. I have some cheapo battery covers from ebay I'll try it on. I'll report back if people are interested.

It'll ruin your signal, but your phone will survive significant levels of radiation!

There are some aftermarket back covers made of metal that make the phone feel more rigid and so if that's is a concern then go buy one of those.
As far as weight, the phone is engineered so well and to be this light is a real accomplishment. Nice to have a phone that is 50% lighter than my last, don;t need a boat anchor in my pocket.
As far as the lead goes unless it is actually covering up the antenna, lead will not hurt reception. People get confused about the difference between x-rays waves and radio waves.............

Tilt 2, Why So Thick HTC!

If you take the battery cover off you will see the the tilt 2, touch pro2 is not really thick at all. Htc just simply does not know how to design with THIN in mind. The seem to just about alwats miss the mark in COVER design.
If some manufaturer would make a slimmer solution to cover the back they would make some good cash!
Right now I'm making some sort of "cover" to keep me from returning the tilt. Im right now using it with no cover at all AND I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
I mean take the cover off and hold it, fells GOOD doesnt it? Slide the screen up and use it, feels FANTASTIC. And it looks slim as well.

Battery Cover Question
Anyone Know If The Battery Covers Between All Of The Touch Pro 2's Are Interchangeable? I Have A Tilt 2 And I Lost My Battery Cover... I Dont See Any On Ebay... Anyone Have Any Ideas?
I don't know man, I just took my cover off and it looks as though the difference in thickness is about the thickness of the cover. I held it in my hand with it on and off and it feels about that different. I don't see where having the cover off makes any functional difference.

I have a tp2, also saw the tilt2. the battery cover on the tilt looks very different, and yes, the battery cover for the tilt2 makes it look bulkier. the cover for the tp2 is basically a lightly bevelev flat piece of plastic. the total thikness of the cover is maybe 4 or 5 mm.
The one thing about the T-Mobile USA version I like, The battery cover is slim & don't cover the MicroSD Slot, plus the stylus doesn't go through it.
EDIT: Oh, btw, in the future please post in the correct forum. This has nothing to do with ROM Development. There are plenty of threads about cases/housings/battery covers/etc in the Rhodium accessories section where this belongs.

Speaking of, working on porting T-Mobiles MyFaves App. Have it ported & working, just the TF3D page won't show, no point releasing it till I can figure that out. I have all the _manila files (I think) & it still doesn't show.
wrong forum but yea. I don't really feel the difference. I like the way it is. It's not thick at all to me. It's just right.
LOL at the OP. The battery cover is NOT thick and adds 1mm at most (not 4 or 5 as someone else said). Unless the AT&T one is different from all the others (wasn't mentioned in the reviews), in which case blame AT&T not HTC.
Also, it's going to be really funny when you activate your moisture sensors and short out your battery while using your phone with your cover off, all so your phone is 1mm thinner. I'd go ahead and put that cover back on right now before you can't return it anymore.

No no nooo, It's not just about a mm, its about design.
The plastic is probably about a mm thick BUT the ALL AROUND desing is just more bulky than it needs to be.
For those of you that say you can see or feel any difference, do you have a chunky wife? Just kidding, but really, how could you not feel or see any difference?. Maybe you guys are just use to thick phones from htc. And since they are making them a LITTLE slimmer these days you guys are just happy.
But I have a 3gs and putting one in each hand you can see and feel the bluk.
But, like you guys, I love my tilt 2!
Btw, thanks to the guy who posted the website that sells the battery cover! Going to have to buy one just to mess with it and make it slimmer. I can always make it fit the tilt if its made for some other carrier.
Oh for crying out loud... make your peace with it. I can't believe we're actually having a discussion about this. You must have really tiny hands if you can feel whatever difference you are talking about.

You seem to forget there is one HUGE, GLARING, PINK ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM difference, we have a sliding hardware keyboard. If the Iphone had a sliding keyboard, it would be "bulkier." Some people are ok with the software keyboard, i am not, and never have been. My fingers are no where close to dainty. So having a hardware keyboard is a must, plus I actually can compose full emails and correct my mistakes quickly which i think is the biggest problem with a software keyboard.
I'm actually quite pleased with the form factor of the Tilt 2. I wasn't expecting it to be thinner than the Tilt, somehow I missed that in the reviews and specs. I was expecting something somewhat big and bulky, and was actually quite impressed with how slim and sexy it feels.
I don't have a TP2 to compare. But the Tilt 2 feels good to me. Similar to previous responses, I don't see how they could really have slimmed down all that much, at all. Cover off is really not any thinner than cover on.
Comparing the Tilt2 to a iPhone is ridiculous. If the iPhone had a keyboard, it would obviously be thicker.
You're seriously using the phone with the battery cover off? You're just begging for the thing to become damaged.

I agree with the others above, there is not a huge difference in thickness.... a difference around the edges yes, but nothing major.
And put the case back b4 you void the warranty (ie above post, moister sensor)

Any interest in this?

My buddy has been creating molds and making true carbon fiber parts for our motorcycles. I attached a pic of a front sprocket cover he just made for his Aprilia... Anyway, I asked him if he could make a mold of a phone case, and produce some high quality, true carbon fiber cases for the Rezond, iPhone 4, etc... He said sure, he can take my case and make a mold and create a thin and incredibly strong case that would just snap on, be highly polished and look amazing.
He has not yet come up with a price, but we are thinking somewhere in the $30-$40 range once he gets the mold and process down, makes sure the fitment is perfect, gets the finish and polish perfect, etc... then he can start producing them.
I know that I have always wanted a real carbon fiber case, not that crappy plastic with the fake weave, and when I did find some they never made one for my phone and if they did, they were like $100 or something crazy...
So I ask you folks, if we could produce a really nice quality item at a really fair price, would there be enough demand to justify it? Would anyone be interested?
Here is what his sprocket cover looks like, so you can get an idea of how the finished product would look. The stuff is strong as hell, and weighs nothing, would add almost no bulk to the phone if done properly.
Thoughts?

Well, the beauty of this is that we don't need a phone to make a mold. We can take a plastic snap on case that we can buy pretty cheap, and make a mold from that, lay the kevlar weave, pour in the epoxy and vacuum seal it to impregnate the weave and remove all the air bubbles and then let it cure for 24 hours. It would be a slow process, but if the demand is there, we could make up a batch, sell them, then make another batch.
The case would have to be the single piece snap-on type. This stuff has the tensile strength of steel, so it is not going to want to bend a lot. It will have to flex slightly and snap securely on. We will play around until we get it perfect, and then show the finished product and see if people are interested.
Thanks for the feedback. If this works and he sells a decent amount, he can make different molds for different phones, shouldn't be a problem if the demand is there.

Cool. My friend Daniel is one of those guys that whatever he does, it just comes out awesome. I once needed some touch up paint done to a 2007 Ducati Monster S4RS, and in his garage he added some lines and things and it looked like a factory paint job. The guy has skills.
I got a gouge in my tank, and needed the red lines repaired, and I wanted some green added so that we would have all 3 colors of the Italian Flag on the bike, and this is what he did in his garage one day. Came out amazing looking, several layers of clear, looks like it came that way from the factory... So if he decides to do this, rest assured it will be top notch work and worth every penny.
I'm definitely in, hope this happens soon!
Thanks!

I am gonna get my plastic case to him this weekend so that he can make a mold for the Rezound. Will keep you guys posted, but it will probably take a week for the first completed unit to see the light of day, and we will see where we stand at that point.
There's a "Barley There" case that would be perfect for this. Might be cool to have a hole for the beats logo IMO. The red would add some nice contrast with carbon.
Sweet bike by the way. Looks awesome.

We will make sure that it does. The one on the bottom is open already, but we would need to make a hole to the left of the Beats logo.
We will have everything uncovered that needs to be.
I'm not a case guy but I'm getting excited about this. If the price is right and it comes out right, I could see myself getting a red one to. Now the suspense is killing me.

Or a #55 on the back in memory of Simoncelli could be cool. I wonder if a decal could be applied to the weave before putting in the epoxy? Would be cool to have things under the clear... Hmmm...
I would be very interested in a black/dark grey one. What would be even sicker is if you could replicate the plastic part of the otterbox case with carbon fiber. That would be incredible. That way it would still have the silicone inside, but the outside would be carbon fiber.
Daniel is not a member here but he is monitoring the thread. I think that making C/F parts to replace the plastic "skeleton" of things like the Otterbox is a great idea. All we would need is the plastic part to make a mold, and in some ways that might be easier to make than the standard snap on case that doesn't have the under-layer of silicone... Hmmm....

[Q] Just saw at Best Buy

It is very thin...I wonder if we will have any problem with bending or cracking the screen from bending by carrying it in your pocket??
Any thoughts??
Don't think so. Maybe if you put it in your back pocket and sit on it but its still a solid piece. When you look at the Evo 4G the phone is 2 pieces and actually has a week spot but i doubt the Note 2 would just bend or crack without considerable force. Just my opinion.
I would like to believe that this is a nonissue. Have you heard any of the OG notes breaking from being bent? Every review I have seen has said that this is a sturdy device.

No, I have not heard of any notes breaking. It just felt delicate to me...I'm sure it will be just fine. Can't wait!!
I would be very careful with this. I did see a post in another thread somewhere about a broken screen.
I work with a guy that has a Casio Commando with a broken screen. So....
Take a sheet of plastic and see how easily you can bend it. Doesn't take too much flex to break thin glass.
Anyway. If I get this, I'll for sure be looking for a sturdy case for it.

People said the same thing with the S3. Most likely because of the plastic feel.
If someone puts it in their back pocket and is well a bigger person, there is a risk or if they fall hard on their backside then that could break it.

That kind of force will likely damage any device.
I know I've read/seen reports of the S3 casing having small fractures appear that don't functionally hurt the device, but just creep you out a little...so I thought I would search for reports of similar on the Note II. I can't find any even though I was under the impression the casing is similar material.

I wouldn't do it and certainly not for aesthetic reasons. I mentioned it for those who were concerned about whether or not the phone is sturdy enough with a plastic back. I have read comments from those who have installed these aluminum backs that they did not degrade the radio signal but those were subjective opinions I'm sure.

I watched the samsung testing facility video. They bend these devices quite a bit. It wasn't in English, but it didn't need to be. Its plastic for a reason. I've had my nexus fall 3 times while running on a treadmill. Sure the battery falls out... but not a scratch on the device and works just fine still. I had a Moto Razr Maxx HD which is, well, metal. I feel like that would crack the screen if its dropped before the nexus would.
Plastic has a lot more flex to it than glass (obviously), so any slight bends to the phone shouldn't be much of an issue.

Aluminium Backcover Build - Possible or not

Hi there,
for Years i'm reading here silently and i never register myself.
I'm German and i hope that my english is well enough that you can understand my Questions.
I have a Question, not about Software for Samsung S8, so that's the Point for me to register here.
Hope that is the right Place in this Forum for my Question.
In the Future i plan to buy a S8 second hand. My Money is small so the most second hand S8 are in need of repair (Frontglas & Backcovers). Nothing what a Human with skills can handle. But i want to mod the S8 on the Side of Hardware.
Here is my Question:
Is it possible to make a Backcover from Aluminium and to use it instead of Glascover?
My thinking is to get a Originalcover and then to rebuild one from Aluminium (Thin it must be). CNC, or Lasercut for the precision.
I've googled many hours in the Hope to find something like this, but nothing.
So i want to ask you.
I think a Backcover from Alu ist not so breakable as Glas, more stable, but is it to realize without elektrical Danger to Part of the Phone.
I don't like the Cases & Bumpers & so on. I want to make my Phone more personal.
Are my thoughts crazy, or not? What do you think?
Hope my thread here is ok and do not conflict with the Forumrules. Sorry if that happens, but otherwise i will be thankfull for an answer or discussion about this Topic.
Greets to all outhere...
Interesting idea! Personally I would go with a skin like dbrand or slikwrap even if the glass is broken. Personal look and you don't lose any wireless functionality
Make sure that you remove the wireless charging coil before this!
Aluminium Backcover-Possible or not
Hi there,
i'm living in a relativ small Town in Northern Germany, but i hope i can find some
Manufacturers that can realize my idea. Maybe i must give an Order to some Firma over Google, or so.
To j91hernandez:
Can you give me eventually some links to the products. In Germany there are unknown, i think. I want to take a look on it.
I ask myself: is a Alu-BC thick enough to protect the Phone like the Glas-BC?
Or must can i use a Metall-BC instead Alu? I don't know.
The other thing is: you must remove the Original-BC to apply the, maybe stronger, Mod-BC. But if the S8 has no Guarantee you can make it like you wish.
Glas-Cover looks great, but i've seen so much broken S8s to buy in Ebay-Second Hand Shop, so i wondering, why nobody change the BC of the Phone to avoid the use of Cases, etc.
With a well designed Metall / Alu-BC it must be better, i think. Maybe you can make it less slippery for your Hands, too.
But: is there Dangers for electrical Parts of the Phone, i mean short circuit between Parts? In wich Way it affects the NFC Functions, etc.?
Maybe try & error! I'm willing to do so if i have the Money to buy a S8. So i try to get any Infos about that Projectidea.

That's a Point! The Function of the Phone shall be at 100%, so i think i must look and read about Phones with Metall-BC AND Wireless Charging how they doing it.
There would be a chance the metal backing by witch one would have to possibly custom make curves and all. But may dampen WiFi bluetooth and wireless signals. Anything other than plastic glass or aluminum I would imagine would interfere with wireless charging as well. Absorbing or warping the magnetic field
But I would say if a man could bend the edges properly a hand held rotary tool would more than likely suffice to do all edging and cutouts for various sensors. I have had to make due with home made metal object before but precision be on this is a must. As water resistance is more than like gone with the wind on this mod.....
Which I support fully

I agree with this
A plastic back would make much more sense as it would bend easier than metal for the corners while allowing for wireless charging and not causing any kind of electrical shorting issues.

Hi there,
ok, Plastic-Cover is another idea to think about.
But it looks not so good as Alu, or Metall. Hm, maybe th use of a Skin can make the Optic cooler than. Another Sideeffekt is that the Plastik is covered then against big sctratches. No Danger for short circuits then and hopefully no problems with wireless charging and so on.
To Build such an BC is easier, right. Bending and cut out the Holes, that's all what we can make ourselves (if you are not Double-Lefthanded).
Thanks for the Input. Will think about that and trying it if i have my S8 in the Future.
A Fullbody-Cover protects the Phone completly (Front+Back), but on the other Side it is more thicker, unhandy. Often the Buttons are not good to press, and such things.
if you insist on aluminium/metal, then you are going to have to give up some functionalities. otherwise, plastics would be your only option. wood might be a viable option too, however durability would be an issue with the material.
imho though, you mentioned that you have limited money and if you're going to get an aluminium/metal/wood back cover machined by someone, it's going to cost more than you would think. replacement glass are way cheaper and as the other user suggested, you have vinyl wraps to get the look that you want

This case looks promising, but I don't know. It has no reviews anywhere, and was only featured for an old Samsung s6. If anyone on here has it or wants to try it let me know. It comes with glass screen protector, and it's apparently all screwed in. The pricetag is also sort of hefty so idk.

Id be worried about cell reception with all that aluminum. If you get it be sure to do a before and after signal test for us.
Learned my lesson with aluminum cases, it ALWAYS affects signal.

I'm actually sending mine back this week. It's just way too impractical. The screen protector it comes with is very cheap so I didn't bother. It's also one of those cases that covers the bottom speaker and routes it to fire forward. I don't like that. You have to unscrew everything just to put the phone in and out and the metal frame, the way it rests on the phone, it doesn't give me a lot of confidence. In fact, I'm afraid it could help put enough pressure on the display to crack it with the way it's designed. Maybe I'm being too paranoid but it's not worth the risk, IMO.
Also, the little pin/lever thing on the side that's meant to move your volume slider? It doesn't work. I have to use two fingers to move both ends at the same time but it doesn't move the slider. Only the plastic pins move. So forget about being able to adjust the volume slider above the power button.
The case in general is just too bulky. I'm a pretty big guy and this case still feels too bulky and awkward to hold. It reminds me of the early days of Otterbox cases when they wanted to promote this "tank" protection-level mentality but today as you can see they've slimmed down and become more practical.
They're keeping about $7 for returning it, regardless of Prime or what return method you choose. FYI.
