I have not been following development since the DJ05 days and I am trying to catch up a bit. I would appreciate if someone could give me some clarity on the ext4 formatter. I searched through some of the threads but there seams to be little detail/instructions on exactly how to use this formatter.
1) Does the full wipe version of ext4 formatter wipe the kernel? Basically, do I need to flash a voodoo kernel after using the ext4 formatter or do I only need to flash voodoo kernel before using formatter?
2) Can I flash any ROM after using the formatter as long as the kernel supports ext4 or do I need to use ext4 only ROMS. (I.E. would this work with a stock build using a voodoo kernel)
3) Can I change radio after using formatter and flashing rom or would I need to disable lagfix before changeing radio versions?
4) Lastly, can I install apps from the market and app updates while file system is in ext4?
Thanks in advance for your help!!! I greatly appreciate it

As far as I know the ext format utility is just a program to disable our enable voodoo lag fix based on whether or not the kernel supports voodoo (ext4) or not.
Yes you can flash any rom/kernel combination, rfs (non voodoo) or ext4(voodoo) and the utility will convert your files as needed, but you cannot go to an mtd format (ie. Cm7 or miui) with this...for those formats you should only use the Recovery that came with those roms.
You can only install a new radio by pushing it through with odin, and radios are rom and kernel independent so your build will not matter and people get different results using this or that, trial and error is the only way to tell which radio is good for you
Also you will be able to install market apps with no problem.
Keep in mind I do not use this utility because I'm on cm7 so for me this is useless, but this is what I've gathered just from reading and being a general flash-a-holic.
How that helps give you some info!

This is seriously bugging me ever since someone mentioned the PDS partition was a culprit for not being able to update PRL/Data profile, and can cause other issues with the phone. I do not know of anyway to restore the partition as I don't have any nandroid backups.
Looking with a root browser, its empty, im not sure if the files are hidden in some way, but I'm able to view /system/ , but nothing appears in /pds/
No one has had this issue or knows what it means?
I'd also like the answer to this. I had it working fine on a different rom, then flashed CM9 to it and since then haven't been able to get it to update, even with my lock code and MSID and programming manually. I also don't have any backups..

A discussion was started in one of my other threads it might help

Still searching for a fix for this...cmon xda...please save the day!
I understand that the pds partition has information that is unique to each phone. Would there be a way for someone to upload their pds without their personal information and then I could fill in the blanks with mine? Then could I flash it to my phone?
Flash the PDS partition fix from the Atrix forums to create the partition, then hopefully someone will be kind enough to either share us their PDS files or tell us how to edit our own.
This is what worked for me...

Hello. Not so long ago I flashed a custom rooted ROM. After this I realized that I forgot to save some important app configs (im history, notes). As far as I know, Android uses ext4 filesystem on its root partition. Is there a way to perform undelete or any other method to try to recover deleted files? Searching the forums gives some results of repairing data on internal storage, but I guess the user data space is meant, not the root. My device is Huawei U8850 Vision, Android version 4.1.2. Thanks in advance.

If your data partition was wiped during flashing, there is no way to recover your lost files. (Assuming that's where they were stored)

Sorry for hijacking this thread but my question is similar.
I accidentally pasted an older version over the newer file. The file is somwhere in the /data/data directory so I suppose it is on the root partition. Is there any way to recover the previous version of the file?
thx
Hello!
I have recently unlocked and rooted my international Atrix it in order to try some other custom ROM's.As advised, i did make a backup of the original ROM (with Romracer’s Recovery 5.0.2.7-atrix5) before installing a new one(the backup files resulted are using this file extension ext3.tar).
After a while i decided to go back on 2.3.4 GB because of the better battery life.I encountered an error while restoring the system "Not enough space on device"(by using advanced restore i could restore data, cache and other partitions except system).
After searching on the internet about this problem, i realized that i couldn't restore the backup because my system partition has 320 MB of space while the system backup archive has 310 MB.It looks like the system need a bit more space in order do be able to extract/install and do it's thing.
My question is: 1) Do you guys know any method that i can use in order to restore that system partition?
1a) Is it possible to somehow alter the backup to make it smaller?
1b) Is making the system partition bigger an solution(i heard you can brick your phone by doing this)?
2) And last, if there is no way of restoring my backup, does anyone know where i could find an International 2.3.4 GB Fruitcake?I searched the whole forum but i couldn't find any working links.

Wiping system does not solve the issue and yes, i did search on the das8nt website.
After many attempts I finally got my Samsung Fantasy V2.3.5 rooted. I've tried several methods that I found on forums and after running one of them with Odin, I now have a slightly system. That did not root so I kept trying and now have it rooted and superuser privileges which is what I wanted so I can delete some bloat.
But now I have a few questions (probably pretty basic but as I said, I'm really new at this)
When I ran the Odin attempt I installed CI500_VZW_EH03_GB_CM.tar.md5 and also a program called atlas_v2.2.pit, which I understand created a new partition. I also ran cwm-recovery-ALL.tar and I can now boot into CWM recovery.
I would like to clean up my device and get rid of all that I put on it that I don't need. Here are my questions:
1. Can I get back to my original system? Is the new system on a different partition and if I delete that partition, will the device than default to my original?
2. If I go into CWM Recovery and clear the cache/reset, besides losing all of my data (contacts, settings, etc) will I also lose ROOT?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

well,,, using ODIN and the ROM file and the .pit file is essentially formatting the internal harddrive of your phone and recreating different & new partitions for the Rom to operate with.
It did not keep what you had.
{that also answers you question #1 )

is a good post about PIT files and what they do.
the link is on the Galaxy S I9000 page which is a cousin phone of the fascinate, couldn't find the fassy version.

to answer question #2...
No, by using that particular .tar.md5 file it is already pre-rooted,,, so wiping cache, or dalvik, or "factory reset" will not erase root
