Anybody know of an app that can monitor the current Drain Rate of my battery so that I have something concrete? So I won't have to wait n watch every time after flashing diff. kernels n ROMs
I personally don't use it (Others on here do, though) but the one I see most used is Current Widget - free on the market.
i use battery monitor widget by 3c06. it doesn't display continuous battery drain per se, but it shows the current draw in the status bar, which will give you an idea of battery drain with different roms & kernels. i believe 30-40mA is typical for the Tbolt at resting state
Cool thnx. I'll try em out.
K mine is 252mA resting. Could I be reading it wrong. Coarse I already knew my batt life was abysmal!
Now its 708

the current file only updates once per minute because of the driver, so you have to let it sit idle for at least more than that to truly get the idle power reading. the 252mA reading is not idle but a screen on reading, and the 700mA is with something transmitting or cpu crunching.
just let the phone sit idle for a good while with screen off, then check the current widget logs. TB sees around 40mA for some reason, while most other android phones see about 5mA during idle. kinda stinks but just the way the TB is right now.
[explained better by post above me]

This is what I use as well. With a 5 minute update rate for the history. It also can create a nice text file for you if you want to export the history to PC.
Works great.

mine was doing that too. i flashed perfect storm v1.4 + imoseyon's v1.11 kernel and now i'm getting a steady 40mA at idle
Why can't I just shorten the update rate or punch "update now" to check current status. Anyway that's wat I've been doing n my ratings gen. stay awful. Plus no matter wat state its in, should it ever be as high as 700+?
Nvr mind. I get it: turn off screen, wait n check log.
I'm checkn now. Have feeln its still terrible. It was amazing when I 1st flashed virusROM. I can't figure wats changed. Now I'm bak to getting bout 3hrs (like b4 I rooted) vs. 12hrs+
Anyway, wat does an idle reading tell me? I have 'setCPU', I know its remarkable w the screen off (when I'm not using it) wat should I get or is good for screen on and during usage?
I guess I'll just in-apply setCPU profile to check n compare kernels n ROMs but isn't the screen off parameter built in to most kernels? Doesn't seem like idle reading tells me much.
K I modified the update interval to every 30 sec's, disabled the "setCPU" 'screen-off' profile n then idled (turned the screen off) n found this:
First reading: 590 mA
Sec. reading:556
Third:596
Fourth: 648....
It goes in like this, a couple times going above 800.
WTF!?

Looks like it's charging. Unless you changed the default settings, positive current is charging, negative current is draining (in the usage chart, and in the history).
The current utilities show battery current, not phone current.
Nope. I wish. Those r all - #'s
Also w CPU set relatively low; around 1240 MHz. I've also tried lower.
I Noticed that it is MORE efficient w WiFi turned ON. Actually much more so. Between 2-300mA vs 7-800mA using CDMA auto(PRL)
Seems reversed right? N when I remove the setCPU widget it spikes 100mA more. (setCPU only runs in the background if u use the widget) so when I remove if, battery usage should go down (or least not change) not go up.
Confused
I am getting lower #s w diff kernels. The above #s are w the new kernel. They were much higher b4. Now idle (w setCPU profile off) is between 2-300 mA (setCPU profile on I get 44mA). If I turn off WiFi (yes I mean off) then it spikes btween 5-800 mA idle (screen off)
I'm using:
-ROM; virusROM RC1B3.1,
-Kernel;bamf 4.3 (currently- I've tried plenty others)
I think its the ROM but I'm not willing to switch) I love everything else n it wasn't always like this.

Let's see how long this puppy can go without charging.
I'll keep its usage only to phone calls and messaging (which is a lot). It'll be my main phone obviously (and I can't turn it off).
Settings:
a) devoid. rom (link)
b) wifi, gps, 3g, mobile data - off
c) brightness @ minimum
d) auto-sync - off
e) underclocked & undervolted @ 480Mhz (min: 122Mhz)
f) governor set to conservative (still thinking about it)
g) hardware acceleration - off
h) watchdog lite installed (to check for apps gone berserk)
i) load monitor installed (to check for kernel loops and wakelocks)
j) airplane mode when sleeping or at classes, exams or hospital
k) red colored wallpaper (red is in the lower spectrum of visible light EM: higher wavelength, lower frequency, lower energy, lower battery consumption?)

You really DO get bored!
You don't seem to have forgotten anything. I don't know if a red wallpaper really helps, since the big consumer is the backlight which you already minimized.
Good luck, I'll be checking this thread to see your record and I hope you are keeping track of how much talk time you get during this experiment.
What about ringtones? Are they on ?

i just did it to my phone.. but with the original stock lg rom. i set all settings to default , no wifi, no gps.... just calls and messages and a little use of mp3's about 1 hour.
the battery is 1%
and i have done 3 days and 2 hours.
1.31 hours of phone calls.
just when i need it..
i had unchecked all sychronization things, apps and i set it to gprs..
without turning off or airplane mode
the brightness was the default.
i thing it can be last longer..

Hmm, well the brightness is already so low :x
Anyway, I have to restart the test.
Underclock and undervolt seems to consume more battery...
I'll unplug @ midnight of 13/01/2011, GMT+0.
Keep us posted.
I've made a Test with Javali, using the LG P500 just for Calls and SMS, and after 48 Hours i still got 60% of Battery.
14 hours ~ 94% battery, without underclock/undervolt or using airplane mode.
i had cpu tuner and it respond so freaking slow...i wanted to save battery but instead ive managed to drain it more faster....

I didn't underclock it.
I did at first but consumption was higher so I put it back to 600Mhz and restarted the test.
So, by extrapolation, we can assume around 6 days of battery life. Still, without knowing the talktime this is inconclusive.
@Noejn
What about undervolting keeping the same Mhz, is that possible?

I never tryed draining compleatly my battery because i keep on pluggin it in my computer to test stuff, but I would be happy if my phone could last aprox. 4days.

Hi everyone. When I first got my 10.1, it seemed the battery on the first half of a charge lasted forever. I notice now it is dropping faster using the Starburst ROM. Just wondering if this is all in my head, or if this is possible?
I originally switched for the purpose of extended life and faster speeds (less processes).
Thanks for answering anyone,
I'm using the Starburst ROM, and I haven't noticed much if any change in the battery life of the device.
I just saw the guy who made one of the roms in the dev forum say he got 36 hours on his one charge, and that 7 is terrible. I am running the stock kernel and pulling 6-7.5hrs battery with wifi and MINIMUM SCREEN BRIGHTNESS.
Is something wrong?
I am running ADW launcher ex with no animations on.

I am that guy. Everything depends on what you are doing with your tab also. When I got 36 hours I basically was only listening to music in my car and checking emails with brightnesstona minimum. But when I'm programming and having to constantly reboot, flash and test things out I still pull at least 20-24 hours. I find it really hard to kill my battery during a day long period. I don't run any Widgets also.

Stock kernel does not have current property exposed so you cannot see current directly. But if you look at dmesg log for fg_read_current reports... so you can judge tablets average current, something like this:
fg_read_current : CURRENT(-470mA), AVG_CURRENT(-416mA)
That's normal values for minimum brightness, WiFi on and idle.
Now do math. 470mA * 7 hours = 3290 mAh
So, if this is the case, then your tab needs battery calibration because you should have battery capacity around 6500mAh - 7000mAh.
But if your fg_read_current reads around 800mA - 900mA then you on a ballpark.
PS: with max back light current should be around 1000mA, so run time with calibrated battery would be around 6 hours. In order to pull 36 hours, current should be 6900 / 36 = 190mA - that means your have to turn screen Off completely and maybe put tablet in kind of semi-hibernate mode when only media players is working. I did not try that, I don't know.

Ok. If you don't mind what is there that I have to do to see this value? Run pershoots kernel?
Did you see a difference in current consumption between the stock and pershoots?
I went from stock to Task650's ROM with Pershoot's Kernel. At first battery life was terrible.
I then had to calibrate the battery. (Essentially letting it run down till the tab auto shuts down, then booted into recovery and left it running some more. Then charged to full while the tablet was off.)
I now get the battery life that Task650 is talking about.
ok, call me stupid but you want be to believe you can actually have the gtab running 30+ hours on one charge with screen and wifi on all this time? how much of that time is it actually running and how much it's hibernated (as in turned off by single press of power button or shut down autonomously when idle)?

I did not mention significant change in current consumption going from stock to pershoot kernel. Min. brightness and web browsing will average 530- 550mA which gives about 12 hours of non-stop run-time.
In fact even overclocked CPU (I've 1.2Ghz) will eat maybe 20-50mA more BUT only when running 100%. Which is perfectly in line with overclocking speed increase of 20%. But it will have job done also 20% faster and then goes idle... so there would be no penalty for overclocking.
with pershoot kernel you can use Battery monitor or use ADB command:
adb shell cat /sys/class/power_supply/battery/batt_current
with stock kernel your only option to analyze kernel log, say like this:
adb shell dmesg | grep "fg_read_current"
Well, if you will find that your battery needs to be calibrated then here is the proper way to do it:

He did not specified how he run his music - with screen On or without... but this is obvious... screen is major power sucker, in order to claim 36hours screen must be off.
edit: alright, i just test it... streaming mp3 from Google music with screen off requires only 140mA with 25% volume. so 6900 / 140 = 49 hours.
and with screen on - 550mA.
At this point, how safe are we for running an OC anyways....cooling is terrible in a tablet without a fan, noone really knows the answer until they start dying in the coming months.
As for battery life, I will try your method and see what happens. If still toast, I will switch over to a different kernel, and do the data logging you are talking about.
So, I went to sleep at full charge, took it off the charger to see how my drain was....I woke up 6 hours later and it was at 64%. I took a look at partial wake locks and it looks as follows (I can't upload .png from my phone)
RILJ (Dialer) 205s count 2178
juicedefender 3019s count 1570
Alarm manager 1543s count 1320
Google services event log also has a pretty high count. I ran the "battery fix" and all that jazz, recalibrated my battery, not sure why drain is so terrible?
Could someone please help me out?
I am running cm7 with faux 0.2.0 1.3 kernel. I have it undervolted and profiles so it never goes above 1ghz unless on ac charger. (456 when screen is off)

I'm not sure how much it helps you with your issue, but for me JuiceDefender works very well. I would otherwise have a multitude of data sync apps such as Gmail running, and this limits it while periodically enabling sync.
Start tweaking what apps are using data and the battery life will be better.
I have had a problem the same where I am not so sure juicedefender is helping because I tend to set my phone on the desk when I do homework and the screen comes on after I put into sleep mode and then no more that 5 seconds later it turns on at about 25% screen brightness then jumps to 100% them dims to 25% then goes off, all in a matter of between 10-20seconds. I loom at the battery use area in settings and standby is at least 40% & display is right under and idle is next. my settings that I think may be causing this are the mobile data where the autosync is set at enable (in juice defender) & I tried ping but it does the same thing. I just want to know why the screen comes on ever 5 seconds. I don't know how to contact the developer to try and resolve my problem. I am actually on a thunderbolt but that shouldn't matter. I just wanted to reinforce that "i'm not sure juice defender is working as I get about the same battery life".
Xoom Xoom
I get double the life out of the same roms. I'll try a rom for a day then run juice defender and get a day and a half. Depends on how you have defender setup. The only thing I don't like it doing is disabling my wifi as It sometimes won't reconnect back unless I manually do it. I think setcpu is a joke though. I had it set for 216/456 at screen off and it was running at 1200 for 1/2 the time it was supposed to be asleep. Then whne I opened it up...(Battery less than 50% stay below 1000) and the screen booted up 1300. So to me it's an extra service I don't need.
JD has always given me more battery life on any rom that I have tried.. I recently got rid of it and am trying out GreenPower. so far GP seems to work a bit better than JD. I get a bit more life out of my batter than JD gave me.. try green power out if JD is not cutting it for you.. GP seems a bit lighter as well.. so, could be overall why get more battery life out of it..
Zug
Juice Defender seemed to do little to nothing for my phone. I got rid of it and my battery life remained the same. I can't say the same for everyone else but what works for you might not work for the next guy.
All I'm simply saying is give it a shot and test it out religiously before you make a decision to use it or not.
Works for me another good thing to do if you use set CPU underclock the hell out of it when the screen is off not using it so why not

Install the battery calibration app and see if your charge at 100% shows 4000mV+, if it doesn't, that means your calibration is off and you need to search for juggernaut's battery thread and follow the instructions on that to fix your calibration.

Barely saw any gain using JD...only used it on my Dell Streak though. The atrix will go 2 days if I need it to so I don't see any need for JD.
I m using JD for nearly 2 years now and I have to say that it DEFINITLY improves battery-life - just by letting it switch off your 3G when you don´t need it you save a lot of juice.
When I still used my Captivate as my DD, JD helped alot. With all the firmware leaks I was reflashing my phone all the time and constantly testing different kernels/roms/apps for battery life.
On my Atrix, it hasn't seemed to help nearly as much. Not sure why... SetCPU with faux's OC/UV kernel has boosted battery significantly though.
I got lots of wakelocks using it. For me it's better to turn off data manually.

Interesting. I'll have to try green power. JD said my battery multiplier was 2.10x when I used it. It could just be making that up though. I got 28 hours of life from the atrix and still had 40% battery left (moderate usage: frequent texting and periodic data+wifi usage, I think a 20-30 minute phone call too)
I swtiched to green power. Didn't notice much of a difference in battery life, but Gp is certainly a lot easier to use.

Can someone confirm, that without the dual core scripts the 2nd core never kicks in? The normal behaviour should be that the 2nd core kicks in when the first core is stressed, e.g. setcpu stress test ore playing a 3D game.
Lee confirmed, that he configured the second core to be not so sensible..and said that he will have a look at the config again.
I think the behaviour of the second core is controlled in the system/bin/mpdecision file...I changed it with one of a Evo 3D cdma rom, after that i saw the first time that my second core kicks in in system tuner, it turned on/off several times - altough it shouldn't be needed.
i think the standard config is too sensible, so it was a good move from lee to lower it - but I think now with the current config it seems that the second core is completly turned off =D
Yep i can confirm! My second score never kicks in! Ive flashed the ondemand patch from first post and undervolted -100 and love the battery life now!

Yeah i know but battery life for my usage is ok! But i know dat right. I really miss 3 days of battery life with my Nexus S! But i know the kernels getting better and better
what do you guys use to change the volt with lee's kernel ?
I am having huge battery drain and cant figure out what it is!?
getting about 100-300 mA in standby 90% of the time and an everything from 450 - 950 mA while using the phone, some times I don't even use any load on the cpu but it still peaks to 900 mA
I am carefully watching a cpu notification while using the phone and it draws usually 300+ mA with max 10 % cpu load with interactive governor
I tried downclock to 192MHz and disabling second core (since it never enables with lee's new rom) and it still uses the exact same mA. so downclock and disabling doesnt help the powerdrain at all
what to do ? just lost about 10 % by 15 minutes of standby !?
my only thought was that the cpu was giving the same voltage no matter what the frequency is, so if there is any app that could change the volt ?
have any of you had huge power drain ? could anyone try to check how much mA your evo uses in standby with the new kernel and rom ?

dont trust the ma values, for me all battery apps are showing 200+ in standby. htc delivers crappy weird ma values and theirs no way to fix that. The dev if battery monitor can confirm that.
...im loosing 1% over night.
Try to reinstall rom without third party app. Are you using htc Mail with exchange - it got a bug which keeps your device awake when in airplane mode.
Theres also an app in the market, where you can check if your phone goes to standby or not..srx dont remember the name - Google it

well have you tried "battery Monitor widget pro" thats the one I am using, it has an fix for evo 3d to fix mA drain
problem is that I calculated the drain by just simple math and it confirms the mA drain ;/ so the program does really appear to be correct
maybe some one else could try "battery Monitor widget pro" and see if they are experiencing the same mA drain with this program ?
but the strange thing is that it wasnt draining so much before the kernel update and rom, and some times it goes down to normal usage but happens rarely
I do not use mail exchange, going to check for the standby program though and try to reinstall without any apps ! thanks for the suggestion

I do not use mail exchange, going to check for the standby program though and try to reinstall without any apps ! thanks for the suggestion

Yeah, know this app but its not working for me, still shows >200 during screen off also with the special evo 3d fix.
..searched about 30 min to find that app:
Cpu spy from market.
it shows you how long your device is on which frequencies or in deep sleep.
Reset the values in the menu and turn your device off. After a minute check the values.
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m using xda premium
I just tested the cpu spy, and I had the screen off for 5 min, and only deep state was counted, said 90% (5 min)
And 30 second on 192mhz
Seems to be right?
yeah, should be fine. And yourre sure, that you lost 10% of battery in 15min of standby? Try calibrating your battery with battery calibration from market.
charge to 100% and then calibrate.
yes 100 % sure but i wass messing with the the frequency of the cpu , might be what drained the power because today it has been normal standby time
already used battery calibrating, it did get a little better in standby after that.
but i still have huge power drain by just turning on the screen, and typing
i had just sent a couple of messages through "messenger for facebook" throught an hour and it used 20 % battery and I only turned on the screen, unlocked it typed a fast short messages and turned the screen off again a couple of times
I was connected with Edge all the time (gsm) since 3G was turned off to save battery but still huge power drain.
I just feel like every time the screen is on the % start falling fast :s
thats why I wanted to check out undervolting but cant find a app that supports lee's kernel

Use System Tuner from 3c (same dev as battery monitor) to undervolt.
Easy as hell
Haha thanks, lol I had an old version of system tuner that's why I didn't have any voltage control
Seems like my battery life is a bit more normal now, thanks for all the help and time you spent!

Maybe Edge is the problem for your battery-drain! When my Evo is on Edge it needs way more battery as with 3g!
And try to disable "automatic display light" (no plan how it is called in english). I always use the second stage from 4... i hope you know what i mean!

Well I did notice that edge drain at least as much as 3g so no point at disabling 3g, I got my battery a little more stable but still use Huge power drain sometimes
But going to reinstall everything, do a clean wipe and stuff and install only the apps I use not all the cap I got now.
Maybe that will help a bit on the battery
still questioning the LeeDrOiD rom for battery life.
I love the rom but miss battery life, sense 3.5 and the new Android version 4(i know the new android version isn't released for htc evo 3d yet though) but really looking forward to it!
I have been messing around with system tuner app for a while now and I really like the program.
I would like to hear from people who have used this app and their results with various tweaks that this app provides.
in the boot settings menu:
1. forcing both CPU's online: this should technically give you a better battery life, since it puts less strain on on cpu at a time, has anyone had a good exprience using this?
2. Boost app loading: anyone had any significant improvement with this?
My own settings:
I usually clock my phone at 1.5 (on demand governor) even though faux's kernel allows 1.7 max. I put max clock for screen off at 384 and conservative governor.
I have Undervolted before but do not see a very significant battery difference so I just left it alone.
I tried out the autokill option of system tuner, I only tried to kill the ghost apps, to refrain from the cpu from having to keep restarting the phone, but this also seems to kill battery life...In my experience any type of task killer however detailed will reduce battery and does not increase performance, unless you're running a poorly written app that just needs to be killed.
I use three other programs to monitor my phone
1. system pannel: very good at finding rogue apps that kill cpu...I highly recommend the pro version, you can get a history of what has used cpu up to a week.
2. Onavo and My data manger which basically monitor my wifi and mobile traffic, Onavo only monitors mobile network traffic and lets you restrict apps to only wifi. however it does not measure wifi use of data. My data manager monitor both wifi and network usage but does not give you any options to do anything with the apps, it basically tells you what program is using data while on wifi and mobile.
If anyone has found a good balance between performance and battery saving, please do share.
Thank you.
I read some other guy also mentioned the all cpus on thing. im not sure but isnt it the same as making both processors work at the same time which leads to phone overheating? I will give it a try though. from what you noticed, do you like it more with both cpu on or is better the way it was?

technically this is how it's supposed to work pic attatched, but I don't know if our roms or even the dual core rom that's out works in this manner, if it did we would be seeing significant battery savings

will see then. hey seansk do you notice some kind of hesitation when trying to unlock the phone? when u press the unlock button at the top. I think that boost app loading thing causes this cuz when have it enabled the unlock button you have to press it twice to work, while when disabling that boost app loading thing all works fine...

I have widget locker and havn't had that problem...I just flashed faux's latest kernel and am in the process of re calibrating my battery, it seemed to jump from 100 to 90 in about 10 minutes!!!!!! now I noticed that happening...but I havn't had time to fully replicate it...i need more time..I believe it might have something to do with fauxes kernel, he mentioned that when screen goes off he it puts the phone into a low power consumption mode, but also has something that when you turn it on, is quick to turn on!!! we'll have to wait and see.
If you've been following this thread, just wanted make a quick update...I want to give you my results with system tuner tweaking. Forcing both cores online is a bad idea. It will literally kill your battery in a matter of a couple of hours. ICS will hopefully be different and utilize the cores how they should be, saving some battery and giving the amaze longer battery life!
On the other hand reducing reducing clock frequency on screen off will help in battery life (obviously).

I was noticing the same. It eats more battery. Have u tried reducing the frequency when screen off and by how much? U still r stock rom?

yes still stock rooted, I put the governor on conservative and put the frequency to 384 or around there, while screen is off.
What helps most I found out is turning off all the radios like wifi and network data, (basically putting phone on airplane mode). Instead of dropping down 15 percent in 6 hours it drops like 3 when I turn airplane on. But like I've said before it's unrealistic I'm always recieving google talk, google voice, facebook updates and I have to have both of these on which unfortunately eats a lot of battery.
I keep switching back and forth between faux's kernel and stock and I'm actually finding stock gives me better battery life for some reason. Even though I set the clock speeds on both at 1.5 ghz.

Battery Life
Major battery drain is the screen, when on eats up all the juice, dimming helps a bit
charge source: usb vs AC charge
usb charging takes quite a while, AC charge quicker (~ an hour)
Also, from my observation, usb charged battery runs out quicker than AC charge
Data Connection, Juice defender helps a lot
turn off sync you don't need, like HTC sense
if something is eating up your battery, use this http://market.android.com/details?i...ePad&utm_medium=app&utm_campaign=contextpanel. The thread is located http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809

well the problem is its not my screen. It's when the phone is idle, I usually lose about 15 to 20 percent over night. if I turn off the radios it drops down to about 3 to 4 percent overnight....like I said before I can't turn off the radios...I constantly use google voice, google talk, facebook. And they require both a cell connection and a data connection. I hate to pay for more apps...I've already paid for a bunch of apps to control and see my phone's usage of cpu and battery...is the app really worth it? wish they had a lite version

I have juicedefender ultimate, used it for a while actually...the only good use of it is turns off radios all other things when screen is off..all other things are negligible to battery life...I currently don't use it anymore. I tried multiple things/tweaks with it for about two weeks,...NO point lol...I want to be able to get my google talk message and my google voice texts, it annoyed the hell out of me when someone had sent something like 2 hours before and I would just get it when I woke my phone!!! I tried all kinds of things...but the only thing that actually worked was turning off radios during screen off which I don't want...I can't win lol....I can't have my cake and eat it too!!

while you sleep, you won't be checking for emails will you? but you expect to wake and see emails received.... that is where it comes in handy. with apps like tasker, you can automate some of this activities. tasker + syncer should be a good combo for you.

For what it is worth I am running BulletProof 2.3.1 and last night I took phone off charger at 10:00 PM, alarm goes off at 3:30 snoozing every 15 min until 4:15...Battery was at 100% still. It is now 7:00 AM and battery is at 96%.
This was after flashing back to BP around 8:00 PM.
I've noticed the same type of activity when in Airplane mode. Extremely low power consumption - fantastic.
Is it possible maybe to undervolt the Wifi/BT/Mobile radios? Would that make any difference or am I off base here?

You had something setup wrong then I think.. you can change how often in syncs while the screen is off, the default setting is for it to turn on data for 1 minute every 15 minutes. Most people don't need to know things so bad that they can't work with a 14 minute delay(at worst), and of couse the internet is on while screen is on, when you're actually using it.
I thought I would need to use juice defender, but since I switched to bulletproof, my usage last me an entire day. From 8am till 1am, usually with some to spare. The only tweak I made to cpu was to enable 192mhz, it isn't like there is a performance drop, but it did make a notable difference in battery life.
If I wanted to I could use juice defender to get more than one day out of it, and I keep a spare battery on me in case I really need to use the phone.. but haven't really needed it.
