[Q] Custom ROM battery life? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone. When I first got my 10.1, it seemed the battery on the first half of a charge lasted forever. I notice now it is dropping faster using the Starburst ROM. Just wondering if this is all in my head, or if this is possible?
I originally switched for the purpose of extended life and faster speeds (less processes).
Thanks for answering anyone,

I'm using the Starburst ROM, and I haven't noticed much if any change in the battery life of the device.

I just saw the guy who made one of the roms in the dev forum say he got 36 hours on his one charge, and that 7 is terrible. I am running the stock kernel and pulling 6-7.5hrs battery with wifi and MINIMUM SCREEN BRIGHTNESS.
Is something wrong?
I am running ADW launcher ex with no animations on.

I am that guy. Everything depends on what you are doing with your tab also. When I got 36 hours I basically was only listening to music in my car and checking emails with brightnesstona minimum. But when I'm programming and having to constantly reboot, flash and test things out I still pull at least 20-24 hours. I find it really hard to kill my battery during a day long period. I don't run any Widgets also.

Stock kernel does not have current property exposed so you cannot see current directly. But if you look at dmesg log for fg_read_current reports... so you can judge tablets average current, something like this:
fg_read_current : CURRENT(-470mA), AVG_CURRENT(-416mA)
That's normal values for minimum brightness, WiFi on and idle.
Now do math. 470mA * 7 hours = 3290 mAh
So, if this is the case, then your tab needs battery calibration because you should have battery capacity around 6500mAh - 7000mAh.
But if your fg_read_current reads around 800mA - 900mA then you on a ballpark.
PS: with max back light current should be around 1000mA, so run time with calibrated battery would be around 6 hours. In order to pull 36 hours, current should be 6900 / 36 = 190mA - that means your have to turn screen Off completely and maybe put tablet in kind of semi-hibernate mode when only media players is working. I did not try that, I don't know.

Ok. If you don't mind what is there that I have to do to see this value? Run pershoots kernel?
Did you see a difference in current consumption between the stock and pershoots?

I went from stock to Task650's ROM with Pershoot's Kernel. At first battery life was terrible.
I then had to calibrate the battery. (Essentially letting it run down till the tab auto shuts down, then booted into recovery and left it running some more. Then charged to full while the tablet was off.)
I now get the battery life that Task650 is talking about.

ok, call me stupid but you want be to believe you can actually have the gtab running 30+ hours on one charge with screen and wifi on all this time? how much of that time is it actually running and how much it's hibernated (as in turned off by single press of power button or shut down autonomously when idle)?

I did not mention significant change in current consumption going from stock to pershoot kernel. Min. brightness and web browsing will average 530- 550mA which gives about 12 hours of non-stop run-time.
In fact even overclocked CPU (I've 1.2Ghz) will eat maybe 20-50mA more BUT only when running 100%. Which is perfectly in line with overclocking speed increase of 20%. But it will have job done also 20% faster and then goes idle... so there would be no penalty for overclocking.
with pershoot kernel you can use Battery monitor or use ADB command:
adb shell cat /sys/class/power_supply/battery/batt_current
with stock kernel your only option to analyze kernel log, say like this:
adb shell dmesg | grep "fg_read_current"
Well, if you will find that your battery needs to be calibrated then here is the proper way to do it:

He did not specified how he run his music - with screen On or without... but this is obvious... screen is major power sucker, in order to claim 36hours screen must be off.
edit: alright, i just test it... streaming mp3 from Google music with screen off requires only 140mA with 25% volume. so 6900 / 140 = 49 hours.
and with screen on - 550mA.

At this point, how safe are we for running an OC anyways....cooling is terrible in a tablet without a fan, noone really knows the answer until they start dying in the coming months.
As for battery life, I will try your method and see what happens. If still toast, I will switch over to a different kernel, and do the data logging you are talking about.

[dev support please] CMOD 5.0.5.3+ display batrery killer.

I figured I'd make this its own thread after speaking with several people with the same problems using a CMOD 5.0.5.3+ rom. This wasn't a problem in lower editions from what I can remember in testing.
Idk but I believe it is something in the kernel affecting this problem with the display hogging my battery. Even after flashing an undervolted kernel I still can only last 24 hours with an extended life battery, vs a weeks time before. And the display problem has been like this in all CMODS test .6 Roms as well so idk if it is in the process of getting fixed or simply overlooked. And other Rome work well but are slower it seams.
The display settings doesn't matter auto or manual its about the same. So devs what can we do to find the change or what can I do to help?

I'm running test 3 of 5.0.6. Today i read a book with fbreader for around 2hrs on it whilst on the train, had 2 30 minute phone conversations, around 20 texts, a dozen gtalk messages, and played blackjack for about 20 mins. i'm also using pershoots OCUV kernal, and after 11hrs without being plugged in I am at 75% battery. I'm happy with that.
I think it is a work in progress, as each new build comes out it's better. His testing builds are just that - testing. None of his release builds I have ever had an issue with either, although maybe my phone ue is a lot less than others I dunno. All i can say is i've never been tempted with another rom since early days on my magic phone Cyanogen rocks!

Nope, I have it on auto-detect, so quite bright when on the train and outdoors. I have setCPU (market, paid) running and set battery profiles - although I haven't hit them yet. I have it set to max 1.1ghz 100% to 50%, 998mhz from 50% to 40%, 776mhz from 40% to 30%, and under 30% to 500 and something.
I do use an app called autostarts (market, paid) and have set everything but system services/apps to not run on any kind of state change or startup. I use Advanced Task Killer to kill apps as soon as I finish with them.
But i've had all these for ages, I just think a big improvement on the last release test 3
Nandroid your existing and try out test3.
I've been experiencing the same symptoms with my battery usage generally dominated by the display. I'm using a UV kernel currently (intersectravens) so we will see if the same happens.
KingKlicks's DESIRE rom doesnt have the same problem it seems and the battery usage is much better.
Wondering if there is a underlying issue.
after .6 test 3 the battery has improved decently, still the display is hogging battery life more so than in the sense rom
Same thing here... Display totally kills the battery with CM5.0.5.3 and OC/UV kernel. Phone rarely lasts over a day with moderate to low usage...
Without usage I can barely get a days use :s
I get the impression that its not the display. I can have 50% display usage, sleep my phone while playing a MP3 and then have more than 50% usage... suggesting that its either he display+something in one category , or there is a bug.
The stock ROM always showed display at the highest usage also. I'm not saying that there isn't an issue, but remember that those numbers are all relative.
I'll say this: I charge nightly to prevent my battery "deep cycling"....That being said I un-plug at 8am and plug-in at about 11p-12a, I use my phone a TON.....usually when I plug in I have about 45-55%.....Not bad at all.....
I originally thought display being the main battery hog was a bad thing.....Then I thought about it a bit......
Would you rather the "system" use more batt? Cell Stand by?
Display (by all rights) should use most battery. More usage=Less time with a fully charged battery.....
Im using CM 5.0.5.3 and I switched Roms after using the stock for 3 months. As soon as I moved to CM I immediatly noticed the battery life was lower than before. I hope you find an issue to this problem ASAP.......I love your ROMs CM, but I love my battery life even more
Good luck with this !!
"display" = gpu acceleration and actual amoled power
Something else i just noticed, very odd. I had 41% display and 23% spotify.... i had been playing for music for a while (offline only). When i quit the spotify app... the entry from the battery usage vanished and display took a spike to 65% ish... really odd. Almost display is showing usage for a group of things.

Ignore any figures people quote - battery life is always relative. One persons 'usual' usage is different than yours. A friend of mine brings his N1 to works and it sits on his desk syncing email - he gets 1 full day.
I bring mine, sync 2 accounts, play a lot of podcasts, have a RSS syncer going and use twitter and FB loads, i get a LOT less.
Dont worry to much, your usage figures are pretty normal depending on your usage patterns.
They say your mileage may vary for a reason
Battery Life
My Battery life has always sucked. Maybe I should buy a new Battery?
If I take my phone off the charger at 7:30, and don't plug it in all day, then I will be at about 30% or less by the time I get home at around 5:30. Unless I don't use it. But I use my phone to play stream music pretty much all day. Or at least 4 hours. One day I forgot my USB cable and I was below 20% by 3:00.
It is still better than iSuck, I mean iPhone, and worse than a BlackBerry. I have electricity everywhere though, a car charger, and an extra battery is like 25$?
So what is the big deal? You have the equivalent of a desktop computer from like 2002 in your pocked running off of a batter the size of a credit card, how long do you really want the thing to last anyway?

[Q] Telus fascinate serious battery drain HELP!!!!!

Ive noticed serious battery drain since I first bought this fascinate from telus. On 2.1it lasted around 11 hours. Since upgrading to 2.2 leak, id say 8 hoirs max with only approx 1 hour of uusage and the rest on standby. I turned of sync, auto brightnrss and turned brightndss as.low as possible. I make sure no apps r running in the background. Yet it still dies superfast. Is this a issue with my battery thr phone itself or firmware or kernal. Its been a week of trying to find the problem so any help would b greatly appreciated. At tgis time im running 2.2 leak with all the files it came with and no root. Thx in advNce
And hour and 12 minutes with about 30 min of internwt surfing and im down to 80 percent WTF
I update OTA last week on Verizon to Froyo 2.2. My battery was overheating and draining like crazy from my CPU usage being at a constant 99%..
I found the source of the problem. An app I use for facebook called "FLOW". The CPU usage was cut to 20% when I killed it with "Advanced Task Killer".
I resolved the issue by: Opening Flow.. going to Preferences.. Notification Settings.. Refresh Type.. Checked Periodic Polling (I was using Gmail Experimental previously)
Hope this helps...

sounds about average for a fascinate....
I'm on telus as well and also have terrible battery life, I've found no fix other than completely turning off Data using the toggle when holding the power button. Flashing a new rom might fix this but I've been to scared to since I bricked a phone trying it the first time. Hopefully when/if ever we get a 2.3 update it fixes this
Does anyone know where one can get an extended battery for this? I picked one up but it's for the friggin Verizon US version, and the battery cover isn't compatible, even though the battery fits(camera doesn't align, speaker's not even close).
Seriously, the American counterpart's accessories have been my biggest frustration with this phone, next to battery life...
Thought I'd give this a bump. The battery life on this Telus Fascinate 4G is truly disappointing and jumping through hoops trying to find and kill apps and services with and without utilities is wasting far too much of my time.
Anybody get a good handle on this?
Bump for same problem.
Samsung Fascinate SCH-i500 Verizon
Running unmodified and unrooted. The phone itself works perfect. No problems other than the phone seriously eats battery. Yes the battery is still good and nothing wrong with it. Plugged in it charges super slowly. And the screen itself takes more than it provides. So i did the following.
A. Changed battery to a known working one.
B. Check with car charger and a home charger. As well as official samsung charger.
C. Gave a ROM a try. Running Dirty Unicorn. Lowered cpu to 800 max and 100 min.
D. Turned display to 50% Brightness.
My only try now is to try a different kernel or something. Im also thinking that the display itself is the culprit somehow eating to much voltage.
Or the gpu. The phones operating temps are good.
I have another post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2430393 relating to where i have a USB problem and need help figuring it out. There has not been any replies. So i am taking upon myself to learn more. Ive worked with 3 Droid Milestones. Hopefully these two i500s will not be to hard. I need help on this new i500 to see if its not the motherboard. The charging port is on the motherboard and if this replacement eats batteries , then the point would be mute to use it for a working USB. A conundrum.
Do i try a different kernel or somthing else. Whats my next step.. Please help.

what else do you have running?
what is the battery life overall usage? and screen usage hours?
screen is always gonna be the highest consumer of your battery
50% still pretty high unless you are out in sunlight, I keep mine between 0 and 30 % unless in sunlight
you can try running the greenify app from playstore.
what king of life are you expecting to get? anywhere between 6hrs to 24 hours total phone battery life is about average depending on how heavy user or how much in standby mode.

3h 25m left

Cell Standby 9%
SystemUI 7%

Its defiantly got something wrong as even though it says 56% if I unplug it, it will die in about 10 min. Even with a fully charged battery it does the same. Yes i also waited until 100% and wiped batt stats and at 3% left wiped stats. Screen is in standby

you can get better logs and information, plus if something is not easily visible to what is causing problems you can post up a log file for them to look at.

I had installed the program and it didn't really show anything abnormal. Although after installing the Bat Meter, when i shutdown it killed the phone till i ODIN. So tried on the other phone as well. Same thing. Install it and compared notes. Reboot phone and had to ODIN. So maybe bad app? Well whatever. I didn't see anything unusual. Although I did notice something strange about the phone that's bad with charging. I already eliminated the battery as the problem as well as charger. But the phone that is eating battery faster than it can charge, it gets warmer at idle than the other phone. It charged just super super tiny faster than the battery eats using just idle display on lock-screen. As well this phone also with a fully charged battery will read 100% But after about 21 minutes of poweramp at 33% volume on headphones will read about 52%. Then sitting rest at idle no display from 52% down to about 14% popup around another 5 min. Then completely dead in about 3 minutes. And the phone is pretty warm. Today it was ambient temp of around 87* outside and sitting in shade and it was hot enough that it wasn't comfortable on my cheek for more than 20 seconds. Half the time the temps are normal. Now remember I'm not running overclock and actually under clocked to 800. Ive tried 3 different roms with diff kernels and same. Could it possibly be a bad heat-sink? And the extra heat is killing battery?
[Q] Battery Drain
I recently was given a Fascinate and am having similar problems. I was told the phone had a bad battery, so I ordered a replacement. Once I got the new battery in, I flashed the phone with the Carbon ROM [the phone was unlocked, but running the OTA 2.3.5 I believe]. Everything seemed to be working fine the first week or two, but now there appears to be a serious battery drain or leak after I power the phone down. I can charge the phone to 100%, power it on and use it for a period of time, then power it down with 90% or more battery life, but when I turn the phone back on, the battery will either be really low, or completely dead, where the phone won't respond at all until I plug the charger back in.
I reflashed the phone with an AOKP ROM to see if that'd make a difference, but it didn't. I tried using the first battery and the drain/leak still persists. The commonality between the two roms is the Devil kernel, so I'm going to flash a different ROM with a different kernel to see if that makes a difference. I also installed the app mentioned above to log the battery stats/usage to see if anything stands out there.
Has anyone experienced something similiar - the Fascinate consuming battery life while powered off?
Yeah the power off leak does seem to exist.
Can't remember the cause though.
I've not tried to really confirm,, but try popping the battery out then back in after you have powered off,,, then check after it has sat overnight to see if drain still exist..
Mine i just always leave on a charger overnight.
.
[Q]
Thanks for the reply. I'll try that. I've left the phone on today, just put it to sleep during periods of inactivity, and the battery is currently at 75% with occasional mild use after 8+ hours "on".
[edit 11-29-13]
After almost two weeks of use, I can confirm that if I power the phone down and do nothing else, the battery will continue to drain to 0%. If I power the phone down then remove and replace the battery, it's fine. It's an extra step, but it works. Thanks again.

Battery drain rate app?

Anybody know of an app that can monitor the current Drain Rate of my battery so that I have something concrete? So I won't have to wait n watch every time after flashing diff. kernels n ROMs
I personally don't use it (Others on here do, though) but the one I see most used is Current Widget - free on the market.
i use battery monitor widget by 3c06. it doesn't display continuous battery drain per se, but it shows the current draw in the status bar, which will give you an idea of battery drain with different roms & kernels. i believe 30-40mA is typical for the Tbolt at resting state
Cool thnx. I'll try em out.
K mine is 252mA resting. Could I be reading it wrong. Coarse I already knew my batt life was abysmal!
Now its 708

the current file only updates once per minute because of the driver, so you have to let it sit idle for at least more than that to truly get the idle power reading. the 252mA reading is not idle but a screen on reading, and the 700mA is with something transmitting or cpu crunching.
just let the phone sit idle for a good while with screen off, then check the current widget logs. TB sees around 40mA for some reason, while most other android phones see about 5mA during idle. kinda stinks but just the way the TB is right now.
[explained better by post above me]

This is what I use as well. With a 5 minute update rate for the history. It also can create a nice text file for you if you want to export the history to PC.
Works great.

mine was doing that too. i flashed perfect storm v1.4 + imoseyon's v1.11 kernel and now i'm getting a steady 40mA at idle
Why can't I just shorten the update rate or punch "update now" to check current status. Anyway that's wat I've been doing n my ratings gen. stay awful. Plus no matter wat state its in, should it ever be as high as 700+?
Nvr mind. I get it: turn off screen, wait n check log.
I'm checkn now. Have feeln its still terrible. It was amazing when I 1st flashed virusROM. I can't figure wats changed. Now I'm bak to getting bout 3hrs (like b4 I rooted) vs. 12hrs+
Anyway, wat does an idle reading tell me? I have 'setCPU', I know its remarkable w the screen off (when I'm not using it) wat should I get or is good for screen on and during usage?
I guess I'll just in-apply setCPU profile to check n compare kernels n ROMs but isn't the screen off parameter built in to most kernels? Doesn't seem like idle reading tells me much.
K I modified the update interval to every 30 sec's, disabled the "setCPU" 'screen-off' profile n then idled (turned the screen off) n found this:
First reading: 590 mA
Sec. reading:556
Third:596
Fourth: 648....
It goes in like this, a couple times going above 800.
WTF!?

Looks like it's charging. Unless you changed the default settings, positive current is charging, negative current is draining (in the usage chart, and in the history).
The current utilities show battery current, not phone current.
Nope. I wish. Those r all - #'s
Also w CPU set relatively low; around 1240 MHz. I've also tried lower.
I Noticed that it is MORE efficient w WiFi turned ON. Actually much more so. Between 2-300mA vs 7-800mA using CDMA auto(PRL)
Seems reversed right? N when I remove the setCPU widget it spikes 100mA more. (setCPU only runs in the background if u use the widget) so when I remove if, battery usage should go down (or least not change) not go up.
Confused
I am getting lower #s w diff kernels. The above #s are w the new kernel. They were much higher b4. Now idle (w setCPU profile off) is between 2-300 mA (setCPU profile on I get 44mA). If I turn off WiFi (yes I mean off) then it spikes btween 5-800 mA idle (screen off)
I'm using:
-ROM; virusROM RC1B3.1,
-Kernel;bamf 4.3 (currently- I've tried plenty others)
I think its the ROM but I'm not willing to switch) I love everything else n it wasn't always like this.

ATT version of SG2 sucks your battery?! *Fixed*

Update and FIX!
My phone is no longer draining massive amount of batt life when idle (3-5% after 7 hours of idle), android system usage is now down to 5-15% instead of 78-97% from before.
My fixes.
1. Turn off data syncing
2. Turn off wifi while on the road (so wifi doesn't constantly look for signals).
3. Clear memory
Yes, att installs a lot of bloatware that constantly update for changes.
If killing those services AND disabling data syncing doesn't help your problem, then you have a kernel problem (like myself).
If this is the case, do the following:
1. Take phone back to att and get a replacement
OR
2. Re-flash your android with the STOCK kernel found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432
OR
3. Reflash with cognition x2 (reported to solve a member's problem, I didn't try this myself).
NOTE** This will root your phone, you will NOT get the exclamation mark during boot up, but kernel counter may be at "1" after this process.
Re-flashing my phone AND applying the three tricks I mentioned above worked for me..finally my phone is no longer crippled with crappy battery life and recharging is A LOT faster now.
I must be going crazy but this sg2 is killing me. I got it from Att yesterday and the battery life has been pretty HORRIBLE. (First time android user btw).
The phone will eat up 10% of my batter life after only 90 mins of idle. I checked the battery usage and Android OS is at around 78%!!! How do I fix this problem? I downloaded OS monitor and didn't really see anything that uses a lot of CPU, except for certain files syncing from time to time (but 2-3% usage usually).
Checked with battery spy and apparently the majority of the time, the phone was hovering around 200mhz 70% of the time and not deep sleep.
It's sad to have only 1.5 hours of display time with a battery of 45% left (7 hours total time)...coming from an Iphone 3gs, this is just unacceptable. I almost flashed to the 2.3.5 firmware but noticed it's NOT compatible with ATT's version of SG2.
I see people who have a total time of 2 days AND a screen time with 3 hours with 30% battery left. I wish I can get half that!
Running on 2.3.4, can't be the infamous drainage bug right? Thought that only happens with the 2.3.3s
Wifi on, application sync on, GPS off, brightness at 25%, using live wallpaper (the windmill). No active apps on. Downloaded aim, epocrates, battery monitor, cpu spy, and os monitor..rest of the apps are stock.
Update
According to my CPU spy
For the past hour that the phone was in idle
2:20mins at 1200mhz
4:52mins at 1000mhz
8:33 at 800mhz
1:28 at 500mhz
10:11 at 200mhz
33:36 in deep sleep
Currently Android CPU usage is @ 97%, display time of 7mins(2%)
2h 30mins since last charge (97% charge)..current power is 79%. Did nothing but idling and checking battery life.
So...that's 30 mins out of the hour in which my idling cellphone was hacking the pentagon....
Also the cellphone is a tiny bit warm to the touch (not cold)
I have 35% battery life remaining and have been unplugged for nearly 11 hours. This is significantly better than what I was getting with a Thunderbolt on Verizon, where I was needing to charge after about six hours of use. 11 hours and 35% remaining isn't the best in the world, but it's only been two days. The phone needs a few days to charge and discharge to determine true battery stats and will probably get better.
Being that this is your first Android battery life will not seem great but let it settle in for a few days it should get better.

If you only got the phone yesterday, its way to early to make any judgments on battery life. Battery needs at least 3-5 days to settle in and build consistent battery stats.
Also, what are you settings? Auto Brightness, Bluetooth, GPS, auto syn(exchange emal, gmail, facebook, etc). If your not using these, they should be OFF. It's easy to manually refresh email, etc.
I've seen some people reporting very high Android OS(over 50%) but still getting solid battery life.
I'm at 1hr display time, heavy texting. 72% left, been unplugged for 12hrs
no people what this guy is talking about is the android os bug. i have it too. hopefully an upgrade or different rom will fix it. my phone has been unplugged 11 hours with only 1 1/2 hour display but android os has ran for 52 minutes and now im at 32% battery life. once this bug gets worked out the battery life will be amazing.
I don't think that there is an android OS bug. My android OS shows as being 42% with 13hrs of moderate use and I am still at 67% battery remaining. This is by far the best battery use I have ever experienced on an android device! My cappy would not even come close to this performance and this is on stock ROM and kernel.

I'm very happy with mine, this was the first total drain on a new battery so I know it will only get better.
Total time: 18hr 25min
Display time: 4hr 48min
I think it's the system os, not the hardware. There were a few times when the battery didn't discharge itself at 7%/hour (had it idle for 3 hours and it went down like 2%).
And yes, everything is turned off except the sync app data and wifi. There's no option to turn off 4g btw. It's just weird how sometimes it's in this mode of power drainage, and then sometimes it doesn't drain much..but most of the time, it's draining.
I seriously doubt the phone can only run 2.5 hours worth of heavy usage or 12 hours of standby (it should last days!). If this is "normal" for android, then maybe I should have a visit back to att and exchange for an iphone (and I really don't to!)

I agree - as I said in the Android OS drain thread, even in "good" situations, Android OS displays way high on our systems. I think it's a reporting bug.
I dropped 2% in 5.5 hours completely idle (sitting on my shelf) last night - Android OS was at over 60%. It seems that so far for me, the higher it is, the better my battery life is.
I drop around 15-20% in 9 hours of being mostly idle at my desk at work - it's a weak-signal location so the radio eats much more battery.
One thing is that unlike first-generation GalaxyS devices and interim ones like the Infuse, the GS2 has a coulomb-counter type of battery gauge. This type of gauge sometimes needs to be calibrated with multiple charge/discharge cycles or it will misreport battery state of charge. (However, when calibrated, it's much more accurate.)
Edit: I do have some power management tweaks in the kernel I'm running, but they don't make that much off a difference except in some high-drain corner cases in my experience. I'll be releasing it sometime later this week depending on how well these antibiotics do their job.
Do i need to install a battery app to see the percentage? or we have a way?
Install this app:

If you see "DataTracker-FD" or "Fast Dormancy" as the top wake lock, go into dialer
dial *#*#9900#*#*
disable Fast Dormancy (FD).
By default, the Samsung Galaxy S II has Fast Dormancy support enabled. One of the goals of Fast Dormancy is to increase the battery life of a device, by limiting the amount of signaling between the phone and the cell network. But, when Fast Dormancy it is not enabled in the network and is enabled on the phone it ironically works the other way around, and actually drains more battery than before.

That applies to the I9100.
As far as I can tell, the I777 has FD disabled by default. (This may change once I9100 ROM ports start showing up)
Okay, charged my battery to 97%(I got a beep saying it's fully charged). Idled for the past 2 hours and 22 mins. Battery is at 86%.
According to the battery, my screen account for 2%, and the android system accounts for 97%.
This is a stock phone guys, I have no apps installed!

Just search up "battery indicator" in the Market and you'll get a few to choose from.
I too got mine yesterday and started tinkering around with installing apps and such to test out all functions before I rooted it and move onto cm7 most likely. The 1 things I noticed was that the battery was NOT completely full when it was first turned on at the store so once it got a little lower after playing with it I charged it up overnight. Today the battery was WAY BETTER and was not dead yet. I have been using it NON STOP today, rebooting it, testing it, trying to root it, rebooting some more, some time using tango to test it out, watched a Netflix movie, pretty much taking full advantage of it all day. I finally decided to charge it up and use my Captivate a bit. I didn't keep track of usage and times today but I KNOW it lasted a WAY LONGER time with all I was doing with it than my Cappy. Tomorrow I will check more out possibly before putting on a rom.
So LOOOONNNNGGGG STORY short make sure you charge it up once you get it before messing with it too much and then it will LAST LONGER.

After two nights of completely draining then recharging the battery to full, the battery has gotten significantly better. I'm trying to drain it again before I go to bed tonight but I don't think I'll make it.
I played the entirety of Toy Story 3 on max brightness, and only burned 20% of the battery!

Share your battery life & temperature please

Hey, so I've seen several people claiming fantastic battery life, etc. So, I am just wondering what's your experience in general. If you've got some free time and feel like typing, can you list several things like:
roms & kernel
stock/anker battery
battery life
screen time (and possibly voice call time or whatever else that seems to consume lots of the battery life)
highest battery temperature (I recently got pretty high so I was kind of worried)
and anything else you think might worth sharing (favorite actress? :silly
As for me, I recently installed Speed ROM 6.5 with stock kernel on stock battery
I only got 8 hours battery life to get to 14% with 3 hours of screen time (mostly used for game, browsing, and flipboard)
I got up to 100F (~40.5C) after playing a game for about 15-20 mins which made me leave it for a few mins to cool down. The next time I played the game again, it got up to 109F (~43.5C) after playing for 20-30 mins....
I am wondering whether that kind of high temperature is normal or not, and whether my battery life seems ok or bad; which is why I am hoping people can share their experience here. I haven't try using faux kernel though (might try it tomorrow in hope for a better batter life)....
So, again... if anyone got free time and feel like typing, please share it with me
From my g2 to this phone all I ever see is how bad the battery is. Never noticed a difference switching roms and battery across all smartphones I've used is allot what I expect.
Some people just can't be happy you know. Not to mention people never agree on anything (me included ).
Just my two cents

Well, first off, I am not trying to complain about the phone here. All I am asking/trying to find out is whether my experience is "normal" or not for Amaze.
I also come from G2 and obviously the battery life will be worse on the Amaze in general. This phone is 1.5ghz dual core and 4.3" display compared to 800mhz single core and 3.7" display on g2 with only extra ~300mah on the amaze.
I just want to know if my experience of getting only 8 hours battery life (with 3 hours of screen time consist of game and browsing) and getting a high temperature of 109F on the battery is considered "normal" or not for this particular phone. I only have one phone here; so, I don't know if my unit is bad unit or if it is normal for the Amaze.
So again, by all means, I am not trying to complain about this amazing phone here. I am just trying to find out if this is what normally happen with this phone.
And yeah I'm one of those guys that can never be happy :silly:. When I used G2, I want larger phone and faster performance. When I got Amaze, I want slightly larger screen and much better battery performance. So, yeah I can never be happy with my phone
The temperature thing is definately normal, it can get pretty high. I've had it go above 109f while on video chats on Skype. As for thebattery, that's normal too its just dependent on the user. U may have something that's running continuously in the background that your not aware of that's causing drainage. Many things that could be effecting the battery really

@OP, most likely you either have a bad battery, or your phone isn't sleeping properly on idle, or your phone has some problems with the RUU
Code:
Battery is ~1900mAh. If you use it for 3 hours active at around 400mAh, that is 1200mAh
700mAh left for idling the rest of the 5 hours. My idle current usage is around 9-40mAh as reported by Battery Monitor Widget(go to settings, change monitoring mAh to HTC Sensation to get a better reading)
700/5 = 120mAh/hour.... this means your phone isn't sleeping properly
Get CPU Spy... install it, then put your phone down for an hour without using it.... after that, does the report show that it goes to deep sleep?
When I got my phone and flashed the ENERGY rom, I had ~8 hours of total uptime (1-2 hours of usage)... i reflashed the RUU (do it on 100% battery), then it is better now
Now, on the Energy STOCK ICS rom with FAUX latest(0.12?)
Anker battery
15 hours of uptime
1-2 hours of screen-on time(roughly 2-3 hours of phone "awake" time)
don't remember battery temps, but i don't ever remember ti being that high
interactive governor, max frequency 1.4 ghz(to maximize battery life)
data on, autosync on, 2 gmail accounts synced only
My 100%->80% battery drains in 90 minutes, but after that, it slows down
I added the following to build.prop to tweak more battery life
Code:
# Power Save Tweaks
ro.ril.disable.power.collapse=0
pm.sleep_mode=1
If you really want to stretch out the battery, change the governor to powersave(forces processor to 192mhz always), but it definitely lags and I wouldn't recommend it unless you really really need to max battery life
EDIT: Go to Settings->power->see what is using my battery, post a screenshot (this one is 16 hours plus ~2 hours usage)
see the part that says "awake", and the part that says "screen on"? It should be correlate mostly -> when you use your phone's screen, the phone is awake.... when you turn off the screen, the device should be sleeping and not be awake

But, when I was not using it, it doesn't show that many "awake" status which is why I thought that Amaze battery performance is just that poor. From what I'm reading your a heavy user. Like me lol. The most I get is 6-8 hrs. With 1.5-2 hrs screen on time. Comparing that with others who get double digits It's nothing but I'm a heavy user. I stream Pandora daily surf the internet for 1 hr non stop, xda for most of the time. . And on weekends I'll have most 4 hrs. But 3.5 of those screen on with data streaming and screen on with out going off. Kinda like watching a netflix movie on mobile network. I use my phone like if it is my laptop now. I rarely use my laptop. I don't have internet nor WiFi to connect to. But if I tether I would run out of data faster so I avoid it. Besides battery draining faster.
I think there is a difference between:
1. leaving the screen on for a while, causing the phone and battery to get hot. Specially when gaming because CPU is constantly running.
2. And total screen on time accumulated of 2-4 hrs screen on. Which is achieved when sporadically checking phone for text, calls, email, quick surfing. Then shutting of screen through out the day.CPU goes to deep sleep phone stays cool.
Now that's what I call a heavy user.
Remember when phone is hot battery drains faster so you need to find a way to cool it down. Sometimes there are settings in cpu apps that when phone reaches certain temperature that app will force cpu clock down a lot as to use less power to start cooling down but causing lag.
I've got a 4 month old stock battery with latest faux kernel v.16 with battery saving tweaks on it. Energy rom stock 8-1. If there is anybody that reaches double digits with 6-7 hours 4g mobile streaming not wifi at all. 2 hrs without turning the screen off not 2 total hours. Please say I? I'd really like to know your secret.

Battery Current Widget... go to the options (top right), change the current selection(should be first row, then middle row) to "HTC Sensation" (it'll be more accurate)
that program doesn't accurately report mA if you don't change it(before changing, it'll be screen-off deep sleep 100mAh, but after switching, 10-40mAh)
I don't have Juice Defender on... autosync and data is on all the time
try w/o wifi on... i think wifi should take less battery power than data, but it always depends
on my screenshot, if you go back one and click on the screen-on... what does it say?
what does CPU Spy say about your phone going to deep sleep?

With the tweaks in my first post of the build.prop, BMW shows my idle around 10-40mAh..... 10 hours of idle = 100-400mAh. Note, this is with sync and data on... if you use Juice Defender or data off, probably less
So, idle, you use up 400mAh... you have 1500mAh left
1500mAh / 6 hours = 250mAh each hour.... with BWM, it shows that the current usage goes between 100-500mAh depending on how much screen brightness, data used, processor speed... If i choose powersave, I think it goes between 50-300mAh, but its really laggy, noticeable
300mAh * 6 hours = 1800... close enough
to avoid the 100%->90% fast drain, employ bump charging:
either
1) charge your phone to 100%. remove plug, wait for it to drop to 90%. replug it, charge to 100%... repeat for 5-10 times
2) charge your phone to 100%. remove plug, shutdown. Replug it, wait till the light goes green, boot up, charge to 100%, remove plug and shutdown, replug it , wait till light goes green etc.... do the cycle for 5-10 times
I was trying to see how much I could get out of my phone. I used my phone as little as I could, putting it into airplane mode when I slept.
ROM and Kernel: I was using the latest build of Energy and Faux Kernel v.15 at the time of the picture
Using stock battery, unfortunately I do not know what the highest battery temperature is.

unfortunately, for this device, the screen brightness and dual-cpu takes up a lot of power... if you see the pic below, when you use your phone(screen-on/awake), the battery % left has a sharp drop
I know for my old phone, LG Optimus T, I didn't have a data plan... the phone had data off all the time, and I got days out of using it(phone calls, wifi/browsing, checking gmaps offline)... once I enabled a data plan, it got half (like 1.5 days instead of 4)
if you calculate your usage... its possible
24 hours * 50mAh during idle = 1200 mAh
2 hours * 300mAh/hour during screen-on usage = 600mAh
total = 1800mAh, the capacity of your battery

So if I use either of those 2 methods above, is my battery 'cured" of the 100% to 90% fast drain? Or do I have to keep doing it over a period of time?

bump charging only helps you for that one time... you have to do this every time if you want max battery capacity
the problem is 2 things
1) the hardware/software is configured to maximize battery lifespan, meaning to slowly charge it and not go to 100% (high voltage, damages battery)...
2) the hardware/software is poorly coded, can't read the battery voltage properly...
either way, doing this means you are forcing current into the battery every time... your battery will hold less charge in a few months if you force it to full everytime... so you have to get a new battery aftera couple of months or live with lower capacity
I will just try to observe it better tomorrow using all those apps. With much less usage (1.5 hrs of screen time), i only got 11hrs of battery life. The screenshot below is for those 1.5hrs f screen time... I dont use jd and got email sync every 1 or 2 hr though....
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda app-developers app
I tested the idle-deep sleep capacity of the phone...
got 21 hours idle, 17 minutes screen-on (minimal use of phone) with 50% left
here is my phone with data and auto-sync ON, I got roughly 10 emails(all received during different times), had about 10 minutes of phone calls
NOTE: around the first part of the graph, you see the %-left spike up... I rebooted my phone then... and you can see that the battery-monitoring software/hardware part recalibrates itself to the real value
NOTE: cell standby-time of 21 hours used more battery than screen-on of 17 minutes.
When I used the phone for another 15 minutes, screen used 35% of battery while cellular standby dropped to 22%
tl;dr, using the phone, especially the screen, kills the battery a lot more... not using the phone = lasts a long time

I guess after using all those apps that you mention, I can kind of see that Amaze battery is just way worse than my G2. I was pampered with my G2 battery life for a week and now I realized how bad Amaze battery is. lol
I got 11% left after 12h 15min. That's about 1550mA used (I use stock battery).
almost 3 hours of screen time (3*350) = about 1050mA
25 mins of phone call = ~120 mA
about 8h 45 mins of idle = 360mA
So, yeah, it summed up about right this time (more accurate compared to my first result where I think I got a rogue app)...
**I am eagerly patiently excitedly waiting for a fully working stable CM9 by sport  **
On a side note, just wondering if anyone know if galaxy s2 have better, worse, or about same battery life? I am just curious since s2 is supposed to be amaze rival at t-mob....
Here's mine
Rom: Fourth Bar Jellybean Fusion
Kernel: Faux's Kernel, latest edition [August 15th]
Average Temp: high 90's
Average Battery Life: 5-6 hours.
Realize that what you do with screen on makes a significant difference- If I play organ trail(awesome zombie game styled after old school oregon trail game) I can play for a long time with little battery drain.. but it is a 2d game, and not going to be very processor intensive. If I play final fantasy 3, a 3d game, wow.. battery will drain much quicker, but then again, it IS a 3d game, and processor intensive. So HOW you use your phone is even more important than the screen on time.
With the latest faux(17) kernel, and 2-3 hours of screen on, the last few days I have 45% battery left after 15 hours since unplugged. Maybe 30-45 minutes was organ trail, but not much other gaming. The only changes I made, were made to the kernel, which I posted here(be aware that making all those changes will create some small lag changing screen orientation or opening app drawer, but haven't noticed anything else). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30298629&postcount=4
I also underclock to 1.2ghz- this doesn't create any lag, and no game or app I have used seems to work ANY better @1.5ghz than it does @1.2ghz. The main difference is the voltage it uses at max speed will be less @1.2ghz.
If you have weak 4g signal, there is an app i recently posted in some thread that puts it on 2g while screen off.. that has helped a lot too. If you have constantly good signal, then it won't make MUCH difference(tho 2g does drain less than 4g even with good signal), but it takes up to 2 seconds for it to switch to 4g after screen on. I can wait two seconds before opening an app, I don't care.
I assume you have used betterbatterystats to see what apps keep your phone from deep sleep, under partial wakelock?
And when I get obnoxious drain, but NOT because the phone isn't going into deep sleep.. I turn on the logging of an app called currentwidget- it can actually measure the MAH used while using specific apps.. the app itself can cause a bit of drain, but you'd only use it long enough to see what app is so battery inefficient. I have more about how to use that under battery savings part of the bible in my signature.
Edit: And I consistently get battery temperature of 77.7-77.9F, I always have, no matter the kernel or rom or settings.. perhaps it raises a TINY bit when I play some intensive game, but never noticeable. I am using an anker battery tho, so if you are using stock, perhaps that is a factor.

Whoa... I suppose there is someone out there with similar condition with mine... I almost thought I am the only one

Good to know that. I used a different app to check the current mah and it seems reasonable. I forgot to use better battery stat; but, based on cpu spy, the deep sleep time seems about right... I haven't updated my kernel to v17 (still on v15) and haven't done any edit that you mention since I was still switching roms to find the ROM that suits my need. I might try to do those stuffs today and hope for the best.
And btw, I am kinda jealous with your battery life... 45% left after 15 hours unplugged and 3 hours screen ON
I might get similar result; but my battery left will be 10% and those screen on are mostly on flipboard, xda, and browsing....
Like right now, 6h 10min unplugged, 40 mins of screen on (xda & flipboard), and I am down to 66% :crying:
**On a side note, I just get my hand on gs2 and I am just curious to try and see how good it is since gs2 seems to be such a hyped up device compared to amaze....

Just checked my usage. I'm sorta similar to yours in terms of screen on time. 11 h 43 m since unplugged, 39 min screen on (facebook, news, texts) and I'm down to 62%. My screen on time isnt that high, yet something else is draining my battery.
Awake time is 1 h 44m. Lots of Alarm Manager partial wakelocks. need to figure out what's causing those
