[Q] how do i change the kernel splash screen? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so i'm in the process of testing out the bali kernel by drhonk, came from categorically worthless....
i just wanna know how to change the kernel splash screen to further personalize my phone.
i understand that these kernel devs want to put their trademark image in there, but the kernel splash image for bali just doesn't match my overall theme....
i have seen the video about the lfs partition for captivates, but i dont wanna risk it since i have a vibrant running a vibrant based rom.(bionix v 1.3.1)
any ideas?

You can change the "BIOS" splash image, aka the lfs partition, but you can't change the kernel splash as it's hard coded into the kernel.

That is incorrect, you CAN change the kernel boot screen, the OP's question is how?

You can change it if you download a new kernel, or download the kernel developer's source code, change the screen and then recompile the kernel.
Those are tthe ONLY two ways...

I'd love to change or REMOVE the splash screen in any if not all of these kernels how do I do so I am using MIUI so themes mean something to me and that doesn't match any of my themes z.z

Again, if you read the post right above you, it's the same answer. You must change it in the kernel source, and then compile.
There is no way around it.

I am dealing with "chinese" Android 11 TV box, getting a copy of the kernel source is probably impossible, more likely it's not something that can be de-compiled (educated guess).
Are there generic public kernels that I could download?
Are kernels on Android tightly bound to particular device hardware or are they simply the core of linux and Android is linux shell?
(I would like to think of kernels NOT the same thing as firmware right? since the later is even lower level burried into HW ROMs?)
if generic public kernels exists please point me where I could download one, to try to change the "kernel splash bitmap"
After recompiling a kernel by downloading you mean same thing as what other refer to as flashing and image to the device?
Sorry about all my confusion, I appreciate any insights, Thank you!!!

Some points to note about the files...
All 3 files are completely stock and unedited
This build is a dev build, not a release build
This build is from a test Galaxy Nexus
This build is not odexed!
I know a lot of people are hacking up ports for other devices, so hopefully the non-odexed nature of this release together with the fact it includes the boot and recovery images will help make that happen.
All I ask is that you don't mirror the files elsewhere, that you link back to this topic rather than deeplinking the files and that if you use them you credit the source. So here they are...

to start is to make it to boot, using the changes in init.rc (however this is not nessesary as our boot.img already seems to have these, but needs to be edited a bit if i aint wrong,
then create boot.img
go for libs, try edit em to make it work for our armv6, boot and it should be starting
however editing libs takes good time,
i still wonder how Honeycomb were ported and not ics

The best way for anyone to help you get to where you want to be is for us to know for sure where exactly you are
I agree your best bet is to switch to Task 14 and if that happens to be your custom ROM already there are more steps to help you get rid of the lag than just the ROM.
If you can't figure which custom ROM you're on, it would be best, IMHO, to start by going to the development section and Task 14 thread.
Hope this helps.

also, what else could i do to get rid of the lag?
settings, about
flash pershoot's kernel if you dont already have it and overclock to 1.2 or 1.4 Ghz
install another launcher
It says
galaxy task 14 slim
And kernel says 2.6.36.3 [email protected] #1
So how do I do all that stuff...can someone give me a quick step by step?
I just downloaded CPU master and set it to on demand but the maximum it goes is 1000.....and so far I haven't noticed Any speed improvements
You need pershoot's kernel in the dev section.

"To install kernel modules:
Use Winrar (windows) or tar with the z option and unpack lib-2636.4.tar.gz
Push any module you desire to /data/local/modules (this is created by the update.zip)
Then, insmod it (you can do this via adb, in a gscript, or on the device in terminal."
I have unzipped it and have the lib folder and more stuff inside...how where do I put it? I can't find the data/local/modules...only data folder and then only .com stuff is in there
I tried running update.zip...from recovery mode but installation was aborted because it coudln't find the file or directory....where can I get it? looks like this update.zip is supposed to create the needed folders
ok...now i have just created those folders and added themodules but I can't insmod them through the adb shell..I can't even see them in the folder I put them in...only the 2.6.36.4-cyanogenmod+ but that wont "insmod"

[Kernel] Vigor ICS 3.0.16 v1.1 [Unsupported/Links Removed]

Hey guys, we have here a kernel built from the kernel source HTC released on 8/29/12 for Vigor. This kernel is a modified version of what came in the Official 3.14.605.12 ICS OTA except it is built from HTC's kernel source release. What else can I say?
Bugs:

Current features:
Perflock Disabled
Fast charge enabled using any power source - Thanks to Chad, I used his commits as a reference
Download:
Link Removed
Download Global OTA Compatible Version (Thanks to MicroMod for making it happen
Link Removed
Install:
Place zip on sd
Reboot to recovery (I use amon)
Install from zip
Select the zip file
The file will flash and then the phone will reboot to hboot
Once there, simple press power to select bootloader
Accept the update
It will install
Reboot your phone
????
Enjoy
Don't forget to go delete the PH98IMG.zip from your SD Card after boot.

How to disable perflock in an HTC kernel through source
Simple, open you source. Open the arch/arm/configs. Find the file vigor_defcofig. Find the following lines:
Code:
CONFIG_PERFLOCK=y
CONFIG_PERFLOCK_BOOT_LOCK=y
Change them to:
Code:
# CONFIG_PERFLOCK is not set
# CONFIG_PERFLOCK_BOOT_LOCK is not set
Perflock is now disabled. Build your source
Changing the kernel name
Open the scripts folder in the root of your source. Find and open the file makecompile_h. Find the lines:
Code:
echo \#define LINUX_COMPILE_BY \"`echo $LINUX_COMPILE_BY | $UTS_TRUNCATE`\"
echo \#define LINUX_COMPILE_HOST \"`echo $LINUX_COMPILE_HOST | $UTS_TRUNCATE`\"
Edit how you want:
Code:
echo \#define LINUX_COMPILE_BY \"`echo wildstang83`\"
echo \#define LINUX_COMPILE_HOST \"`echo vigor-ics`\"
Enjoy
Is this a sense kernel? I know...but noobs should have heads up.

As far as I know, absolutely nothing. I could be wrong though. Some of you that remember the Incredible or Thunderbolt will remember how the kernel that was in the ota for those devices and the kernel source released after the ota were different. HTC had added in minor fixes to the kernel source release that was not in the ota. I don't know if that is the case here, just a thought though.

Exactly, we can assume this kernel is no different from the one in the OTA. Unless of course someone else can prove otherwise.

If built as is from source, I'd say yes. Give the devs some times, you'll see them come out with perflock removed.

Right, this kernel was not intended to be custom in anyway whatsoever. It is simply a kernel built from source. I know I like stock things, I'm sure others do as well.

Should be fairly simple to insure a Sense 4 version. Just grab a sense 4 boot.img like newtoroots or whatever, open it up in android kitchen and drop in the zimage from my kernel's zip. Repackage the boot.img and fastboot flash it. ant, you should try it

I don't know anything about your phone, but your zip file is incorrect.
You want to put all the files except META_INF into a folder called system. Look in META_INF/com/google/android/updater-script and you will see this is what the recovery is expecting.
Also, add a boot.img since it will try to flash that as well.
This is what the root directory of the zip file should look like:
Code:
[email protected]:/android/work/moto/zipper# ls
boot.img META-INF system
[email protected]:/android/work/moto/zipper# ls system/
app bin build_proj etc framework media usr
arcsoft build_id build.prop fonts lib tts xbin

I read that thread a little- it looks like a lot of people trying different things. Also, use post numbers because it's page 17 on my computer
So, where did the updater-binary and script come from? The script has to match the rom, but I think the binary is a lot more forgiving. I think a binary from another ics or gb rom should work. Your phone uses yaffs, so maybe an older binary? I thought a lot of the ics devices were moving to ext3/4?
I think the stock recovery won't work. Usually, they will only accept zips that are signed by the manufacturer.

I think that is an error with the update binary. Maybe you can get one from a similar phone? It should be pretty generic, as long as it uses a similar file system/android version. So try to find a binary from an ics device that uses yaffs/MTD.

So the zip that I uploaded flashes, but it doesn't boot?
I think your working boot image is GB or Froyo and the new one is ICS. So maybe if I take the kernel from the ICS boot.img and add the ramdisk from your working one, then maybe it might work.
Maybe...
This is the new kernel with the old ramdisk. Again, flash at your own risk.
