so i'm in the process of testing out the bali kernel by drhonk, came from categorically worthless....
i just wanna know how to change the kernel splash screen to further personalize my phone.
i understand that these kernel devs want to put their trademark image in there, but the kernel splash image for bali just doesn't match my overall theme....
i have seen the video about the lfs partition for captivates, but i dont wanna risk it since i have a vibrant running a vibrant based rom.(bionix v 1.3.1)
any ideas?
You can change the "BIOS" splash image, aka the lfs partition, but you can't change the kernel splash as it's hard coded into the kernel.

You can change it if you download a new kernel, or download the kernel developer's source code, change the screen and then recompile the kernel.
Those are tthe ONLY two ways...

Again, if you read the post right above you, it's the same answer. You must change it in the kernel source, and then compile.
There is no way around it.

I am dealing with "chinese" Android 11 TV box, getting a copy of the kernel source is probably impossible, more likely it's not something that can be de-compiled (educated guess).
Are there generic public kernels that I could download?
Are kernels on Android tightly bound to particular device hardware or are they simply the core of linux and Android is linux shell?
(I would like to think of kernels NOT the same thing as firmware right? since the later is even lower level burried into HW ROMs?)
if generic public kernels exists please point me where I could download one, to try to change the "kernel splash bitmap"
After recompiling a kernel by downloading you mean same thing as what other refer to as flashing and image to the device?
Sorry about all my confusion, I appreciate any insights, Thank you!!!
So after a couple of days of reading guides on the internets, I've been able to compile a mostly stock kernel that incorporates some of the changes made by joe85 in his NOLIGHTS Kernel. This kernel is stock other than the changes outlined below. The anykernel scripts keep your existing RAMDISK intact. If you had init.d support/other RAMDISK mod(s), it will still be present after flashing this kernel.
mKernel_v1.3
-Added TUN module for VPNC support
-Changed Display Maximum PWM from 232 -> 255
-Changed Display Minimum PWM from 8 -> 6
-Dimmed LEDs (from 20 mA -> 2 mA) or turned off completely
-Remove LED notification timer (does not shut off until dismissed)
------NotifyTimerOn versions use default timer to shut off notification LED

Adding overclocking has proven to be too much for me to do (more info on challenges of asynchronous dual core OC here. There isn't really much of an update going from 1.2 -> 1.3. I just re-did the changes from stock and tracked them using github. I did leave out the setting that joe85 made that allowed users to set a LED brightness via cmd line. There are 2 versions - mKernel_dim_1.3 for dim capacitive LEDs and mKernel_LEDoff_1.3 for capacitive LEDs which are always off.
You need a 2.3.4 based ROM for it to work and it can be flashed from recovery.
You can also flash it via joeykrim's Flash Image GUI with runs on your phone and is compatible with HBOOT 1.50. LINK!
Thanks to koush for the anykernel scripts and joe85 for all of his work (I just copied it into the new 2.3.4 kernel).

From my limited understanding android kernels and upgrading them, if the ROM you're using has it already removed, it will still be removed after flashing this kernel. CIQ removal is just done in the ramdisk. The compiled kernel makes a zImage and that, along with the modules for wimax & wifi, is all that is in the zip. The scripts in the zip extract your current boot.img, replaces the old zImage with the one in the zip, and re-makes boot.img (at least that's how I envision it working...could be wrong).

removing carrier IQ is big task and goes beyond the kernel, as you stated.
there was a guy over on SDX dev's that did it by removing the scripts from the framework.res apk. so basically the programs were still on the phone, but when you fired the phone up they didn't start.
that is the only way that i am aware of that it can be done. it's a lot deeper than the kernel and deleting apk files from the system.
EDIT** and when i say that is the only way i know of, that doesn't mean it is the only way.
Will this kernel work on Synergy 475 with EXT4 Opt.?

Current features:
Perflock Disabled
Fast charge enabled using any power source - Thanks to Chad, I used his commits as a reference
Download:

Install:
Place zip on sd
Reboot to recovery (I use amon)
Install from zip
Select the zip file
The file will flash and then the phone will reboot to hboot
Once there, simple press power to select bootloader
Accept the update
It will install
Reboot your phone

How to disable perflock in an HTC kernel through source
Simple, open you source. Open the arch/arm/configs. Find the file vigor_defcofig. Find the following lines:
Code:
CONFIG_PERFLOCK=y
CONFIG_PERFLOCK_BOOT_LOCK=y
Change them to:
Code:
# CONFIG_PERFLOCK is not set
# CONFIG_PERFLOCK_BOOT_LOCK is not set
Perflock is now disabled. Build your source
Changing the kernel name
Open the scripts folder in the root of your source. Find and open the file makecompile_h. Find the lines:
Code:
echo \#define LINUX_COMPILE_BY \"`echo $LINUX_COMPILE_BY | $UTS_TRUNCATE`\"
echo \#define LINUX_COMPILE_HOST \"`echo $LINUX_COMPILE_HOST | $UTS_TRUNCATE`\"
Edit how you want:
Code:
echo \#define LINUX_COMPILE_BY \"`echo wildstang83`\"
echo \#define LINUX_COMPILE_HOST \"`echo vigor-ics`\"
Enjoy
Is this a sense kernel? I know...but noobs should have heads up.

As far as I know, absolutely nothing. I could be wrong though. Some of you that remember the Incredible or Thunderbolt will remember how the kernel that was in the ota for those devices and the kernel source released after the ota were different. HTC had added in minor fixes to the kernel source release that was not in the ota. I don't know if that is the case here, just a thought though.

Exactly, we can assume this kernel is no different from the one in the OTA. Unless of course someone else can prove otherwise.

I don't know anything about your phone, but your zip file is incorrect.
You want to put all the files except META_INF into a folder called system. Look in META_INF/com/google/android/updater-script and you will see this is what the recovery is expecting.
Also, add a boot.img since it will try to flash that as well.
This is what the root directory of the zip file should look like:
Code:
[email protected]:/android/work/moto/zipper# ls
boot.img META-INF system
[email protected]:/android/work/moto/zipper# ls system/
app bin build_proj etc framework media usr
arcsoft build_id build.prop fonts lib tts xbin

I read that thread a little- it looks like a lot of people trying different things. Also, use post numbers because it's page 17 on my computer
So, where did the updater-binary and script come from? The script has to match the rom, but I think the binary is a lot more forgiving. I think a binary from another ics or gb rom should work. Your phone uses yaffs, so maybe an older binary? I thought a lot of the ics devices were moving to ext3/4?
I think the stock recovery won't work. Usually, they will only accept zips that are signed by the manufacturer.

I think that is an error with the update binary. Maybe you can get one from a similar phone? It should be pretty generic, as long as it uses a similar file system/android version. So try to find a binary from an ics device that uses yaffs/MTD.

So the zip that I uploaded flashes, but it doesn't boot?
I think your working boot image is GB or Froyo and the new one is ICS. So maybe if I take the kernel from the ICS boot.img and add the ramdisk from your working one, then maybe it might work.
Maybe...
This is the new kernel with the old ramdisk. Again, flash at your own risk.

Stock Kernel with embedded .ko modules (package revision 121216)
This is a modified stock boot.img (original available HERE) that includes unmodified zImage compiled by me from kernel source with all modules embedded inside a single neat boot.img file using realtime injection from boot ramdisk.
This is for International One X+, NOT for AT&T
This means you will get working wifi with any ROM that previously had problems and with no extra flashing/tampering with *.ko files.
Just fastboot the boot.img and you're set.
You can use this package and any of its parts, scripts and ideas inside. Feel free to mention my name
USAGE:
Windows - unzip the package anywhere, use oxp_flash_kernel.bat to flash, follow simple instructions.
Linux/OSX - fastboot flash boot boot.custom.stock.img as usual.

Embedding framework for kernel developers
I'm also releasing the scripts I used to automate the embedding process for other kernel developers to use.
It is pretty simple, but does its job. The sample platform contains stock kernel above.
MAP:
bootimg.base - put your base "boot.img" here
zImage.new - put your desired kernel zImage here
structure.new - contains sample init.rc, elitekernel.sh with deploying script and modules folder for your .ko's . Everything in this folder will go to rootfs.
(you will need to change the init.rc and transfer the script fire block if you change the base img file)
USAGE:
"sh extract" - extracts and primes the base boot.img, do not modify anything outside the 3 folders above, it will get deleted on compile.
"sh compile" - injects modules and scripts into the ramdisk and compiles a new boot.img to new "bootimg.out" folder.
Feel free to modify to suit your envirnment and comment.

Antutu broke it, if you run that benchmark, it will break the CPU scaling badly until you reboot. Don't' ask why, I have no idea.
Thanks for the quick reply. No idea why it doesn't happen on the stock kernel?

...and is Zram enabled in EX6? If so, how do I configure it?
BTW, thanks for your work
