Hey guys so I just got a replacement phone after I bricked my last one
Anyway I powered on the phone and it had 2.1stock I then rooted the phone and it went fine however last night my phone updated to stock 2.2 and I think I lost root. I still have SU however Titanium backup says that root failed.
Is there a way to root the phone from stock 2.2 or do I need to Odin back to stock 2.1 and root again?
Thank you for your help

Very sorry if this is a stupid question.
My Dad has a SGS2. I rooted it for him, and installed SpeedMod Kernel for him (way back in October)
He is currently running 2.3.4.
The ICS OTA / Kies or whatever, is coming soon.
Will he still be able to upgrade his phone whilst rooted?
Will the update perform successfully?
Will he lose data?
I'm asking because on other devices (HTC), if you perform a official update when you are rooted, it results in a bricked phone!
Thanks!

Not sure myself to be honest but the best thing to do is wait till you read from here that the official roms have been released through KIES. Then unroot your dad's phone and then feel free to upgrade then once you are unrooted and back to official stock firmware.
If you're still running stock firmware, you should still be able to get Kies upgrades. Obviously if you upgrade via Kies your phone will be unrooted as a stock kernel will overwrite your existing kernel.
If you find you are unable to get Kies updates, you will have to flash stock firmware back on to the phone as suggested by my learned colleague, Mr Suarez, before you can upgrade via Kies.
Any upgrade via Kies shouldn't result in loss of data unless you get a message before you begin the process that says you will lose data. Tho obviously backing up anything/everything important before upgrading is obviously recommended.
I see you're looking for ironclad guarantees about a couple of things, and frankly, when you start running non-stock firmware on your phone you should expect these to go out the window, i.e there aren't any (and even when you are running stock nothing is absolutely guaranteed).
Better not to tempt fate IMHO.
Many thanks for the replies fellas!
I appreciate it
Thanks for tips!
Yeah, I guess I'll do a NANDroid backup too...
TBH, I don't think my Dad is too bothered about being rooted on ICS, so it doesn't matter if he loses root.
On Gingerbread now, he doesn't use many root apps, apart from SetCPU and adfree.
But thanks for the helpful advice guys!

OK, sorry for the bump.
My Dad is still running the same setup 2.3.4 & SpeedMod kernel. The kies isn't detecting the phone...
But today he got the OTA notification to update ICS directly on his phone.
Is it safe to do it? So the update will override the SpeedMod kernel, but the phone will still boot and work fine? Not bothered about losing root - just want to know the upgrade will be successful.
Anyone can clarify please? I've done a NAND back up to be safe. the worse for worse - do i just restore the backup?
P.S - I have CWM on it - will that effect it?
Can't say, but should be ok, worst case you cab flash back using Odin if something happens.

Didn't work for me.
I had flashed the leaked release of ICS onto my phone and so when the official release came out I went straight to the OTA update (I'm on O2 in the UK) And the there was no available update (However my Dad also has the S2 and it wasn't there for him either).
So I tried the kies software to only find it gave me a message saying my phone wasn't supported/update not available for phone. It did however allow my dads stock firmware to be.
Hope that helps and you might have better luck but it will remove any root you have because I'm pretty sure it also updates the Kernel.
Thanks a lot guys! I used ODIN to flash the latest ICS version - all good now! He is unrooted, but still had CWM, so can he still receive future OTA's and make NANDroids?
You need root in order for CWM to work and for you to make a backup. Here is my guide to rooting your phone again. Very simple: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1625184

Yes, when you update your phone you would have lost root and CWM. Just use the guide I posted above to regain root and CWM so your dad that can make his NANDroid backups.

1. kill you brother
2. you can't root the official 2.3.6 - the exploits in it have been patched up, you need to flash the unsecure kernel from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1414565 then you would be able to either flash a new rom or root the one you have
I thing you can't root stock int 2.3.6
..you need to flash custom kernel to root it.At least there was no way when I bought it.

I assume you are now on ICS.
Try ExynosAbuse, it's one-click.

No I didn't update it I believe it still to be gingerbread. Wasn't sure whether it would brick my phone, updating it whilst rooted.
This guide might help you. It has a separate section for Gingerbread.

Sorry, I thought you wanted to ROOT. My bad.
If you update via OTA/Kies you'll get unrooted. In case you don't wanna "touch" your device in anyway.

I uupdated my phone using Kies and it didn't unroot it. What can I do? I Still have superuser etc.
Flash a stock rom. There's CWM flashable versions floating around here somewhere (look in General/search), or you can get Odin flashable ones from the usual places (Samfirmware, AndroidFirmwares.net). Ordinary stock kernel in rom package will overwrite your rooted kernel.

I'm not sure how to flash roms. Reason I want to unroot it is because I want to send it back to samsung. Do you think resetting it to factory settings would work?
Newbie question here:
So I got a SM-G900t today. So far all I did was update it to 5.1.1 with Kies.
Then I changed the .tar with Odin to root it. Now it is stuck on endless boot loop, I've tried all the stuff to get out.
So I guess the .tar file was bad. How can I find the stock .tar or one that will root my phone?
Thanks
Chris

No root yet.

I will have to try that.
I put it back to stock, updated to 5.1.1 and rooted it 3 times yesterday. Each time soon as it was rooted the camera stopped working (just like your link says)
So right now it is on 5.1.1 and I just disabled all the crap apps. The only reason for me to root is to delete the crap.
Thanks
