How do you think the Samsung Charge will stack up to the competition? Not that exciting next to other Verizon upcoming LTE enabled devices? Or better than the rest?
Its a galaxy s with a better screen. It has the same internals. The thunderbolt has a better processor and a decent screen. The bionic is going to be a dual core monster and the sgs2 will be out later with the best of all worlds. The charge is a last generation smart phone with a new screen. I wouldnt put my money on it winning any contests.

Do we know if SGS2 will have LTE modem in it? I hope it does, but the only confirmed model of SGS2 is for AT&T currently. SGS2 4G will make my year.

Well there is a screen shot somewhere showing SGS2 coming to VZW but thats not a lot to go on. Still, I can't imagine they would ignore the VZW market. Likely they will just be months behind, the way the fascinate was to the captivate

This generation is different, though. Verizon, and only Verizon, is pursuing LTE for its next-gen data -- since EVDO sucks and is deeply limited. And since Voice over LTE (VoLTE, which is why I guess all the Verizon 4G phones have the lightning motif) doesn't exist yet and you need 1x and 3G data for full coverage anyway, this means that Verizon models will need two separate radios instead of just being able to swap the GSM chip for the CDMA chip. LTE is even bulkier than WiMax, because it requires a SIM card and MIMO as well.
So while AT&T and T-Mo (if the latter continues to exist) will get something basically equivalent to the SGS2, Verizon and Sprint will end up with a bigger form factor -- like the Epic or Charge. And we'll have to wait a while this time too.
AT&T is going to HSPA+ short term for "4G" and LTE is their long term plan, so they'll need the same LTE radio as VZW phones when they decide to start up their LTE network and phones/devices.
I'm waiting.
If I go 4G, I want more than just 4G. I want dual core, good battery, front camera, better screen, hdmi out, etc.
Since LTE is so new, I may wait a year anyways. I may pick up the Sony Xperia Play so I can have the latest Android with all the above except 4G while adding real game controls.

I have an Infuse and plan to stay with it until it comes off contract, but I looked at the SGSII page on AT&T's website and it says 4G HSPA+... Really? Is it really only HSPA+? Or does AT&T want to repel all customers by advertising a Ferrari as having a 20HP Ford engine?
LTE is on a different model and comes out later. This one is HSPA+ only.
I'm glad it doesn't have LTE. I like having a reasonably sized phone with good battery life.
Haven't you noticed that Verizon customers are screwed? They get a choice of outdated underpowered phones, or battery-hogging fatties that provide no speed benefits for a significant portion of the population. In fact, apparently many of Verizon's LTE phones don't work well at all in non-LTE service areas.
I won't see LTE anywhere near where I live for years (probably not until my next upgrade cycle at least) so I'm glad this doesn't have LTE.

No, it does not have LTE. LTE on AT&T is only available in a very small amount of cities. However, AT&T is not good at advertising just as you are not good at researching....

Your ****ing kidding me right? You can't be that dumb. It's not software related. There is NO LTE modem in the device. Are people seriously this gullible?
They use the same systemUI.apk where all your 3G, H, and H+ icons are located and just change xml's for different devices.

And the presence of icons means nothing. A lot of frameworks are designed in a generic manner to ease software maintenance. We've got bootsplashes for Korean devices in our param.lfs for example.

Because by marketing regulations, AT&T can call their HSPA+ network 4G.
I'm surprised no one's complaining about TMO's less competent HSPA+ network.
Its just how oil companies can market their stuff as full synthetic as long as they have an X% of synthetic oil in overall volume.

In the "post your stock firmware " thread most, but not all were identical. Could odd balls possibly have different hardware? I can early upgrade on 10/16 from Infuse. If LTE version comes out wouldn't one be able to disable LTE radio/network like other bands? Would think it also would have hsdpa+ as a fallback??

At$t also has not finished the backhaul on its Hspa+ network, so most places do not even get that.
But the nice thing about hspa+ once it is done everyone will have access to a 21mbps network, that is pretty damn fast.
The no lte does not bother me a bit considering At$t hasn't even completed their +hspa.

No, the LTE version just entered field testing. It is different sized phone and uses a different CPU (1.5Ghz Qualcomm vs 1.2GHz Exynos) as well. So, there will not be a mix up.
I guess the way AT&T advertises is they write 4G in bold letters with a star which says 4G speeds by HSPA Network.

Is LTE even that much faster than H+'s 21mbps? I don't see the point of getting an LTE phone for that extra speed while it drains your battery. How much speed do you really need to play Words with Friends? I'll stick with H+ phones

Agreed. They used the verbiage, 'initial launch window' which leads me to believe they're doing this to lure people directly into their stores initially. Not sure how long but it definitely won't be the permanent price. If I can get any more solid info or source material, I'll update - but no promises.

That's my issues with it.
1. I just got the sga2 and the size of it is perfect. When I hold it in my right hand I can very easily swipe down the notifications or if I am typing with it is my ritgh hand and using my thumb I can do it easily and fairly accurately. With a bigger screen I don't know it will fit as nicely, in fact I am pretty sure it wont. I have the bionic and it drives me crazy because it so big and the thunderbolt is the same way.
2. Rom development learning curve. When the lye came out for Verizon there was a tremendous amount of issues ans bugs with data switching from 4g to 3g and half the time you were left without any data. It will not be as easy for the devs to make Roms or even port them because for some it will be a new concept. Right now we have a few great roms to choose from. When the sga2 is out it will be a while until there is a any Roms. If anything I will wait until the last couple of days of my return period which is about 22 days from now, to see the progress of development, before I think of switching. Like I said the screen size is an issue for me. If it doesn't fit as nice as this phone then I definitely wont switch.
3. Battery life- even though the skyrkt has a bigger battery the battery life will be significantly less than what we got. All lte devices have shirty battery life, bionic, thunderbolt etc. I know this because I own them and as you can see which phone I favor because I am writing this post frlm it. The sga2 is by far the best phone out there, tried them all. Any deviation from this phone could possibly make it no longer "the perfect phone". I have not tried the phone yet so at this point I am just assuming, or speculating.

Comparing Verizon's LTE phones to att lte phones is that both are different in terms the phones. To my understanding that Verizon's phones has 2 radios one for their cdma aka 3G network and the other for lte where Att will only have one except their lte is going to be more then likely a different band but since lte is gsm, should not need another radio. So trying to compare verizon's lte to 3g switch off is not going to be the same as att lte which from what I have been reading about will be running on 700 and 1700 mhz bands which is probably why att will not have as many problems as verizon since att currently uses for their Hspa *3G* and Hspa+ *4G as marketed* runs off 850 and 1900 mhz bands, so building an lte radio to run quad band should not be an issue and then running a quad band for 2G should not be an issue in the same radio where Verizon's 3G network as they call it is cdma and their lte network should be running off of 700 mhz and 1700 mhz as well as falls back to cdma. The issue I can see happening with att is the 3G/4G/LTE back to Edge aka 2G will cause dropped calls and slow data or no data, like it does from hspa/hspa+ back to Edge. My sgs2 has been proven otherwise but it still can happen because the handoff is not perfect.
I am not sure if battery life is going to take a serious hit as I do not have lte in my area at the moment with att but what would have been nice to test the skyrocket compared to the og sgs2 if both were running the same cpu, that would be the true test. A good test would be the T-mobile sgs2 versus the skyrocket, that would be a way to see if the battery life takes a hit since both phones are similar in specs.

There's no way they could hide it lol. The phone would have to be thicker to include a wimax and LTE radio. Again, there's no phone in the US that has this and I assure you the photon isn't going to be the one. There's been plenty of complete tear downs/videos and a wimax radio was alone. No LTE. I doubt they would "hide it" then reveal it. That doesn't really make sense to a marketing standpoint; if it had an LTE radio sprint would market the **** out of the photon to make money since the photon would be the only phone in the world with that combo.
I've been told many times by Motorola & Sprint that it has LTE, and we will get it in a software update. I am going to wait and see. Who knows, we may be surprised, although I am not counting on it.

And the phone wouldnt be that much thicker at all if it was anyways its already a lil thick compared to samsung phones... The only tear downs ive seen couldnt get past the metal plating covering the radios.. If they did the lte+wiimax chip is a pretty simple looking chip so easily missed.. I work for corporate Sprint and can say that the Motorola Photon 4G does not have a LTE chipset in it nor do any of the smartphones in current product line up have one either. Go into a Sprint S&R Center and have a TSR show you the MoBo of a MoPho and you'll see the chipset is a WiMax one. The Sprint market where LTE has been turned up is immaterial in the sense that they are not any devices currently available to take advantage of it. I would suggest people to tune into CES 2012 where we will make announcements pertaining to various technologies to be deployed as well as new products and services

So if us cellular has a LTE network in select cities, could the electrify have the lte radio? Or do they have another 4G phone in the works?
Now would it be possible that they made the photon with the beacem 500 for the purpose of having a test phone for the network for when they were testing their lte network?

Sprint store reps don't know
I was due for a phone update and asked a rep in one of the Sprint corporate store about the LTE 4G that is coming out and does the current phones have the hardware to be able to use this and was told that all of the current top 4G phones (Galaxy II s, HTC Evo 3D, Motorola Photon, etc..) will be able to use the LTE 4G. Now that I have a Photon and will be stuck for 22 months should I return it and wait for a LTE 4G phone to upgrade to? I thought it was probably tgtbt that the current phones would be able to support the new LTE 4G. I probably should contact someone in Sprint about what customers are being told to make a sale!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is the ability to use 4g LYE in the software or hardware of the phone? I have an LTE sim card that came with my htc vivid, but as I understand (which isn't much), I will have to wait for an update or custom ROM that includes an LTE radio. I've also read that LTE phones have different modules in which case I would never get to use it on my i777. This phone is great and there's no way I'm trading it in for a Skyrocket just for LTE when everything else it's so much better on the i777.
Can any one tell me then, will I ever get to use LTE?
Hardware, google is your friend sir

Just to add to the above answer
LTE and our Exynos chipset dont get along right now, hence all the LTE phones having snapdragon processors. Thats the main kicker for me. and LTE is in very few places is ****ing stupid that at&t is starting to focus even the smallest amount on LTE devices

Seriously?
Thanks, this is just the answer I was looking for, I do live in an LTE coverage area bad for me though

I live in an area that should have great coverage but I still only get an average of 6Mbps, would updating my APN settings from the old wap.cingular help improve my data service?

Oh here we go
Unstoppable force meets unmovable object!
OP question answered. Search was not engaged. Thread closed.
I was looking around over at the Sprint Community on the Sprint website and saw this under a thread titled "Motorola Photon 4G Chip set".
XDA won't let me post links, so you'll have to copy and paste... sorry

"ok so for ***** and giggles, and border line begging and pleading, i convinced a good friend who works in a VZW store to let me expirement with an active 4G LTE sim card (on the condition that i not take any screen shots or steal it). but any ways after about 10 minutes of the phone reconfiguring its self and rebooting ( 2 times) I was using my Photon4G and sufrfing on VZW's LTE network. take it for what its worth but it looks promising. Oh and by the way the photon is wicked fast with that kind of data speed, but it drains that battery i lost 35% in about 45 min."
Now, I dont have a Verizon SIM to try this out, but maybe one of you guys do...
Well that's a cool story bro and all except the Photon doesn't have an LTE chip. I'm not about to go troll on some other message board, but "the condition that i not take any screen shots" combined with the lack of details in "about 10 minutes of the phone reconfiguring its self and rebooting (2 times)"... yeah. Someone is either really confused or lying.
Obvious troll is obvious

I don't doubt that he isn't telling the whole truth there... I wouldn't think that it would be that simple to make it work. But, I've been looking around on the issue and found this, just thought I'd share...

He's actually telling the truth. My friend has a Photon and works for Verizon and he's done this. I couldn't get it to do it, but his story matched exactly. He put in the SIM and it fiddled around with it tossing the 4G icon on and off then rebooted, then speedtests showed 30+mbit speeds. The photon does have an LTE chip btw, confirmed by our motorola rep.

Tell him pics, video or GTFO. Ask your friend how he did it and show you so you can inform us how to try it out.

oh no... this thread is gonna be a broken record again.
reps talk alot, and i bet that rep doesnt even know what LTE stands for. (if you just now googled it... "now you know and knowing is half the battle. GI Joe!") ask the rep to name all the current moto phones, their, chipsets, and operating frequencies correctly then MAYBE i would believe them. But as it sits now, you could probably play pictionary with Motorola phones and that rep would not be able to match the phones with their names.
Tegra 2 devices don't support Lte that is the reason it took the Bionic so long to come out then when it dropped it was sporting an Omap processor. I've never seen a Tegra device that uses Lte. Take the HTC One X for example has a Quad core Tegra it Supports HSPA+ but the American version which uses Lte and HSPA+ has a S4 chip. Maybe I'm wrong but that seems most logical to me

tegra 3+ will support lte, the s4 supports lte, omap supports lte. so unless we get the same cpu in the razr/gnexus, the next photon will have the s4 or tegra 3+... same rules apply to teh sgs3 for anyone thinking about it (which means that yea if its s4 and photon 2 is s4 then ALL the high end phone son sprint will have teh same cpu/gpu... oh noes! benchmarks galore!)
so with that tidbit tegra 2 wont support lte

Since when is the Beceem BCSM350-L chip LTE compatible?
correct me if i a wrong but even if this is possible isnt the photons sim locked for towers in the states
