[Q] after 1-click root, can I OC?

Just started reading about my Eris today and all the "aftermarket" stuff I can do with it. I've spent the last couple hours reading through here and androidforums but can't find the exact answer I'm looking for.
I did the "HTC Eris 1 Click Root App" and all went well. I've also installed SetCPU from this site. I'm sure there is something else I have to do b/c SetCPU is giving me no options to go above 528. It appears I have to install a patch of some sort from this thread: (can't link but it's the "Overclock Patch and update.zip" thread in the Eris development area) but do I install the patch.txt, the zimage or update and what do I do after they are installed?
I've read plenty of talk about other ROMS's but I'm fine (for now) with the stock one. Can I OC without installing an entire new ROM?
Thanks in advance!
J
you need to flash an overclockable rom, try flashing this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=679194
or
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745708
those are just two of the many roms, if you need help flashing it dont bother making a new thread, do a google search, look on the xda wiki, or PM me.

After doing some more reading I would like to find a ROM that OC's above 700 automatically, removes the extra garbage that Verizon loaded (footprints, amazonmp3, etc...) and is a one stop shop. It looked like both of those you linked have some things missing or there are other step once you initially flash it.
When I do flash a new ROM I loose everything right? I'll have to re-load all my aps and stuff...
I'm going to go try and read up on flashing, NANDing and backing sutff up but will probably end up PMing you to make sure I got it all right.
Thanks!
J
P.S. had to remove your links so I can post my response.
Also, what's the difference in a ROM that has "sense" and one that doesn't? What am I missing or gaining?

Sense is HTC's custom user interface. It consists of a custom theme, app launcher, and many different apps and widgets. The best way to find out what you are gaining and losing is to try out a sense rom and a non-sense (or "vanilla") rom. Always do a nand backup before flashing new roms. You never know what could go wrong.
As for the overclocking, the kernel the rom uses determines if you can overclock and how high you can go with it. Most roms are clocked to 710 as this is the highest and most stable speed that will work for all eris's. Some phones are able to get up to 804 without freezing or crashing but not all can. DO NOT check set on boot till you find a stable speed or you can get stuck on a boot loop.
Feel free to pm me if you have any more questions. I'm not a dev but I'll try my best to help you out.

[Q] Rooting 2.2.1 and overclocking

Hey I just got my Lg oPtimus one P500 and I want to know how to root it, superoneclick doesnt work for some odd reason (I think I needed to download some huge apk program or something, idk, I'm not much of a techie) and I need to know how to root it! (is there an app I can download? z4root didn't work)
If I root is it gonna erase all my data?
and where can I find a link to information on how to overclock my phone. cause I want to get it a bit faster but I don't want to blow it up :\
id appreciate help, thanks!
Go back to ROM 2.2 and then Install z4root. It's pretty straight forward.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
You can also use SuperOneClick.
Here is a guide for doing everything from rooting through to custom ROM with lots of explanation.

don't forget to say thanks
ok thanks ill check out the website
zd4root doesnt work its really annoying! i downloaded the correct apk file installed it ran it...it begins the rooting process then just quits. and everything is normal.

hi ya, i have just come from the pulse which i know is totally different, and the wildfire, which wasnt rooted, this phone is amazing compared to them, so far francos rom to me is perfect and each kernel he releases is perfect for me aswell.
oh and to the OP, im not sure about using the other roots but with gingerbreak, i installed it on the phone, run it, it rooted it and put superuser on there, i then used the guide and put on the custom recovery and francos rom, all in all it was very easy..
i tried the gingerbreak v1.20 on v10c 2.2.1 indian stock rom and it worked perfectly.
btw i broke my old optimus and bought a new one.
so sad my dead optimus

[Q] rooting first time :)

Hello all,
this is my first time rooting and i have read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616, im downloading the files as i type, so my question is, it it hard to root my thunderbolt? also ive read the pros and cons, and i would also like to know from u rooters, what do u like from a rooted phone?
for those who want to just the question, here u go:
1) it it hard to root my thunderbolt? (following the link)
2) u rooters, what do u like from a rooted phone?
yes im excited to attempt to trying to root my thunderbolt ^^
It's not hard, just fallow the instructions to the letter and of course make sure you have adb set up and the proper drivers installed. After that it's pretty much a cut and paste affair.
Second question: Root = freedom, simple enough.
I went to Youtube to setup my adb.

also ty i appreciate answering my questions!
Before you flash any ROM, do yourself a huge favor, and read the OP (original post) and then read it again. Follow the directons carefully. After your first time its like riding a bike. Search the thread before asking questions too since you will likely get hammered by people for asking questions already asked and answered. Good luck.
BAMF is a great ROM, you might search later in the thread for RC5, Adryn leaked a preview with a different kernel than RC4.

You'll need an MR2 radio for that ROM, I recommend the one from the OTA. You can find it in the development thread, it gets flashed through hboot.
Edit: And yes, the ROM you flash will have busybox built in. And +1 for the post above mine, use the search function, it works well. When you do have a question post it in that ROM's thread or keep it in the Q&A section. Best of luck to you.
Hey there! Yes, this is my first post in this forum I believe, but I've been a heavy lurker since December. Currently, my tbolt is rooted and has been for a few months. I'm running BAMF 3.0 RC4 and I can honestly say, the pros far outweigh the cons. A few of my favorite pros is the ability to run a wider selection of apps, more control, the speedier updates from devs compared to Verizon/HTC, overclocking, better controlled over battery life, no bloat removal..the list goes on and on. Basically, being rooted allows me to make changes to my phone to fit my needs. And yes, it is incredibly easy IMHO to root this phone. Good luck, and have fun.
Should mention too that I did mess up my radio when I flashed GB but it was quickly fixed by reflashing. So the only con has been my own fault. I also believe that you can restore the phone to a "fresh out of the box" state should you ever need to take it back.

Try the RC5 preview with the new MR2 OTA leaked radio. Smoothest combination I've used yet.
Yeah definitely would suggest flashing the official MR2 radio as well. It's been the most solid for me. Had issues with 2.5, and I had slow 3g speeds on the leaked MR2.

I'll try BAMF again when RC5 is officially released. My phone really likes Ziggy's kernels. Was flashing almost daily since I got my bolt trying to find decent battery life. Running Synergy now for a week with no issues. Liked the other roms, but Ziggy's kernel gives me the best life.

Should I root my brand new SGP 4.0?

Hi all,
I ordered a SGP 4.0 and will receive it today. Should I root it as soon as I receive it? Does 'rooting' make any changes to the stock firmware? Does it change anything else compare to a stock SGP beside that it will have 'root' permission?
I am new to the Android environment as I have never owned one before, but I am an embedded software guy by trade (on a totally different discipline and processor family) so I'm not a stranger in the firmware world and Linux environment.
Later, I like to learn programming/hacking the Android for fun and hope that I will be able to contribute something.
Thanks for any comment.

No, all it does is just give you root access.
Not really, unless you want to use Titanium Backup. Mine is rooted (I think, can't remember lol) and I really don't see any other advantages except for overclock apps or other root-only apps.
Overall, it's not necessary. Just flash a ROM (I prefer CM7 or Klin's Klassic ROM) and a kernel (NOTE: Steve's kernel for the US and INTL 4.0 may cause bootloops if you boot into ClockWorkMod Recovery).
Thanks! I appreciate the replies. So, if I want to root, I just grab the latest version of Superoneclick and have at it?
If I were you I would wait a little longer and get some more information about this, beofre rooting. I rooted my Player using Superuser, just the latest one I could find.

Hey, I'm a huge novice at all of this. I've had my player for a few months and I've heard of tons of people that have rooted their device.
What does it allow you to do? Is it how you get more themes?
I'm very unintelligent on this subject so any clarification would be great...

ROM Recommendations

Hi guys
I'm getting a Touchpad tomorrow and have been looking around the ROM forum but unable to tell which is the best to install.
I've been flashing rom's for sometime onto my HTC phone and pretty comfortable with Clockwork Recovery. Is there a "How To" guide or do I need to go down the CM route?
Looking forward to seeing Android on this tablet and any help/advice to a newcomer would be appreciated.
Cheers!

There are some simple and well put togher guides in the dev section.
You need to install moboot, cwm & rom via acmeinstaller the first time you install android on these devices. Once you have moboot and cwm, you can play with other roms as easy as your HTC phones.
A lot of the guys and gals here have put some real nice guides and tweaks to make these tabs fun to play with.
I personally use the CM9... I have not jumped into the nightlies though. Mostly happy with the performance with the CM9 V2. I do however regularly check the nightly threads to see if it's worth updating.
Most of the other roms (I really have not played with many) share similar issues with CM9 builds (sporadic wifi, camera, etc) so I just stayed with the CM9 and have been happy doing so.
Good luck and have fun.
Hey welcome to the touchpad comunity!
You can start by following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1452625
Once you're done sweting up CWM and Moboot
I suggest trying one of these three roms : (these are the best roms)

-Unofficial AOKP Nightlies http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1452625
-ClassicNerd ICS Butta HD http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472892
