ok, so a month or two ago I rooted my Motorola Atrix so I could install Gingerblur which went well at first. It was working great for me and then I noticed that once and a while i would look at my hone and see an exclamation point and an android icon..I would have to pop the batter out and put it back in to restart...what I think happened is that my phone tried installing an automatic update which failed maybe due to my hacked phone not being compatible...bc after awhile I would notice my phone installing an update and then automatically rebooting to the error screen.
I tried installing GreyBlur the other day..and it didn't work well..so I flashed back to 1.5.6..but now I don't know how to upgrade to 1.8.3..when I scan for a system update it says that my phone is up to date..how can I update to the latest firmware and how come my phone isn't automatically installing it? Have I lost my opportunity to do this since to all the hacking I've done to my phone? or am I missing something? please help =(
Have you tried downloading it from the Motorola website? You should be able to just follow the directions on there to update it.

I used the "second method" and just let the Moto installer do it's thing. It will take some time and look like it may be freezing occasionally, but just let it go. It should work.
Hope this helps.

I'm updating right now through the second method. I'm surprised I didn't find that sooner..I should of just went to the website to begin with..but I searched google and couldn't find any information on how to download it without going through an automated update.
I was also wondering if I should do a factory reset after updating

I have a 80 G9 (16GB) . It came with 3.2.79, I updated to 3.2.80 when it came out.
I successfully rooted 3.2.80 using information from this site.
This weekend I tried to update to the new 4.0.4. The update seemed to "hang", and I ended up forcing a power-off.
I subsequently used the recovery menu to do a full system format, and then tried to reinstall the 4.0.4 firmware - I've tried this a few times and each time it *seems* to be successful. After copying the AOS file to the device over USB, and selecting "ok", it says to leave the USB connected, a progress bar winds its way across the bottom of the screen, and then it reboots.
However, each time when it tries to boot, it just sits at the animated boot logo and never proceeds further. I've even tried letting it sit overnight - when I checked it in the morning after allowing it 6+ hours, it was STILL just sitting there rolling that bright bar across the "ARCHOS" logo..
I've tried to go back to 3.2.80, it gives an "update failed" on that every time I try.
I did the "remove developer edition" in the recovery menu, thinking perhaps the official firmware was balking on a 'rooted' device. Reformat, recopy AOS file, reboot, still no cigar..
I tried downloading the AOS file again, no luck..
Am I now the not-so-proud owner of a flat shiny brick? Is there some other procedure I can try? Has anyone else experienced this?
ANY advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
If anyone needs more details or other info just let me know.
1. Download update .aos again (just to be sure)
2. Boot to recovery
3. Select Reset Android option
4. Install update
I hope this helps

I've already done 2,3,4 several times. I managed to get a hold of someone at Archos that said that the file gets validated when it goes to update, and I'd get an error if it was corrupt. It doesnt give me an error there, it accepts the file.
As I'm currently on a slow hotel Internet connection, does anyone have an md5sum or sha1sum of their ICS .aos file I can use to validate mine against? (Annoying that Archos doesnt include a hash on their site)
Update .aos file is digitally signed (this also includes checksums of contents). If signature check fails recovery will not flash it.
My guess is that you'll have to give tablet to service unfortunately

In case anyone cares, I did in fact end up sending it back, and they sent me a replacement.
The replacement had ICS on it, and has in fact since OTA's another update without any problem.

I cant believe you got through to support. I have been trying for the best part of 3 months and got no reply. I am new to XDA since I recently got a HTC Sensation. Saw that we have this section here for Archos G9s. Got my ''broken'' one out of storage and rooted and flashed it with a custom ROM. And it works again. Surprised since I had the exact same issue you got but I was not rooted when updating.
Some of you might have seen my earlier thread, my ReZound is rooted. HTC sent out the ICS update my phone attempted to install it and afterwards it would not advance past the white HTC screen. After many hours of playing around with it (being semi-noobish to all things rooting, but decently knowledable with technology) I realized that on the H-boot screen it was telling me that the Image was missing. I assumed that the HTC update deleted it? After thinking about it, I thought that maybe installing a custom ROM would fix this, so I grabbed Scotts Clean ROM. Sure enough I did and I was finally able to advance past the white HTC screen. It looks as if everything is working fine with the phone now EXCEPT I have no data and no calling connection. Im assuming that my phone is just that messed up from the attempted upgrade this morning that im missing files needed for the connection.
My next thought was to just say heck with it and do a factory reset hoping to get back to a bone stock phone that at least functioned, but when I try the factory reset it doesnt work....
Any ideas of what I should do next? Ive spent 5-6 hrs trying to fix this phone today, I really hope to get something figured out. Thank you everyone for your help!
EDIT: I feel like an idiot... Because of putting the battery in and out for resets I left the back off the phone. I now have service. Main issue now is that when I try to call out, as soon as I type a number on the dialer it freezes up and restarts itself....
The phone still tries to look for the old image on the restart and gives me issues every time on startup still also. Id like to be able to get this back to not needing a ROM....
If it were me, I would download the official RUU for ICS found here: http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...cream-sandwich-ruu-for-final-ota-3-14-605-12/ IIRC, mirror #3 was the fastest. Then follow the directions from that site:
After downloading the file, rename it to "PH98IMG.zip" (no quotes)
Place the renamed file onto the root of the SD Card
Power down your device
Reboot into the bootloader by holding VOL DOWN + Power
The flashing process should begin automatically
Let the device reboot, and you should be done.
That will get you up and running. Then you can go about rooting it again if you like.
Stuck in "loop" after OTA 2.3.5 update on rooted Photon. Any way to get out of this?
Just curious if anyone knows any trick to get out of this loop.
I've got a rooted photon with 2.3.4, and I've been getting the notification to update to 2.3.5 from Sprint.
The message states that "a new update is available for your phone", and I've just been clicking the "install later" option because I know it doesn't work if my phone is rooted and I have a custom boot loader.
So I think this morning when my alarm was buzzing to wake me up the software update screen popped up and I accidentally clicked "Install now" when I was trying to snooze the alarm.
It rebooted into my bootloader, says it's trying to apply the update, and then says that it failed.
When I reboot the phone, it boots up like everything is normal, I get to my regular homescreen and then it realizes that the update didn't apply so it restarts immediately into bootloader, and the update fails all over again.
Does anyone know of any way to get out of this loop? Like, there has to be some flag flipped in the main system that's telling it that it needs to reboot to apply the OTA update. Is there a way to turn this flag off so I can keep using my phone like it was?
In the mean time I did a nandroid backup of the current state, and then restored an old nandroid backup from several months ago so I could use the phone for now (which sucks cuz I've made alot of little changes since then).
I haven't been on the site for a while, and I'm really busy throughout the day so I don't really have that much time to search through dozens of old threads, even through I tried looking for similar issues (considering if a fix for this problem exists it was probably discussed when this OTA update first popped up several months ago).
I'm sure this question has been asked a bunch so flame away if you must, but I'm just hoping someone can point me in the right direction if a fix or trick exists to get out of this situation without having to completely wipe my whole phone and start over.
Thank you,

Hi all,
Im new to the forum and did some searching but cant find the info i need. I tried rooting my verizon note 2 to casuals one click and didnt realize i had updated to android 4.3 prior. So it tried to root 4.1.2. Now my phone has the yellow triangle and says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." I tried kies and kies 3 and neither one recognizes my phone. The only way to shut the phone off is to pull the battery. When i reinstall the battery i have a brief window to volume down+home+power and it takes me to odin. I saw this problem in the forums for roms but couldnt find anything on rooting. Please tell me i can fix this and go back to stock, and i didnt lock my phone up for good.I know im an idiot and i didnt back up anything. Ive learned my lesson and will do more research before attempting this again.I also realized there is no root for 4.3 yet. My phone was stock before i tried all this. Its the verizon sch-1605.Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

Couple of things:
- if you've received the 4.3 update, your bootloader is locked and (currently) un-touchable. Don't try to flash, well, anything.
- if you've received the 4.3 update, you've also received Samsung's odius KNOX technology. If you do try to flash anything most things (especially recoveries), you'll trip the KNOX counter and invalidate your warranty (I believe it also means you can't use your phone in enterprise setups that use KNOX)
The good news is that you can restore your phone to working order! You'll need to install the Verizon Software Upgrade Assistant. XDA member scoobysnack posted a link to download the software, though you can also get it from any functioning Verizon Samsung smartphone that's plugged into a computer.
After you've installed the software, turn your phone on and plug it into the computer. Run the software and select the tab on the left column titled 'Repair'. Click on the repair button near the right side and sit back & wait. The software will download the 4.3 OTA and install it. Like ODIN, it is imperative that you not unplug your phone during this process.
If you have trouble getting the software to recognize your phone, it may help to put it into download mode. I had to go through this myself (I foolishly forgot about the bootloader issue and tried to flash a recovery. Sigh).
You can achieve root for 4.3, but there are some serious concerns about Kingo, the software the provides root. XDA doesn't allow links to them due to unanswered questions about privacy concerns due to unusual traffic capture going between the software and (apparently) servers in China
thanks so much. ill try it in the morning when i get off work.
Also when i was in odin and plugged my phone in, the software on the pc didnt recognize my phone either. Is that something i should worry about. I guess the box was supposed to turn green but never did. Many thanks
ok so i got home today and tried downloading verizon software update from the link you gave and it wont open the program. Ive tried on 2 different computers. so i called verizon tech to see if they have it cause i can only find it on the website described eariler, and they said they dont have it. Its only in your phone. Well i cant access my phone to get it and im stumped. They said to go into a verizon store and they should be able to fix it. What are my options? I dont have any data on the phone i need to save so can i just go back to a previous version or wipe it out? Or do i have to do a custom rom? Thanks in advance.

When you go into ODIN mode (turn off your phone, power on using POWER+HOME+VOL-DOWN), do you a line that reads 'KNOX WARRANTY VOID'? It would be in the upper left corner under 'SYSTEM STATUS'.
I ask because if you don't have that line, you didn't upgrade to 4.3 and your bootloader is NOT locked. You should be able to flash to 4.1.2 from ODIN and go from there (CASUAL to unlock & root, et cetera).
If you do have that line, then your only option is the VZW Software assistant. I'm uploading it now and I'll send you a link via PM. Please keep in mind that if you use the VZW Software assistant, whether your bootloader is currently locked or not, it most definitely will be locked after using it. If you're already locked, no harm done, but I'd make sure first.
Hello everyone,
I have a weird problem I'm trying to solve for my cousin, he clicked on his "Updates available for…" notification and he said one of them was Kies Air, he let it update and then his phone said it was going to restart, once it restarted he got a Security Error screen with red text at the top "SECURE FAIL: Modem". Now his phone won't boot up at all. He took it to his local T-Mobile store and they didn't know what to do, they also treated him like he was some noob who failed to root his phone (my cousin doesn't even know what rooting is). So they told him this is a time to learn and to check out "android forums".
Now he's brought it to me and I've only found one thread with anything pertaining to this error:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2791494
I'm going to try some of the tips in there but I'm just wondering if any of you have encountered this same problem with your T-Mobile S5's?
Tiny update as I'm writing this: he said his phone didn't come with Kies Air, but somehow he installed it when he got dropbox.
Got it working now.
Since the error was mentioning the modem I figured I'd try and flash a stock modem through Odin, and that worked. Pretty basic fix.
I wasn't sure what firmware he was running so I installed the NCH modem from here:

Hope this is helpful for anyone in the future.
