Teardown and extra space? - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering about the viewing angle on my gtablet and did a quick search on gtablet and teardown. I noticed some people playing with it last november for other reasons.
A bit ago, when I was building a multi touch laser table a bit ago, I started playing with the different layers of a standard LCD monitor. I ended up killing on monitor so I have some extra parts... One of the layers I found out really helped the viewing angles (diffused layer between the light source and the lcd).
Has anyone looked to see if you can seperate the lcd layers and if there was room for a thin sheet of plastic?
Has anyone taken their gtablet apart and been able to put it back together without major problems?
I'm not sure if I have the to take mine apart and do this yet... but I'm getting close. But if others have taken theirs apart and reassembled it... I would at least take it to that level and see how my confindence is.
(also would be nice if I could add a led behind the buttons... wonder how doable that would be..

I have taking my a part a few times but never getting into take out the LCD ... it was pretty easy to take out and put it back ... i have changed the LCD of various laptop and recently one on the Archos 70IT and yes, the LCD can be separated with a fews tapes and metal clips to remove ... next time if i have to take out my Gtab, i will take note of the LCD to see if can de separated with Clips or tape or both

There is a post with pictures of a guy who backlit his buttons. Seemed pretty simple for someone of his ability, but far beyond mine. Ghetto button (drops of reflective paint on the side) for me. Search for LED buttons or something similar. Never mind, found it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=899132&highlight=LEDs

Screen showing what seems like negative colours (problem repaired)

i thought i would post an interesting probelem i have just fixed,
seemingly between text messaging, my screen started displaying what looked like all the colours in negative, after having many years of use out of my device, i though it had finally packed up for good,
everything worked as normal aside from the display of colours, and there was a strange lack of pixels displaying vertically which made certain screens impossible to read,
having pulled the hermes apart on past occasions, i decided that before writing it off i would pull it apart one last time for a squiz
i found some interesting things, i have photographed these things so that if someone else is having a similar problem, it may help them out and save them the cost of a new phone/screen
what i found was a carbon deposit running across some of the connectors which run from the screen to the circuit board, after carefully running a fine grade of emery paper (800grit) over this to clean it up, this had to be done carefully, as the gold layer is microns thin, and the copper layer is revealed within seconds, much more rubbing would probably strip away the copper as well, so it might even be a good idea to try 1200grit
(making sure the carbon bridged circuit was gone) i put it back together and everything works fine)
not sure what cased it, the only thing i can think of might be moisture (it was raining the night before, and a drop might have worked its way just under the screen)

If it happens again, instead of an emery cloth, try a cottonbud soaked in isopropyl alcohol. DON'T use metho as this will cause corrosion...
Cheers...

[Q] camera now taking blurred pics

Hi
Im running Artemis 65.0 WWE, and for the last few months the camera seems to only take blurred pics. Like soft focus all the time, regardless of light settings / conditions etc.
It was working fine months back. Is it likely a hardware prob, or something maybe could be fixed with a hard restore? Have to own up to probably dropping the device countless times over the years.
Havent seen any similar thread for HD2.
SOLUTION
I was almost about to upgrade my camera, due to the rubbish photos, then i thought it was perhaps due to the glass cover over the lens being scratched. looking closely, it had a lot of very fine scratches and these must have been interfering in focusing the image.
quickly googled how to clean and remove glass scratches and someone had mentioned they use toothpaste as a cleaning and buffing compound.
so i got a cotton earbud, snapped it in half. dipped it into a bit of toothpaste, and then fixed it to my cordless drill. about 5 minutes of polishing and i could see many of the scratches had been completley removed.
placed everything back together and voila! my camera is utterly fixed! perfect images once again!

if Samsung cant find a solution you must (lightbleed)

i just wonder why the **** some N10s has no lightbleed and others has it all over the screen.
WHY?
thats the big question.
has anyone opend their devices and found something that differ from others or found some loose/to tightend screws?
also i wonder why it is on some devices that the top half is brighter than the bottom screen?.
also i wonder why some people at samsung quality check havnt got fired yet?
its about time they do something.
I suggest we create a thread "Post photos of your Nexus 10 showing a black screen at XX% brightness". That would be a "wall of shame" to send to Google/Samsung. Not sure what the XX would be. 75%? 100%?
Doesn't really matter if its 75 or 100. The camera will auto expose and the images and exposure for every different picture will be different.
I dont care about light bleed, its minimal and I dont see on normal conditions.

The only time I notice light bleed is when I boot up, and and I'm like wtf? I have then I quickly forget about it until I see a post on the forums about it.
Yeah you only notice it on screens with black background
Over the last few years I have haunted the Asus Transformer (through several versions) and now the Nexus tablet forums and ALL tablet products have various levels of light bleed which vary even between devices made on the same assembly line. It is like an echo that never dies.
If your device cannot be used due to excessive light bleed then RMA or sell it. If you are expecting no light bleed then, at this time, with this screen technology, tablets are not for you. From what I have read it does not matter which manufacturer, tablets have lightbleed.
This may sound harsh but see for yourself by reading other Tablet forums. You will read similar to identical complaints. Some perceived and some real (ASUS Transformer TF201 WiFi strength):
> Lightbleed
> WiFi poor signal strength to repeated dropped connections
> Poor build quality
> OTA releases that break something
> Poor video playback
> Interface stutter
> Reboots, poor battery life ... etc
I am not saying that you should put up with a poor product more that you should vote with your wallet and your consumer rights like RMAing a defective device.
The thing is about the N10, people might be able to deal with it if it was just some bright spots, but the thing that kills me is that they're bright yellow spots which can easily be seen in the bottom right menu bar thing at all times. This is by far the worst tablet I've ever seen in terms of lightbleed.
I never use my tablet completely in the dark at 100% brightness. I saw the light bleed when I tested it after reading these posts but then when i turn the brightness back down to 50% its gone. I don't even notice it in the dark parts of movies. I understand that there are probably some worse cases than mine, but sometimes I think people are too picky.

I am not sure if it's a matter of being too picky. I think what kills is that the lightbleed on this table is yellow. If it was white I would tolerate it better.
Start two more threads just to be sure...

My minor light bleed is pure white.
I don't have any issues with lightbleed on my N10. Is it there an I don't notice it? That may be the case, I guess I don't stare at a black screen and have unrealistic expectations... Great tablet and would recommend it to anyone!

You must not understand manufacturing at all
I opened my N10, the screen is sealed with the front glass inside a plastic frame. The only screws inside are on a metal frame that holds th battery in place, which have no effect on the extent of lightbleed.
With tablets nowadays even with the Asus (which I've tried myself), the screen is attached to the touch panel (digitizer) via strong double sided tape. The screen is really thin so any flex during installation will cause it to be uneven causing some of the light bleed. You can probably remedy it by using a blow dryer or heat gun in low setting to be able to lift up the screen from the touch panel where you have light bleed and even it back down. You have to be careful not to bend the screen too much or it will crack. Again this will probably be a very thin screen (about 2-3mm) and fragile screen. IMO dont even try it and just get it exchanged and hope you get a better one.

The screen is fused to the digitiser, ie no double sided tape, and it is impossible to separate screen and digigiser

Not sure youre right. I work for an ATM company and we have touchscreen machines and the touchpanel is sandwiched in between the LCD and front glass. But on tablets the screen is not fused but they use a double sided tape. Whats probably fused is the gorilla glass and the digitizer. Post edited
Also I know this because I've completely removed a dead screen from an asus prime before. Once you have both separated the glass has a thin film (digitizer) on it and on the bottom of the film is a ribbon cable. The screen itself has nothing on the front but a thin 1/4 foam tape around it.

I might have misread your post, but I was talking about the nexus 10, Sorry for the confusion
It used to be that there was a piece of double sided sticky tape (like I have on my old tab) between digitiser/ protective glass and LCD screen. For the nexus 10 howver, this website says its all fused together
"Everything else seems to come out just as easily, according to the write-up. But the Nexus 10 display and digitizer are fused together, so there's no chance of separating the two. " http://crave.cnet.co.uk/laptops/google-nexus-10-rated-extremely-repairable-after-teardown-50009785/

This is a ridiculous statement ..there are plenty of tablets without light bleed and everyone should expect to not have light bleed. Now the bleed I'm talking about are the blotchy spot types where there is glow coming from one area that extends out from one/multiple areas. Which the N10 has very bad blotches. Totally unacceptable. Slight even "leak" around the edges is one thing but a yellow blob coming out of a corner when you watch videos is ridiculous.
My HP Touchpad made my 2 N10s look like crap in regards to light bleed. Yeah, a touchpad.
I hope they get it right soon... prob will give it another go in a month at a physical store if I hear good things

[Q] Issues after changing the digitizer

I have just changed it, but after assembling it, I noticed that even when the screen is off there is a zone that looks like when a car left an oil spill on the road and with certain angles of light you can see green~blue~purple colors. Pic of what I'm talking about: http://i.imgur.com/n5CXv.jpg
I would like to take one of the screen, but for now I'm unable. I'll try later asking for someone's mobile to take a pic.
After taking off the digitizer again, I noticed that it didn't had that colors. But after putting it back on the phone, it had. Seems that it only has it when it's properly placed.
Does anyone know how to stop this happening? It's annoying.
EDIT. When I touch near that zone, it looks like if when you touch a flat screen.
digitizer is making pressure on lcd.

That was the problem. I compared the new digitizer with the old one, and seems that the old had a felt pad along the borders of the screen. I took it off and after putting it in the new one, the stain went away.
Thanks a lot.

[Q] DIncLTE got washed, need some advice (pics!)

Hey all -
My wife, deep in the midst of pregnancy-brain, washed her beloved Fireball a couple weeks ago. Long story short, she tried to power it up too soon, and now the LCD backlight is dead.
Everything else seems to function fine, so I decided to see if there was something obvious that could be fixed. Sure enough, at one of the connections between screen and mainboard, there looked to be some small electrical POOF type scarring. One of the traces on the ribbon cable is missing a chunk of conductive material right next to the connection, so it would seem replacing the whole assembly (digitizer/LCD) should restore function. Except - right next to that spot on the mainboard is what looks like it might be a diode that might have seen better days. I'm not sure, and I haven't been able to find any closeups of the inside of the phone to verify what it's supposed to look like.
So what I'm wondering is if anyone here can take a peek at these pics, note the potential damaged area, and tell me if that little bit of badness means I have to toss the phone.
Thanks!
