[Q] Screen under sunlight - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I've been reading all these wonderful things about this perfect phone. Battery, power, speed and screen. It's awesome. However, I haven't found anything about legibility under the sun. Could anyone post some pics of it under bright sunlight or at least let me know how it compares with SGS1? Has it improved a lot?
Thank you.

you are talking abour proximity sensor.
this sensor in hero dims screen in bright room and increases brightness in dark room for good visibility.

For me, it is exactly vice versa.
It increases brightness in bright rooms and dims in dark rooms for good visibility
you can test this if you (accidently) put your fingers on the sensor or come near the hero (reading mails and stuff), it is always dimming itself^^

screen on direct sunlight

Hi Guys,
there is visibility? it is the screen amolded or a kind of similar technology, I cannot find so far in internet?
I think I read somewhere it is SLCD? However, it is better than the one from iPad 1 if you ask me... quite more detail visible. Only thing that drew me out of sunlight yesterday was the danger of a sunburn.

Yea this tablet is insanely bright! I leave it on min brightness and have been able to use it outdoors without a problem.
Agreed, the screen is sunlight readable, especially when brightness on high. Granted it's not a E Ink screen but def. doable outdoors for reading, surfing etc. not quite good enough for fast action & high detail games though.

Almost too Bright for Night Reading

I spend most late nights reading in bed with the lights off. With my Galaxy Nexus, and Galaxy Tab 10.1 it was never an issue.
Somehow though, the Nexus 10 is almost too bright at its lowest setting. I find it much harder to read at night than with any other device.
I use kindle's white lettering with a black background.
It certainly is not a deal breaker, but it does begin to give me a headache after prolonged use. A simple fix would be to lower the brightness on the screen even more.
What do you guys think?

Now that I think about it, there probably is some form of app that will do that for me..
I''ll give it a whirl tonight.

I always set my Kindle/Google Books app to have the sepia background at night. I find it makes it perfect for night reading.
Solution is turn on your bed lamp.
Screen Filter from the Play Store. Click thanks if helped.

I wish, but with a girlfriend soundly asleep beside me the extra light is not an option.

Just about to recommend this as well. Worked perfectly on my HTC hero, and works perfectly on my one s
Even better, root it and install RootDim instead. That actually dims the LCD backlight and has the side effect of saving battery. Screen Filter just covers the screen with a transparent black image that ruins color accuracy and contrast.
EDIT: looks like Screen Filter is broken on 4.2 anyway, so... there you go.

I think this will help but how do you do that? There are almost no settings in the Kindle app.

where can i found that one?
that mod must also reduce some lightbleeding as the lightbleed comes from the backlight.
Screen Filter has been broken for a while. Rubbish. I use ScreenDim. There's a free trial, but it's dirt cheap anyway. Best dimmer I have used. And I use my N10 largely for reading, and do a lot of it at night. Highly recommended.
Thanks everyone,
I tried screen filter, it worked well. I am already rooted and I must say Rootdim is pretty wicked.
Highly recommended.

Brightness

Ok, so I have my brightness all the way up, and I am still having trouble seeing my screen, and yes, it's bright out, but I don't have it in the direct sun light. I know that my iPhone had no problem with screen being brighter outside. I have the auto brightness disabled. Now, when I bought the phone they put a glass protector on it which is clear, and I also have it in the Otter Box case as well. Could this reduce the brightness? Lastly, if the phone is what it is, then is there an app that will make the display brighter? Thank you so much.

use brighter backgrounds, they will eat up battery a little bit quicker but the brighter colors will actually make the screen brighter. using a black background will cause the screen to produce less overall brightness.
Wow, never gave that a thought. Thank you so much, I appreciate the information. I am off to find a brighter background.

If I remember correctly, the screen can get brighter with the auto brightness turned on. Can't remember where I read that, but the thinking was that super bright mode may damage the screen if it's on that way all the time.
Don't forget, Iphone has LCD, we have Amoled, which one of the drawbacks is, it sucks in the sun.

I will give Lux a try thanks.
on top of the auto brigntenss through android, i believe that samsung has a lowe level brightness auto adjustment that changes depending on the image on the screen eg darker when the image is bright and vise versa

It is called CABC (Content Adaptive Backlight Control).

I am not sure how Lux behaves with this feature though.

Question Is the display really dim for everyone?

I have to keep mine at 90% or above to read the display. At 10% the screen is nearly pitch black. Is everyone else experiencing the same, or do I have a bad display?
I can use mine outside in the sun. I usually stop in shade if I can, but that's because of glare and it's hot down here.
I actually turn on "Extra Dim" at night.
Any chance Extra Dim is on?

It wasn't, but I actually like the color contrast better with it on. I'll leave this on and see if it helps with battery life.
