When I am not getting 3g coverage I am without data completely. No 1x, I just get a message saying "no data coverage available"
Any suggestions?

I would first suggest looking at the 'mobile network' setting. Go to 'settings' -> 'Wireless & networks' -> 'Mobile network' -> 'Network Mode'. Try different modes and see if this makes anything better. If it's the obvious, it could be that your settings may only be set to 3g. Also, check the radio basebands. Also, I'm not particularly familiar with the ROM you are using as I use the alpha of CM7. So the settings may not be the same. Hope this helps!

In Settings->Wireless Networks->Mobile Networks,
I have "Data Roaming" unchecked.
I'm in an area when my weak-signal 2G connection on T-mobile frequently drops out and restores. Every time it restores, a popup graciously informs me: "Attention! Data Roaming will incur extra charges. Disable Data Roaming?" I must click yes to dismiss the window.
I don't get what part of the setting (Data Roaming: UNCHECKED) the OS doesn't understand!
Am I missing something or is there a special way to really disable data roaming or get rid of the popups?
thanks!
phone: vibrant JI6
Does it still show that it is connected to data when it is roaming?

I sometimes see the Edge symbol in the top row. I just figured out that a couple of other carriers are sometimes weakly picked up at my location. I have a pay-as-you-go tmo sim in the phone (unlocked). I thought data roaming was not a possibility anyhow (I'm a noob at this). I only want to use 2G for phone, and wireless for data.
What I'm really hoping for is to NOT be asked to disable data roaming, since I made that setting.

Well here is a better option. Go into Settings>> Wireless and Network >> Mobile Networks >> Access Point Names >> Click on Menu & select New APN and create Dummy one. Then before selecting the back button make sure there the radio button for the dummy APN is selected. This should prevent you from connecting to Tmobile Data Services.

Thanks. That seemed to have worked, in that I don't get the roaming popups anymore. It seems that it may prevent me from roaming on 2G as well, but I'm not sure - I'm trying to figure this out whilst in cellphone hinterlands (in the San Juan Islands where the locals hate cell towers). Now I'm getting a string of popups requesting that I automatically search for providers, even though I've set it to manually select tmo. What I'm hoping for is just tmo 2G for phonecalls and SMS, with no guff from the phone about it. My Razr does that just fine.
Tomorrow, I'll drive off to a more cell-friendly area and make a better determination.
Appreciate the help!

I am glad it worked. Just set your phone to select automatically and you should be ok. Since you changed your APN, it will not connect to internet anymore using 3G. I know this coz, I used this while in Toronto last month.
I have T-Mobile version of this phone but I use it with Mobilicity.
Any time I go into a place that has no reception I obviously lose signal and both the bars and the 3G icon disappear.
However, when I leave that area and come back to the area where I had reception, the 3G icon never comes back. When I attempt to make a call I a get a message saying "not registered on network". If i go to wireless settings and try to manually search for a provider, the phone will only find Roaming.
The only thing that solves the problem is rebooting the phone.
I have Bionix 1.9 rom but this issue happened on stock as well. It also happens to another guy that has Vibrant9 rom.
On the other hand, other phones like the old samsung galaxy doesn't have that issue.
Any ideas. Am I missing some settings option?
Thanks...
I can only tell you I have exactly the same problem. Using it with Mobilicity.
Let's hope someone will come up with a fix.
A guess is that it has to do with the order in which it is searching to network operators after it loses signal. I am not sure how the phone is hard coded, but it is possible that upon reboot, it checks the SIM for which network to lock on to, but without a reboot it is looking for T-Mobile, because that is hard coded into the phone.
This is all a guess, but perhaps setting it to Manual network selection instead of automatic would help lock it on your network.
^yes, I think if you take it off the auto setting in your mobile network, that may solve the problem. Even though I'm with TMO we had a 3g outage and while it was on auto the same message came up for me, even after the outage was over. Set it to wcdma only, and I was able to make calls and get back on the network.
Setting it to Manual will just force us to do it manually every time it gets disconnected.
Not a solution, unfortunately.
Thanks guys,
Is there an application perhaps that will search for available networks and register on the network of your choosing once found?

Where you able to find a solution to this problem? I'm having the same problem. Let me know. Thanks.
+1111111.... i meant plus 1... but yeah ...i'm having the same problem... Vibrant on Mobilicity w/ Froyo Rom from Axurus <-- i think thats how u spell it
Anyways, this happends while im at home, sitting on the same chair as i was when i had the 3G...and then boom..............3g just disappears and doesn't come back til' i restart....
Have you tried setting the mobile network to "WCDMA Only" ?
Mobilicity doesnt have a GSM network.
I've searched all over for an answer but I can't really find any post with my issue. But before I jump in to it I thought I would provide background first to show where I'm at.
Htc thunderbolt -> One click rooted -> NAND made -> Wipe data -> flashed CM7 alpha -> Everything running smoothly (3g working before flash(3 weeks) and after flash(1 day) perfect).
Now, out of the blue, the 3g started to fail (day after flashing the rom). I get stuck on 1x (Note. I'm in 0 coverage for 4G). The mobile network type says unknown or CDMA-1xRTT (it changes back and forth a lot).
I restore the the phone from the backup (3g working one) and its in the same condition as it was in CM7, 1x or unknown or even no service.
Back in stock rom I dial the ##778# and the the enabling Rev .A. I commit, reboot, 3g!.... 1x... and it changes back and forth from there. So I also dialed the *#*#4636#*#* and change the unknown (or a 4g setting) to CDMA Auto prl. I get nothing, reboot, still goes between 3g 1x and nothing. It also force closes me often, is that normal?
Reflashed the CM7 and thats where it is.
I'm also in a strong 3g area, never get 1x. Another note is that it kicks off the "3g" i have when on the market or browser and says a Network error has occurred.
The majority of the time right now I have 1x or nothing (just 3-4 bars) with all these settings.
Any help or insight would be wonderful and greatly appreciated!. I've run out of ideas.... If any more data is needed just ask me.
[Edit]
So when changing the settings in the 4636 code I found it on CDMA only? I assume that favors 1x. So I change it to the Auto prl, then it force closes. I go back in to see its now on unknown, so I change it again. This time it sticks and 3g comes on. I'm not sure if I can trust this 3g or not. Any ideas?
Is it normal behavior for the Amaze to take a two and a half minutes or so to find a signal for the mobile network? Also the "network mode" always defaults to "gsm/wcdma auto" even if I select GSM only.
In this time if I pull down the notification bar and go to quick settings, I am unable to check the "mobile network" the checkbox is kinda dimmed out/greyed out.
If I manually go in and search for network, it will generally connect faster.
Just wondering if this is normal or not... so I know if its a hardware issue and I should return the phone for another.
appreciate any comments.
The GSM/WCDMA selection is "normal" behavior for the amaze. (and it's extremely annoying). It seems to be a setting with the ROM and since I rooted and went with Beast, I no longer have the problem.
As for the searching for mobile network, that's sometimes normal. It generally happens when your in an area where T-Mobile is not the dominant signal and prevents you from latching on to a roaming tower rather than T-Mobile.
I recently rooted my EVO LTE using Regaw's "one-click-root" and S-OFF with Lazy Panda. I applied the De-odexed STOCK 1.22.651.3 ROM and 1.05.11.0606 radio and PRI 2.45_003.
Everything seems to have been running fine so far. But today, when I change the network mode to "CDMA only"..from "LTE/CDMA"..my 3G data is disabled. When I change back to LTE/CDMA and reboot my phone, my data works fine. Needless to say, when I'm home my WiFi serves my data needs, but I'm concerned I'll end up without data when I'm on the road.
After doing some research, I decided to download the Android app "Network Signal Info" With "LTE/CDMA" selected, "Network Signal Info" reports network type as eHRPD with a data state of "connected". And with "CDMA only" selected, network type is listed as EVDO Rev A, with a data state of "disconnected".
At one point I was able to "update profile" while LTE/CDMA was selected, and my phone prompted me to reboot. But much to my chagrin my issues persist. Can anyone offer me some insight here?

Honestly, I can't pinpoint your problem. There are a couple of things I'd recommend you try, though. First, try toggling airplane mode on and then off while in "CDMA only" mode. Then try the same with mobile network if airplane doesn't fix it.
After toggling those settings (remember to turn airplane mode back off/mobile network back on and check if your data connection is fixed), if you're still having problems, I'd try re-flashing your ROM (wiping recommended ). If that doesn't work, my last resort solution would be running the RUU, found here.
Try updating prl & profile, then reboot

After you change it to cdma only make sure you select "sprint only" in roam settings.
