So I've been thinking - the TF has a power requirement of 5V/15v at 2/1.2A, which is the same requirement as the ipad. Really wouldn't see any reason why this wouldn't work so long as the charger has a usb port and you use your OEM cable.
Much easier finding chargers for ipads than the TF, for now. Have some home and car chargers on order and will post results later.
TF's charger requirement is 15V.

best buy has a usb charger that you can get, its called a dynex ultimate charger for cameras and camcorders. its like 30 bucks and charges at 11 volts / 1.5 amps. it works great. I had to get one when my usb charger melted. Its the only one that I have found to work. I tried around 30 of them lol

That was the first time I plugged the Transformer in. I didn't even get a full charge out of the thing.
The transformer charger can shift between [email protected] or [email protected]
I have confirmed with my multimeter that the voltage is 5V when charging the transformer
The [email protected] is to charge the keyboard dock, but do not own one to confirm
You can use other chargers, its just Asus's stupid smart charger makes the charging indicator comeup when using the official charger, it also chargers faster, need someone with an electrical background and an oscilloscope to probe it out
I have been meaning to do a test on charging times with different chargers
Overall, as long as the charger is [email protected] under (ex. [email protected]) It will charger, the Transfromer will not show it, but if you check on it the percentages goes up
Ipad chargers are at [email protected] so give it a try

Cool, at first glance it looks like the cable is longer because of how many times its looped around. I just wrapped my cable around and looks close but not that exaggerated, you think Asus differed the photo? Lol

Wonder if it would be safe to charge iPhone and iPad through Asus "block".
I plugged my iphone 4 into the Asus block and it seems to charge fine. How safe it is, is another question entirely, but I can confirm it does charge the phone, and the thing didn't spontaneously explode or anything

I am always apprehensive when the item description is not consistent. The heading reads "5V 2A AC Adapter Charger for ipad 2 UK" whereas the output specs are 15V/5A as you stated...

I had reservations on getting the dynex charger but I hate only having charger for any unit I have. I bought it as a backup and cord lenght...lenght is very good. I received the transformer the next day from Amazon and saw the shortness of the stock cable. Brought out the dynex charger set it at. 11 volts and plugged it in and Viola...charges. 11 volts is lower then 15 but it still managed to charge from 29 percent to 100 in a acceptable and fairly good pace. I now use this charger over the stock because the stock charger gets really hot if used for a long time and I really don't feel comfortable. Using it.

I noticed that too but when I plug it in at night the next morning it's cool. I guess it heats up only when actively charging. Towards the end it should go down to trickle or no charge at all.

Has this been confirmed? I've tested voltage from a USB 3.0 cable from the Asus AC charger and saw 8V. I'll be testing while connected to the tablet once I get my extension cable in. Thread link in signature
I recently purchased the Scosche reVOLT c2 dual usb car charger. Being 2.1A, I was hoping it would work with my new Prime. Unfortunately that is not the case. It's a nice product and works we with all my other USB devices, but no luck with the TF. Unless anyone has any ideas to make it work, avoid this if you are looking to charge your Prime.

Even though most car chargers run off 12VDC input, they output only 5V for usb devices. The TF itself should trickle-charge with 5V, but in order to actually fast charge it (or charge while in-use), it requires [email protected] or more (give or take).
You need at least 12v output to charge the Prime at a normal rate. 15v is ideal. Standard USB is 5v.
+1 ^^ although I think I did read somewhere that the Prime will trickle charge on USB if it's off or "not in use"? Can't recall where I saw this...

Yes, the Prime will charge on a standard USB port, but it will do so very slowly. I have done so myself.

Just looking to confirm what I think I've deduced from the forum.
I can't charge my transformer when it's on or asleep with a standard USB charger, correct? I've invested in 2 different 2.0+ Amp 5V USB supplies and none seem to get the charge going on the Transformer. It sounds like I could turn OFF the unit and trickle charge it (by the way would the 2.0A charger be of any benefit in this circumstance?). It also sounds like the ASUS charger gives off 12V and that's what the Tranformer is expecting to get the charge going, right? If so, I'm definately dissappointed that ASUS went this approach- non-standard. I always like extra chargers for traveling and throughout the house and this has limited me. Anyway, if someone would be so kind as to reply to this and confirm I've read the threads correctly, I'd appreciate it.
The ASUS charger is 15V.
5V isnt nearly enough. If you got it powered OFF, you might be able to get it to full (from empty) in a few days (yes, days).
The TF can be charged normally with 10-15V.
I suggest you read this thread to get some other ideas.
Yea you need a 2 plus amp carger which also is 15 plus volts, and if you want to make your stock charge cable longer you have to use a male+female 3.0 usb cable... a 2.0 usb cant transfer enough power quick enouqh

First... The real wall charger is 15v 1.2A. So the 2 amp is just bs...
Second... A usb 2.0 cable transfer power just as "quick" (wut?) as a usb 3.0.
The reason you need a 3.0 cable is because the charger is looking for connection on a pin only present on a usb 3.0 cable. If you dont use a usb 3.0 cable the wall charger will only send 5V.
This is done this way so you can use the wall charger for other devices apart from the TF.
You can open the charger up and bridge 2 connections to make it send 15v all the time. Then you can use a usb 2.0 cable just fine.
Please, try not to spread false information.

Ahhh i see i read on the android forums that it was because the usb 2 didnt "move enough energy" i didnt realize it was because of a pin in the actual wall charger thanks for clearing that up

Before you correct people how about you do your research first.
Actually if you read the wall plug it is a 15v 2-1.2A. You can DIY a charger as long as it can produce 11v+ at 1.2A-2A and will trigger the charge functions within the tab. USB 3.0 is only required with the stock charger.
Dynex sold "The Ultimate Charger DX-UA" that had a MAX setting of 11v but when tested actually produced 11.7v at 1.7A. I was able to find one but they are rare now bc they haven't been making them for over a year now. It comes with aton of adapters one being a USB. I use it often without issue.
Also they sell on Ebay USB car charger adapters rated at 12v at 2.0A I own one of these also and it works great with the stock cable.

Actually I think youre the one who should read the text on the wall plug.
It clearly says "15v - 1.2A". the 2A is for 5v. Not 15. 5.

Has anyone else used the PowerGen car charger with the Note? I have a handful of other ones that all claim to fast-charge devices, but apparently it only works with iPhones and iPads. But since the PowerGen unit is on the list, can I assume people have used it and confirmed it will give me a 1A charge rate on the Note? I need a charger that can keep up with the Note occasionally drawing 1.4 A or more (display 100% brightness, GPS, LTE, Bluetooth all active, running Navigation).
A quick search for "powergen" in this forum only brings up the above thread.
Works like a champ. My battery was charging at 1600mAh while streaming soundcloud and using navigation. Definitely does the job.
I am using my car charger for galaxy tab 10.1 (2.0 amp) and it is working much better than any of the 1 amp chargers I have tried, OEM, boxwave, etc...
I also use the GT 101. 110V charging brick, so when I travel, only one brick and two cables. My experience is that the 2 amp charger works really well and will charge the phone while using GPS full time, where the OEM charger and other 1 amp chargers either maintain charge, or slightly discharge.
Thanks for the confirmation! Of course, now I discover Amazon won't ship that to Canada, and amazon.ca does not carry it. :crying: I'd go see what TELUS has to offer, but I'm sure it will be A) expensive and B) not have dual USB ports, or perhaps not even a detachable cord.
If you do find one, also buy a charge-only usb cord.

Is that still needed if the charger itself correctly supports fast charging? The cord I use now is the one from my Touchpad. I get 1 A to the Note from the AC plug, and the Touchpad gets around 1.8 A. I do also have a charge-only cable (much thinner cord, only two wires), but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

The cord from the touchpad is probably wired correctly internally for fast charge. I bought a similar dual car charger and did not see a difference with the micro usb sync cable. I only saw a difference with a charge-only micro usb cable. The phone sees what pins are connected and determines if it is going to charge in usb charge mode(<=500ma) or AC charge mode(>=500ma).

So you use the Touchpad USB micro cable to charge your Note in the car? I thought the cable is too short? I am looking for a LONG USB micro cable that is shorted so it will give >500mA.
I am planning to buy the PowerGen but I need recommendation on the CORRECT USB cable that is long enough.

The cable is about a meter in length. I only need about half that to reach from the plug to the phone mount on the dash.

So then how does it charge fast then? If the cable isn't shorted? Motorola does the same thing. IIRC its a shorted setup to allow for fast charging. All of my USB cables come from Samsung, HP, and Motorola and I use them as data cables as well

You short the pins inside the AC adapter or car charger, rather than the cable. If I understand correctly, the danger of using a charge-only cable is if you plug it into an actual USB port that isn't designed to supply more than 500 mA. Your device could then try to pull down, say, 2000 mA and potentially damage the power supply on your laptop or desktop.

I'm using the Rocketfish 3.1A Model# RF-M657D with my Note. While using Google Nav, lowest brightness, keys backlight off, Sync off, HSPA+, the phone still loses charge (albeit, slowly). I'm assuming this is because the charger is not internally shorted between pins two and three as it is marketed as a iPad/iPhone charger. I'm using a Belkin Data/Charge cable so I know that is not shorted.
I have been doing some reading and last night, I purchased the "Satechi Smart Adapter Compatible with Samsung Galaxy S (I can't post links yet, google it.) so I will report back when I receive and pair it with the Rocketfish.

Where/how do you get this info? Asking because I'm curious to see how my car charger does. It has usb ports rated at 2A, and I think it's 2A shared instead of per port, but want to see how it actually does when plugged in.

My rocket fish model must put out more than yours. My pic is above your post. With Google Nav, Google play music (streaming, not native music), full sync, brightness to at least 50% it only lost 4% over 30-40mins.

It's not like my phone dies or anything, but it'll lose like 5% an hour and I could be exaggerating. Are you using a charge-only cable or modded cable/charger at all? Like I said, I think this phone is only pulling down 460mA without said mod and I find 1600mA to be incorrect as I read the Note will only pull down 960mA max. We'll see what this adapter does for my charge times.

They only thing I'm using is that exact setup posted. RF adapter and a Motorola atrix desktop dock charge cable.. (basically just a longer version of the standard wall charger)

OK, I lied, I'm using the OEM cable that came with the Motorola Atrix 4G, not the longer cable from the desktop dock. I just checked my car and that's the cable that's in there.

i have this tablet for a couple days now, when i plug the power adapter to the mains the power adapter gets really hot.
does anyone have the same result or is just normal? i know that the adapter obviously will get hot, but it seems a bit to hot, just the adapter the usb cable is fine and so is the tablet
Its normal. If it gets to hot it shuts off. I hear you have to put it in the freezer to attempt to bring it back.

Noticed the same thing with mine. I'm actually on my second pad for other reasons, but I didn't notice the charger getting as hot with my first one. But it only seems to get hot when actively charging. I've checked it after letting it sit still plugged in, but after it finished charging and it was fine.
I just try not to leave it charging if I'm sleeping or going out. Although, I forgot to unplug it this time...

No. Other threads in this forum tell you why.
the reason the charger gets so hot is it's 15 volts
and it takes minimum 12 volts for the tablet to kick into charging mode
so to answer your question
a usb port does charge the tablet, but usb is only 5 volts
so it will not show charging
and it will probably take 24 hrs to fully charge
Mine gets hot while charging but once it hits 100% it cools back down. I don't charge it while sleeping for this reason. Also according to the manual the PC will charge it bult as previously mentioned it takes longer. The tablet must be powered off when charging this way or it won't charge.

Same as other itt, it will heat up when charging, but if it's left in the wall unplugged from the tab/dock it cools back down.
Perhaps it needs 12v for full charge speed, but the 300 also trickle charges when plugged into a computer USB port.
i have notice that, when it finishes charging, that just cools down, i was just wondering did i get a faulty one, but as ye say its normal

even there the charger gets very hot, so it is normal, also, we are going to have very hot temps these days, (40°C here)...
just be sure to not plug it near easy flammable things!

Yes we have noticed the charger gets very hot might have something to do with fast recharge time the device has

On my charger i notice it is wrting : "output 5v--2A or 15v --1.2A"
This mind that i can use the charger for any phone that charge usualy wiht 5V ?? Do the charger "swap" the voltage by him self if it's not connect to the tablet ???
I don't want to burn my HTC, but to have one charger for the tablet and the phone will be good when travelling

The charger that comes with the Transformer is dual-purpose. If you plug in a Transformer tablet, it'll output the 15V to rapid-charge your Transformer. If you plug in a USB device, it'll output 5V at 2A to rapid-charge your USB device.
If you're wondering how it can tell the difference, Pin #7 on the USB3 Transformer cable is grounded -- this is how the charger can tell the difference between a Transormer and an ordinary USB device.

In fact the charger of Asus is quite tricky. I haven't found any substitution, only stock charger can be used.

the connector look to be non standard as if you put an usb extension cable it wont charge.

It's not a non-standard connector -- it's a USB 3.0 connector.
If you use a USB 3.0 extension cable, it will work. If you use a non-USB 3.0 extension cable, the charger won't see that pin 7 is grounded, so you'll just get 5V instead of 15V. There's no bi-directional communication between the two.
The Transformer will charge when it sees 12V to 15V on what's typically the 5V pin.
The Asus charger will output 15V (earlier units were 12V) when it senses pin 7 is grounded.
Also, if you'd like to build your own power supply -- get any old female USB connector, and send 12V to 15V on pin 1 instead of 5V, and you've got yourself an Asus Transformer charger. Just don't plug anything else into it, since there's no safeguard to prevent 12-15V going into a 5V device. I've painted mine orange so I don't mistake it.
Hi, my Transformer pad won't charge normally when I connect it to the power adapter direclty - it doesn't show it's charging (though I can tell it is, because after some half an hour it had 2 % more of battery)... can it be that the charger doesn't recognize the tab and gives only 5V? Why? It works normally when I charge it on the docking station (through the power adapter), and the same cable works normally when I use it to transfer media to the pad from the PC...
P.S. When conneted to the power adapter directly, the orange light on the power button of the pad doesn't go on... it only goes on when the pad is on the dock and the power adapter is plugged into it.
Any ideas?
