[Q] New user with many questions... - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, so i just got an X10 yesterday. It's my first smartphone (had an HP Ipaq Winmobile 6.5 previously). Right now it's running CM 6.5 I believe, that's how I bought it. I have two simple questions, please.
1) What's a good screen cover? Should I just go to the nearest "we have everything" store and pick up a matte screen protector, or should I get a specific one? I leave it in my pocket and no screen protector is a big no-no!
2) What is the best ROM (and kernel??) for me to get, if I have the following needs:
i) Fast. Right now it feels pretty blazing to be honest!
ii) Multi-touch please!!! I really don't like how X10 has no MT!
iii) Need Wi-Fi and GPS (I don't have a data plan)
iv) Need camera support for apps. I use camera a lot, the current ROM doesn't allow apps to use camera really, and there's no support for the front-facing camera (is that even a camera?)
v) Ideally gingerbread, but I don't care as long as it meets other requirements.
vi) Flash, again, no biggy.
vii) Support for apps, including, if possible, 3D games. Video codecs are a must. I tried hero of sparta just for fun and it didn't work it said closed unexpectedly)
viii) If possible, as free of bugs as can be. Right now my touchscreen gives out sometime, nothing major but annoying.
Thank you SO MUCH!!! I know I'm basically asking you to do everything for me, but I have owned the phone for 12 hours and besides not knowing anything, am spending all my time trying to get my phone company not to charge me $25 to make put my data on a SIM.
I'll do my best to figure everything else out myself, I just need help figuring out which ROM (and if need be, kernel) I should use on the X10.
THANKS!!!

in your case the best option would be to just install the Sony ericsson software on your computer and do an update, it will install the latest most stable version of Android for your device (Froyo 2.1) then just use a flashtool to root it if you want. This will enable you to have full features with minimal bugs.

Froyo is 2.2.......
Anyhow op, wolfbreaks cm 6.1.3 i really good, as is cobratos miui. Neither have any bugs..
If you need any help let me know.
Also, that is not a front facing camera, it is a proximity sensor

Wow, FAIL, sorry!
I'm running 6.1.3 right now, v4.5 and kernel version 2.6.29 SEMCuser...
Is that fine? Should I just leave it? I'm fine with a few hiccups if this is the best possible for now...
Also, I have yet to unlock the phone. Can I do it while it's in a custom rom or do I need to reset to factory? From Rogers to Bell.
Thanks.

Yeah you can totally unlock on any rom, just put the other companies sim card into the phone!!
I would say maybe update to the latest version of wolfbreak's rom, but you could also try freex10 beta 4 or cobrato's miui, depending on what style you like.
They're all complete, and I have no issues with any of them.
The speed you will gain from a 2.2 rom vs. a 2.1 rom is insane, plus apps2sd and other benefits.
I don't think you could pay me to go back to 2.1...
Also, get vignette from the market for the cam. It's awesome

Cool. I'll give them all a shot at some point, right now I'm trying out CM so we'll see how it goes, might just try their respective versions of 2.3 if it comes out soon.
Thanks though! Any ideas about the 3D games? Can the X10 do them?
I got Retro Movie Player instead, will try vignette

Oh yeah it plays them well actually!!
Wolfbreaks played pretty well every thing I threw at it.
You can even get the HD version of games and it runs them perfectly.
Vignette is just for the camera, not for the camcorder. It takes amazing pics though (hardly compresses them) and has a TON of effects.

Yes, I agree with wolf's latest rom and cobrato's miui rom, both are fast, smooth and stable. I use both of them regularly. If you choose cobrato's rom and don't like the UI being like iPhonish, you can instal GO Launcher EX and it will even fly (that what I do with cobrato's rom). In fact with wolf's rom also I'm using GO Launcher EX as a replacement of Arc Launcher (really don't like that launcher).

Ok, wolf it is then seeing it's unanimous!
What about the screen protector...do either of you use it? I'm just careless with putting my phone next to my keys and stuff...

yes, I'm using Xtreme_guard, bought it from ebay for $3 includes shipping...

Wait...when you guys refer to wolfbreak...you mean CM 6.1.3?
Also, I guess I'll just get a random X10 screen protector if it's cheap and matte when I'm in Chinatown? Any downside to that?

HAHA my bad, had a long night last night. sorry for the confusion.

Wolfbreak is amazing ROM...i switched from freex10 beta 4 hotfix 1, and wolfbreak's ROM just totally amazes me. Partly because he's the only one that tweaks the build props. I got a whopping 1504 on my quadrant score!
Vignette is good camera replacement as the member above me said (personally, i never use the camera)
HD games...i can play almost any gameloft HD game on my x10, BIA2, Asphalt 5, Modern Combat 2, Real Football e.t.c... just not good cos the dual touch on the x10 is very dodgy. Oh yeah, download the game guerrilla bob...its my favourite game.
Keep in mind before flashing the wolfbreak rom, u need to flash the required baseband (for me, its baseband 58) via flashtool.

Instruction HERE:

Also in xrecovery wipe cache partition, dalvik cache and do a full factory reset, as well as a system backup, instructions in wolfbreak's ROM thread.
Oh btw: the x10 already has a screen protector; its factory and its put on perfectly incase you dint notice, otherwise you can buy those others on ebay, i bought ten for like 3 bucks (aussie)
Make sure you put it on properly to avoid bubbles, use credit card to squash bubbles. e.t.c

[Q] Best ROM for those who don't want to lose funcionality

I´m very confused with the number of options in ROMs for Xperia X10. With the amazing jog of so many developers, i just can't choose a ROM for me.
So i´m asking. Which is the best ROM (speed, stability and feature wise) for people who don't want to loose features of the phone (especially camcorder, camera and wifi)?
Thnks!
If you wan HD camcorder, you can only stay at stock rom.
I am using go3asy's 2.1 rom honeycomb look. It everything work n smoother than stock rom.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
Gotta agree with that . Here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=949457
I'm using the latest stock ROM with all good tweaks to make it very fast and responsive.
Things from my sig + max events per second=26 thing and heapsize=26m

I hd install Eminence's ROM once, and I satisfy with it. But after latest update from SEUS, my x10i is not able to use this ROM anymore. It just stuck on boot animation. Any idea how to fix this?
But I will try to install honeycom one. It seem better.Still downloading. Thanks for the information. Thanks...

It is the only reason why I'm still with stock rom.
stock rom maybe . eclair 2.1
Look like i´ll be on stock for a while.
Let's hope developers solve the problem with the camcorder on 2.2 and 2.3 soon. Maybe Arc shed a light on the cause of this.

Best ROM for those who don't want to lose functionality? Stick to the official SE firmware [including official updates].
Sony don't give a crap if we run 2.2, 2.3, or even 2.4/3.0 on it - and it's because of the simple fact that it's just a firmware. That's all what it really is. Only 'firmware' and *not* a ROM.
It's the consequence of SE's DRM stronghold on the encrypted bootloader, signed with a 1024 bit RSA key. We're looking at years of bruteforcing to be able to break in, which frankly neither is feasible nor worth the while.
And that is why nobody from SE cared enough to even bat an eyelid when one XDA user mailed their tech support representative complete with screenshots of his X10 running the 2.2.1 firmware, a link to a thread from XDA alongwith some XDA Dev namedropping. It's easy to realize that if this was a significant development, SE would've been all over our [XDA's] ass a long long time ago.
As much as I hate it, I think it's about time we came to terms with the reality. A fully functioning port is not going to happen. Atleast not until someone manages to dethrone the bootloader from it's current position
And no, it's not because the Dev's here don't have the technical know how required to do so, but rather it's because SE have ensured it wouldn't be worth anybody's while attempting a go at it.
Sad but true.

Stable rom

Just bought this phone (Sony Xperia x10) for my wife, after I smashed her Samsung galaxy S 4G during an argument last night. I ordered it overnight shipping so it should be here by Monday or Tuesday.
Now there were no custom roms out at the time she had her Galaxy 4G, so it was only rooted.
Yet after visiting the development section for this phone it looks like there are tons of roms being cooked up for this one, so I just wanted to get a few opinions on what roms are worth flashing? I'm looking for speed and stability above all. Its for my wife, so I want to be able to just flash something for her and never bother updating and flashing again for a month or two months at a time. Now if it were my phone I'd be flashing every other day! But that's only because I can handle bugs, beta testing, and known issues so on and so forth. Women though, they just want their phone to work, period. So what's the most stable rom to flash for the x10? Any insight, suggestions, heads up, and links would help, as I haven't got my hands on it yet, I want to go ahead and research as much as I can about it, so I can root, flash, and customize it for her right out of the box. Thanks.
cobratos miui is REALLY good...
Wolfbreaks cm 6.1.3 is also fantastic
I flashed cm 7 gb onto my gf's htc wildfire. Its completeley stable. She gets like 2 or 3 fc's every few days and guess what.......she still bloody moans lol.
Anyway back on topic....i vote for wolfs cm 6.1.3. Super stable, bug free and must be close to final release.
for stability i recommend z's freex10 roms
for eyecandy i recommend cobratos miui (my daily rom, fairly stable, has few bugs)
the stock 2.1 rom is not bad at all, just gotta optimize it a bit (remove bloatware, enable JIT, Sysctl, compucache, build.prop mods)....i think there are a few 2.1 roms with these mods already in place, however i havent used a 2.1 rom for a long time
if she wants take advantage of the nice camera on the x10, i recommend going the 2.1 route as the camera interface and quality is the best with stock 2.1 (IMO)

Since it is for your wife I recommend android 2.1. There are some nice girly themes out here for it, and she won't freak out of bugs.
Hi,
I've tested 5 roms :
-> original SE last update 2.1 : lot of lag
-> kX10 R2B001 - 03FEB1 : 2.1 rom modded : better than the official one : good but not for playing
-> 2.2.1 FROYO : very good but some bugs (like translation) and don't like the launcher, too slow for me : good for iphone lovers
-> Achotjan_Froyo_2.2.1 : 2.2.1 rom modded : the best for me : it's french lol -> Actually, found no bug, the best for me : very stable, better than the official, very fast (BB58)

Use Trips MIUI (2.2.1)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013210
Its the BEST MIUI rom with fully working camera and camcorder.
I am using it as daily rom. It is super fast and smooth.
many devs says here that ROM is perfect and EVERYTHING works, the problem is the with the definition of EVERYTHING,its differnt for every dev,for major roms you cant use camcorder so cant use goggles, bar code scanner ,video cam in all settings, there are some walk troughs and ways but then you cant call it everything
just go with 2.1,modify the stock one ,thats the best option
you broke the last phone....if there are too many lags, your wife will smash the phone this time
for us its all ok,for your wife dont take any chance!!!

Not all women just want their phones to work, period Some of us can flash our own ROMs. I used z's Freex10 but prefer wolf's CM 6.1.3 since it's very fast and good on battery. However different people have different problems with the ROMs they flash and it's worth paying attention to instructions
I strongly recommend you take look at this thread: talk.sonyericsson.com/message/59415 . It has many good ROM's for the X10 with some good feedback.
I have personally tried the stock ROM with JIT enabled and removed bloatware (did everything needed to make it quick) it worked good but the battery life sucked. Then tried FreeX10 and its pretty good and quick but yet again battery life wasn't any better than the stock one. Then tried CM by Wolfbreak and its pretty darn good. Battery life is def better and so is speed.
Im going to be honest with you none of these ROM's are even close to perfect. They all have slight bugs, all force close once in a while.
So here's my advice, if your wife isnt exactly tech savy + likes to use features such as the camera and wifi alot than stick to the stock ROM and wait for SE's update this year.
If she is a problem solver (isnt afraid of using google to solve any problems she has) and doesnt want a phone that lags to often and has good battery life than go for Wolfbreaks CM 6.1.3. Although wifi and camera can pose problems sometimes on this ROM
Hope this helps

[Q] Need advice

Hello,
a friend of mine just got an Xperia X10, and since she doesn't understand a thing abou technology or smartphones, she asked me to help her with it. I was wondering which ROM I should flash. She doesn't need something fast but buggy nor complicated, she needs something simple (I know, she needs an Iphone) and she doesn't need something that needs to be updated. So I was wondering, should she stick with the stock ROM or is there on I can flash for her? (Of course I'd prefer if she had Gingerbread but if it's too buggy, the stock ROM it will be). I'm asking for advice because I own an HD2 so I don't have a clue about X10 roms!
Thank you
Hello all,
I have a quite similar question.. i didnt flash my phone for the last 2,5 months since i use a quite stable rom now (only barcode scanner and video recording dont work).
I still use a stock kernel.
Now my question is, what rom is recommended at this moment that is:
1. stable (no rebooting etc)
2. can use a custom kernel (i like to have the 32fps cap removed)
3. is froyo or higher (i need adobe flash for my football stream watching)
4. has working wifi, bluetooth, gps, 3g, proximity sensor
there are so many rom varieties, that i dont know what to flash.
(in dutch we say: door de bomen het bos niet meer zien )
I think me and the above poster are looking for the same awnser (sorry for highjacking the thead buddy )
greets!!
Use freex10 beta 4 its the most stablest rom very good battery life i never had a single fc or bug nothing to say else then its running.froyo 2.2 and so far its the best out of the 10 roms i tried very simple nothing fancy

Read the threads, look at the screenshots and decide for yourself. FreeX10 is the base that all the 2.2 roms are built on, WB's 6.1.3 is a tweaked 2.2 with CyanogenMod settings and lots of tweaks already built in, MiUi roms are made to look like an iPhone without the normal android launchers, the CM7 and gingerbread ROMs are still missing some functionality. Its all just preference at this point, speed wise theyre all similar, most are relatively stable, it just depends what features and style you want. You could try a bunch of them and just make lots of backups and switch between all of them if you have a decent SD card.

It looks like you're the only one who actually read my post ^^ thanks I'm gonna try this
She could use the MIUI ROM of Trip, it's iPhonish and has some little bugs. (Very little) (Not the Gingerbread version since it's not as stable as Froyo)
ROM looks very sexy, fast, smooth etc... Easy to put some girly theme on.
Id suggest not flashing it. I've jailbroken friends iPod before and if anything goes wrong they come to me to fix it and they dont even appreciate the added functionality or use it. Chances are someone with little tech skills will appreciate the change. And if anything goes wrong you'll have to fix it. Unless there complaining about the phone I wouldn't flash it.

2.2 ROMs, does anyone truly have a full working camera?

With all due respect to the developers who I think do the best work out there for Android phones...I've tried a few of the new ROM's and I've not experienced the full working Camera claimed in several of the threads. I'm fine with the no zoom feature...I downloaded Vignette and it's all good.
It's the camcorder that I need working 100% with a new baby on the way. I am on BB 46 and I found that I had the audio delay issue with video recording. I applied the patch that came out for that issue and then I had issues with the video's freezing, particularly longer ones.
Does anyone run a 2.2 ROM and not have video camera issues in 720p? If so, what ROM/BB combo are you on?? After switching back to 2.1 last night I'm really missing the performance of the 2.2 OS and am dying already to get back to it
I'm not sure about the camcoder but I think Wolf's CM rom is quite good as he's constantly trying to fix the lag issues.
The stock camera/camcoder app can take things at a better quality, but the zooming is way too slow for me.
If you like the stock app, then you can wait for the GB update as some testers claim that they are going to use the SE camera app in our update.
I've made a couple movies myself in 720p and didn't notice any issues with it.
I'm on Wolfbreak's CM6 rom.

So no audio lag, no video freezing?
What baseband are you running? Are you on the stock kernel or a custom one? Did you just apply his latest ROM or any extra camera fixes?
thanks
I am using latest Wolf's cm6 on bb52. Cam and camcoder works perfectly.

did you say Zooming . Stock camera application or some other application .... and which ROM
I suggest going back to stock 2.1 for perfect camera, but remember to backup with xrecovery so you can load 2.2 when you want to.

You got a baby on the way....so you want the best possible quality for video/photo.
Stick to 2.1 stock. No 2.2 rom will be better.

BB shouldn't make a difference in the camera but you should flash to .52 if you really are on .46 and not .49. I have no noticable delay with WolfBreaks ROM with the hotfix on BB .58 but I haven't done any extensive testing either but in the videos I have made since he released the .061 hotfix I haven't noticed the lag.

Yeah I'm leaning that way, but the 2.2 performance overall is so tempting
I saw a lot of posts from you in the 2.1 camera mod thread. Would you recommend I stay clear of that and stay 2.1 stock, or patch the V10 camera upgrade? You showed some pretty impressive pics in that thread after applying the patch and playing with some settings.

Yeah, the thing is is if your running firmware .435 V10 wony work so well. Theres video/audio lag when playing back your recording. But when i switched to firmware .6 V10 worked awesome.
So if your running .435 use V8 as V9 and 10 were built over the .16 firmware. V8 was built over the .435 firmware.
Or you can just stick to stock which works really well itself. EV control is the major benefit.
I explained how to use it in the camera mod thread.

What I would do is this: Setup whatever 2.2 ROM you decide has least lag issues/best camera options then create a backup. Then flash a 2.1 ROM custom or not the camera is the same but only install apps you absolutely need and make a backup. Now you can switch back to your 2.2 backup and if you need a better camera restore your other backup and since you haven't installed a bunch of stuff it should load quickly. You could also set up the reboot to recovery script (doomlord has a thread on dev forum) and create a shortcut to it which would act like a widget to further speed up your restore process.
You should also upgrade your baseband because .46 is just old, .49 and .52 are the same generation and work with the same ROMs. Generally speaking the newer the BB the better the radio and battery and .58 is the newest now, although MiUi and GB ROMs work on older generation.

This I'll definitely consider. A dual boot situation at this point is more work than I'd likely use. Now that i've been back on 2.1 for a few days(keep in mind it's an optimized stripped 2.1 rom)....life's not so bad. I don't apparently watch much flash content on the phone because i'm not missing that. Really the coolest thing I miss is having the ability to toggle my wifi/apn etc from the status bar.

It isn't from the status bar, but grab Dazzle Widgets. It will let you toggle wifi/apn, even cellular radio (a feature I was missing from my crackberry days), along with brightness, sound, bluetooth , gps... I have a 7 setting toggle, and it works perfect....

[Q] What is the best rom to put on a brand new 2.1 phone

Hi
I have a brand new Motorola Defy on T-Mobile UK still running 2.1. It is red lens. There is still no official update for it.
Whilst I am quite geeky, I prefer my phone to just work. So once I have upgraded it I don't plan to do so again for another 12-18 months unless there is a really good reason to update before hand.
So I am looking for a stable update, that will still be compatible with new apps in 12-18 months time. I want the updates for the following reasons: speed, battery life, as few bugs as possible, stability, any camera improvements and 720p video recording.
Yes it is a long list I figure an Android 2.3 is probably better than a 2.2 for future proofing. Last night I spent a few hour reading the wiki and information about lots of roms.
I am not looking for help in how to do anything as there are quite a lot of info on the threads about it. I would just like to know which is the best rom/s to install now, from experienced users.
Thanks Alex
The official update for T-Mobile UK android 2.2 (froyo) has been out for a couple of weeks now - it's on the Motorola Software Update site ready for download. There's also the retail version there that would have no operator logo etc.
I'm using CM7 on my UK Defy (green lens on mine as it's an early one) & find it be the best ROM I've used so far - much better than the stock eclair it came with & better than the froyo ROMS I flashed (used 2 leaked UK 2.2 & a Nordic 2.2).
I'd recommend CM7 as it's very stable for me - no random reboots or freezing like would happen from time to time on 2.1 & 2.2 when I had those.
CM7 is still in development but it's working fine for me but if started using it you may need to flash an upgrade every so often but this was quite easy for me & only took a few minutes.
MIUI is also out for the Defy - haven't used it myself so can't comment but it seems popular.
Thanks for the info.
Can anyone tell me how I can get this posted in the General section?
I have no idea how it got into the Themes and Apps section.
It might be on the motorola website but over an hour later I cannot get the installer to recognise an internet connection, so I will give up on this. CM7 doesn't yes support 720p recording so I will try something different.
if you want a customisable and pure speed ROM, it's CM7, but if you dont plan to tinker a lot, then MIUI is pretty good as it's already a pretty nice looking ROM, with a lot of iOS influence
Im so good at listening to advice I ignored it all and tried to install 2.3.4 from forum.xda-developers com/showthread.php?t=1135901.
Somehow I not get a flashing red moto logo, system restore and bootloader do nothing and the phone does not show up on my computer. At a bit of a loss what to do now!
Remove battery, and put it back.. While starting keep the vol up button pressed. It ll take u to moto bootloader state. Connect to pc with usb. Use rsdlite software to detect it.. Then flash with any full sbf of ur choice to give back life to ur defy...
Thanks for the info. It sounds so simple. Sadly after hours of trying this morning I still can't get the phone to turn on.
First of all: check if your phone has a green or red lens (the answer is here). If your phone has a green lens, sorry, but nothing can be done for it to record 720p videos (hardware limitation). But, if your Defy is brand-new, you'll probably get the red lensed one, because green lensed Defy are old and, AFAIK, not selling anymore.
If you want speed and stability, with 720p recording, I recommend you to install Barebones Froyo with Hancock's 720p mod (mod available here). For better compatibility, ROMs based on the leaked GBs are the best option, and there is also a patch for it to be able to record in 720p (even though I wasn't able to get this one working on my phone - but many people did and are satisfied with it).
For speed + stability + compatibility, CM7 is the one to go for. But it doesn't have 720p enabled yet (some nightlies do, but they're not stable, and even on these nightlies, 720p is not working for everyone).
MiUI is also stable - and beautiful - but not as fast as CM7. For CM7's speed with the looks of MiUI, check here for the Meizu theme.
First thing first... Flash back your phone with full sbf. I would recommend start flashing froyo 2.2.2 since you're from 2.1.
I assume your Defy is red lens as it is newly bought right.. Flash gingerbread 2.3.4 and patch it the 720p followed with installing lgcamera for video recorder. Lastly patch it multitouch to have more than 2 fingers touch. You can find these all in the developer section. Above poster already guided you how to go into bootloader, clean cache and installing rsdlite drivers. Take one step slowly...
Sent from my awesome Moto Defy: Stock Rooted Gingerbread 2.3.3 - XDA Premium
Hmm... my Defy is a May 2011 model (taken from the serial number) brand new UK retail version from Amazon. Updated to 2.2.2 from the Moto site. Lens is clearly Green...
CM7, out of the question.
CM7... da best u can hav!
CM7 is really stable for defy!
Stock 2.2 GB rooted and overclocked is really nice.
Current custom roms break too much at the moment for me.
I need an infrastructure hot spot, stable wifi, gps that does not need agps to lock and working fm receiver.
I fancy a go with CM7 or miui, but I am going to wait a while for all the fixes to roll in. The devs need people to test and use these roms, but with over 2 million hits i think they have enough already
Ask yourself if you really need a custom rom yet?
I would recommend either a stock froyo rom or adlxmod froyo, as they are stable and won't require any real upkeep. Adlxmod can be updated directly from the phone itself and is hassle free.
CM7 is probably one of the best roms but has nightly updates almost everyday, which is great for people like me who want to be on the bleeding edge but not if you dont want to update.
Stock 2.2.2 GB retail via MSU has 1-2 random reboots/day marring its Kudos. Always when you really don't need it...
True, I forgot about that, I tried it for an hour and was amazed that the official was that bad. In that case nordic froyo is very stable and 2.3.4 motoginger is also very good too, just takes a bit longer to install though.

Really? Wow, mine has been rock solid with overclock to 1Ghz. My hero running MoDaCo and villain used to bork out all the time, but the defy has been up for 3 days now using gps, sms, email, wifi tether and web and not a single reboot or lock.
Running launcher pro with scale transition effect and it is very smooth and responsive - very pleased with it so far.
Sounds like I might be doing something wrong
I wonder if some folks hardware (mem and cpu) is a bit flaky? Might be interesting to see place and date of manufacturer of those units that are rebooting. Still does not explain why they can run CM7 well though.
Practically every rom has ran fine for me except 2.2.2 uk. I even used MSU and then re-did using rsdlite, both instances it was terrible. If I was a standard user and didn't experiment with different roms I probably would have been pissed you must be one of the lucky ones.
