bootlooping after fail full ruu rom flash question? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so i tried to flash the full rooted ruu rom via hboot, i had it sitting on my table with the batt door off and knocked it on the floor ( accident ofcourse ) and the batt came out halfway during the process so now it goes into the htc screen then blank htc screen then blank and i cant get into cwr so my question is can i salvage it or am i f**ked?

Have you tried hbooting to recovery? Volume up and power down when the phone boots up.

cant keep it in cwr long enough to do anything, keeps rebooting and when it does go into cwr it says something like cant mount cache i think

+1. That's exactly what would have worked. I know it's too late for the lad now, but for future users...
If you're ever stuck in a boot-loop and can't hboot into recovery, you'll need to copy and past the PGIMG05.ZIP file onto the root of your SD Card. This will be about a 200-400 meg file and would usually be a stock rooted RUU or stock signature RUU. After it's on the root of your SD, make sure it's the only PGIMG05.zip file on there! Then start the phone by holding down power + volume up. This will force the phone to hboot the PGIMG05 file which will get you past the boot-loop.

For some it's a good idea to have insurance too.
You can get a replacement minus the deductible if you "lose" your phone.
Just make certain you call VZW as soon as you lose it.
I don't suggest selling the phone for parts and saying it's lost, but I'm sure others have done this to cover their deductible.
Those without insurance...I have heard people have had great success with warranty replacement when using over the phone support when the phone doesn't boot or bootloops.
Since you send the phone back to VZW by mail, their replacement standards are much lower than dealing with their retail and face to face support.

I'm new to this, just rooted my thunderbolt the week before last (have rooted a total of 4 phones though since and created my own bootimage with sound and everything! lol!), and that's what came to mind when I read the original post but I didn't "know" for sure. Thanks for confirming it. This stuff is fascinating to me. I like to understand what is going on. I'd like to someday write my own rom. Perhaps it's a pipe dream but is there someplace you could point me where I could start my education?

Putting the stock Rom on took the root off of it but didn't fix my boot loop. So I returned it and got a free thunderbolt.

Your the reason Verizon hates rooters you are wasting there money on a device that is out of warranty because you would rather send it back than fix it yourself.
Thanks, jerk.

I believe you could start with os kitchen or another UI for extracting certain parts of a rom. I think in large part its knowing java script.

theres no guarantees but you are correct they probably wont notice that it doesn't work. What they will be looking for is if the phone works, water damage indicator and physical damage. They will probably once over the phone then return it as long as you are within your proper return period.

That's what I'm thinking. It works it just won't have as much bloatware on it. There just gonna resell it anyway. I tried to restore the nandroid of the original rom but once restored it gets stuck at the first samasung splash screen.

If you flash back via ODIN make sure the three button recovery works because if ODIN crashes mid-way (I've had this happen twice on my previous Vibrant) you've got a brick if you can't get it back into download mode via the buttons. Do a forum search. Or maybe if you wound up with the dreaded black screen of death that wouldn't be such a bad thing. They'd almost have to take it back then.
i just returned one the other day to best buy and the chick went through the phone for a couple of minutes, checked settings and menus and then also checked for physical damage. i had reflashed it back to stock anyways as bell's version comes with a bunch of specific apps. i was glad i did flash it back and i also relocked it to bell's network as i had unlocked it for use on rogers

It really isn't.. its better to be safe than sorry. At least thats how I feel.
And as far as that phone -- pc logo, I guess they would take it back but if they ask you how did it get that way? you're going to have to lie about it and its just going to feel really awkward.
Truthfully though, all they'd have to be trained to do is not accept returns if you see the superuser app. That'd be the easiest way to see if someone has rooted their phone & If you're not even going to take the effort to flash it back to stock, you're probably not going to delete that app either.
Just re-Odin it & call it a day. It took me less than 5 minutes to get back to stock & maybe another 5 to download the necessary files.
This will also ensure that you don't have any leftover contacts or log ins to facebook or anything like that on there (better safe than sorry).
Thanks guys. I was using my slide for the last couple of days by picked the vibrant back up and fell back in love. If I do decide to return it I'll put it back on stock. Thanks again guys.

Yup, that'll work as well. Or you could download a nandroid that is stock without root.
i got my vibrant the day it came out, from costco... $99
Swapped it a week later, Couldn't unroot it for some reason, but they didn't notice... then again it was costco
They won't care trust me i worked for tmo. These people don't even know what root is they might think its a plant. They just scan it out of their inventory and send it to samsung. If it has root on it they are not going to send it back to tmo just to find u or look to charge your account. That is soooooo tedious cuz u have to do an IMEI search which hardly works on TMOs internal network (i tried when i worked with them never really worked) so yea all they look for is hardware damage and the liquid damage indicator other then that ur golden.

Constant Reboot

I had just gotten home and set my phone down on my desk to go to the restroom (yeah probably kinda personal but whatever) and then I came back to my phone and saw it rebooting on its own. I waited to see if it would go back into the phone and it just kept loop booting after the boot splash screen.
I took the battery out, then restarted it, same thing.
I took the battery out again, went into the recovery, wiped everything, wiped dalvik, and wiped cache, and then installed a new revision of the ROM that I use (Synergy 3Dvo r456). It installed fine, rebooted to go into it, and now it STILL just constantly reboots.
Any ideas? I'm trying different ROMs but I have no idea why it would randomly just start doing this. It literally was from a span of just a minute or so, coming back and seeing it do it. No one touched it, nothing. I've been using it all day today without any problems what-so-ever too.
I would wipe everything and start over and flash the rom again. (Different rom) Have you flashed a different kernel for the rom?
And FYI, this belongs in the Q&A section. Be prepared for what is about to come.

I realized after I posted it but I can't move it myself. I can't delete it either.
I have a bookmark to the CDMA Dev section and forgot to go back to the beginning of the EVO 3D section then to the Q & A section.
Anyway, yeah, I've flashed multiple different ROMs. I've flashed the newest revision of what i was using, I flashed the last revision of Synergy before 2.3.4 came out, and I even flashed the sprint stock ROM. I still get constant reboots after the splash screen.
No I haven't flashed anything lately as far kernels.
Thanks for the responses guys, and like I said, if I could delete or move my own post I would've literally right after I posted it
Also, after each different ROM I wiped everything, wiped dalvik, and wiped cache.

If you're still having those issues I would run the ruu and take it back. Just my opinion but it sounds like bigger issues than just roms.
And people make mistakes, hopefully only the mature members will see this before it gets moved. I would pm a mod and ask it to be moved.

This is so weird. I literally have been using it for a week since I last did anything to it (flash different\updated ROM or flash a new radio) and obviously everything was working up till now since then. I put it down on my desk and come back and it's loop rebooting.
Any ideas what it might be so it doesn't happen again? lol
Make sure if you are S-Off that when you run the RUU you also set secure flag 3 in fastboot. Its in the guide, if you dont go back to S-On you will get a Process System Not Responding, this causes more reboots!
Yeah I just flashed the IMG file and it's still loop rebooting.
I'm gonna set the secure flag 3 now as we speak.
Thanks for the replies again guys.
EDIT: just reflashed that stock IMG zip file and then returned it to S-ON and rebooted 2-3 times max (it wasn't the 5 reboot like it does when removing S-ON and reflashing the stock IMG file). Now it's back into the phone and not rebooting anymore...wtf? Should I still try and exchange it? I bought it\upgraded to this phone <30 days ago so there shouldn't be any question of whether I can or not, right?

[Q] EVO 3D lagging, not as fast and smooth as before.

So I rooted my EVO 3D with unrEVOked, and I noticed some problems, so I went back to 100% complete stock. So after a couple of days, I started getting SMS errors and radio interfearances. Well I got it fixed a while ago, but it also lagged once in a while when I'm typing a message, sometimes scrolling through screens, when I make my phone go to sleep, it like sleeps then wakes up right away, but now it's been like around two weeks, and I've been having a little more lag when I'm typing a message, or making the phone go to sleep, so I have to keep restarting the phone to make it run smooth and fast. I updated the phone already, and idk if its the update or the root that messed up the phone, but if anyone knows HOW this happened, and how I can get rid of this lag, then PLEASE help me out, cause this lag is pissing me off. Thanks.

After you flash a recovery like twrp make sure you wipe everything including cache and the complete wipe of the phone before flashing any ROM, I think that's why your experiencing lag because you flashed over the stock ROM when you should of wiped everything before flashing.

Well, most people that first come here don't know what they are doing. I think what you meant to say is, if you don't even know where or how to find a guide on rooting and flashing then before attempting anything, there is one thing you should do first. READ!!!! Read the stickies in the dev forum. Read the links in the stickies in the dev forum. Use Google to find as much info on the internet as you can before attempting anything!!! Please, for your own good read as much as you can. We cannot hold your hand through it. You need to be able to do this on your own. Read until you become familiar with the terminology. Then if you still don't understand come back here and ask. If you do that we will understand your questions better and you will understand the answers better. We all started out knowing nothing about this. I read on these forums for 2 years before posting anything. I am by no means a professional, but I do understand how to search for and find the answers to my questions.

Been Away for About 4 Months

I've been Away for About 4 Months...and it looks like a lot has changed. Such as S-off is becoming more feasible...though I haven't tried it. And there is a new recovery (EXT4) that I have tried on Google Play and I like it so far a lot.
But now I am wanting to go from Gingerbread up to Ice Cream Sandwich, and I haven't got a clue where to start. I have found out that it is more than a simple update zip on your SD card.
So where should I start. I have bought Ext4 and installed it. It completely got replaced my Clockwork Mod recovery...just a question can we get Clockwork Mod back if we want it??
I have tried 2 different ICS roms and they both led to reboot loops, so I must be doing something wrong. I haven't S offed my phone because I'm a little scared of it still...read about loosing important things when you try it.
So any help is greatly appreciated to get me leading in the right direction
Thanks for the help

You need to restore to stock GB via the stock ruu or if you're on tmo you can jump straight to ICS by relocking your bootloader and loading the latest zip file via hboot, by placing it on your sd card and renaming it PH85IMG, need more info to provide further help.

I find this to be true as well. When I got my Amaze, I first read everything I could find on how to get it unlocked and rooted. THEN I did it.
Coming from an HD2, I found this device to be a bit harder to get a hold of when doing the unlock and root process. I'm not sure why, but I was confused until I read to the end of a number of threads, and even then I was nervous doing the actual unlock / root.
Totally agree. The hd2 was unique though because it started from absolute scratch. From loading from sd through winmo, then dual boot, then mag...It was built from the ground up and I felt like I was learning everything along with the devs. I felt like I really had a good grasp with that phone but this one made me feel lost again...Felt good when the wire trick worked first try though!

I just haven't felt the need to go S-Off on my Amaze... yet.

Phone bricked? Need help!

I just got my rezound today as a replacement for my tbolt. Everything was fine until I updated the software for ics. The phone just turned off after I pressed ok to install. Now, even after a hard reset, I get stuck at the splash screen. Was gonna run to verizon tomorrow but wanted to exhaust all of my options which would not void the warranty. Thanks!

Well your phone isn't completely bricked if you can get it to the splash screen. Try running the latest ruu or ota and see if that works.

Battery must be more than 30% charged and make sure the file is named PH98IMG.ZIP and not PH98IMG.ZIP.ZIP

Glad I could help! It should work, but if not, re-flash the ota/ruu another time because I've heard of stuff not sticking after flashing an ruu.
