custom roms? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know this might not be the right area to post but i cant post in the android development because i dont have enough posts but i need to figure this out.
I tried das bamf last night and it boots fine but it looks like its missing the notification screen power control widget and when it boots up it looks stock and doesn't look like it comes with really any extras same with the das bamf remix.
I fallowed the guide to root last night and it worked but im not sure if something went wrong and i dont know it. is there a way to check if its rooted properly and is this normal for the roms or does it sound weird?

If you weren't rooted you wouldn't be able to install the rom.
I'm going to go ahead and guess you didn't wipe anything when installing a new rom. Read a bit more before you start messing with your phone more and end up having to take it back to verizon.
And a thread like this does not go in Android Development, read the rules too why you are at it.

i realize i was rooted, just not sure if you could be partially rooted or not and if that would mess up a rom, and i wiped everything. i first tried the bamf remix and wiped the cache and the dalvik cache. i then flashed the regular bamf and wiped everything including the data. both times they look stock with a couple of extra apps and nothing else really listed that included in the rom.
also where are these rules? all i see is the description next to the threads.

You didn't wipe data when you flashed BAMF remix, there is the problem right there.
The regular BAMF isn't supposed to be anything radically different from the stock look. What exactly were you expecting to be different after you flashed it?
Rules - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013013

the onlything real different is a couple of apps were added like call recorder, kernal manager, spare parts, titanium backup and thats is, just a few things i notced not having right away were the notification power control, the 6 sgnals bars
these are the features of bamf 1.6
Features of 1.6
1.13.605.7 base
Debloated, which includes vzw framework, apps, games, libs, and permissions.
Tweaked filesystem and minfree.
Zipaligned (just once, not every boot, sorry), and deodexed. Odex and deodex perform the same after the first boot, when deodex roms get....odexed. This is merely to save space in /system and make tweaking easier.
Added Google Car Home, removed HTC car app.
HTC Hub and htcsense.com are partially working.
Removed Stocks widget, and app. Google has better apps for this anyway.
Superuser is fixed with rmk40's version, woot woot!
Our own busybox, version 1.19
Profile added to system/bin to help prevent certain malware.
Kernel has init.d support, as well as adb root, and usb debugging enabled on every boot (even from a wipe). Many optmizations, tun, cifs, nfs support. Overclocks to 1.5ghz. Undervolted from 1ghz and down. Stock voltage at 1.19, slightly overvolted past that.
Kernel will boot at 1036mhz! You must use setcpu to overclock, the kernel will not do it for you automatically.
Dusk theme from HTC Skin - "Dusk" Sense 2.5 (Z based ROMs) - xda-developers
No location indicator, thanks Bgill55!

Yes, I know the features, but I still don't understand what exactly you expected to SEE differently. Not every feature is something that is going to be "seen".
Re-download the rom, boot into recovery, make a backup, wipe everything, install the rom, it should all be fine then.

thats what i'm working on.

still didnt work, i tried the remix. still have the 4 bars for signal and and no notification control panel. I rebooted in to CWM, cleared the data, cache, and dalvik, then installed the rom, and then even cleared everything again and then installed the rom and rebooted.

hmmm... probably not the issue, but what version of CWR do you have?

i am running 3.0.2.5

Wow, I am stumped, i'm not sure what the problem is. Maybe someone else can chime in and figure out the problem.

anyone have any ideas?

MOD: Hybrid_R4 aosp/touchwiz *color* theme

Hi everyone,
I think I've finally (yet again) reached a point of contentment with my current rom/theme, and I guess its time to release it for anyone else that might want to use it.
First, this theme/mod is for Eugene's Hybrid_R4 rom ONLY
Please don't ask about applying it to other roms like bionix/fusion/master, etc. I use Hybrid_R4, so that's the only rom I'm releasing this for.
OK, so I love eugene's hybrid rom (aosp dialer and contacts ftw!) but don't much care for the mixed aosp/black-glass theme he chose to use, instead preferring my own mix of i9k/matte blue touchwiz, cm, and aosp elements all mixed together.
At the same time, a wonderful dev here, untermensch, has spent a lot of time fulfilling requests for new mods, and generally making the vibrant 2.1 rom not-suck, so I'm including a lot of his (and others) mods with this theme.
Mods Included (links direct to original threads):
Power Menu Reboot options (with vibrate mode instead of silent)
Improved bluetooth & silent/vibrate toggles
Fascinate, Epic, and AOSP android lockscreens
CM6 Music.apk with samsung media controller support
CM5.0.8 Mms.apk with puzzle-lock support
Fix for status-bar item press/focus states
My Comfortaa Font for samsung lockscreen clock
Various theme elements from my old i9000/matte touchwiz skin
Various status bar icons from the Droid X, CM6, Fascinate, etc. including tons of tweaks, coloring, etc.
My own AOSP style accurate battery mod (with untermensch's smooth charge animation)
Includes the newest updated build of Google Maps
and probably still a lot of little tweaks that I forgot about.
Screenshots here:
CM5.0.8 MMS Screenshots
Everything Else (I think, lol.)
Ok, so disclaimer time:
I am absolutely not responsible for anything that may happen from applying this mod. ALWAYS make a nandroid backup, and wipe your cache & dalvik-cache before rebooting, and fixing permissions doesn't hurt either.
I'm not providing a "revert" file, You made a rational decision to mod your $500 phone, learn how to fix it if you mess it up, or live with the consequences.
DOWNLOAD: Removed, sorry, tired of people using other people's work and not giving credit.
Flash via clockwork recovery, and you shouldn't need to disable voodoo to flash, since this only replaces a few files in /system/framework and /system/app
However, if you run voodoo, you will need to wipe your dalvik-cache manually BEFORE applying this theme/mod.
adb shell
su
cd data
rm -r dalvik-cache
If you get FC errors on boot, try wiping your cache & dalvik cache again, and fixing permissions either via rom manager, of clockwork recovery. If you still get FC errors, try a nandroid advanced restore of ONLY your data partition.
Thanks for looking, hope someone enjoys this setup like I do, and a huge thanks to untermensch and all the real devs here that have spent so much time making the vibrant a phone worth keeping.
cheers everyone, =)
P.S. all my work is free for anyone else to use personally, but please ask before including any of my mods/themes in your own custom roms.
Also, please think of it like a Creative Commons by-nc-sa license

I am also running a modded version of Eugene's hybrid rom, but I got as much TW out as possible and incorporated my AOSP pulldown mod found in AOSPish roms.
Anyway, I was implementing the bluetooth toggle / silent mode mod that you include here and found in one of the .smali files the "Wifi (ON)" text that you couldn't find before Don't know if you noticed this. I had ended up killing it a different way, but now I know it won't ever show up!

Hi,
Thanks for the message, would you mind sharing your code to kill the wifi text properly? I'd much prefer to implement that and leave the default padding/layout files the way they were.
Thanks in advance, cheers, =)

No Problem. Would have never found this if it hadn't been for the bluetooth mod
In services.jar, \com\android\server\status\StatusBarService.smali @ roughly line 3100 in the file you will find:
Code:
iget-object v3, p0, Lcom/android/server/status/StatusBarService;->mWiFiBtn:Landroid/widget/TextView;
const-string v4, "WI-FI (ON)"
So I just removed the text from the string.
I actually didn't revert my other method to make sure this took care of it, but I think it will. I never messed with the margins, instead I just made the text size incredibly small.

Removing Icon Text from stock Rosie

I found a bunch of places that people had modded the Rosie.apk to remove the text below icons in Rosie. I tried flashing a few zip's that were supposed to do this but it ended up just making Rosie FC because it wasnt for the Rezound's Rosie. I am running Ineffabilis v1.0 and saw on the MikMik Forums this has been done on many othe Phones/Rosie's. If someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. I tried moving the resources.arsc from a no text Rosie into the stock Rosie but that didnt work out well. Thanks for any help.
Go into tweaks ....its in there

when people reference "Rosie" they are usually talking about the sense UI "dock". its the bottom bar on your screen.
I'm sorry maybe I wasn't clear about what I am trying to do. I know there is an option to "Hide Navbar Label" but I want to remove the text below the icons on the home screens. I know Launcher Pro and a few others have this option but I would like to do it with the stock launcher. This is what I am describing LINK.
Here's a Rosie.apk from BAMF ROM, with the text removed.
Well I gave that a shot and unfortunately it does still contain text under the icons. I appreciate the effort though. Hopefully other people will want this MOD and it will be a little easier to come by. If I knew what to edit I would gladly do it myself. Thats the one last thing that would make my setup perfect. It seems like I can find it for every HTC phone but the Rezound and they refuse to work on my phone.
I will double check that I uploaded the right one but that's what I'm using...
This will have my modified phone icon, but I can reupload an original theme version at a later time. I pulled this straight from /system/app, so if it doesn't work, it's something you are or aren't doing....
http://db.tt/eEqKH87O
Well I guess it must be me doing something wrong. I have tried both Rosie's posted in this thread and for some reason I can get them to work but the dastardly icon text still exists. I am using one of the Beats skins, would that have anything to do with it? I am kind of at a loss as to what I can do. If there is a certain way to apply the Rosie please let me know. Unfortunately I feel like I'm losing the battle no matter what I try.
Try the default skin and see if anything changes. Also, how are you installing the different Rosie? Did your phone icon change to mine after you installed?
Yes the phone icon did change. I guess I will try using the default skin, switching the Rosie and going back to the beats skin. I cant see the beats skin being the reason the text would stay there but who knows. Ill give it a shot and keep you posted. Thanks for all the help.
*EDIT* Ok so I tried again after switching to the HTC skin and no dice. I have never had this much trouble with any mod on any of my five android phones. I have been insalling them by moving the edited rosie to /system/app and fixing permissions all via root explorer. I could try going the ADB route but I dont know why that would be any different. What was your process in getting it to work?
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/27022937/BAMFSettings.apk
See if there's an option in here to disable it. I don't see one on my phone, but I recall possibly doing something besides installing the different Rosie...
Alright I tried that too. It wasn't in BAMF settings and I have basically tried everything under the sun to get this to work. I could easily use LP or ADW but I like all the sense widgets. I guess it just wasn't meant to be. I do appreciate all you assistance. My Rezound just doesn't want to cooperate. Damn icon text! Damn you right to hell!
One last thing...you should do a nand backup and hard reset, just to see. There is absolutely no reason that Rosie I posted doesn't just work. I stuck it in a new ROM I flashed last night and it worked from the get-go.
By hard reset you mean format/wipe everything? System, cache, dalvik etc... or something else? Its funny because I even put the Rosie you uploaded into the new BAMF Rezound cubed before I loaded it and for some reason it still didn't stick. There must be something that I am missing. I am no android genius but I am fluent in ADB and have dealt with about ten different android phones. I just cant believe this is giving me such an issue.

Yes, hard reset = full wipe (lingo from my WinMo days).
I don't know what to tell you. I loaded my phone with CleanROM and had it up and running for awhile before discovering BAMF ROM had the textless Rosie...all I did was DL BAMF, stole the Rosie and dropped it in...did a restart with dalvik wipe and all was well

I also pulled the Rosie.apk and bamfsettings.apk from BAMF 1.01 and, after copying over the original to somewhere safe and checking its permissions, I dropped the 2 files into /system/app, fixed permissions, rebooted into recovery, wiped cache and dalvik and rebooted normally.
You will lose any non-HTC widgets on your home screens, but you can set them back up.
BTW, Bamfsettings is, itself AMAZING.
Dumped into the innertubes from my Rezound

You can drop apps in /system, first, change permissions, then transfer them to system/app without ever having any disruptions in data/home screens/widgets/etc. This goes for all apps...
Your Rosie is now textless?

[ROM]CapRomAlpha |Base - 1.43| Android 2.3.4 | Sense-Free | 03/19/12 | Odexed

Disclaimer: I do not offer this ROM with any type of warranty. I am not responsible for any bricks, or damage to your phone.
Hello, this is a rom I made for my own use. It is my daily driver, it is made for my use in mind. With that said, I am not putting myself out there as a dev, but instead I see this as trying to share and give back something to this great community.
CapRom Beta Features:
Please read the list below (including post #2) carefully for important ROM information.
Based on T-mobile 1.43, Android 2.3.4
Rooted/busybox/init.d/custom boot and data/app support

[*]Sense removed (note: this is not an AOSP rom)
HTC Bloat removed
Some google products removed
[*]Front buttons dimmed to help reduce LCD Bleed
Auto-brightness values tweaked to be a bit more aggressive (Source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488193)

Misc. Notes:
* /data will be wiped upon install.
OC Daemon Notes:
Please see the andrev_oc thread to learn more about it.
Andrev_OC Daemon has been cooked into this ROM.
I discourage any overclocking application such as setcpu or system tuner.
Daemon Controller has also been added. Please note this program is a bit buggy. If you do not see your frequencies, or it FC's, simply restart it. Make your changes and hit apply. Your changes will be saved.
Default settings: Device Sleep: 192-192mhz / Device Awake 192-1.56ghz (you can change these using Daemon Controller)
I personally use and recommend the following:
Nandroid backup to be performed
CWM 5.0.2.7 w/full wipe
Latest Faux kernel
If you have any issues with wifi, bt, etc, flash a stock kernel (see below for download).
[*]If you get stuck at a white HTC screen upon 1st boot, restore your nandroid backup, then flash a stock kernel (see below for download).
Known issues:
need to unlock screen to see caller ID. as a work around I suggest go locker.
Thanks:
Dsixda for his kitchen
Xboarder for posting the RUU i used and EKF
Faux, for developing kernels
Sybregunne for andrev_oc
Heyjoe66 for the stock kernel
HTC, for releasing this phone

That's odd. Market updated for me, calls itself Play or something now, but otherwise is fine. Let me know if it resolves for you.

Hi. Double0EK is right. To enable wireless tethering without upsell page, delete the apn then remake it.
Go to settings > wireless and networks > mobile networks > Access Point Names > then click on tmobile data. After you click on it, hit the menu button, then hit delete apn. Hit the menu button again, then hit new apn. Set the name to something like tmobile data. Then change the apn to "epc.tmobile.com" minus the quotation marks. Then click on back, then click on the apn you made. You should be good to go.
I'll look into both these issues.

If sense is removed, heavily implying it was once there, how can it be mistaken for AOSP?

[Q] Startup Tweaks - Fassy AOKP Glitched Build 31

First I want to say that I installed this ROM about 4 days ago, and I feel like I have just upgraded my Fassy to a Galaxy2 model. Everything runs faster and smoother. Great Job to the developers.
I have one question that I havn't found an answer to:
Under the ROM Control settings there is a category called start-up tweaks.
Under this there Tweaks to do among other things Zip-align APK's, Clear Data cache at boot, etc.
My question is that even though the "Enable start-up tweaks" is checked, and the ROM Control and NST Tools both have Superuser rights, if I check say the Zip-Align box it will check, but then if I back out a menu and come back it is no longer checked. Did I miss something or are these features not yet implemented in the ROM?
Thanks and Great work
honestly i think those startup tweaks cause more lag...i leave them off.

Trying to Hellraise Chameleon v1.2 - Samsung/AOSP hybrid?

Not sure if anyone else noticed this Rom over in the I9100 forums but it looks great. Pretty much the best of both worlds the smoothness of a Sammy Rom and the some of the best functions of a AOSP Rom such as dialer, SMS, contact, etc. I tried to use the Flash-aholicsTool with no success. It seems to process it okay but when you flashl the rom you'll get a lot of "System UI' has stopped working errors.
I might be in the minority but...this looks like it would be a great rom if someone with a LOT more skills then me was able to make it run.

Seems like a nice rom...I think I'll give it a spin...the Chameleon v1.2 rom I was referring to is based on the latest sammy release XWLPU 4.0.4.
Thanks
Hopefully you full wiped before flashing. If not that could be why it isn't working for you.

No I did a full wipe....with a format of the normal (data, system, etc) actually tried multiple times.
I was able to get it to work. I had on force close for android.phone but once I cleared it I was able to use and make a call without issues. I did not test out the Chameleon v1.2 very much. Just was curious.
So here is what I did.
1. Flash the rom completely and then booted it up completely.
2. Hold down the power button until the popup appears and choose reboot, then recovery.
3. Choose the Chameleon add on if you want it. (I did this step).
4. Go back to recovery and choose the i777updater-Chameleon I made and flash it in cwm. It will give you the mic swapped siyah kernel 4.1.4 and add other files for our button config, CSC files, etc.
5.Reboot and it worked for me. Again I did NOT thoroughly test for it as it just seems like a version of CM9 or something from my very limited use. Hope this helps.

RockRatt,
Thanks for the effort but it's pretty much not usable...It will boot and kind of works but it looks up and you'll get phone fc then system fc and then locks up....thanks again for trying it is truly appreciated.

I had that same problem the first time I flashed it. Then I went back in and flashed it again and had the one force close but then it all worked after. On the first flash it seemed to me like it was an issue with the cwm recovery version. I was on cwm 6. and when I went back to recovery I still had cwm 6. and thought that was weird unless they were using it as well. Then when I flashed it the second time, reboot the phone, went back to recovery to flash the add on then I had cwm 5. then I rebooted the phone again, then again went to recovery and flashes the zip I made to fix the button and all. I am not positive here but it did start working for me.
I only tried it out for a short time, maybe 30-45 minutes. It just seemed like a version of cm in a way so it wasn't of much use to me. I didn't really see any of the Samsung stuff in it.

It is unstable on our phones and I can't figure out why. Nobody in the I9100 thread is complaining about it, but I get nothing but SystemUI crashes. It is a really nice ROM, as is Serendipity....

OK I am downloading it again and will try to check it out. I will change a couple of things like the contacts.apk or phone.apk or? since that is the error that I saw. If I can get it to where it is stable I will send you a pm with a link to my edited version of it. I am just gonna kang it because there has to be something that can be done for us. I am NOT saying I will port it and post it anywhere. It is their work. I will just see what I can figure out for personal satisfaction and then share with ya what I did.
Solely because it is bugging me seeing that it isn't working. I have NEVER had an issue with ANY i9100 rom not working so gonna give it a try.

That'd be awesome, RockRatt. Let us know what your experiences are.
FYI, the phone crashes are presumably due to the CSC files from your updater zip. The ROM dev took out all the CSC stuff, and I did not get those crashes prior to your zip. The problems I am having are: SystemUI crashes unexpectedly and frequently, and "Preparing USB Storage, checking for errors" will sometimes remain in status bar permanently after boot.
The SystemUI crashes remind me of the ICS leaks back in the day that no one could figure out. Finally I think Entropy (who else?) found out it was related to mms APNs or something. I don't quite remember.
It's strange b/c we have been able to run i9100 ROMs with only kernel and keylayout changes. Not sure why this one would be different.
Things I have tried:
Full wipe, format system AND sdcard
Run ROM without external sdcard
Run ROM with inlcuded (SpeedMod) kernel to see if more stable
remove Busybox, unroot
Reinstall Busybox/Superuser
playing with APNs
switching modems
I think I got it all to work properly. So far NO issues at all. I will upload it and shoot whoever wants it through a pm. Again this is NOT my work so I cannot put it in here. I just got it to work and put it into 1 zip file to flash. I replaced the original kernel with siyah 4.1.4 mic swap from AJ. So shoot me a pm if you want it.

Use Ktoon's Flash-aholicsTool. It works perfectly with this rom.
EDIT: Data won't be enabled by default; after booting and going through the setup wizard, tick "enable data" and on the next reboot, it will connect.
I guess there's something either with my hardware, or with the way AT&T's network is where I live. Seems you and RockRatt have no issues, and others like me and OP have nothing but. It's weird because I can't think of any other I9100 ROMs being this device/region specific.

I had issues too. That is, until I used Ktoon's tool. What did you use?
I know i mentioned this to all who pm'd me and dont know why others have issues with it. I had it run for two days with no issues at all. And i used the EXACT same zip on my phone as those I gave it to. AJ also asked for it so MAYBE he can figure it out if he wants to or has time. I didnt plan on using it too long anyways, even with no issues for me and it did seems smooth. I like using CM10 or one of my ucle5 roms personally. It just didnt have enough for me to stay on it. I like more of a themed rom and it is basically a look alike (graphics wise) as CM9 to me. I didnt see anything of the samsung apps or asop apps I cannot get with CM10. Hope for those that are determined to get it working figure it out. Personally AJs UCLE5 is just as smooth and fast without glitches of any kind. My roms I made were based off his work and they just work. When i like living on the edge i use CM10 which also flashing it every few days pretty much cures my flash addiction.
Not sure why it doesnt work but if you look at the OP of the Chameleon rom he specifically states that data needs to be wiped or you will have issues. Not sure if that is what is going on here since I can only read what your issues are. But dont give up and i am sure you will get it to work as well. I did save a nandroid and may go back to it for more testing, but if i cannot replicate what you guys are seeing I dont know what else to look at.

Although I have provided this as a non-wipe ROM, YOU MUST WIPE DATA. You will absolutely encounter issues if you don't wipe. You can restore User apps but do not restore system apps, and especially system data.

Tips
Use an alternative launcher
I've included the stock AOSP launcher to keep everything, well, as stock as possible, but I've noticed Apex or Nova to be smoother
Turn on Force GPU Rendering
Ok I don't know the why's and how's or even if this is 100% correct but I've made some observations about GPU rendering in AOSP and Samsung ROMs:
Samsung ROMs seem to respect application manifests with regards to GPU rendering. If an app's manifest has hardwareAccelerated=false, the Rom won't use GPU rendering for that app.
AOSP ROMs seem to have GPU Rendering always enabled (despite what the Force GPU Rendering checkbox says in Settings) and override the hardwareAccelerated tag in applications.
I've noticed much smoother scrolling in applications which have hardwareAccelerated=false if Forced GPU Rendering is checked in Samsung ROMs. Root Explorer is a good example. Try it yourself - open up Root Explorer and fling the screen up and down a few times. Then exit (properly, using the back button, not just clicking the home button) and check Force GPU Rendering in Settings. Open up Root Explorer and try flinging the screen again. Massive difference.
For a smoother and more AOSP-like experience, tick Force GPU Rendering.
Chameleon ThunderBolt! Addon
I've selected a some particular scripts for Chameleon from pikachu01's awesome ThunderBolt! collection.
Better performance, better battery life through Linux kernel tweaks catered for Android OS and flash memory.
Better battery life and performance through usage of screenstate_scaling whereby it switches thresholds/VM tunables depending on your screen state.
Less RAM usage through zipalign.
The screenstate_scaling addon will perform VM scaling and governor tunables scaling to get the best of battery life and performance.
TCP_Buffers script in /etc/bolt_scripts to increase TCP buffers for better network performance.
All credits to pikachu01 for ThunderBolt!

FAQ
I'm already on v1.0/1.1 Do I need to full wipe to use v1.2?
No, a non-wipe flash should be fine, although if you encounter any issues please perform a full wipe and test again before posting about possible bugs. If coming from any other Rom, you must wipe.
I just flashed it and my phone is running like a snail
As with all new installs, give the media scanner time to do its work and the system to build caches etc before judging the performance of (any) Rom
MTP is not working on my Mac
Make sure you have Android File Transfer installed, and, oddly, click on Camera (PTP) in the USB computer configuration dialogue

I didn't use anything, just replaced kernel/keylayout. Then tried RockRatt's version (PM'ed).
I'm going to test it out. Will report back results.

Yeah, but you know how it is. It's just turned into one of those things I'm more determined to figure out the problem. Actually running the ROM is almost secondary at this point
Using Flashaholic did not solve it for me. When I got to work, SystemUI crash in the same place, despite being stable for 10+ hours at home the previous day/night. Guess it's just not gonna work for some. Thanks for the help

Ditto... using flashaholics and using rockratt's fix didn't help either. Something in the hellraising must be reverting some change that jazzk made to get his ROM running Samsung+aosp
