Moved to General. Please don't open threads to ask questions in development.
You can unroot. Stock ROMs exist here which can be flashed via ODIN, and which will remove root. If you are on O2 UK branded ROM, it is also available.
To reset the number of "unsigned" ROMs flashed though, you need to use a USB Jig (which is a resistor and a USB plug).
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1064894 for re-branding and unrooting an O2 model, and another thread is somewhere for restoring the stock firmware for a non branded one.

Current problem with rooting is that there is a counter for number of flashed custom kernels inside the phone. When you root, that number goes up. No info yet on how to reset the counter, so it's possible that it could affect your warranty. (Unlikely, but possible) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068522 - Kind of difficult though, hopefully an easier way comes along!
Unrooting would be done by flashing back a stock Samsung kernel/rom.
Advantages to rooting are currently:
1) Removing system apps that you can't remove normally.

3) Modify the framework.apk which let's you do things like skin some of the UI, such as changing battery meters and that.

Eh? You can reset the counter now mate
Shove a USB Jig from an SGS 1 into the USB port and it should reset and remove the yellow warning, even telling you that a custom kernel is an original binary... See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068522

You can buy a jig online or make one. It's a single resistor and a usb connector. Solder them together correctly and done
Difficulty to someone with the slightest electronics experience is zero. I'm going to pop one together tomorrow and it will likely take about 4 minutes, most of which waiting on soldering equipment to heat up.

Unroot - just flash one of the stock ROMs.
Stop samsung knowing of the flash? It's the "reset counter" thread.

If i just Root the Stock ROM without flashing any other Custom roms as I can live with stock.. will that have any effect on Flash Counters?.. I dont want to void warranty ...So i can flash stock rom again..

That has nothing to do with root on your phone
I'm not sure but I think it is related to the build machine used to build the kernel.
You unroot by downloading the latest official firmware for you region/carrier. If that is done then you're fine.
Ok, since i downloaded the KF3 rom from this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 thread it should be fine to turn the phone in for service, without they come back to me and say my root ruined my menubutton which have stopped working

well, there is a counter counting how many insecure kernels have been downloaded, you need the USB-jig to reset that, but in many cases the service centers doesn't check this at service.
I have already reseted the counter with a usb-jig and i have no yellow triangle or anything like that so it looks like everything is stock exept the kernel version.
hopefully they won´t even check it and repair it under warranty.
Sorry to bump thread. I flashed to stock firmware with odin3 but I think it is still rooted because the unlock tool, which requires phone to be rooted, still works. How do I unroot?
Flash full stock firmware = unroot if used the Chainfire CWM and Root method .

I already rooted my Galaxy S2 now I would like to unroot it (I add certain programs for superuser, so that I would be able to run them as root while unrooted).
What rom should I get? Considering my kernel is XWKDD-CL16 ...

Root can be reversed, and we can reset the flash count for unsigned kernels too
So yeah it should be undoable fine by flashing a stock rom and resetting download counter.
How do you go about removing a root? And is data lost?
You could re-flash back to the stock rom....but that will erase your data.
does the stock rom also update the kernel back to a secure one??

Would it be possible to unroot just using Superoneclick?
I tried once and it worked. However, does it completely remove all traces of root?

I haven't got one yet but there is a how 2 vid up on you tube and apparently you can get them off of ebay (item no: 250824932406)
I flashed Gs2 with lightening ROm v5 ... Now I want to get back to stock rom and kernel ... Although I managed to flashed my kernel with stock kernel after flashed my GS2 with lightning ROM. But now when I flash my lighting room to get back to stock rom, my phone reboots and keeps animating galaxy S sign and nothing further happens. did I do something wrong?

I got this jig for $8, it will reset the flash counter and get rid of yellow triangle also.

I am a newbie as well here but I thought I will share my experience.
I did have a bootloop and someone in the forum advised me to clear the cache and data using recovery mode. It worked.

the easiest and safer method to unroot is to flash the stock kernal
Hi Guys
Just bought a 2nd hand Ace (UK) locked and branded to T-Mobile 2.2.1
If I install the VillainRom am I correct in saying this removes the branding and roots the phone !
I have downloaded all the files from here etc...
Also I read all this 'Bricking' if I try and unlock the phone with the methods posted on here, do I chance this, or get a code for a tenner etc ?

And you can go back to your stok ROM. Just register in http://www.samfirmware.com/. There is all what you need to flashing back to your stock ROM.

Thanks, I kinda knew about the going back to original Rom, I regged on the Samsung site a while back, I have these files...
Well I used Odin and the 2.3.3 Villain Rom from one of the guides on here, all went well, (After I got the Ops file lol)
This also removed the branding and the phone has the Super User icon now, so I presume it is Rooted now...
The unlocking is dodgy from trying to read the code from the phone, so i'm just going to buy a Network unlock code...

Hi, I got my galaxy s2 in the post a week ago, but it was second hand, apparently unwanted upgrade. Anyway, is this an official kernal please, as I haven't seen it on any other device on YouTube when watching a meriad of reviews. So I have attached a screen shot of the kernal version. By the way this should be a sim free UK modal. I know this is random, but I have stupidly got my self a bit worried, could someone help me please? Thanks very much

It looks like they've possibly upped the kernel, but definitely rooted it. I very seriously doubt there's anything to worry about though. Looks like someone did the work for you
Nothing wrong there, you're rooted. If you're worried you could flash a different kernel! Easy as pie if you follow the threads available
Hi, but root checker says that I don't have root same with set cpu. Also, can i update it ota, to the new 2.3.4 when it comes out officially please? Also, I rooted my old htc desire, and then I wanted to root my galaxy s2 when ever here was a stableish nightly for ice cream sandwich, but will the fact it hasn't got an official kernel obscure me from flashing using odin to flash roms, other kenels and installing custom recovery, or because it says it isn't rooted, will it obscure be from rooting. Also are there any risks please? I am new to galaxy s2, I am used to the simplify of rooting the desire. thanks, also how do you know it's rooted?

Also, could you please be able to tell be, where in the procedure of rooting is my phone to be able to root, flash if someone has started the work for me please? I am just scared that if I start to mess around with trying to root it, and if someone has started the rooting the process, I might brick it. I don't know if I have explained this very well.

I got mine from Orange and the kernel was KE2. I think that KE7 is an official firmware, but the "root" in the name suggests it's already been rooted. Have a look in your apps for CWM or Superuser. If they're there then it's probably Chainfire's root that has been applied. If not then maybe they just flashed a stock kernel before sending it to you.
Either way, following the instructions in Chainfire's root thread will not brick your device (as long as you do follow the instructions )

my brand new phone from vodafone australia was kernel dukf4 with [email protected] in the title, but it was most certainly not a rooted device.
I am now on ke7, rooted, no dramas. dont have cwm or rom, phone does not seem to need it for my lifestyle.

I read a lot of threads but I didn't find any tutorial in here that explains how to root the S2 without increasing the flash counter.. Well I found one but it was concerning the AT&T version. I guess if you can do it on the AT&T version there must be a way to do on the international version but I didn't find anything...
I don't wanna take any risks with the warranty and I heard the usb thingy doesn't work on the latest firmwares.
So is there any way at the moment to root the international S2 without changing the flash counter ?

You can always just downgrade the bootloader and the USB Jig will work.
I updated to the latest fw with new bootloader, i then flashed the old bootloader back onto phone and then reset counter with usb jig. The old bootloader can be found on the site, just can't remember where at the minute

You could root with zergrush for a basic root. Then if you want custom kernels without starting the counter you could install the first one by using dd to install a zImage that includes CWM. After that only upgrade from CWM and you will never start the counter.

Thanks ! I knew what rooting meant but I thought all you needed to do is to be able to change a specific setting in the deep body of android .
I guess busybox is needed for su to work right ?

No, other way around. Busybox will need root. But busybox is VERY useful; if you are a linux user, it provides many higher level linux commands not otherwise available in android.

No I didn't update it I believe it still to be gingerbread. Wasn't sure whether it would brick my phone, updating it whilst rooted.

Sorry, I thought you wanted to ROOT. My bad.
If you update via OTA/Kies you'll get unrooted. In case you don't wanna "touch" your device in anyway.

I uupdated my phone using Kies and it didn't unroot it. What can I do? I Still have superuser etc.
Flash a stock rom. There's CWM flashable versions floating around here somewhere (look in General/search), or you can get Odin flashable ones from the usual places (Samfirmware, AndroidFirmwares.net). Ordinary stock kernel in rom package will overwrite your rooted kernel.

I'm not sure how to flash roms. Reason I want to unroot it is because I want to send it back to samsung. Do you think resetting it to factory settings would work?
