Hi - looking for some help. I have a Telus T959D Fascinate it is rooted via superoneclick. I have a ton of apps installed along with 3 paid apps (Titanium BU, Swift X keyboard, and ADW Launcher).
I installed ROM manager with the intent to get CWD on - says it successful but when I go into recovery its stock recovery.
Q1. I noticed it created an update.zip in root - do I need to flash that with stock recovery first?
Q2. Will putting on CWD in this manner cause my apps to get lost?
Q3. is there any step by step tips to root your phone, correct any lags (see a lot on voodoo but its a few months old) and ready it for custom roms?
Any tips and how to's would be greatly appreciated - especially to safe house my system as is.
Also, I noticed ROM manager and Titanium store things on the SD - I'm assuming I need to copy those files to a computer or external SD on my phone or I would lose any backups or recovery ROMs when I flash (is that correct).
Again, thanks for any help, and love this forum!

Hey man, what is it that your trying to do exactly?
Firstly, thanks for the reply. Essentially, I'm already rooted - done. Its the next steps that are tripping me up.
I would like to have my current applications backed up with some advice on where to put them using Titanium. I would like to have CWM recovery installed so I can get an image of my ROM as well as set me up to try others (CM7, MIUI, etc.)
Lastly, realizing now that the Telus Fascinate is a different beast - not the verizon model, more like a Vibrant.
Then, any recommendations from Telus F users on what can make the phone better - voodoo, lagfixes and what have you.
I do like my phone, I love the customization of Android (I jumped ship from iPhone), love that its Linux based, but still feeling my way around
Hi folks, first like to say thank you to everyone who puts this stuff together- mindboggling for me so it is.
ANyway, im not a techie, but im getting there.
I've rooted my S2, and i now have CWM and superuser on the phone. I have read ALOT of threads , and i'm a bit confused about my next steps. I have no sd card.
I want to get one of those ROMS to help the battery and all the other jazz(phone call recording sounds particularly sweet), but im wary of jumping into it... I have android 2.33 on the phone, and it was the kf3 kernal that i flashed on with ODIN to ROOT the phone successfully;
Q1. I was thinking of the lightning ROM for my phone- do i need to check which kernel and android version i have and match them up with a specific version of whichever ROM i go for?
Q2. Do i have to 'wipe' the phone before installing the ROM? ( i dont know what this means)
Q3. with the above in mind, can anyone point me towards a detailed tutorial on putting a ROM on the phone? ( i have looked honestly, im not being lazy- they dont seem to say what to do if youve already rooted the phone)
EDIT Q4- Should i have NOT rooted with KF3 V 4.0 and just installed the litening ROM, which would have rooted the phone aswell? - I'm really confused. Basically i can't figure out if ive made it harder to put a ROM on there, or easier.
EDIT Q5; will this method work ( im still not sure how to identify what rom fits my system)
How to install a ROM using CWM
Installing a ROM using CWM is a lot less hassle then installing via Odin. The ROM developer will specify which method of installing their ROM you can use, but it is usually done by a CWM flashable .zip.
To flash:
1. Boot into CWM as described above
2. Navigate to 'install zip from sd card'
3. Select it, and then navigate to 'install zip from sdcard' again!
4. Select the ROM you downloaded from your sd card
5. Navigate down to yes
6. Let CWM install you new ROM!
Many Thank yous in advance for anyone who can help this cabbage (ie, me).
Cheers

A1 No, lighting Rom includes its own kernal and will update your phnes android version when you install it.
A2 you should to make sure their are no stray bits of data floating around. Go to cwm and put it into recovery mode. clean the cache, the go into into advanced and clean daavik cache.
this is what is mean by wiping the phone. if you want you can also do a factory reset.
A3 the method in in question 5 is the usual way to do it from cwm but make sure that you copy it into the internal sdcard.
A4. rooting makes it easier in as it gives you access to the file structure of the phone. It is always a good idea to root the phone, if you want to customize it.
A5. To use cwm mwthod any rom has to come it a zip file version. Tar file versions are used with odin but in any case always follow the developers instructions to get the best out of the rom.

Hi Cosmic blue,
thak you so much for coming back to me, i really appreciate it.
So if i can just clarify my proposed method then from the above with a few more questions;
1 go to cwm recovery and clean the two caches you mentioned above while in recovery mode. ( i see the menu now in recovery mode- would i be right in saying the ones to select are 'wipe cache partition' and i can see the dalvik one in advanced no problem)
2 I need to get the rom zip file from the developers thread. SO i download that to my laptop- then whats the best way to transfer to the phone internal sd card as you said...Do i Need an external sd card yes? (sorry, i know this sounds dumb )
3 ( please ignore this one if youre busy- no big deal as i can do more research) can you recommend a good ROM thats not majorly complicated, saves the battery, looks cool i suppose and has some good extra fucntions? as i was saying i liked the lite'ning one but ive read some places that its a bit of a battery drain...
Thank you so miuch again, its so appreciated.

1. correct, wipe those 2 to prepare your phone.
2. no, you do not need an external card. Go to the laptop root directory, you will see the internal sdcard of your phone as a drive, create a new folder in the phone sdcard and copy the zip file to it.
then detach cable and go into recovery and flash the zip file.
3. you will need to experiment with different roms. Lite'ing is fine all custom roms are a bit of battery drain because of the extra functions. But the battery life is still better then the stock as they have tweaked the battery to discharge slower for longer battery life.
4. Everyone has different preferences. try different combinations of firmware, kernal and modem till you find one that you will like.
The problem started when after I flashed the recovery with Odin. When I booted into the recovery and tried to install the superuser zip file I keep getting this message: "E:cant copy META-INF/google/android/update-binary". I get this message when I try to flash a Rom: "E:Can't open /sdcard/update-unamed-1.3.1-full.zip". I've been trying to flash the CM7 nightlies and the "Unamed" Rom. Any help with this will be much appreciated.
Also, I ended up having to install superuser via SuperOneClick
Honestly, I stopped trying after the phone kept confusing me with SD Card, External Card, and Internal Card/External SD Card BS it was giving me.
I just left my phone rooted, lol.
Sometimes, this tends to happen if you rooted your phone with an anti-virus software running on your PC which can hinder the rooting process. (always the case with my HTC Inspire 4G). So turning it off could allow you to re-download Odin, and run the program again to root it again so it can install the proper files.
Once you get it re-rooted, get into CWM, do a backup, and Clear your Cache, Data and reinstall the ROM from your Internal Card or External Card (which ever you used to place the ROM in).
Good luck.

CWM and root are not even related....
root is root access to your OS /system and its functions. it has nothing to do with RECOVERY or anything outside of a RUNNING OS. i wish everyone would understand that.
as long as CWM is there, AND WORKING PROPERLY, rooting has nothing to do with it. you can flash a new rom from bone stock OS, as long as you have the CWM kernel.
@OP, you have these files (roms) located on the INTERNAL SD right?
I think that's why @homescrub said:
"and run the program again to root it again so it can install the proper files."
Proper files being cwm. As of yet I don't know of a way to install cwm without root on this phone. I know the captivate previously allowed an update to be flashed using stock recovery to get cwm.

how do you flash CWM?
through ODIN
that does NOT require root. you dont flash it via ROM manager....so whats the need for root to add CWM?
and what is this 'proper files' crap? you either have CWM or you dont, its not half-assed
nah its cool. im done here. i will let the misinformation fly. let the noobs run in circles. this website is going to **** so fast these days.
No man ....you should help these guys....just lighten up...and I apologize for coming off like that.....and one place I CAN understand is seeing what's going on in the forums....it is chaos sometimes.....I am just tired of seeing noobs who need help get ripped up.....just as much as I am tired seeing noobs posting +1 and Great Job, in the Dev forums. I just think this is the place to help them get a good understanding so there is not another new thread with this same question.

Having troubles with my GSII. Need to flash a new ROM but I don't want to lose all of my contacts, messages etc. so which ROM's won't wipe the data on the phone? Or will any ROM work once I don't wipe the data manually from CWM? I'm on an old build of a Gingerbread MIUI ROM, but would flashing an ICS ROM work fine?
Need to do something - it's the last straw before I bite the bullet and buy an iPhone 4S (saving myself €680 in the process).
Backing up in CWM shows "Error while generating MD5 sum!" when it's nearly complete, backing up to the internal SD card as when I try a normal one it comes up "Error while backing up boot image" straight away. Going out to buy a 4S at around lunch time if it doesn't work so I need help quickly.

it is very simple to backup your contacts/call logs/data/apps with MIUI backup, if you are moving MIUI to MIUI
it is strongly recommended to wipe your data before moving from GB to ICS.

MD5 checksum error of CWM of the MIUI roms is a known issue,
solutions are:
1) flash a siyah GB kernel from CWM and reboot to its CWM and make a back up,
by default backup will be stored to external SD, make space for atleas 1.5 gb (depends on your apps size, if only few apps 1 GB is enough)
if above also is giving same treble, use the second option which worked for me nicely..
2) Download ROM manager, falsh CWM version from thata, reboot recovery from Rom manager from there make a Backup..
CWM will not read the Backup from External SD by default move your backups to internel backup forlder of Clockworkmod.
then you dowload the latest GB version MIUI, either form XDA or from MIUI sites and flash from CWM, again flash Siyah

bootloop is the result of launcher & Themes, when I tryed to change themes I got FCs and bootloop on reboot, only worked was factory data reset and flash the same ROM zip from CWM...
but you are concerened about your apps & data, by flashing the siyah I dont think resolve bootloop issue but you may be able to make a back up from its Recovery...
since you have no access to interal SD now, copy to external SD and select kernel zip from install zip from external SD card. i hope it will work..
otherwise you will have to flash Tar version of the Siyah kernel form ODIN in download mod

Quite a lot. Maybe it came across as a little rude, but there's no denying that iPhone's are the most reliable smart phone on the market. Most Android phones need you to root/flash to get the most out the system, with iPhone's this isn't the case. I know they're not the best phone on the market, which doesn't delight me but I'm contempt owning one. Knowing that something is not likely to go wrong - leaving me without any of my precious data.
With my SII all that happened was the phone died, and then all of a sudden it started boot-looping, after working fine for about a month (had a similar problem before).
Not happy about being trapped into Apple's eco-system, but if that's what it takes to have a reliable phone with superb battery life then that's what I'm going to do. And once there is a jailbreak for the 4S on 5.1 I'll be doing it ASAP.
Anyway; flashed that kernel to my phone. Worked a treat, and the whole back-up was successful (changed my CWM to a touch version too lol). Thanks a lot ZACQ8.
Here's hoping that flashing a new ROM will work smoothly. If so I'm going to sell it, get the $$$, bring the 4S back (I've got 14 day cooling off period) and try out the One X.
I know I should really just be searching but I doubt I'll find a specific answer so... does anyone have suggestions for a reliable ROM?

From this website? http://www.fjsoft.at/en/
Quite a generic name for a piece of software, and does it work without actually needing access to the phone in an 'off' state? As still getting boot-loop meaning I've no chance of getting into the phone.
I expect it to not work very nicely with Mac OSX though. Really sounding like an Apple fanboy, eh?
Also, the ROM I'm looking for (quite specific) has to be 2.3 and a non-wipe ROM. Currently downloading 'XWLA4 by TugaPower'. The non-wipe version, let's hope.
Successfully flashed that ROM, getting FC's when trying to enter my contacts. So then went into CWM, tried to restore my old backup but it's saying: "MD5 mismatch!"
How exactly do I fix this to be able to flash my backup of my previous ROM?

Hi, i'm new in this so i just need answers for couple of questions.
1. Can I flash new ROM from phone storage or does it have to be from SD card?
2. If i flash from SD, will new ROM be installed on phone storage or SD card?
3. When i do that, will all my data be deleted from previous ROM?
4. When i flash ROM do i need to again root my phone and install titanium backup?
5. what Custom ROM's are really good? your suggestions
1. Can I flash new ROM from phone storage or does it have to be from SD card?
depending on what kind of custom recovery you are using, you can install it from internal phone storage and sd card. Use philz touch recovery to have both storages available for you to choose roms from
2. If i flash from SD, will new ROM be installed on phone storage or SD card?
if performing a clean flash all data from phone would be lost as the primary step itself is to wipe data. Data on external sd card remains intact as long as you dont format it from recovery
3. When i do that, will all my data be deleted from previous ROM?
all data would be lost when you do a data wipe and devs take no responsibility for any loss wrt to your phone or data and so their piece of advice before you flash ANY rom or mod is to : Back up Back up and Back up. Use titanium backup to retain apps and a nandroid backup from recovery to be on safe side and stay away from after effects of a bad rom flash.
4. When i flash ROM do i need to again root my phone and install titanium backup?
rooting phone again is not required after installing custom roms since they already have the SU binaries included when the rom is cooked. Installation of Titanium back up after every rom Installation is must cuz itz an app on your phone memory
5. what Custom ROM's are really good?
again depends on what you like to see on your phone. If you like having the stock look on your phone and still enjoy benefits of using a rooted custom rom go for roms based on sammy firmwares. If you want to go a step ahead and have a nexusish look on your phone and be more open source go for CM and AOSP roms
thats not all. XDA has a lot of threads about flashing roms and recoveries. Do a lot of reading and proceed carefully at your own risk before playing with your phone.
Cheers
Well its so easy..
1- yup you can..
2- no it will be installed on te phone..
3- most of the roms are rooted.. but you can instal supersu.zip to root it or update the root panery, and you mostly will not lose the costem recovery..but some romes offer to download custom recoverys..
4- i think temask's unofficial cm11 is good.. and you can install omega touchwiz rom..:good:
