[Q] Handcent Services - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been using HandCent for about two weeks now and I really like the App. I have just discovered this whole "HandCent Services" thingy they are trying to sell me. I want to be able to have a backup of all my SMS texts at all times and be able to have them on my phone after a clean wipe (kinda like how Google syncs contacts). Or at least have it on my SD so that when I restore my backup from TiB it will be there.
So I'm asking ya'll's opinion: are the HandCent services worth the $9.99 they want a year? Does anyone use them?
Any insight would be appreciated.

If you don't want the headaches of trying to use TI Backup to do this (I most certainly wouldn't), then I'd say it's worth the $10/yr. I mean, seriously, what's $10/yr for this?
The only thing to be aware of: the restore process can take a while. It is most certainly not the most optimized process. Let it run overnight and you should be good, though.
(Disclaimer: I don't personally use these services but have researched this a bit. Ultimately, I really don't care about keeping SMS/MMS across wipes.)
EDIT:
These services used to be something like $7/month. That was ridiculous and most certainly NOT worth it.

Don't pay for crap. Also, I like Go SMS better. Fast and simple.

Does Go SMS allow him to backup and restore his SMS/MMS messages from one phone (Motoblur) to another (Sense)? Handcent Services does. If you can't provide him with an alternative, then how can you claim it's crap? It certainly provides a valuable service. If it's worth $10 or not is the question. I wouldn't call paying a good dev for valuable services paying "for crap". :-/

How do I disable the stock Thunderbolt messaging service so I don't send texts twice?

No need to disable the stock app, the text will just get sent once.

Yes, you have to open the stock app and disable the notifications there under settings.

Anyone using Lookout Security and Antivirus???

I installed Lookout security on my phone to find it if I lose it. I have never had a problem with it. I am now running the latest MIUI 10.1.28 and reinstalled Lookout. The built in firewall keeps informing me that Lookout is trying to send SMS. This seems a bit fishy to me.
Nope......
I have it with CM7. No problems with it and nothing at all like what you mentioned.

I'm on MIUI Nexus Prime 360 v1.3 with Lookout. I had an experience similar to yours, I uninstalled it and downloaded a fresh version from the market. Since, that time I only use the MIUI Backup to restore it.
Why would Lookout keep trying to send an SMS message? Is it trying to ask for an update? OR, is it sending them my call patterns, usage, or personal information?
Although I to am confused as to why Lookout looks my texts my texts, (which us why that popup only happens when you receive a text) I have found that if you open the superuser app and click on Lookout >SMS > Allow... you will no longer get that popup.

Yeah, but they will be reading my messages? Creepy.

That's because you don't see the sms messages being sent back to Lookout. Either they are database update requests or your messages are being sent to them? Just don't know.

[Suggestions] Best App for Texting from Tablet

Looking for an App that will let me send texts from my touchpad to my phone,
I have seen a few but i really want to hear what other people are using to get it done. or if this is just something i like the idea of
I have a google voice account but i hate that it doesn't use my real phone number, also before you talk about the integration, its UI is horrible so i would rather not use it.

I don't know about texts because of your touchpad doesn't have phone signal, but why not just email yourself?

I think he just wants to be able to use his tablet to send texts via his phone. Meaning, he can come home and plug his phone in and use his tablet to send/receive texts from his phone. I am interested in the same thing actually. I don't wanna tote my phone around with me, if I'm chilling downstairs and using my tablet.

if you havent done so on sprint. get on Google voice.(its free for sprint) u can use the official Google voice apps on your tablet to send text thru wifi, also received them.
i tried a bunch of apps on my touchpad but never found one that works as good as google voice. my touchpad and phone are both set up with google voice and it's integrated with my sprint phone number so no weird number to deal with. works great for me. only thing is once you integrate, no more going back to vvm unless you call sprint to get it set back up.

If google would spend about 20 minutes working on google voices UI I would probably use it.
I will look into airdroid, tablet text also has a decent amount of good reviews so I have been looking into that as well

Personally I like the UI. And the speed between syncing is almost instant when you have push notifications enabled. Here's a screenshot of it if you want to see it

Just an fyi: If you want the push notifications, you have to press the version number like 10 times or something (I didnt count I just hammered it until the option became available lol)
TexTab without question. I love it, and the UI is nice and simple (uses BlueTooth). It uses your messaging app in that it uses your phone's signal and leaves the text message in the history of the conversation on your phone.

Plus one on mighty text. Use it in chrome and loaded the website on my iPad a few times

Works very well and integrates SMS, MMS and Voicemail into one app - it's sort of a "super" visual voicemail" - plays back voicemails nicely. I prefer it to VVM
Lol voicemail. What an ancient concept.
TextSecure for SMS and mms. Encrypts your texts locally and if the receiver is using textsecure as well then the text can be encrypted from end to end.
I won't go into detail about why I need this but there it is. Use it

It may be ancient but I at least wanna know what the message was that was left. VVM isn't even close most of the time.
I installed this app and it looks nice. I did find out though that after doing this, I could no longer send messages using the stock app nor using handcent. But I may stick with this app.
Update: Well I uninstalled this app and I still can't get my stock app or handcent to send a text message. Any ideas how to fix this? Getting to just do a nandroid restore.

[Q] missing voicemail app

Phone: HTC EVO3D s-off running ICS/Sense to maintain appearance of being stock. At some point in the past few weeks, my voicemail app decided to vanish, possibly during a hard reset or during a drunken rampage in which I decided that all sprint bloat needed to die. Either way, I can't seem to locate a direct replacement in the play store. All I want is something to inform me of when I have new voicemails, even if it is just the standard voicemail.apk that comes with the phone. Can anyone help with this?
Have you tried Youmail? It's pretty good and it's has its own visual mail app or if you have Google voice use set it as your voice mail

I'm using youmail currently, but I'm not a fan of the stock greetings and haven't found a setting (if one exists) to personalize. I get a lot of client calls and would prefer that they hear my voice instead of a computer. Thanks for the recommendation!
I think there is a flashable zip of the Sprint voicemail app somewhere. I'm on my phone so I can't search easily. You could download a ROM with the app and get it from there.
If you have Sprint, you can get into your voicemail by dialing your own number from your cell phone. Other companies might work the same way.

Try one of these, should probably work fine. Not really anything you can mess up anyway.

Go SMS Pro....Gone Bad

I've been using Go Sms Pro since it first ce to Android. It was hands-down the best sms replacement in my opinion. The last two updates however have changed my opinion about it. They started pushing Ads like those annoying scam apps. The last one in particular made me uninstall it. It now places Ads on the bottom of the screen. I'm done with them.
Is there any app besides Handcent, Chomp, Texter that is a good pop up sms replacement. There are many apps on the market aand I've personally come across some awesome apps that wasn't on the top of the list of best apps. So is anyone has some suggestions on apps they use or come across, I'd appreciate it.
