I bought a T-Mobile Galaxy S T959. When it turns on, it says "Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000", then the screen changes to "Samsung VIBRANT" I reflashed back to stock using odin, but it still shows the same gt-i9000 boot screen.
Does anyone know how to change it back to normal? So far, I have rooted the device, installed clockwork and flashed to the bionix rom, and installed sgs kernel flasher from the market.
I watched some videos online that showed the kernel boot screen changing after flashing a new kernel through sgs kernel flasher, but I dont know much about kernels or which one needs to be flashed.
Does anyone know what needs to be done, or have any ideas I should try?
Thanks
Well theres nothing wrong with that but it seems like it bothers you so which kernel did u used to odin???
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
This is happening because the phone in the past was flashed with an I9000 based kernel. Eugene I beleive used to make some back before we had Froyo. I also had that bootup screen for a while. I don't have it anymore.
I believe I lost it through one of the many kernel flashes I have done. Just flash some of the latest kernels. It MAY clear this issue for you though it really is not an issue.
It is just the wrong picture stuck in some folder on the phone. There is no harm done to your phone nor is there anything wrong or defective with it. The only thing is that it may bother you. If it does bother you, go on a flashing spree and flash some kernels and roms. I think sooner or later you will get rid of it without even trying when you upgrade your ROM/Kernel.
Thank you, I appreciate your replies.
I bought this phone from someone online, so it was like this when I got it. Therefore I am unsure of which roms/kernels were flashed onto it in the past. I have flashed many roms, but those only seem to change the boot animation. The kernel boot screen is staying the same. Like I said, I dont really know much about kernels.
Would there be one which you recommend I try that might fix it?
I know its not really a problem, but for some reason it just annoys me seeing it say gt-i9000 at startup.
My ultimate goal is to be running the latest build of team whiskey's bionix rom. I have no clue which kernel I should flash or that would work with it.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Try the bullet kernel.
http://edtdev.com/forum/topic/86-kernelbullet-1420ghz-4202011/
It is the fastest kernel for the Vibrant to date (1.42Ghz STABLE on most phones, outstanding battery life, all features and tweaks). It also has a custom boot screen which MAY replace your I9000 one. I'm saying MAY because I am not fully sure. In either case it is either the best or one of the best kernels for this phone to date.
As for ROMs, Team Whiskey quit Vibrant development around late February. They have moved on the the Nexus S and G2X so I'm not sure their latest ROM is the best. It's certainly an amazing ROM but there may be more recent ROMS which have more features or speed. Choice is yours.
You may try flashing some Froyo kernels from Eugene. Since his kernels likely introduced the I9000 boot you have now, flashing newer versions MAY get rid of it...who knows. Alternatively, there is another option if you are SET on getting it out.
If you flash with ODIN and also check repartition, I beleive ODIN will WIPE everything off the phone completely. Yes, all backups...everything will be gone but it should in theory also take that I9000 with it. It's a bit more risky than normal ODIN but the choice is there if you are set on it. Try the other options first and if you decide to do a repartition, READ on how to do it properly first.

Thank you, I tried to flash a few kernels and it seems to me like what you said about the wrong picture being stuck in the phone is what the problem is.
I Re-flashed with Odin and did a re-partition as well, but the image is still there. After rooting and flashing the bullet kernel, it still shows the gt-i9000 screen and then it switches to the bullet screen instead of the vibrant one it used to be.
After trying a few kernels, they all seem to replace the screen after the i9000 kernel screen.
Im going to keep trying to get rid of it, but i wanted to thank you for your response as I am one step further now.
Ah. Dumb-stuck image problem then huh. I thought the kernels would flash it right out. Well...you can ask someone above me about how to get it out.
Go to the EDT dev website. www.edtdev.com and join their IRC. See if a developer there can help you out with getting rid of it.
Also try the Team Whiskey IRC chat. They have more devs and people in their IRC that may be able to help. Their chat is located here:
http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=teamwhiskey&uio=d4
I'm sure someone at those IRC chats will help you out.
try flashing the stock "param.lfs" file through odin
Okay I have had this problem and know exactly how to fix it. What happened was whoever had that phone before you flashed an I9000 gingerbread kernel with I9000 gingerbread bootloaders, that's why it shows that every time. Here is what I did to fix it. I don't know if it has to be done this way, this is just how I did it.
Step 1: download both of these files
PDA:http://dl.dropbox.com/u/23420259/Eugene_JK2_Froyo.tar.md5
PIT:http://dl.dropbox.com/u/23420259/s1_odin_20100512.pit
Step 2: Flash those files through Odin, but make sure you uncheck repartition, as I have read that if you leave it checked while flashing those files you might end up with a hard bricked phone. It will boot straight into recovery after it's finished flashing and will have some errors, that's okay just click reboot system now.
Step 3: Odin back to stock 2.1 like normal.
After you do that and Odin back to stock 2.1 wait like 10 minutes and then flash whatever rom you like. After step 2 though you should be rid of that awful GT-I9000 boot screen. I just Odined back to stock 2.1 to get rid of the broken recovery. I don't think you have to do this.
Let us know if this helped you, so that if it doesn't work someone might have an alternate way to fix it.
Oh also before I forget, I have to give credit where credit is due. Those are files are Eugenes files and I am in no way saying that I developed or had a hand in developing them.

OK, Heres the scenario, This is a replacement T-959 vibrant, sent from either TMO or Samsung, really not sure! My 1st phone never had any issues with modding, and always cooperated! Until I used KIES to update one day and It bricked, because of primary and SBL corruptions. [I know!!, found out 5 mins too late about using KIES] Anyway, since Ive had this replacement phone its done nothing but fight me from the start, never has acted right I think and I feel there's something wrong HW wise with it. My problem with it now, is it wont accept any other custom ROM I try to install, and only works with either 2.1 or 2.2 stock OEM ROM's. Meaning, Anything else ROM wise, It wont go past the last part of boot sequence, and just keeps looping, and does it over and over again! Ive tried all of Simple Honeys, Toxic 8's Roms, and each time it goes thru the loading successfully, and then starts it boot-up, but every single Flash Ive done, ROM wise, it hangs up and loops at the very last part of booting up. Ive come to realize now, it isn't the ROMS, but the phone " I THINK" Each time I tried a Custom ROM install, I started with stock fresh JFD install, and wiped and cleared out everything before starting another ROM install, but with each attempt that I try to go past anything other than Froyo stock, It does this boot loop problem at the final part!! It seems like who ever sent it to me, did something to the phone to prevent this. Modding it I mean. like right now I'm on Eugenes Froyo, with the 2E RECOVERY, It was working fine, until I upgraded the Eugenes kernel, which is suppose to work with this ROM, technically the phone still runs, but as soon as I did this, I now cant get into the two drives as mass storage to tranfer files, says insert disk, like as if its a CD Rom drive, WTF!! And like I said, this phone wont accept any other ROMS now, past stock Eclair or Froyo OEM and kernels as well. I don't understand what the problem is, My guess is they flashed something to prevent modding or its just a corrupted HW issue, anybody ever seen this before. I wish I had just JTAG'd my first phone with Josh over at Mobile Tech, and saved myself all this heartbreak and frustration, but its too late for that now! So anyway, I need to determine for sure if this phones screwed, HW wise or if there is SW to get this phone straighten out, to where it'll work right like my first one used to, and begin to accept custom ROM's like it should be able to do!! I'm at my last end with this phone, and I'm desperate to get a solid reason/answer for whats happening here, because Ive followed all the instructions and standard procedures to insure that all the attempted installs of the ROMS I mentioned go correctly. And its boiling down to either HW issues or a SW issue they created before they shipped it to me, or last but least hopefully a SW fix here, that can get the HW/phone to act right again, and maybe salvage this phone, otherwise I'm thinking I need to buy another brand new phone and hope for the best. I just don't want to be stuck and limited with Froyo stock, for the rest of my time using this phone, I want my freedom to choose again, like I had before, and also It ran so much better than OEM anyways!
Go back to stock using the sticky on the q&a then root using that same methOd and when you flash a custom room make sure you wipe dalvik and cache and delete user data

If you had picked up on it in my post, have already done this dozens of times!! Oh and BTW, when at JFD = 2.1 Eclair, it wont allow the 2 drives access to in Cabled USB mass storage, and therefore unable to CWM flash with zips, then I must go to 2.2 Froyo next to be able to get past that problem, but again when I go from there to any custom ROM, it fails to boot at the very end, and starts its looping. Again, the 1st phone I had, never ever, behaved like this!! Same phone but, different dates of manufacturing and also this one came from either Samsung or TMO in Plano,TX where that's all, they do is send out phones for replacement, and this one wasn't in a original box, something they worked on, grabbed off the shelf, and sent to me!! Its just a shame that 99% of all the ROMS are in zipped form, instead of TAR files, at least then I could've tried flashing some of them from, Eclair to see if that made a difference, but when they are zipped, you must use CWM recovery to flash, and thus again presents another problem as far as what I'm going thru here!
Got any thing else, Idea wise, that actually hasn't been tried yet, that makes sense??
OK, Ive made some progress, It seems for whatever stupid reason, that unlocking my phone, [jailbreaking] was the culprit of this phones renegade behavior, I simply restored it back to a locked status as a TMO provider, and Wholla, the phones now acting right!! And I have been able to get it to the ROM I wanted and flash a better kernel as well with 0 defects!!! And then I jailbroke it again, and its working flawlessly.
Personally I don't understand why that had a bearing on its behavior, but nun the less it did. And has cause me a few extra wrinkles around my eyes in stress trying to figure this out by myself, especially when all the suggestions and procedures I did was for nothing, until this phone was restored to a locked condition again!!
Go figure Right???? Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!! Anyway I hope mentioning this will prevent someone else in losing their hair or sanity!!
hello i think we have the problem, i also have openline my vibrant to be able to use here in our country.. i have 2.1 eclair, i just want to know what 2.2 ROM did you used coz you've said that it's ok to upgrade it to 2.2, but not other ROM, where did you get it.. can you pm me the link
thanks
getting to be far too familiar a scenario lately....
lately EVERY time i reboot my phone (running ics build 2, 3 and 4, stock kernel) it gets stuck on samsung logo.. somehow my phone will only boot into the frigging cm7 recovery which as im sure youre all aware is rather useless to fix any problems im having in ics and leaves me unable to flash, backup, or restore anything. it's quite frustrating and i have no idea how to fix it but by going back to bml, re-partitioning, then odin ei20 modem, cm7 fixed recovery, then flash back to ics but doin this every reboot it getting very tedious..
ive read about recovery loops, but the fix doesnt work for me as i cant mount the ICS /system partition in cm7 recovery...and ive been all over trying a zillion things to get it to work and havent pulled dmesg or logcat but if someone thinks it would be useful ..i wish i knew why EVERYTHING is great, then BANG, reboot and it's FML city.
i should add this phone is a replacement via insurance and that the entire time ive had it, i've been having this problem to varying degrees of intensity,.sometimes if i rebooted enough the ics boot animation would finally come up and freeze part way through, and in the first week with this phone is seemed fine. the first few times i rebooted and battery pulled until it started but this is the fourth time in two weeks ive found myself going back to repartition from odin and then back to ics.. the phone is only mine for a month,.
if nobody has any ideas ill be getting it replaced tomorrow in store. i have the no fee insurance replacement plan, but i would prefer not to have to use another as it's not under warranty and this would be my second replacement and this mes has to last me until the gnex hits uscc in hopefully april if it ever does because i'd rather switch to vzw than take any of usccs other offerings currently.. if they dont get the gnex it'll be time for me to move on...
anyway please advise.. thanks

Thanks for the response. Sounds like a good guide for newbs but in my case information is redundant. I have no problems with the install, unless recovery switches to cm7 recovery during reboot and cannot manage to boot/flash/nandroid until I Odin stock ei20 with repartition and wipe out every bit of data I had. The posts about howto fix CWM bootloop for cm9 do not seem to work for me, as the post says.. Please reread the OP, ya got me excited thinking there was a solution ;-/ thanks anyway, maybe it will help another user.

have you tried flashing glitch kernel to the phone. imo it sounds like a kernel issue and not so much a phone issue.

The problem started after using ics from alphalulz v1 on around build 3 team hacksung IMMEDIATELY AFTER flashing glitch kernel v14 build 4...I have since kept away from glitch on ics, and the problem remains.
Lately it hasn't been as bad though and it seems by hitting random buttons during boot that it will eventually start but reading tells me glitch v14 build 5 is still recovery bootloop ridden and I haven't seen a word about it in the OP for ANY ics components be it team hacksung roms or glitch kernel, and an issue like this which from reading is seemingly widespread *should* be mentioned.
Any suggestions?
In your op you said e120, what phone are you using. E120 isn't a fascinate build.

Now I know this question, in general, has been asked a lot. I've literally searched and tried the solutions in other threads, but this phone might be beyond help. I just want to know if someone has another solution as to how to revive this phone. I honestly think my situation is different than most....I downloaded and installed Team Hacksung's ICS 4.0.3 Build 6.1 ROM and I was using it just fine for a couple of months. Everything was working the whole time. Today, I am browsing through my local news station's app and my phone freezes on me! I pulled the battery and restarted the phone. It boots up fine and gets to the startup screen with the time and the screen lock. I did notice right away that the digitizer screen was not responding to my touch because I could not slide my lock over to get into my phone. I tried a few more soft resets and still nothing. I did notice, however, that the soft keys at the bottom did respond to my touch and they blinked and provided haptic feedback, so at this point I'm thinking it shouldn't be a problem with my digitizer. So I took the battery out then put the phone into recovery and wiped data, cache and dalvik. Then I rebooted the phone once again and still no response to touch at the home/lock screen. I then proceeded to try to reflash the same ICS ROM all over again and that's where the problem started. I can get into download mode and I've already tried to load stock froyo and stock gingerbread, but nothing works. My phone will not go past the "Samsung" boot-up screen. I've already tried several other forums' threads on how to recover a bricked Fascinate, but no matter what I try to load with Odin, Heimdall or anything else, my phone won't load past the Samsung screen. I can get into Download mode and that's it. My phone will not go into recovery using the 3-finger method. When I run odin I get a success message each time. I've even tried to heimdall the files individually and even tried to reload the stock kernel. The other problem I am running into is a lot of the links on these sites are all broken so I am unable to get the files I need. Has anyone else ever had this problem?
Edit: P.S. When the phone is off and on the charger, the grey battery shows the "loading" circle (whatever you call it) in the middle of it, but never converts to showing the green bars moving up and down indicating the battery is being charged. The loading circle is also frozen and does not spin.

If so, I just did it and it won't go past "Samsung."
Did you do check repartition and use the atlas pit file? That would be key, I believe, in returning you properly to stock.

I used heimdall front end to load DI01 files, I didn't use any commands. Also, I was just referring to "Unbrick your samsung fascinate" threads on other websites. A lot of the links I found were outdated or broken.
yea unfortunately not many guides have working links these days...Mine is about the only one left that is kept up to date. Im very suprised a full odin session did not fix your issues. One thing left to try is to odin a older stock package like DL09
Found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526488
Just tried pushing the DL09 file in odin AND in heimdall and neither worked. I still get stuck on the "Samsung" boot and it goes no further. Can't even get into recovery....
I think I truly have a brick...
kinna long shot
but why not try a different PC and a new or different cable.
believe me a faulty cable did me in, a week back and i was sure at the time that my phone is gone, but then it wasn't as bad as the impression i am getting from your description.
all the best with this , and hoping that something solves this issue.
god bless

I am having a similiar problem now. I was able to odin an older CWM (3.0 blue I got somewhere). From there I mounted usb and loaded ext4_formatter_all.zip. I ran this script and odin'd dh03 and finally got back to stock. That's where I am now.
Hope this helps

I have a blue recovery [3.x, voodoo], here it is if the OP wishes to try it.

05f3e376ca697fd0fb8700dea05254aa cwm4-bml-i500-fascinate.bin
I threw in an extra 4.x cwm for good measure, lol. [I saved these in a folder in case I ever needed them..I was going to delete the folder since I upgraded to THS ICS rom (build 7.1), but I decided not to delete them for some reason]
it seems OP sounds like he knows what he is talking about, but lets start simple.
Have you tried going all the way back to 100% stock?
In droidstlyes FANTASTIC guide
do section 5, perhaps try with out repartition or the atlas....that has worked for me in the past.
I know on my THS ICS 7.1 build i had a "sleep of death" (wouldnt wake up) and i was lazy and did the 3 finger salute and it would ONLY boot into CWM. a battery pop would have been fine but like i said i was lazy. i had to Odin back to stock in order to re-flash everything. [luckily i had a nandroid from a few days earlier]
Good Luck
Edit: I have never seen or heard of a fassy that CAN get into Download mode and not be recovered to 100% functional.
I'm just thinking out loud here, but here are two things to consider. Perhaps the senior members will comment.
1. Have you considered flashing a different bootloader?
2. Is it possible you have a corrupt stock and/or pit file? Have you tried re-downloading them and giving it another go?
OP, can you post the md5sums of the files, along with the filenames that you are using in Odin/Heimdall?
thanks
Well, I ended up getting a droid bionic from a friend, so I will turn this fassy into a project phone. If I can get it to work I will sell it or keep it for backup. Anyway...
I have not tried the older blue recovery yet. I will try that when I get back to my computer. It seems like I've gone beyond anything I've ever had to try with this phone. I read on one thread that if odin did not work, keep trying heimdall over and over until the phone boots up. I must have tried at least 8 times on one run. It still won't go past samsung screen. I can get into download just fine. No matter how many different cwms I try, I can't get into recovery using the three finger method. Im pretty knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff and I didn't flash the wrong rom or kernel or anything like that. I was running smoothly on an ics rom until my phone froze. I did have it overclocked with ns tools, but not at the time the phone froze. I honestly don't think its hardware related, but merely a glitch in the software or a bad kernel that does not want to come out? I have no clue....help me revive this baby lol...

I've tried different pit files from different threads. Even the one from droidstyle's thread. I've also tried different versions of the following stock files from different "known" and trusted sites: DI01, DL09, ED01, EB01, EH03, CM7, CM9 other ICS roms and different kernels that suit each both voodoo and non voodoo. And excuse my newbness on the terms, but what do you mean by flashing a new bootloader?

Bootloaders can be flashed in Odin the same way a ROM can. A bootloader is the rudimentary software that gets the other software up and running. When Glitch's kernel started requiring Gingerbread bootloaders for complete functionality, a lot of us realized that just having GB didn't mean you had GB bootloaders.
http://www.mediafire.com/?fqojvsynkff93hc
Hopefully this link will work. It's certainly worth a try. It doesn't seem like you have much to lose. I'd recommend flashing it the exact same way you do a ROM. There's a bootloader section in Odin, but most people avoid it. Good luck.
this is what i get for oding late at night but i managed to do something very very stupid I odined my phone with a one click package for my captivate

Well, when you say you are not able to get CM7 to install, what exactly is it doing?
Are you getting thrown into a bootloop (caused by CWR mismatch and pretty common)? If so, pull battery and boot into recovery and re-flash CM7 over itself again. No wipe. Then reboot.
You may have to flash a different kernel, like glitch or something like that. But try the above first. Should work for you. Does it still say ATT when you boot up?
Lucky for you, everything is good, but if you want to flash a GB or higher ROM, i would suggest you flash the bootloaders in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117990
After that just flash CM9, and you *should* be good, if not, try flashing it again with wiping data, cache, and dalvik cache. I guarantee that will work.
I ended up having to format both SD cards an retrying install custom rom via aio tool an with luck was able to get cm7 installed then cm10 an i dno't have the ime error everyone else seams to have . I did before this flash the gb bootloader over this cause it was the only thing that managed to remove the at&t splash screen before the kernal.
Lesson I learned....
remember that the vibrant you use aio tool not a premade pack >.<
an ya i do own both phones so this does complicate things now an then <,<
I also have both devices. Set up two different folders on your pc, one marked i897 and the other t959. I also add i897 or t959 to any files that could possibly get mixed up in Odin.
Its peanut butter jelly(bean) time...
Hello all,
I have a question that has not been answered after many hours of searching. Hopefully I'm just dumb, and my buddy's stock firmware and data isn't hosed. I'm trying to get his stock firmware running again so I can back it up safely.
What I've done:
Tried to flash CWM's update.zip via stock recovery (signature verification failed on the three different zip's I could find in the forums and various links)
Used Heimdall to push "cmenard-T959-CWM" zImage (this worked, and I get a different screen at boot)
The phone boots to the point of the T-Mobile splash screen with the annoying shriek sound, but goes to a black screen after. If i touch any of the soft buttons, they light up and remain lit. It'll stay like that for at least 20 minutes.
Is it possible to re-flash the system partition and not the data partitions using ODIN? Is that even feasible? Like I mentioned above, I'd like to get the stock firmware running such that I can make a good backup of it with all the user data intact. I haven't been able to because the CWM+root wouldn't flash.
Any suggestions or insight would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance!
Well as long as you don't format the internal SD, any pictures and videos and things should remain intact.
Here is a similar thread. See if it resembles your issue.

Thanks for the suggestion, Toast. I don't believe the internal SD has been messed with, and I don't plan to mess with it either. The thread you linked is not quite related to my issue, as far as I can tell.
I am able to get into Download Mode, and the Stock Recovery mode as well. However every time I try to flash an 'update.zip' with the Stock Recovery, I get an error about Signature Verification Failure.
After stepping back from it for a day, I think I've gained some clarity. Since all I've done is flash a different Kernel with Heimdall, I'm going to try to flash a stock kernel then see what happens.
Is this phone on stock Froyo or have you got it back to JFD (eclair)?
If Froyo, that's the problem. Using Odin back to Eclair and run update.zip. It won't work from stock Froyo.
*-*- I made some assumptions in my previous post. The shrieking sound. Black screen. Lights stay lit. Sounded like a poltergeist.
Glad you can get in download mode and recovery.
The old 2E vs 3E problem. Nice catch Toast
Give this a whirl: recovery 3e modified to work like recovery 2e
Might have to ABD push it to your internal SD card though.

hahaha poltergeist!
Wow, so I'm glad I asked. I wouldn't have known about this issue, as I do not have any history with this device.
I know that the ROM is currently 2.2, and the Android System Recovery is showing "3e".
If I understand correctly, once I'm ready to flash up to ICS, I'll need to ODIN back to 2.1 to get Android System Recovery "2e", which will let me flash 'update.zip' packages freely. Then I flash an 'update.zip' to get CWM, then flash CM7, then CM9 (and CM9 is my intended destination).
The things mentioned in the thread you linked do appear to apply to my situation.
However I still want to get the stock OS booted and working, then do a Nandroid backup of it. (it's the computer tech/security pro in me. Since I'm new to this device, I -tried- to read up on everything first, and didn't want to make a change without being sure it would work.)
Does anyone happen to know if flashing a stock kernel over the 'cmenard' kernel will harm anything, and hopefully get a successful boot? Again, I'm trying to get the stock ROM booting again in order to verify I have everything I need off of it, then do a nandroid backup. Flashing to CM9 will come afterwards.
Ok, here are some things for you.
Here is a kernel pack that you can use. Read the OP because there are Froyo AND Gingerbread kernels in there.
[KERNELS] Moped_Ryder SGS Kernel Pack v2 [20+ Froyo/GB Kernels]
I really suggest using something like BaliX 1.2 or BaliUV kernels to make your back up. They are smooth, fast and OC/UV-able. To flash just Wipe /cache, /dalvik -> flash kernel -> Wipe /cache, /dalvik (I also fix permissions too bc that is the way that I learned and I just do it that way all the time). Reboot and Bam!! you should be able to get to the point that you can make a backup.
Look in my signature, there are downloads and flashables that are direct download linked. There is also an ICS install guide that can help your journey. Once you have your backup, then use Odin from the Toolbox in my signature and flash back to stock JFD. From there you will be able to follow my guide.
If you need any files, just let me know and I will upload them when I get home (won't be until late though, i have plans right after work).
Using HB, can I choose any theme? I am not so acquainted with the Theme chooser and boot animation of my phone. I flashed a boot animation zip yesterday and it was stuck in "ANDROID" screen. So I have to flash again. I never used any boot animation and themes in my phone yet. I want to know about them.

Wrong thread. Put that question in the Jelly Bean Banter thread. No need to hijack this thread until we get OP up and running.
Ugh, so I've been on vacation for a while, and since being back I've been super freaking busy =(
Finally spent some time with the phone tonight. Took some fiddling to get the right drivers working for the phone on my Win7x64 laptop.
In any case, I checked out that Kernel thread, and extracted the Bali kernel. Since I had flashed successfully(?) with Heimdall at first, and I'm becoming more familiar with it, I used it to flash the Bali_1.8.8-zImage. That appeared to work, as I get a new boot screen/animation with the Bali logo.
However, after the Bali logo disappears, the T-Mobile animation+sound plays, and then gives me a black screen. The screen is on (backlight is on) but all black. Also, if I touch a soft-button, they'll light up and the phone will remain in that state for as long as I can stand to wait. (one episode of Archer)
So, it's doing the same thing as before, but with a new boot logo/animation.
I wonder if something else in the ROM has been messed up? Should I forget trying to save it, and just use ODIN to flash a whole new rom/kernel package? I'll talk to the owner tomorrow and see if he's now willing to do that.
I also wonder if I was wrong to use Heimdall again, instead of using the CWM method. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think those two methods end up doing the exact same thing. Is one method more reliable than the other?
Bah, this sucks; I have more questions than answers at this point =( Any ideas, Woodrube, Toast?

Wrong they are not the same. cwm can do the work without a PC beside you can erase, back up , restore and flash, which make our life easier, heimdall or Odin ," I prefer odin "are the last option when you can't fix it with cwm
To fix your phone use Odin or heimdall and go back to stock don't worry all your files, photo, music, will be safe. Then
1 get root on you , if you don't how ask
2 get cWm
3 do a nandroid back up
4 have fun flashing all roms you want lol

Yeah, I would just Odin back to stock JFD w/ repartition checked...
Then I'd flash something real stable for him. There are lots of stable ROMs to choose from. I used Bionix V for a long time before moving onto Jelly Bean.
Since the phone belongs to someone else, I'd stick with something lower than JB though. 911 can have/has issues.
