So I wanted to see peoples reaction to porting android to a Xbox or wii ? I have been contemplating putting some time and money into porting a rom for the wii I think it would be really crazy! I managed to get the android live disc running on my modded Xbox but no controls yet. Would anyone be interested in a rom for the wii if I get it working? Let me now!

The Wii would be helped by the fact that it has a massive Linux porting community. Check out Whiite Linux. Sadly, they barely have X Window running on most implementations.
On that matter, most of the android functionality is already there, it's a matter of looking pretty. Short Of Angry Birds, they've beat you to it in a lot of ways. They've got apps and even an appstore called the Homebrew Browser. Everything is very slow, but what can you expect from it? Yes, most of the good stuff is running by putting Devkit Pro on top of a weak linux, so some improvement could be had. It's not android, but it does the same things.
So far as the 360 goes, if you could put an indie game out with an intentional bug that lets you run Androidx86 off a thumb drive, you could use the Kinect to emulate touch screen. USB keyboard is available to fill in the rest.

It'd be great, but considering that the Wii is running on 2001 State Of The Art, I doubt it will be able to handle much without the official devkit (Which is illegal unless you are a major label dev). Also, everything has to be put into a binary to load, so even Whiite is being done a convoluted way. I have a bit of knowledge of running homebrew on Wii, so I can get you any info or testing you need.
Start with Froyo. Honeycomb won't happen. Maybe Ice Cream Sandwich, but not Honeycomb, for this type of project, you'll NEED kernel source.

Found A Way
Okay, so i was doing some searching and i found something called android-x86
(wwwDOTandroid-x86DOTorg) and they have full source code for a x86/PPC version of android, gingerbread currently. which is good because of the wii which has a PPC prossesor. If you do some editing im sure someone can make android for wii.
I'd be willing to test either system android TV would be cool if we could figure that out .. wii or 360 would be excellent to have android os on it I'm thinking wii would be easy for everyone to use since its so easy to mod and the hbc delivers downloads for everyone

I hate to be cynical here, but the Wii only has 88mb of ram. I dont know if thats enough to run Android. Not to mention that Android was written for the ARM platform and the Wii is PPC.
I would be happy to see android ruining on the xbox 360. Its got to be under of the best ideas I have heard yet.

Shouldn't be too difficult for one of the devs to work on in free time now that Motorola released the source code for Webtop with instructions on how to compile from scratch.

The problem is that most the stuff in the Linux repository are compiled for x86 architecture. Even if we have a full blown linux setup, you won't be able to use all your favorite linux software.

I am from the Bionic section but figuring that all the webtop hacks work between our phone, your phone and the Atrix, I setup a irc channel at #moto-webtop on freenode in hopes that we can pool our hacks together in one place for faster development.

Almost all apps also have the ability to install from source. Yes, that's slow on an ARM device but it beats not having the app at all. Ubuntu is also putting a lot of effort into ARM lately as it is looking like ARM is going to replace x86 in the mobile space entirely.

(I always thought that Motorola was duping up and that Atrix had nothing to do with the Photon, as looks are the same nearly, but just a dupe. WRONG on that one.)

its ported to a few tegra2 devices, i played with the idea but didnt have time lately, would have to see if we could use the source code of the moto/cm7 kernel to start off or if it needs a newer kernel. it would however be great to have meego on it (just played with the n9 today and omg the interface is so smooth and lagless - havent seen a phone performing as good ever). you can check a bit here http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/TEGRA2

Well mer/plasma is its fully open source derivative. A guy has put it on tegra 2 tablets ages ago, tsdtest and I tried to get something to boot on the atrix but with no debugging possible on kernel level before boot we gave up...
yeah, we did a bit of experimenting a while back but never got it to boot. If anyone wants to give it a shot again please stop by the irc channel sometime (#moto-atrix on freenode) i'd love to give some help if i can, and i'm sure crnkoj would be happy to as well.
Also, the guys on #mer were helpful at the time.
The help of a kernel expert would also be very welcome.

An android desktop would be slower than a version like linux or windows and android just doesn't have the software of any desktop os so would be a poor choice to use as one.
For example say you want to convert a video or add subtitles to it, make a rom or do some developing etc. Bit hard on what is meant to be a mobile os. Next android version could change that but not anytime soon.

The Linux 3.3 kernel is bringing in Android features. There is also the Ubuntu for Android project going on. I imagine if Android stays popular that someday you'll be able to easily run Android apps right in Linux. This would help out Linux as it would get some popular apps out there like Neflix and may make it more appealing to people.
At this point, an Android desktop ui wouldn't be of use to anyone, really. As stated before Android doesn't have any desktop applications, and it would likely be a few hundred mb's to get a fairly usable set of apps. Why go through the trouble, when you can just use a launcher like kde plasma?

No. Plasma is not basically a Read Only Image (ROM) of a system.
Plasma is the desktop shell of the K Desktop Environment (KDE).
Your android device is more of an actual Linux system than various systems you can run KDE on, as KDE is in not limited to systems running on top of a Linux kernel.

I don't know the ins and outs... Sorry.I'm still rather new to Linux, just installed Ubuntu via wubi on my laptop.... Anyways, I just meant it more like "kde is the front end of the whole shebang, just like a ROM is" I guess I probably should've said launcher...

I'm eagerly awaiting an android desktop environment. I've been using osx for a decade, and I'm getting a little sick of it. Windows is on my gaming machine, and always will be. Plus I can use that machine for heavy CPU stuff like video conversion. But I would love to switch to a smooth Androud environment for every-day use (web browsing, facebook, email, IM, etc).
In the same vein, my friend's daughter corrupted her netbook with viruses within about 2 weeks of getting it, despite anti-virus protection, etc. I offered to install Linux (Newborn) for her to try, which she did, and loved it. Now her only complaint is that she can't download cool apps like she can on her Android. That's another perfect Android scenario. Unfortunately Android x86 isn't compatible with half the hardware on the device (yet). But hopefully someday...
First of all. I'm not a developer. I consider myself a power user.
With that said. I do love the idea of try Ubuntu OS on my SGS3. And when Canonical announced that they are bringing their Ubuntu to mobile phones, I became very excited.
My question is this. How many developers and power users are interested in getting their hands on Ubuntu OS to try to get it working on the devices they own? As an individual, I have no power to go to Canonical and tell them that I am interested in Ubuntu OS for mobile phones. However if we, as the XDA family of users and developers, among the biggest of hobby developers out there, and probably one of the biggest Beta testers you could find, connected with Canonical, there is a possibility that we could get their attention.
I for one would love to see an image for the S3. As a dual boot or just plain Ubuntu on the phone.
So here is my proposal. I would like to create a petition for XDA to contact Canonical on behalf of the members of the XDA forums, to offer our services to Canonical as Beta testers and to make Ubuntu compatible with our devices that we have in our possession. Android is great, but we still don't have the full power of our devices the way we are individuals are yearning for. Ubuntu to me is representing that freedom.
Your comments and thoughts are appreciative.

Well from what I have read Galaxy Nexus users will be able to install Ubuntu for Android on their device in the coming weeks, and with Ubuntus schedule I am guessing late February. Once the installer is out it will only be a matter of time before there are unofficial images for the SGS3 etc.
One thing I am looking forward to exploring is the porting of Android APKs to the Ububtu software.

Anyone going through the same thoughts?

I would say do it.....i did it a few years a go.....en will never turn back to windows.....the nice thing off ubuntu is ypu easly make a dualboot with windows on your pc...so yoi dont have to give op windows directly....after a while youl see that ubuntu is faster saver and very easy to use....and you start to use windows more less.....then you can decided if you completly delete lacky windows from your pc......with introducing ubuntu phone you will get a complete new experience...because you can use the apps on your phone aswell on you pc...and thats awesome.....

I think the longest period ive ever used Ubuntu after installing it was for a month after which i started getting frustrated due to the unavailability of certain programs that i used..not sure what release it was but it was at around the same time the iPhone 3G was released. I could get iTunes to work on it but it had to run through Wine and even then i had issues with the itunes recognizing the phone. Honestly, i felt like i had to go through 10 different steps to perform a simple task whereas on the windows it was as easy as installing and just running the program..quick and very convenient. But im sure those issues have long been tackled so ill still give it another try..i hope this time it would be worth it. Thanks for the input.

And I don't know, but if it's a native OS it would work a few times more quickly that Android which is using a dalvik emulator. So it seems to be a great experience.

Not that I think it will make much a difference, but I did sign your petition. Source will be out soon and our guys over here will be all over it. I miss Ubuntu dearly, my companies software will only run from windows and worse yet internet explorer, so I cant wait for a couple of our awesome devs. to take a crack at this.
Hopefully Ubuntu for phones will make an even bigger hit than android and get more Americans running Ubuntu. Then maybe big corporations and companies will stop forcing its employees to use Micro$oft products.

The trick with ubuntu is you dont want to learn how to use windows apps in ubuntu....but how to learn working with de apps those are provided in ubuntu....almost for 98% of the windows apps is a ubuntu alternative...learn to work with them and u dont need windows...
