So I've read that the only thing that is not working for 2.2 (and maybe above) custom roms camera is the Zoom function? But I could still take great pictures and vids, but without the zoom, correct??
I just need clarification thanks
Ive tried most, if not all of the major 2.2 roms. The camera was the selling point for the phone so why hinder it? That being said I really need to keep the function, so I was picky about it and even uninstalled a few roms that I otherwise loved because of the audio/video sync problems. Ive found that wolfbreaks rom, and pzafroyo (my current fave) have little to no probs with the camcorder sound, where as most others have bad lag and/or low sound playback. The picture IMO look the best with wolfbreaks, I actually like it better than the stock 2.1 camera, I impressed my brother who has an iphone 4. There seems to be a fair amount of picture settings for all of the 2.2 stuff, aside from zoom which I can live w/o. The MIUI camera takes nice pics but it seemed like the menu is laggy and touch wasnt being picked up easily.
Yeah, I can live without the zoom. I don't use it at all.

Be careful...I installed a couple 2.2 ROMs and i had troubles with the camcorder as well. You can get around zoom for pictures with Vignette which is a good camera app for 3$ in the market, but my videos were either lagging or freezing.
I went back to a 2.1 ROM until the camera is 100%
Some people had better luck than me...so you may be one of the lucky ones.
Just make a backup of a 2.1 ROM and then setup whatever 2.2 you want and if the camera isn't good enough then whenever you need it you can restore the 2.1 and switch back when your done with it.

camera is not fully working in any 2.2 ROM due to some underlying issues regarding the APL level changes from 2.1 to 2.2
I am hoping that we get back the zoom in 2.3.3 upgrade by SE and i hope that it happens soon.
then on that ROM people can bet lots and lots of stuff.

Hi everyone,
I must point out that I am pretty new to the whole custom ROM thing, I still have the stock ROM and everything on my xperia x10,
so my question is which ROM gives the best performance (ie less lag, good battery life, not many bugs, etc)? and can you give me simple instructions on how to install it because I don't want to screw something up and brick my phone, please?
Also when having a custom ROM installed, are you able to implement (install) patches given out by sony ericsson or you just follow the forum and wait for the developer of the ROM to make a patch, and if there's a patch from the developer how do you install it? (I presume you can't install the patches from sony ericsson, I'm just asking). And how often does the developer release the patches?
And do I have to delete everything with a factory reset from my phone before I do ANYTHING? at which step should it be done? can I backup everything using backup and restore program that's already aboard the x10 and restore it later, or the program will disappear when I install a custom ROM? if it wont, will it bring back my sms and mms effectively, and applications too?
Try this, Wolfbreak's CM 6.1.3 V54(fully working, very stable froyo 2.2 rom with CyanogenMod settings and themes.

use wolfbreak's latest rom. it's very stable with lots of things you can tweak and have fun with!

+1 for wolfbreak's
Hi there, as you can see from my post count, I'm pretty new to this as well. I've only tried wolfbreak so far but am amazed at it's stability. As far as I've seen you will lose SMS etc however lots of things can be saved to the cloud, so first thing I'd do is make sure all contacts are marked as Google sync
I initially found the flashing to be problematic, but that was mostly because I was an idiot and failed to notice that the flashing software also adds functions such root access and xrecovery when the phone is NOT in flash mode. Since. Then I've been able to upgrade to the latest version (06) without even using a computer. Simply downloading the file onto my phone, moving it with the included file manager and rebooting to the recovery menu
I know have a faster more responsive phone with lots of added features such as Flash, Voice Search and loads more customization options. IMHO well worth the twenty minutes or so it will initially take
Make a note of your favourite apps as well, as the market only remembers paid for apps not your free ones, but for me the change over was pretty seamless and after only a day and a half with it am more than happy. So much stuff is held within the cloud that setting back up isn't the mega ballache it seems before doing it
Wolfbreak's ROM is the most 'fun' to use, the most tweaks avaliable
TripnMIUI's ROM is one you need if you just want your phone to work. Also, it has an iphone-like look (IMO I hate it, but some people like it)
Jereplea's Gingerbread mod is for those who want to be active in making the ROM better and test Gingerbread and custom kernels. It's not really that stable, but it's getting better by the day and it's the most updated ROM.
IMO those are the 3 big ROMS, there are smaller ones and you're free to check them out, they're pretty good too, but those are just my opinions on the top 3 ROMS.

another +1 for tripnmiui's rom, pretty well featured
for me TripNMiui is always the best
TripNMiui with custum kernel
I'd say Wolfbreak's so far...
It runs flawlessly...
I've been testing many custom ROMs for a while, and up to now, the ones I liked the most are TripNMiUI's and Wolfbreak's ones. It's hard even to pick up one of them... TripNMiUI's has a great visual and is very clean. Wolfbreak's, in the other hand, works flawlessly and very stable, and I love that ARC's style.
Actually, I'm using Wolfbreak's now.

Or use the app Titanium Backup to restore all apps and data when switching. Works like a charm for me.
Hii all.
Im havig optimus one running cm7 BETA 6.3
i loved its stock froyo camera app..
and when i updated it to gingerbread using cm7 i got a new camera which is a bit laggy with very less options.....
and i even restore the nand and took the camera app form the system file including its .odex
and i tried to install it in cm7 but it says application not installed....
Does dis happened because its a froyo app and will run only on froyo.??
or is there any way i can crack through.???
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanxx in advance...
Yes, actually you answered yourself: it's not working because it's a Froyo application. So you will have to use 3rd party solutions which may not be the best, but still better than no camera at all, at least until LG comes up with its own version of Gingerbread and applications made for it.
Try lgcamera from the market
Then i think i gotta wait for lg official gingerbread update......
that's the only option left....
what about the 3 party way.???
is it risky.???
and how can i do it.????
same problem here, i like CM7 rom but hate camera in it, i like Froyo Camera and tired alot to install it on CM7
any solution!

Hello guys. First of all, sorry if I created this thread in a wrong section. I´m still kind of newbie here .
I´m having FC when using "infinity focus" on Camera 360 and Vignette. I tried to manually fix permitions on xrecovery but it didn´t work for me.
My ROM is Wolfbreak 3.5 clean (no themes or any mods).
Any suggestions?
Thank you!
like why u using camera 360 and vignette u can try using only either one of em and see if it works???\
Thank me if it helps !!!

I use both because each one has its individual features =).
I tried to apply your solution but it didn´t work. =(
similar problem here, vignette hangs and fails to initialize. then even the stock camera dosent work ok
after a reboot however, the stock camera comes back to life but when i try opening vignette, same problem all over.
same here guys.. any fix?
wipe data with titanium backup then reboot.
Did the trick for me, then leave it on auto, don't manually select infinity and it will be fine

Thank you scooby, actually it works when using auto focus. But since it´s a lack of functionality, I would like to report it, I just can´t do it right now at Wolfbreak´s official thread because I don´t have enough posts yet
Other impression I got, the background process after taking a shot at higher resolutions seems to be slower (specially on Vignette). Anyone felt this too?
This is not related to Wolfbreaks ROM. I have exactly the same problem with Vignette on the stock 2.3.3 firmware.

Steinrk thank you for your reply. I don´t remember testing it on the stock firmware. This is interesting. Which problem exactly do you refer? The slow post-processing on higher resolution or the FC when using infinity focus?
is anyone also using the battery circle mod ? i didnt flash the apk and that has resolved the problem for me now. both the stock and vignette work perfectly including sony panorama app
WB-XPERIA TW Gingerbread V3.9.0 is the last version, go for it, i haven't seen any error like that anymore.
BTW the original camera app is working better than Vignette, not sure why, but i gave up on using Vignette for now.
Helo,
recnetly i have checked few roms and used for some time with stock kernel. I have tried Ginger DX, minicm7 v21. And here what conclution i came to:
Best rom is....stock one 2.1, no matter what features other roms do have still 2.1 is the best.
Why ? here is a lilttle overview what i think minicm7 and most of custom roms have better essential stuff than stock.
Advantages:
New android market
Battery life
New android version 2.3x
Flash Support
Better sound quality on video camera
Disadvantages:
Bad performance
roaming doesnt work properly (in some countries it connects to network in some it does not)
native thetering doesnt work
user interface just looks awful compared to original stock
Photo camera application (picture quality is just bad compared to stock)
Opera browser doesnt work stable
So i just pointed the things whom i think are really essential for a good rom.
Now a little notice about performance...
Dont be fools, do not believe that 2.3 has better performance than Stock.
IT DOES NOT
Only Quadrant scores are higher, but in practise performance is worse!
with same launcher pro and even less icons and widgets on minicm7 the performance is way worse than stock rom. For example if i want to give a call and open contacts i have to wait for a second at least to load contacts application, same with messages unless i kill all the tasks. I dont have this with stock rom. Another notice, if i use lets say Opera browser or Gameboid emulator and then go back to dekstop, widgets and icons always has to be re-drew per new. This doesnt happen on stock. Overal even with killed apps games on 2.3 are running worse then on stock 2.1 (Where is my water? Angry Birds, Gameboid, Snesoid).
So is it really worth to upgrade? I think no it is not worth to upgrade. Unless you die-hard need Flash Support and Video Camera sound. Then yes. For the rest, no i dont think so.

bad performance - sorry but i do tweaks so mine is better than stock
roaming - dont need it
tethering - is there a native tether with stock?
awful interface - maybe but stock is well stock cant be changed
opera browser - mines doing great
I use MiniCM7 Pro V21 (By god Paul) on my phone and I'm just happy, stock user interface is so ugly compared to MiniCM7.
Only think I dont like is the Camera freezes sometimes while recording a video.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe....... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion....... I watched C-beams glitter in the darkness at Tannhäuser Gate....... All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain...... Time to die......

Sorry, it's only a joke, all opinions are wellcome and very respectables but, after I read your post, this scene of Blade Runner return to my memory.

I think Stock is best rom... No bugs + good performance(i dont think in games )

Maybe, but on stock rom I can't connect via adhoc connection. I share internet connectio via notebook. And on stock rom it is imposible to connect on that type of wifi connection.
Also, I need ultra brightness, what is also weak point for stock rom.
Sent from my U20i using xda premium
Yeah stock dont have usb and wifi tethering but in market u can find aps like EastTether or WifiTether.
And stock have best launcher for this device but I think this launhcer needs modification.I dont like this fact Only 1 widget at screen and no icons at screen.
Only corners

I respect your opinion but I don't agree. Stock from is full of touch bugs, lacks dual touch, native tethering( works now with latest custom gb and ics nAa roms) . Also, we cannot remove some of the bloatware as it is attached to some .apk bundle and we could end in boot loop or even constant force close messages. I forgot to mention that /system has 20 mb only free so laggs are guaranteed... no apps to fat32 option. I tried many times to undervolt my stock roms with apps and .ko files etc. but didn't make it... stock battery life sucks.... gaming experience is cr4p.... I can't remember anything else cause I am on custom built roms many months now.... every opinion is well accepted.

Custom > Stock.
Only if you understand well how the phone works and how to set the phone's settings and features to it's minimum or maximum performance. And also, if you managed to tweak the phone to it's best performance.
Else, Stock is the best and only option for you.
Also @ OP, those disadvantages you pointed out, on the latest stable custom ROMS out there, all of it works fine now. Except ICS, still has work to be done with that version.

Stock is nice but i think the custom rom's have more advantages that cover its disadvantages.
As for me the only disadvantage in custom rom's would be the hopeless battery life.

not really i believe you can use governors in custom roms but not in stock rom. thats why i have custom rom so i can use governors and apps to sd
Prefer custom
I've been using custom Roms for a very long time, now.
I must say that, even though custom roms have some bugs, stock rom has some bugs also. And it lacks some features, which I consider essential.
The most important is the ability of saving apps in SD card. I know (and I've used it) there's link2SD, but I needed to root my device as well. Link2SD was very unstable.
Stock lacks flash and some apps won't run under 2.1.
Battery life? The same.
Stock apps? Great looks, I'll give them that. But some are very basic.
I needed to install some apps that come with custom roms. I prefer to install custom rom.
The main app, to me, is phone/contacts. Stock app is lame.
Will stick to cm7-2.2.0, for now.
Sorry to disagree in every point. I have a x10 mini (not pro).
I couldn't find a single advantage on the stock rom over the custom miniCM7 (2.2.1).
The stock 2.1 rom feels like a slower CPU and GPU, it's sluggish and lags to the touch. I think the interface is OK, with the corner shortcuts and the bigger icons. It was well designed, but I always end up unintentionally arrainging icons in the menus and the corner shortcuts because of the lag. Applications are painfully slow, including the dialer. As a windows computer: when I fresh install (factory reset) the mini, it's fairly responsive, but as soon as I install half a dozen apps it gets sluggish again.
Bad performance?
-no, much better responsiveness and performance with miniCM7 even with lots of apps installed.
roaming doesnt work properly (in some countries it connects to network in some it does not)
-This one I can't tell
native thetering doesnt work
-stock has none.
user interface just looks awful compared to original stock
-matter of taste maybe. I like the new UI better all the way.
Photo camera application (picture quality is just bad compared to stock)
-Maybe in older versions? this one works better, and now I can have instagram.
Opera browser doesnt work stable
-It works fine here.
I am a little dazzled because, in my x10 mini, things are about opposite. Everything is just smoother with the new rom, and the old rom fails me exactly in the way the new rom fails to you: it's unresponsive, slow, annoying, glitchy. Maybe it's just personal taste, or something is different between our phones.
Hey guys, I'm going back to the Photon as my daily for awhile and the one thing I remember being a PITA was the camera. Has anyone learned of any flashable .zips or apps that work particularly well for our phone in terms of speed and quality.

Procapture or camera360 for taking pictures. PerfectlyClear for post processing.
Camera360 getsmy vote. There is no good camcorder app for our cm9/10 builds.

Run CM7. If your Photon is only going to be your daily phone for a while, use CM7. Camera and camcorder work fine there. If you use Holo Launcher (free version is fine) you can even recreate most of the 4.x look. You miss out on the persistent Search on the home screens, Google Now, and the spell checker. Oh, and the fancy settings. CM7 is a very mature ROM and it shows.
Not taking anything away from our CM9/CM10 devs, as they do good work, but if you need a camera (especially video), CM7 is what you want. You can always make a Nandroid backup of your CM9 or CM10 setup, set up CM7 how you want, Nandroid that, and go back and forth.

Yeah, my old lady had this phone for awhile and she updated it 2.5.5 (?) so I suppose it cannot be unlocked for the time being. CM7 sounds really good, but my only other issue is - I have great WiMax coverage. I'll give Camera 360 a spin for now and see what becomes of it. Thanks to everyone who replied.
