The only thing holding me back from a gingerbread rom is that none of them have gps working yet. I was curious how accurately and quickly google maps could pinpoint your position using only the mobile network option checked in settings?

It finds me on the mobile network around 2100 meters. That's not to bad especially if your lost or something. I'm sure we'll have it soon, I saw in another forum that the source code for the sgs2 is out so I'm sure that's a good thing.

Different gps chips...won't help until we get a vibrant gingerbread leak or official release...and yes network location will always work with gingerbread. Fine location will not until gps drivers become available.

I have a rooted vibrant running stock Tom with the j16 update and my 3g works intermittently at best. Is there any fix I can do myself?? Its understandable if I were in a cave but I'm getting full bars and my signal strength is -89 dbm 12 Asus. Please please anyone. I'm almost to the point where I'm about to call T-Mobile and see if they can switch me out a different phone. I hate the idea of paying for the web and nit being able to use it. BTW, if I pull my battery off and restart the data connection will work for about 10 mibs

I'm interested to see the answer/suggestions as well, I've been having the same issue.
It will work then not, a restart or going into flight mode and back will get it working for awhile. It does it over Wi-Fi too..(Sound familiar?)........... It's done it stock, rooted with OCLF, with ji6 and now even with Bionix 1.9
Yeah I mean my wifi works all the time but now even when I do the airplane mode it doesn't bring back my 3g data connection. Its driving me bat **** tho. How about u?

How good it the 3G coverage in your area?
Try a market app called Map Viewer. At home I'm out of 3G coverage.
OK I will try to download it and let you know

Do a factory data reset.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
well I found out from the map that my 3g coverage system work is supposedly non existence. Go figure. So I'm basically getting snippets of it. If I do a factory reset I will lose all my info right? And when you say reset do u mean using Odin and flashing stock 2.1?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Do it from the phone settings, privacy. Yes, u will loose all yr apps, but save them using appsaver from android market first. Your new rom update will still be there. Hope this helps. Thats what I did to correct my 3g issue, just like what you described.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
thank u I will try that

just throwing this idea out there. tmobile could be doing tower work in your area. i experienced this for awhile where data was just iffy and wasnt very reliable. this may happen on and off for a few days.
Finally got my external oncourse bt-339 to work using bluetooth gps however I guess I need a Wifi connection to run Google nav. Are there other good mapping software that doesn't need Wifi to route you?

Co-Pilot:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alk.copilot.market.usa&feature=search_result
It's a paid app, but very reasonable ($5.00 for USA only maps). Other countries/regions also available.
I'm sure there are others, but this one is my fav.
You could also explore tethering your Tab to your phone if possible. Depending on your phone, WiFi and/or BlueTooth tethering may be a possibility.
I can tether using my DROID2 but I have read that version maybe searching for customers using tethering.

Yea, I have a DX and I've been reading all of the drama regarding that.
If you have not upgraded to Gingerbread yet you should be fine.
I've had some issues getting Tethering to work on my DX (and I am on the Gingerbread leak). I haven't spent a lot of time on it yet, as I was waiting for all the drama to shake out.
Ever since I've had my Atrix, the wifi randomly switches off. My question is: should I exchange my Atrix, or is there a way to fix this?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
I am on the ATT network with no modifications done to my Atrix.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Have you got any power saving stuff enabled?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Unless it was enabled by default; no.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
I think the Atrix's WiFi radio is just weak. My mom's iPhone gets 3 bars of WiFi across the house from my router, but my Atrix drops to two bars if I just go into the next room. My Atrix struggles to hold one bar across the house. It sucks, but then again, I am using the crappy router that comes with U-Verse.
I exchanged some PMs with a moto dev about this a few weeks ago. I have a weak wifi signal at work and it will drop if I start using marketplace or facebook extensively. Part of his/her PM:
The "bars" shown by the UI have pretty big margin of error but RSSI reading less then -80 pretty much puts link at the lowest end of the budget. Also that does not account for interference really because Wifi is simple technology. So if you are at -80 at a workplace that has tons of 2.4 RF you will have disconnects and many retransmissions. This is why using of the market place probably triggers something in IC because you have lots of data and error counters go up a lot.

If you're talking about a weak signal, there is nothing to do for that unless you increase your router's transmit power. If it drops, then go to wifi settings > menu capacitive button > wifi sleep policy > never.
I changed the wifi sleep policy and it still switches off randomly. The wifi will still switch off randomly even if I'm sitting right next to my wifi source.

Bump?

What battery settings are you using? Is it power saver? Set it to performance, if so.
Yeah the wifi still dies
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
For the sake of testing, try disabling all security to see if the wifi connection is ok or not while sitting next to your wireless router. Also, could you let us know what kind of wireless router you are using (make and model#), and the type of securtiy you aare using, e.g. WEP/WPA/WPA2&TKIP, etc?
I have tried on 3 different modems, the current one I'm using is a wireless router WGR614 V9 with wpa security, I tried switching it off and I still had the same problem. The other 2 where in encrypted and still disconnected me. I also have the problem at ATT hotspots.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
that's not good. If you're up for it, reflash with stock and try wifi with nothing installed. If you still get the disconnects then get a replacement.
What does reflashing to stock entail? Is it as easy as ODIN?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
download from moto here. I haven't done it, but it looks more safe/less painful than an SBF flash.
I'm already at the latest version, through all the updates I've always had the same problem. I'm not seeing a stock firmware download.

Throughout the past few months, I have been unable to have a GPS lock or estimate whenever I'm either inside a building or standing still on broad daylight. The only way to get a fix is if I'm driving. I've had this problem on several different ROMs. I've mainly stuck with AOKP, but have tried different modems with the same result. I've also wiped data/cache and SD card several times but to no avail. Others haven't reported this problem so I know it's specific to my phone. For example, if I use Google Now on JellyBean and search for weather, it defaults to Atlanta if I'm not driving around (I live in Puerto Rico)
Now that Jelly Bean is here with Google Now and other apps are constantly taking advantage of your location, I would love to be able to have my GPS fix or give an estimate of my location whenever I'm inside a building or standing still on the street.
Any suggestions?
I'm having the same problem man I turn my GPS on and it won't pin point my location if im driving and turn GPS on it will start to work within maybe a few minutes or so I'm on stock ics rooted with siyah kernel is there any fix maybe for my stock phone its 4.0.3

Some have suggested before to switch modems. Have you had any luck with any particular one ?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app
I had trouble with GPS after flashing CM9 RC2. Have you installed GPS Toolbox? It gives you a bit more information to troubleshoot with.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2&hl=en
I'd see eight satellites but would not get a fix. Eventually I reflashed new nightly *and* modem UCLE5 and trouble disappeared.
Have you tried leaving maps or another app requiring location data on for a few minutes (12 1/2 minutes max)? If you eventually acquire a fix then that would point toward your phone not being able to download GPS Assistance data from cell provider. If the phone cannot get AGPS data from cell provider then it has to recieve GPS almanac from satellites at an ungodly slow rate.

This help me alot give it a try. I did method 2

So you copied the gps.conf file to /etc and that was it? No other tweaks? What ROM are you using? I'm testing this On the Jelly Bean CM10 preview build.

That's REALLY weird.
Not locking inside - that's completely expected
Not locking outside - That's not a good sign, but it makes no sense when combined with
Locking in a moving car - My experience is that every GPS I have ever used has significantly more trouble locking when moving then when stationary
Edit: When you say "standing still in the street" - is it a city with tall buildings, or ???
No tall buildings.
The GPS.conf file posted two posts above helps but doesn't solve it completely.
And its an honor to have you Entropy answering my plea!

Have you tried standing still in an area where you can lock when driving?
Might be area-specific interference... That happened to lots of people near LightSquared's test networks for example.

Or these?

Hi, with recent roms based on the last official sammy firmwares, i get a very slow GPS positioning, and when is locked onto a few satellites, it drops all of them ocasionally and then i have to wait for a lock again.
Before, this never happened to me, i would get a solid lock that would continue to track my location.
i live in south america, is there some way to improve this situation via software? or could it be that my GPS module is getting broken (my s3 has 1 year and a half of use and a extended zerolemon 7000mha battery), which "part" of the OS handles GPS signal? (kernel, baseband, android...).
Greetings [emoji1].
