I have a Viewsonic GTablet. I have used it very little and know nothing about rooting or ROM's or anything. I picked it up one day and turned it on and it's in a loop while booting...it goes from "viewsonic" to "Gtablet" to "TapNTap" then sticks there for several minutes then turns off. I have tried holding down the power and Vol. + and It comes in the upper left hand corner saying "Detect Recovery Key Pressed" and then "Booting recovery Kernal Image". Then the "unpacking box" appears...nothing happens but when I press the "HOME" button it says "Formatting MISC" and then "Rebooting" then the loop again. Called Tech support they laughed and said send it in...not sure about all that but would rather figure something out before doing that...thanks in advance...remember I am a NOVICE...so simple instructions please LOL
You need a data wipe/factory reset. Can be done from stock recovery. I recommend method I from the following thread...

Did that it came up with the first 2 "Detect Recovery Key Pressed" and "Booting Recovery Kernal Image" then to the "upacking box" for about 5 seconds then to the loop again. Still lost...thanks for trying to help any more suggestions?

Look for the links about installing clockworkmod. Once installed you'll need to try the data wipe and possibly repartition your internal storage. That will cause any data stored there to be lost.
tried all of them and the tablet will not recognize the SD card or being connected to the computer
A little more than tried all of them would be helpful...
Did you get CWM installed?
Were you able to wipe data?
Did you partition?
What was the result of each of those actions?
Is the tablet still looping?
Can you still get into recovery?
If not, what exactly is it doing when you turn it on?
No..I put that on the SD card and put the SD card in the tablet. Booted up and it goes through the same cycle. It will not even boot from the SD card. It never brings up a menu to cycle through with the Vol + or -....if I connect it through the USB it never recognizes it because it never comes out of the boot loop.
Thanks for all your help...I am really a novice with this thing
Well... It doesn't boot from the SD Card. Recovery looks at the SD Card to see if there is anything for it to do. Back to basics...
Install ClockworkMod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
The first part of that post describes how to do it. Use the MicroSD card version which you will find at the bottom of the first post. You'll need to download it, extract it and put the recovery folder and update.zip at the root of your MicroSD card using your computer. Then put the MicroSD card in your tablet. Turn the tablet on while holding down the Volume Up key. You should boot into recovery and see the little box, arrow and progress bar. When it finishes you want to reboot it while holding down the Volume Up key again. That will get you into ClockworkMod (CWM).
From CWM main menu you can wipe data. Try that and see if it helps. If not then reboot while holding the Volume Up and go into CWM again. Select "Advanced" menu and you'll find the partitioning command. Select it and answer the two questions with 2048 and 0. This will erase everything stored on your tablet in the user storage space but should fix the problem.
Tried it
Tried it and this time it worked like......clockwork LOL...thanks so much...any more advice to have an awesome butt kicking machine?
Glad to hear it. Hang out around here for a bit and read up on the custom ROMs and stuff. You can turn these tablets into some pretty kick butt machines without too much effort. Just take your time and make sure you understand the process before you get started.

Moving to Q&A
got it working now got an Os splash screen but it works this is how i did it
HOW TO RESTORE YOUR STREAK BACK TO FACTORY CONDITION:
Option 1.
1. Download the stock recovery ROM HERE (http://hotfile.com/dl/61659279/506ac...stock.img.html) and the stock official Dell ROM HERE (http://hotfile.com/dl/61663686/7d7e5...99_21.pkg.html).
2. Rename the stock official Dell ROM 'Update.pkg' and put it in the root directory on your SD card.
3. Boot Streak in fast boot mode (hold camera button when turning on), press 'Fast boot Mode' button, wait 10 seconds then connect to your PC (must have Dell PC suite installed).
4. Open a command prompt, navigate to the folder where your 'fast boot-windows.exe' is stored.
5. Type 'fastboot-windows.exe -i 0x413c flash recovery c:\recovery.stock.img' . Make sure the .img file is in c:\ directory. The program will now update the recovery image on your Streak.
6. Once the phone reads 'Recovery Done', remove the battery and insert it again.
7. Boot Streak in Recovery mode (hold down vol up and vol down when turning on) and select option 2.
5. Wait till it installs and it'll boot into Android....DONE!
Option 2
Place update.pkg on SD card root folder
Power up streak whilst holding both volume buttons
Select option 2 - "software upgrade via Update.pkg on SD card" by pressing camera button
Press camera button again Job done
i think later tonight i'll try to upgrade to 2.2 wish me luck and thanks for all your help EDRILL
i spend a whole night now to get android work on my hd2. had the same error message...
now i know why it didn't work and the solution was dead easy i had to beat myself...
sd card has to be FAT not FAT32
after formatting the card this way, everything works fine ^^
Are you sure it has to be FAT? I have heard there are restrictions on this format that would make it impracticle to use on a 16gb microsd.
Also how you format to fat? my computer only has 2 options to format: Fat32 and exfat.
FAT can only allocate up to 2 gigabytes of storage so there is something dodgy about that explanation.
I'm new to Android, my first step was to research hardware and functionality. The choice, you guest it, gtab!
Now of to the good stuff. I ultimately want to root and update my Rom to vegan5.1. So far I have downloaded cwv08, upload downgrade and vegan. The problem is that when I try to restart using power + volume +, I do see the open box screen but then it just loads tnt and resumes boot. There has to be a step I must be missing here. Like I said I'm new to grab and android. Where do I start?
To my understanding, power with volume + without cwm install will run the command file in recovery folder. Preharps u are missing the file, preharps u are not naming the file correctly; too little details provided to tell..
try reading : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
same box with green arrow
I too have installed clockwork. Downgrade the bootloader then try to reboot into clockwork using the + and power. The tab acts like it is going to enter recovery says "Detect recover key press
Booting to recovery image"
Then it goes to that screen with he box with a green down arrow coming out of it and a progress bar. When it finishes it reboots. Still at stock rom, no joy at all.
A couple things I have tried. Copying a new update.zip to the root of the internal memory and the sd card, reboot with and without the sdcard inserted, rebooting normal then trying to get reboot recovery with + and power, copying the cwm update and recovery folder into root. No joy each time it it is the update box. I have not tried holding the recovery keys down in the dark while chanting xda but I think I missed my chance for that working last Friday.... when is the next Friday the 13th?
Thanks for any help or insight anyone can give us.
Bednab,I could not have explained any better. This is exactly what happens with mine. Today I encountered another challenge. My gtab will not connect to my-fy on open iphone. I have to figure this out before my road trip next month.
and there was much rejoicing
I kept at this and finally found a solution. A post pointed me to the answer on androidforums about the command file getting deleted out of the recovery folder after a successful update. I opened the recovery folter on the g tab and it was empty so I opened the one from cwm and edited it to this:
--update_package=SDCARD2:/update.zip
This way it points to my external card where I had a few custom roms. Copied it to the recovery folder in the root of the gtab, reboot into recovery mode and much joy!
Background info:
The G Tablet came with 1-1-3389 and I performed the OTA update to 1.1-3588 which went fine. I then rooted it with z4root and that went fine too.
1. I then side loaded ROM Manager and was able to install CWM Recovery and then was able to do a backup of my base ROM.
2. I then copied update-cm-7.0.3-Harmony-signed.zip and gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip to the internal storage on my G Tablet.
3. In ROM Manager I chose to install ROM and I selected the gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip and the tablet rebooted and came up in CWM Recovery. I watched it install 7.0.3 and then it rebooted on its own.
4. The tablet now will only come up to the Viewsonic screen with the birds on it and it just sits there.
5. I press the power button and hold it down to power off the tablet. I then press the + side on the volume rocker and press the power button. I get the "Recovery Key Detected" and then get a screen with a box on it with an arrow pointing down and a task bar underneath then it reboots and comes back up to the bird screen and just sits there.
I have read many threads about this but I am not sure just what my problem is exactly. The fact that I am unable to boot into recovery seems to be the biggest issue.
I have downloaded update-smb_a1002-3588-user.zip and update-smb_a1002-3389-user.zip and have went so far as to unzip the 3588 zip and copied its contents to my microSD card and inserted it and have booted it up while holding the + rocker down again...in another post on the subject I thought I should get "Recovery Image detected" due to the fact the microsd has the following on it...
data folder
META-INF folder
boot.img
bootloader.bin
recovery.img
system.img
Or did i totally misunderstand what I read?
Any ideas?
Maybe others can give a more specific answer, but:
If you're willing to completely reset your tablet, you can use nvFlash to get it back to factory condition.
Just Google:
nvFlash "g tablet" roebeet
And follows the steps that roebeet outlines to get your tablet up and running again. It looks rather complicated, because the instructions could be formatted more clearly, but in reality it's a pretty simple process.
Note that doing this WILL erase ANYTHING you have on there.
thanks for the reply....I do not mind losing anything to get it going again
I am back rocking again...thanks!
I have been trying to put CyanogenMod 7 on my Verizon Fascinate.
It was fresh out of the box, unrooted, no fancy widgets or programs installed,
when it suddenly decided to erase my Contacts.
No matter how much I backup through Verizon, the contacts will erase,
NOT backup with Verizon, and even better, not save any contacts.
I had it factory reset couple of times, but the problem kept coming up.
(Maybe there's something wrong with the SD Card??)
Well, so I decided to install CyanogenMod 7.
I first installed SuperOneClick, and rooted my phone that way.
I also installed ROM Manager.
I was in the ClockworkMod Recovery
when I went into "install from SD Card" trying to install CM7.zip,
my phone starts going on a "waiting for SD card to mount" loop.
It will keep going forever and ever,
phone will not turn off unless I take the battery out,
no matter which way I try to turn it back on,
it starts giving me that loop again.
One of my family members have a Verizon fascinate as well,
but without CyanogenMod (is rooted though).
I put the same two files (CM7.zip and gapps.zip) at the root folder,
plug it into my SD Card slot, with no luck..
same "waiting for.." loop.
As I have been searching on this forum for two hours,
everyone seemed to suggest that the SD card was the problem.
But I'm kind of ignorant on this type of subject,
1. I have searched that a smaller GB SD Card is better? True or False..?
1a. Let's say I bought a 2 GB SD Card. What do I do with it?
Put the two files into the SD card and plug it in?
1b. Will I be able to use a bigger sized SD Card later on
after the installation is finished?
2. Is the SD Card the problem or is there a way I can work it out?
P.S. By the way, I followed the steps from the Wiki,
and had a hard time at "Boot into the ClockworkMod Recovery" step.
I didn't know how to boot into it all, and I searched that
pressing the volume down button and the power button does the trick.
My phone didn't.
So I ended up going to ROM Manager
and pressing the "reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery" button.
Pressing that button froze up the phone.
I had to reboot the phone several times because
the phone will freeze every time I pressed that button.
And then on a random reboot,
the phone decided to boot into ClockworkMod Recovery mode.
So if I had to do that again, I have no idea how to do it.
Was there a bug in the program or am I doing it wrong?

Ok first, 99% of your custom roms will already be pre-rooted. 2nd, to boot into recovery, you have to hold volume up,down and power button (also known as 3 button recovery) 3rd, I've never had a problem getting into CM7 HOWEVER, you do need to Odin a special recovery to install it. I'm on the xda app and can't post links but I do know towards the bottom of the cm7 post it does say you need to have the new recovery installed

After hours and hours of frustration,
I decided to call it a day and start fresh the next morning..
and I saw your reply-
Volume Up + Volume Down + Power Button did the trick.
It sent me straight to the recovery mode..
I took another SD card with the two files I want to install at the root folder.
Plugged it in, and it worked!!
So it's safe to assume that the problem was in the SD card,
and not the hardware, or the software, or any mistaken procedures.
Thank you! Saved my day!
No problem, glad I could help man.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.......this is my first post but I have spent ALOT of time reading on here and i dont know where to go from here....I bought my nook Tablet from a friend and it came stock with 4.4.2. KIt Kat and somehow my son got my SD card that had my recovery and back ups on it and well to make a long story short, I went through a few endless boot loops, ROMS, sleepless nights on XDA and just about anything you can imagine untill it hit its 8th consecutive "loop" and here we are......biggest problem is though that I cant get into admin account on my computer sooooo....short of having to find a friends house to drag my kids off to to fix "Mommies toy" I really need some help if at all possible. My computer doesn't read this "new" nook because it was an Android the other day and I know what it feels like.....it was pretty hard having to wake up to a TOTALLY STOCK Nook from a 4.4 with TWRP and Paranoid Android.
Ps....if nothing else if anyone can point me in a real direction to reset my admin password on a HP running Windows 7 that would be great also, I would factory reset it but the settings require the password....its pretty crazy....Thank you in advance
Noob Mom :fingers-crossed
Does your SD card contain the CWM recovery and ROM backup and is still intact?
If so then you should be able to boot off the SD card into recovery (by inserting a powered USB into the NT while it's in power-off state) and and restore from back up.

Please forgive me but tell me exactly where and what I need to look for to make sure, I have a wifi file explorer opened up on my nook because I cant re-install the drivers on my Win7 pc because of the stupid ADMIN password. So can i just add\delete\move....whatever files necessary around to make it work or am i going to have to be able to connect it to my pc?? Also, when you say for me to just restore from back up, how would i do that because i cant seem to be able to boot into anything except Factory "N".
The process for restoring from SD card using SD-based CWM recovery is as follows:
Put the SD card into the NT, and boot from its power off by inserting a powered USB cable. Press and hold the N button as soon as CyanoBoot comes up to get the boot menu to display. Use volume up/down buttons to navigate, N button to select, and Power button to return to a parent menu.
Select "SDC Recovery" to load CWM recovery.
Select "Backup and restore".
Select "Restore from SD card".
...
Select "Reboot".
