[Q] Why can I not boot into recovery? - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Background info:
The G Tablet came with 1-1-3389 and I performed the OTA update to 1.1-3588 which went fine. I then rooted it with z4root and that went fine too.
1. I then side loaded ROM Manager and was able to install CWM Recovery and then was able to do a backup of my base ROM.
2. I then copied update-cm-7.0.3-Harmony-signed.zip and gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip to the internal storage on my G Tablet.
3. In ROM Manager I chose to install ROM and I selected the gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip and the tablet rebooted and came up in CWM Recovery. I watched it install 7.0.3 and then it rebooted on its own.
4. The tablet now will only come up to the Viewsonic screen with the birds on it and it just sits there.
5. I press the power button and hold it down to power off the tablet. I then press the + side on the volume rocker and press the power button. I get the "Recovery Key Detected" and then get a screen with a box on it with an arrow pointing down and a task bar underneath then it reboots and comes back up to the bird screen and just sits there.
I have read many threads about this but I am not sure just what my problem is exactly. The fact that I am unable to boot into recovery seems to be the biggest issue.
I have downloaded update-smb_a1002-3588-user.zip and update-smb_a1002-3389-user.zip and have went so far as to unzip the 3588 zip and copied its contents to my microSD card and inserted it and have booted it up while holding the + rocker down again...in another post on the subject I thought I should get "Recovery Image detected" due to the fact the microsd has the following on it...
data folder
META-INF folder
boot.img
bootloader.bin
recovery.img
system.img
Or did i totally misunderstand what I read?
Any ideas?

Maybe others can give a more specific answer, but:
If you're willing to completely reset your tablet, you can use nvFlash to get it back to factory condition.
Just Google:
nvFlash "g tablet" roebeet
And follows the steps that roebeet outlines to get your tablet up and running again. It looks rather complicated, because the instructions could be formatted more clearly, but in reality it's a pretty simple process.
Note that doing this WILL erase ANYTHING you have on there.

thanks for the reply....I do not mind losing anything to get it going again

I am back rocking again...thanks!

[Q] Really Lost

I have a Viewsonic GTablet. I have used it very little and know nothing about rooting or ROM's or anything. I picked it up one day and turned it on and it's in a loop while booting...it goes from "viewsonic" to "Gtablet" to "TapNTap" then sticks there for several minutes then turns off. I have tried holding down the power and Vol. + and It comes in the upper left hand corner saying "Detect Recovery Key Pressed" and then "Booting recovery Kernal Image". Then the "unpacking box" appears...nothing happens but when I press the "HOME" button it says "Formatting MISC" and then "Rebooting" then the loop again. Called Tech support they laughed and said send it in...not sure about all that but would rather figure something out before doing that...thanks in advance...remember I am a NOVICE...so simple instructions please LOL
You need a data wipe/factory reset. Can be done from stock recovery. I recommend method I from the following thread...

Did that it came up with the first 2 "Detect Recovery Key Pressed" and "Booting Recovery Kernal Image" then to the "upacking box" for about 5 seconds then to the loop again. Still lost...thanks for trying to help any more suggestions?

Look for the links about installing clockworkmod. Once installed you'll need to try the data wipe and possibly repartition your internal storage. That will cause any data stored there to be lost.
tried all of them and the tablet will not recognize the SD card or being connected to the computer
A little more than tried all of them would be helpful...
Did you get CWM installed?
Were you able to wipe data?
Did you partition?
What was the result of each of those actions?
Is the tablet still looping?
Can you still get into recovery?
If not, what exactly is it doing when you turn it on?
No..I put that on the SD card and put the SD card in the tablet. Booted up and it goes through the same cycle. It will not even boot from the SD card. It never brings up a menu to cycle through with the Vol + or -....if I connect it through the USB it never recognizes it because it never comes out of the boot loop.
Thanks for all your help...I am really a novice with this thing
Well... It doesn't boot from the SD Card. Recovery looks at the SD Card to see if there is anything for it to do. Back to basics...
Install ClockworkMod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
The first part of that post describes how to do it. Use the MicroSD card version which you will find at the bottom of the first post. You'll need to download it, extract it and put the recovery folder and update.zip at the root of your MicroSD card using your computer. Then put the MicroSD card in your tablet. Turn the tablet on while holding down the Volume Up key. You should boot into recovery and see the little box, arrow and progress bar. When it finishes you want to reboot it while holding down the Volume Up key again. That will get you into ClockworkMod (CWM).
From CWM main menu you can wipe data. Try that and see if it helps. If not then reboot while holding the Volume Up and go into CWM again. Select "Advanced" menu and you'll find the partitioning command. Select it and answer the two questions with 2048 and 0. This will erase everything stored on your tablet in the user storage space but should fix the problem.
Tried it
Tried it and this time it worked like......clockwork LOL...thanks so much...any more advice to have an awesome butt kicking machine?
Glad to hear it. Hang out around here for a bit and read up on the custom ROMs and stuff. You can turn these tablets into some pretty kick butt machines without too much effort. Just take your time and make sure you understand the process before you get started.

[Q] gtab rooting 101

I'm new to Android, my first step was to research hardware and functionality. The choice, you guest it, gtab!
Now of to the good stuff. I ultimately want to root and update my Rom to vegan5.1. So far I have downloaded cwv08, upload downgrade and vegan. The problem is that when I try to restart using power + volume +, I do see the open box screen but then it just loads tnt and resumes boot. There has to be a step I must be missing here. Like I said I'm new to grab and android. Where do I start?
To my understanding, power with volume + without cwm install will run the command file in recovery folder. Preharps u are missing the file, preharps u are not naming the file correctly; too little details provided to tell..
try reading : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
same box with green arrow
I too have installed clockwork. Downgrade the bootloader then try to reboot into clockwork using the + and power. The tab acts like it is going to enter recovery says "Detect recover key press
Booting to recovery image"
Then it goes to that screen with he box with a green down arrow coming out of it and a progress bar. When it finishes it reboots. Still at stock rom, no joy at all.
A couple things I have tried. Copying a new update.zip to the root of the internal memory and the sd card, reboot with and without the sdcard inserted, rebooting normal then trying to get reboot recovery with + and power, copying the cwm update and recovery folder into root. No joy each time it it is the update box. I have not tried holding the recovery keys down in the dark while chanting xda but I think I missed my chance for that working last Friday.... when is the next Friday the 13th?
Thanks for any help or insight anyone can give us.
Bednab,I could not have explained any better. This is exactly what happens with mine. Today I encountered another challenge. My gtab will not connect to my-fy on open iphone. I have to figure this out before my road trip next month.
and there was much rejoicing
I kept at this and finally found a solution. A post pointed me to the answer on androidforums about the command file getting deleted out of the recovery folder after a successful update. I opened the recovery folter on the g tab and it was empty so I opened the one from cwm and edited it to this:
--update_package=SDCARD2:/update.zip
This way it points to my external card where I had a few custom roms. Copied it to the recovery folder in the root of the gtab, reboot into recovery mode and much joy!

[Q] After NVflash G-Tab only reboots into APX

Figured this was better for a new thread (since a few people in the [Solution] How to recover from a 'bricked' gtab! thread have the same issue, and obviously there isn't a solution yet)
So I screwed up and formatted the SD Card, not realizing that on the G-Tablet the SD Card is actually the internal storage. Needless to say it caused some major issues.
Originally I was stuck in an APX Bootloop. Then I NVflashed, and on initial boot it would show the G-Tab screen, TapNTap screen, then the N screen and then proceed to reboot. It would go through this for 5-10 minutes then just go to a black screen.
With all that said, here are the most recent steps that I've used, and been able to boot up normally ONCE (upon restart it boots into APX):
NVflash 3588 w/ CWM
Boot into CWM (holding the Volume + before beginning NVflash)
Format Boot
Format System
Format Data
Format Cache
Format SD Card
Format SDext
Partion SD Card (2048/0)
Fix Permissions
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Davlik Cache
Reboot
Reboots into APX
NVflash 3588 w/o CWM
Reboots
G-Tablet Screen, then TapNTap screen, then N screen
Boots up the first time fine (into Android OS), but after a restart it only goes into APX.

Is this thing on? Bueller, Bueller?
From reading through some of the other (somewhat unrelated) threads, it seemed like there were a number of people with this same issue. Something is stopping it from re-booting normally. I know there are alot of great minds in the dev section, hoping they can provide some insight on this issue.
Can you get into cwm to repartition the internal SD to 2048 and 0 swap? I think Your SD was formated but not to correct structure for correct boot partitioning.
I ran into a similar issue and from my experience it seems as if each tablet are quite different. If you search through the forums you will see a number of techniques that work for some yet fail for others.
My situation was never fixed and it ended up with me returning my device.
There is some decent information in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038689 however it is spread out through the pages
FIXED IT!!!!!!
Followed the instructions in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12220001&postcount=1
Here is what I did step by step
1. Download the 2 attached files below and the top file here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9837354&postcount=3 (rename that file to update.zip)
2. Copy recovery-stock.img into folder that you are running NVflash from.
3. Run NVflash to start the tab, since that is the only way to boot it with the APX issue.
4. Once booted up, Mount it via USB, and copy the attached update.zip into the tablet internal sdcard.
5. Unzip the attached cwmod-internal.zip and copy the recovery folder (including the command file) to the sdcard.
6. Power off the tab.
7. Power on to make sure you enter APX mode (you will see the black screen, but hear a bing sound)
8. Type in the Dos Command: nvflash --bl bootloader.bin --download 9 recovery-stock.img --go (READ BELOW BEFORE YOU HIT ENTER)
9. Press and hold the Volume + on the Gtablet and press enter on the PC to execute the above line. You will see it starts to installing the original rom..(about 3 minutes)..and then power off autmotically after finishing flashing ! Dont worry.
10. Repeat step 7 and 8, and press enter (do NOT hold volume +!)
11. The tab will start to the TnT like the original one you had, and Magic now: you can turn off and turn on the tab NORMALLY!!
In step 8 I don't know where to type the code in, which Dos command, the dos command window which nvflash step opened( and I didn't press enter to close that window), or I have to open a new one( or make a new .bat file with the code).
I do it and cann't see it install the original rom( "You will see it starts to installing the original rom..(about 3 minutes)..and then power off autmotically after finishing flashingtes" as you wrote in step 9)
So I still cann't fix my problem.
Please help me!
Thank you so much, you are a life saver.
yesterday, i can not do the step 8 because i can't run cwm to wipe all before, so nothing happen after i press enter.
but now, everything is ok.
Thank again!

[Q] Can't get Clockworklmod to work

I installed clockworkmod per instructions.
When I press the on and volume up buttons I get the appropriate message and then the system boots with the tap n tap (ugh) rom.
I never see a clockworkmod menu
What am I doing wrong?
I am having the same issue!!! I am beyond frustrated right now. I have downgraded to 1.1 and had success during one try and from now on trying to boot into Clockwork it won't let me. All it does is say booting from kernal image and then goes to the splash screen then to the box with the down arrow and continues until it goes right back to the viewsonic birds and boots to the normal rom again.
What the He!! am I doing wrong here? I have already done a factory reset with data wipe...

That is exactly what I was watching and following when this happened to me. Any other ideas? I did however just return the other one after clearing the data and got another one so I am going to try and avoid doing that again.. I am going to try and tread slowly here so I can get things right....
I've had 100% success using the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861950
Go to the first link (Dropbox) and, if Windows, download the 2 zipped files. I will say I bought a Viewsonic G tablet back in December and I had to used the older zipped file in the DEPRECATED folder. My latest Viewsonic G tablet works with the latest files.
Unzip the 2 files, combine into one folder, plug in the USB cable, and reboot by holding the POWER button *and* the Vol- button. You should see the initial boot screen but should quickly see a black screen. Run the .bat file (nvflash_gtablet.bat). If the computer doesn't see the tablet, read the above link on how to make sure you've installed the drivers for the tablet. Once the batch file ends, your tablet will automatically reboot. I would suggest powering off the tablet before it reboots as you can install CW_Mod via NVFlash, which is what I do. Grab CW_Mod 1.1 (not 1.2). Unzip the UPDATE.ZIP file and copy RECOVERY.IMG to the folder where you combined the 2 zipped files from Dropbox. Connect your tablet to your PC via the USB cable. Reboot the tablet again by pressing the POWER button while holding the Vol- button. Same thing--i.e. initial boot screen, then a black screen. Either create a batch file or run the following command (sorry cannot remember the thread where I found this, so I take no credit for this):
nvflash.exe --bl bootloader.bin --download 9 recovery.img
This is a quick process. Once the command finishes. Unplug your USB cable from your tablet and hold down the POWER button to turn off your tablet. You can either power it back on or power it back on and check to make sure CW_Mod is installed (recommended). For this, press the POWER button while holding down the Vol+ key until you see the line of text appear in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
Again, on one of my Viewsonic G tablets, I had to use the zipped file contained in the DEPRECATED folder on the Dropbox. I can't remember what the current files did (think soft-brick).
Good luck. As I've said, I've used these steps so many times as I went through every 1.1 ROM and 1.2 ROM trying to find the one I liked and the steps were perfect. At this point, though, while in CW_Mod, I would go through the process of partitioning your system and formatting stuff.

GTab Newbie Downgraded from 1.2 > 1.1 Need help with CWM

I just got this tablet as a early xmas gift yesterday. Coming from the android mobile world. Here's my current problem:
1.I downgraded from 1.2>1.1 Tap UI 3588 sdcard2 is 16g sandisk downgrade successful.
2.I downloaded CWM zip file on to my windows PC unzipped the file copied and pasted both the recovery file with the command line in it and the update.zip folder to Gtablet's internal storage in the sdcard file folder.
3. Powered it down. Then pressed the power button and the vol+ at the same time "recovery key detected" upper left hand corner of the of the viewsonic white screen followed by the "Gtab" logo white screen. Then on the next screen I get to the black screen with the box and the arrow and the progression bar at the bottom and it sits there for approximately 2 secs and reboots back to the viewsonic white screen and it loads up completely until the home screen appears. So i never get to actually access the APX mode. I'm new to this detailed help is needed thanks in advance.....!!!!!!
Its volume- and power for apx
Try Googling Gtab for dummies and learn how to nvflash. Get the file for the 1.2 bootloader with cwm attached and then flash away. I highly recommend trying flashback. Great honeycomb rom.

It sounds like you have successfully flashed ClockworkMod on your v1.1 bootloader TnT gTab using the stock recovery. So now to test if that is true you just need to boot into recovery by holding the volume up button down while you press the power button.
APX mode is for accessing the gTab at the hardware level. It's used by most of us for NVFlashing if the system gets messed up or if you want to push other boot images or the like. You have to have the right drivers and there a few very lengthy and detailed threads here that cover that topic.
