Simple Mobile is 100% compatible with T-mobile phones, they use the exact same frequencies, and I far as i read, they will unlock your phone for you. But with T-mobiles new Pay as you go plans, Simple Mobile doesn't look super appealing now, but when/if the merge goes down, and At&t F's everything up, i can see Simple Mobile getting ALOT of bussiness.

While using simple mobile on this phone can you access youtube?
( i was talking to a S.M. rep and he mentioned that youtube might not work)
Simple mobile uses the same network like Tmobile so can you talk and surf the web at the same time without having to be connected to WIFI?
Also if i connect a T-mobile 4g phone on simple mobile will i still be able to get 4g speeds?

i currently use this on Simple Mobile, and all works perfectly. the only issues i get is occasionally i will get these spans of time where it refuses to download MMS (SMS still perfect tho) but that's not really a anti-selling point

yes. u do get some videos that wont play on mobile device, but that's youtube's fault
yes u can, that's all GSM (SIM card) smartphones i believe

[Q] Simple Mobile MMS

Anyone using Simple Mobile for Vibrant, do your MMS work? If so could you tell me which rom your using and APN Settings.
Mines just says download and hangs there and never downloads.

My MMS works, but sometimes i can and sometimes i cant download, its happened on all my Vibrants.

How does Simple Mobile coverage compares to T-mobile? I believe Simple Mobile users can't benefit from roaming agreements between T-mo and AT&T. What about the network speeds before the change and after?
I'm considering canceling my service with T-mo and going with Simple Mobile. I also have a Vibrant. Please, let me know if the change is worth it. Thanks!
I really like simple mobile. Data works well - after installing a custom rom it regularly goes to H or hspa. $50 for unlimited text / voice / 100 meg data is plenty for me. Just don't expect to get much help on the phone. Be sure to buy the sim card on ebay. It's only $1.

[Q] Atrix with no data plan and pre paid voice?

Guys I'm totally new to smartphones so I need an advise. I would like to buy myself Moto Atrix but I don't want to buy a data plan for it. I plan on using Rogers pay-as-you-go voice sim card and use wifi for data. Is that even possible on the smartphone? Also I plan on using this phone in europe so question is would a pre paid voice sim work on this phone in europe? Oh and one more question if the voice sim with wifi for data would work would I be able to use all the internet apps on the phone or some would not work over wifi?

It is possible and a great way to save money. As long as rogers supports quad band GSM and not CMDA (like verizon), then you can use the voice and texting features of this phone all you wish.
Some things to note:
The phone must be unlocked and have some kind of wifi connection established to set up a motoblur account, (buy a used one not a new one).
Google Maps and navigation will not work unless you can find some kind of cacheing program.
Voice actions will not work, they require the google servers to process your voice.
Rogers may decide to change your service manually if they are like At&t. Check out other GSM networks if they try to do this to you.
Thanks for a quick reply. Now why should I buy a used phone? I think right now new/used prices are close. Also would google maps work in a wifi hotspot? I know that I can't use it unless I'm in the wifi hotspot. The same thing with voice commands souldn't they work as long as I'm in the wifi hotspot? I plan on using CoPilot software on the phone so I guess I wouldn't need any data connection for that right?

If you are in a wifi hotspot, your phone will work identically to a phone with a data plan. You must buy it used because to activate moto blur initially, you must have a data connetion (data plan) to sign in, or else it wont let you continue (You cannot enable wifi yet).
Oh I didn't know about motoblur account. Is there a way around that by rooting the phone? What about using my firends sim with data to do that?
I think the process fails and then it'll ask you if you want to connect via wifi..no need for a data connection..

No it's not true. I signed up a motoblur account over the WiFi. I bought mine at costco.com as an upgrade to my original ATT HTC Fuze and I do not have a data plan.

you can make a blur account on the internet from a real computer
Just add data and quit being cheap. They make basic phones for people who don't see the value in paying for internet.

[Q] How do you picture message if you are on T-mobile?

Ok so I am encountering a little problem here.
1 - I do not have a data plan (which is why I picked up the ATT version of the GS2)
2 - I am on T-mobile
3 - I am not able to send or receive pic messages
I turned off my mobile network data on my t-mobile phone but would still be able to send/receive texts.
Anyone have any idea of what is going on?

I've used AT&T windows phones in the past on Tmobile (and vice versa) and usually you have to change quite a bit to get it to recognize the network properly, like the address it uses for mms. Idk if it's the same with Android.

hi all im having a problem with my S3
When ever i try to video call any one i get an error saying it could not connect and do i want to voice call instead,both phones are video enabled & connected to wifi ive tried different wifi spots, one in my house and one in my bro in laws thats just got a S3,he can video call me fine but when i call him i get the error
could it be a network issue (vodafone) or a phone setting ? ive installed tango video calling app and that works just fine but the stock calling app just doesnt work for me ?
Maybe your signal is weak, eg no 3g.

If I understood you right, you aren't using any app to do video calling, so what you are trying to use is 3G video calling, which uses 3G. You can't use Wifi with that.

I am not sure if this applies. but for us, to utilize 3g video calls you need to ask your operator to activate it.

no not tried skype but i have tried a similar app called "tango" that works just fine,last time i tried skype it just had a horrid green screen they said it was a ICS issue,have they updated it now to work ok with ICS ?

Skype is supposed to work trough any net connection, (as in wifi or 3g). But video call over 3g is different from voip services like Skype.

if the video call is made via your network service then you need 3g, if you are making a video calls with third party apps like gtalk,skype etc then you dont need to rely on 3g and can use wifi instead.
still not tried skype because to be honest i dont like the app , you need to be signed in all the time to receive msgs , in the tango app ive got installed i switched from wifi and made a video call using 3G , it worked perfect

hi, this is not entirely correct. Tango is a service app. Just like a voip service. So it relies on internet connection only. 3g video however is a service from your gsm provider. It will only use specific 3g service of your gsm and not wifi.
I must stress SPECIFIC SERVICE here. You may have 3g data enabled but may not have 3g video (or vice versa), also it needs both phones to be capable and enabled.
To check it you may try another Sim which you tested to work with 3g video calls, or try your sim on another device to make the call.

I have the Note from Rogers Canada, upgraded to CM9 release, my provider is Fido, and I'm struggling with getting VoIP work over 3G.
1. Native ICS client. It's OK on WiFi, and on 3G the call is being established in and out, but no sound either direction. I heard 3G calling was blocked in GB client, and there was even a method tweaking the APK to make it work, but obviously something is very different in ICS - that tweak is not applicable - I can't find proper file in this APK.
2. cSipSimple - does not work at all, makes the phone acting weird. Well, last update was in 2011, maybe not compatible with ICS at all.
3. SipDroid - crashes.
4. Dell Voice - crashes.
My provider is freephoneline.ca, and I'm testing VoIP with it without success. I'm a network engineer with rich VoIP experience, and run at home a sophisticated FreePBX setup accessible from Internet. I've tried to register my Note on my home PBX as an extension, and I see same behavior - phones ring, calls establish, but no sound.
I don't understand where's the trouble exactly. Is it the Note, or CM9, or my provider is allowing SIP but blocking RTP? I see that all three Fido's APNs are doing NAT, because the phone shows the registered IP that is different from what I see in whatismyip. Could it be the problem? Problems with NATting RTP usually result in no inbound voice, but outbound should be OK...
I wonder if there's a packet sniffer for Android so I could check the traces, LOL.
Whoever has some success doing SIP calling over Rogers/Fido 3G, please help me out.

I had a similar setup on Telus, and everything works alright. And then I tried Rogers 3G, there is only one way audio, I can't hear anything. But the other side can hear me. And also, my phone can't receive incoming either.
It's probably a problem/restriction with Rogers.

Confirmed, with latest CSipSimple nightly build (Jeez, they didn't release since 2011!!!) I was able to make calls, now with one way audio (out), outbound but not incoming calls, and if the remote party hangs, the phone does not detect it.
Those symptoms are familiar - NAT can't properly handle UDP inwards. Both SIP and RTP are affected. Enabling STUN did not help either.
Well, I'm going to buy data only SIM from Bell, stay tuned...

Well, recently I've been at Rock Point (Lake Eerie), and both my personal Note (Fido) and business Blackberry (Rogers) had no signal on 3G and even GSM, while my friend was chattering and browsing on his Bell connected phone... Maybe Bell's 3G coverage is spotty, but so is Rogers. I've seen too many times that Rogers drops to GSM with no apparent reason, and that means no decent data for VoIP.
We'll see. I'm aiming at LTE anyways, and Bell's LTE spot is WAY bigger according to their official coverage maps.
Someone has to be a guinea pig for new technologies. I hate the idea of paying $70 for CityFido + data, while I could pay $25-$35 for Bell's flex plus $0 for FreePhoneLine.

finally got it working on rogers 3g with pbxes.org, and then add freephoneline as a truck, csipsimple works fine

Yes, and it was a CSipSimple glitch.
By default it has SILK + PCMU + PCMA. I've left only PCMU and it stopped working on 3G only (WiFi was OK). Resetting CSipSimple to defaults resolved it. Weird...
BTW I doubt that PBXes only accepts ILBC, there's quite a number of codecs mentioned in their online help.

I've managed to recreate this eventually. I don't know what's so special about PBXes, but yes it works fine with both Fido and Bell 3G. Thanks for the clue! Looks like I'm going to eliminate my home FreePBX and switch to PBXes.
However, sound is choppy like hell on both, barely usable. And I'm still struggling to get LTE on Bell's SIM, hope it will improve things.
One more question - phonebook in my Android has all the numbers in international format - +1-xxx-xxx-xxxx, +7-xxx-xxx-xxxx etc. When I dial directly from my address book into CSipSiple->PBXes->FPL, FPL rejects the call saying it's not covered by my plan. I believe I need substitute +1 with 1, +7 with 0117 and so on, but how do I do this? PBXes is based on FreePBX, and its rules use + as a special character for adding prefixes I believe...

you are right, pbxes accept pcmu as well, but i thought it's too heavy for 3g, they allow g729a "PASSTHU" only to paid users.
for the choppiness, sip require packets loss way lower than 1%, i'm still trying to figure out what to do about that

for the number formats, since i have all numbers stored on google voice, i went there and deleted all "+" and "-"
in csipsimple, there's an option called filter, i think you can reformat there
a few more tweaks for the choppiness, I disabled echo cancelling since sound from ear piece is not likely to reach microphone.
I also have trouble with the new csipsimple, when i use ilbc, it will freeze after about 30 seconds.
if you directly connect to freephoneline.ca, you need to use PCMU in order to receive phone call over 3G, somehow freephoneline disabled g729a on incoming calls.

SIP as signalling protocol is doing fine. RTP transport for audio is a problem.
I believe nothing can be done over 3G. I'm trying to make it work over LTE - it's supposed to be much better.
However I figured out that unlocked I717R (Rogers) does not connect to Bell's LTE cloud however it should.
I'm going to flash the Bell's radio and try again. I wonder if there's just Bell's baseband for ICS I can download and burn with Odin. I have only found full stock ICS for Bell, and that's a long and messy update path.

not very experienced with radio band and stuff, but have you tried getril? heard it's a very easy app to do this

1. After upgrading radio from Rogers to Bell, Bell LTE is pretty solid and stable while I'm in GTA.
2. Generally, VoIP over 3G is crap, both Bell and Fido/Rogers. VoIP over LTE is mostly OK. No surprise.
3. CSipSimple cannot properly handle Bluetooth handover. By some reason, the call always starts on speakerphone, then has to be routed manually either to BT or earpiece.
4. SIP keepalives are draining battery really fast, no matter if it's Wifi, 3G, or LTE.
5. PBXes.org is GROSS... I've stopped and dismissed my home FreePBX.
Fido has just started offering LTE. Tonight will try and upgrade my SIM card. I wonder though if I need to flash my radio back to Rogers to make it work...
General conclusion - VoIP over cell data is not ready yet for general use. However, geeks like me can save a few cents...

3. Is there a number portability between cell networks and VoIP operators (Canada and US, just to see a big picture)?
I believe this discussion is off-topic here. Can someone suggest a proper forum?

At the moment I decided to stop my VoIP over cellular experiments, this is not productive.
First, Fido has just offered unlimited national calling + 2Gb of data + convenience pack, all for $56, and it's a killer.
Second, new mobile version of Skype, however not SIP based, is soooo much simpler to deal with than SIP solutions. It has a super clear voice Skype-to-Skype (and video too), works seamlessly over firewalls and NAT, and has a decent quality over both HSPA and LTE.
Third, VoLTE is on the horizon (so I believe), and it will completely change the landscape of mobile services, plans, and prices.
Switching to waiting mode.
Fongo crashes on cm but works fine for me on cm10 and most touchwiz ICS ROMs.
