Technical Explanation Wanted: MHL/HDMI Vs. HDMI - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can someone explain why the MHL/HDMI adapter on the SGS2/Infuse needs to be powered unlike the HDMI/Mini HDMI in the Samsung Droid Charge? Why the difference?

Short answer is that its a Samsung decision for it to require power (the power is to charge the phone, not the adapter/cable). Presumably they made this decision to prevent the inevitable "battery life sucks" comments from muppets who don't realise outputting HD content is battery intensive. Too bad more people are more unhappy about the restriction eh?
Other MHL cables should work without needing a charger connected (its a standard connection)... or at least when they're available they should work, so it may be possible to work around this by using an HTC MHL cable for example.

YT video that touches on this.

Is there another type of cable known to work that does not have to have the power requirement?
I don't care if the device cannot be changed, especially as I don't have (and won't buy a new) MHL enabled television set. In fact, I don't think that there are any MHL enabled T.V sets out there, or have I misunderstood the MHL/HDMI specs ? (wikipedia is not very useful on MHL for the moment, hence the confusion).

To owners: do you have TV-Out via 3.5mm jack ? (not MHL)

The title says it all:
Does the new I9100 Galaxy S2 have analogic TV-Out, via 3.5 jack ? Apart from MHL.
My I9000 Galaxy S has, and it works well with a Nokia CA-75U cable.
On gsmarena they only mention TV-out (via MHL A/V link) (and i'm not even sure what that means - a HDMI-out ?). Anyway, all i want is to connect the phone to a TV that only has RCA or SCART inputs.
Thank you.
I have report from an owner who is reliable that his Nokia 3.5mm TV Out cable is not working with the SGSII. I can confirm this tomorrow when I get my phone also.
If I'm not mistaken TV out is only supported via the miniUSB plug to a HDMI socket, with a 1080p maximum resolution. The cable doesn't come supplied with the phone though.
not working with the cable from my old n95. SGS1 did support this. Might be due to the cable being half broken, but I think it just doesn't support it.
I was hoping both methods were simultaneously available, like with Nokia N8.
Just to confirm does not work for me either (on the plus side my cheap Ebay USB OTG cable does work).
Damn. So it's either HDMI out (when they get around to releasing the adapter...) or nothing?
For full mirroring, yes. There is the option to share media via DLNA of course, but I suspect that like me you really need mirroring...

Is mirroring via MHL confirmed?
I have not seen a single video or post confirming this.
You're quite right, mirroring isn't confirmed.
OMG!bad news,s2 cant tvout via 3.5 jack to my old tv!
This way, they sort of make us buy a new HD tv with digital inputs...

I think that it is also representative of the new technology. Honestly, I think RCA connectors are outdated and doesn't really make sense.
RCA uses analog, and most TVs now-a-days are digital. Almost no technology runs on analog anymore, so for phones like Nokia to output RCA, it has to have a chip inside to convert from Digital to an Analog output... Then when it reaches your TV, if it is a digital tv, then it has to convert the analog back to digital. At this point - not only is the resolution decreased, but the signal starts to artifact from converting from digital -> analog -> digital again.
I guess this means that people have to upgrade from their CRT/legacy LCD tvs that only accept RCA/AV inputs.
And for the even older CRT TVs, too bad for them because there's no support for coaxial out.
Now that would be cool -- a coaxial out cable for old TVs, in case we ever discover time travel, and want to show the future to people from the 80s on a nice big 19" color CRT TV.

Just some warning - I'm not sure if that will work since it's not an MHL USB-HDMI cable.
If it works at all, it won't be able to charge your phone and display HDMI at the same time because of the way it's designed.
If you don't want to buy the real cable, I saw a generic version here:
http://www.expansys-usa.com/expansys-mhl-to-hdmi-adapter-black-218572/
If you wait another month (I believe June is the month that the supply is supposedly being produced), I think China will have some copies made soon. For complete functionality and compatibility, make sure the cable meets and complies with MHL standards.

HML tv-out adapter for sgs2. $78 on ebay.
The official Samsung HDMI adapter doesn't look to be out for quite a while yet but there's one by BizLite over at Mobile Fun that should be in over the next fortnight (website says 9-14 days)
Cheaper than the official one too. Agreed that it's quite annoying having no TV-out on the 3.5mm jack!
There is maybe a hope.
Exynos 4210 supports composite output. If SGS2 has connected jack 3.5 to Exynos Composite Video Output soldered, there is a hope.
Hi all I need composite video out to connect phone to car video system - so it`s my only hope to get it from 3.5 jack somehow... or is it possible to convert hdmi to composite or component?

HDMI out without Power Possible?

Hey guys,
Just wondering if there is a way to get the hdmi mirroring to work without the power cable plugged in.
A little about my phone: hboot 1.4, rooted. Im using Deck's sense ROM (i know it's old, but it is really stable) and using Ziggy kernel. Overclocked to 1.8ghz.
Yes and no. A tv supporting mhl will power your phone and just requires the mhl cable which is usb to hdmi. However, the mhl adapter, which is different than the mhl cable, does require power. What the difference is is the adapter is converting the signal so the tv sees it as hdmi. Because the adapter is doing the work, it needs a power source. Very few tvs support mhl natively. I think it just came out this year in consumer tvs. And when you do get a tv supporting mhl natively, you may have to ditch the adapter and use the normal mhl cable, but I'm not for sure. I'm sure you could still use the adapter, but it would probably still require power.

wow, thank you so much! That cleared up a lot.
I'm running into this problem, I had the 3D hooked up to the TV via mhl adapter, and the power plugged in. I was streaming netflix (wifi) to the TV. After 2 hours, my battery went from 98% to 23%.... Any idea as to what gives? When it comes to mirroring, OG Evo was far superior.
Thanks

I think the power drain is from powering the mhl adapter. I'm not 100% sure of the amount but I think it's 5 volts you get through usb. Figure that's what the phone uses to charge. But now the adapter needs that power for the signal now too. So now you're splitting that 5 volts between the 2 devices. This wouldn't be such a big deal if the screen could be turned off the phone but that kills the mirroring. Because the screen is on, you're drawing mode power.
Another example of charging while using the phone. If I drive using Gps, Pandora, and leave the screen on, I may gain 1% battery increase in 30 minutes driving vs maybe 10% if the phone were just sitting there asleep. Both using Gps and mhl adapter involves the phone actually working, thus using power. The difference is the mhl adapter needs power too so a portion of the charge isn't going to the phone to begin with.

Picoprojector
Hello,
To use a pocket picroprojectors like the Microvision ShowWX+ HDMI on my galaxy note or S2 I need to power the converter. it's very bad iPhone can do video out without external power.
I guess the ship used inside this converter is the SiI9292 MHL-to-HDMI Bridge. I need to power it without power the phone (cut MHL VCC line on PCB ?)
The adapter is not expensive I want to check this... For me the power requirements of the cable is low, But if the phone require power to enable video out my hack is not possible
English is not my native language, so I'm sorry for mistakes.

Is there a question here?
And was there really a need to bump a 3 month old thread? And this is the Evo 3d section, not the Galaxy Note section.
HDMI out without Power IS Possible.
This is not a question this is search for solution, didn't notice the date (noob sorry). This thread is #1 referenced on google for :
mhl without power
hdmi without power
This is a generic MHL question, for all MHL phones.
I just realized a DIY tiny self powered MHL to HDMI adapter for my (showwx+ laser) picoprojector with PCB from a chinese adapter.
This could give some information to DIYer that want to make a self powered adapter for picoprojector.
The HDMI out work without charging the phone. I just unsoldered the VCC (red) wire from MHL side of adapter.
The hdmi bridge need 60mA on 5V (0,3 watt) and can work @ 3 - 3.3V. I used a very tiny LiPo (1 cell 200mA) to power it. Now it need a tiny charge and discharge controller. It work for >1 hour (deep discharge <3V can killl the small LiPo).

Another, cheaper and easier, option is to use a portable battery. Preferrably one with an on-off switch so that it'll keep charging the adapter even when the phone is fully charged. The other variety will shut itself off when the phone itself is full.
I had bought a $10 portable battery from Newegg that I throw in my car for occasional use. When I use it for MHL when on the go - I use a retractable usb cable to connect it to the MHL adapter. The portability is pretty decent, since the battery itself is less than half the size of the phone.

Seems that the old MHL HDMI adapters don't work for SIII?

I had one of the 10$ ones from ebay that worked perfect with my galaxy nexus, but when plugged to the S3 it just charges, no output to the TV.
I heard that they've chaged something for the new one, but wanted to confirm and make sure there is no way to make the old one work?
That's pretty unfair move from their side, forcing people to buy new accessories with every new phone...
m?
They upgraded the technology to bypass some disadvantages.
Compared to the old one
- you no longer need an external power source for the MHL adapter
- you can use USB-OTG and MHL together (e.g. playing a video or presentation from your USB-Stick on the television/beamer)
Yes it sucks, but progress in tech always breaks backwards compatibility or at least makes it a lot more complicated.
In this case, no compatibility is known to exist.
I see
those are good advantages and actually I like it, if that's the case
Now are there any adapter that are less than 30$ available, or we are still stuck to the original ones?

Connect GS3 to MHL monitor or nonMHL? whats the difference?

Im buying new monitor, there are some models with MHL support, so what do i get with MHL? my question is how i will benefit from that? what is advantage of monitor with native MHL support?
Both monitors in my final choice have FullHD 1920*1080 resolution and HDMI ports.
LG IPS237L => MHL, HDMI, 1920*1080
http://www.lg.com/hk/it-product/monitor/LG-IPS237L.jsp
LG IPS236V => HDMI, 1920*1080
http://www.lg.com/hk/it-product/monitor/LG-IPS236V.jsp
There is no such thing as "MHL support" for a monitor. That is purely marketing stuff. Every monitor that has HDMI will work with MHL devices as long as the MHL device has the proper cable.
The devices that must be MHL-enabled are the source devices, the one generating the images, not the display.
If you have the adequate MHL adapter for your S III, any monitor or TV with HDMI inputs will work.
I have my S III work with several models of TVs, and none of them state they are "MHL-enabled": they just have HDMI ports.

I think the MHL-enabled monitor mean you don't need a MHL cable. However do note that SIII went out of the MHL specification with S3. Make sure that S3 is supported before your purchase one.Otherwise you will still need a S3/Note2 specific MHL cable.
i have already ordered MHL cable for my GS3, indeed cheep one from ebay but it should work fine.
i think that MHL support is option to charge your phone directly over HDMI=> mUSB cable, so there is no need for extra power. but think is new 11pin and changed specification of Galaxy S3, so i still need extra power connection
this MHL support is pure marketing, thanks for answers

MHL Cable/Screen Mirroring

Just got it, but would like to watch movies on my TV. I have chromecast but i wanted a wired solution to eliminate any lag.
I know the phone has MHL 3.0, but I have a 5 year old Samsung non-smart TV.
which MHL cables can I use? My only requirement is that the MHL adapter should NOT need power. Basically looking for something like the iPhone HDMI/Lighting adapter, or the Samsung MHL 2.0 cables that didn't require power.
Thanks in advance.
Something like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/LINDY-MHL-H...e=UTF8&qid=1445628106&sr=8-1&keywords=MHL+3.0
"Additional USB Micro-B female for charging & power"
In my experience, MHL requires power, I don't think the phone pumps out enough to power the HDMI without it. That might not be conceptually correct, but every lead I've ever tried will only work with power connected anyway.

MHL 3.0 do not require external power, the port is there for compatibility with MHL 2.0 & 1.0 phones or if you want to charge the phone while using the adaptor.
This adaptor works fine without external power on my Z5C
Somebody gave me this .
MHL Micro USB to HDMI HD TV Adapter Cable Samsung Galaxy S3 S4 S5 Note 2 Tab 3 (from ebay)
needless to say, it doesn't work with my Z5c, it even says so in the description. Is this because the cable is not MHL 3?
Samsung uses a different number of pins I think.
Also, doesn't the receiving device have to support MHL?

Good to hear MHL 3.0 doesn't require external power but it might be the power output on Z5c usb port is higher. Are you sure it doesn't has any problem because when I'm reading the customer reviews I found that.
"I'm usually a fan of Lindy products and have bought a lot in the past, but this adapter has a critical flaw and I'm appalled that they have decided to sell it anyway. When connected to either my Xperia Z1 or Z5 it creates so much interference with the mobile network signal that it the signal completely cuts out. Meaning I can still share the screen, but not stream any content. A quick look on Google confirmed that the adapter is the cause, and cheap knock-off active MHL adapters often do this."

I haven't used it that much yet, only to display content from the phone's SD card. I'll give it a test tonight, to see if there are any problems with network signal while using the adaptor.
