Is it possible to use the touch buttons as an LED notifier for missed calls, email, and SMS? Sure they cant change colors but at least it could blink every X seconds/minutes.
You do Realize this has been asked before.. I sent Jac a thread that has this working on the I9000.. Not sure if he's still looking into it or not though.
its already done for Captivate.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780732
Whats included:
-Correct Screen auto-rotate
-HSUPA support
-MobileAP support (aka wireless tethering)
-Selecting with power button in recovery mode
-External SD card support
-Postboot scripts
-Voodoo lagfix
-Softkey Backlight Notification
I tried and got bricked... so if someone can make this for Vibrant i will be happy.
I use the app noLED. Works pretty well. Found it in the market.

I personally don't care for that app. It's okay idea, but what really needs to get done is samsung to implement the Notifications into the buttons. I've seen what the i9000 has done, it's not too bad. This has been posted many times, you might want to try the search button

Ive been using that but its questionable how it affects battery life and long-term effects on the screen life.
noLED is a decent alternative imo
When I used to noLED I would press the volume buttons and it would give me the volume sound and light up the screen but still on black. So I predicted it would kill my battery quicker.

NoLED is a PITA...it adds another layer of lockscreens/button-touches to get your notifications, thus I didn't care for it much. It also FC'd on me all the time...YMMV.
Someone will most likely get the button led flash to work one day, just be patient.
Flash notify in the market place will suffice for now and it actually works pretty good
surprised this hasn't already been implemented for the vibrant. if it's already done on the captivate isn't it just a matter of time for someone to port the code over?
Reason it hasn't been implemented got the vibrant its because your talking a whole new kernel build... Along with that the current implementations of it, from what I read prior, aren't too fond of battery life and they can't make it blink like a led would do. The buttons backlight just stays on. I don't know if that has changed any time recently but thats what it was like the previous time I looked it up.

hmm I never had a issue with it nor any extra battery drain. Is it the best coolest app nope. But it works for notifications

The best alternative IMO is Flash Notify. Been using it for a long time with no issues. Really wanted the soft keys to light up for notifications but I don't find that necessary anymore.

First of all, I wanted to say my CRT off animation is weird on my SII. It seems to flash white before starting. It was much smoother and sexier on my Captivate and even looks better on the DROID 3. It looks weird on mine. I've tried it on both UnNamed and Cog X2, both have that weird thing. Is it just KH7, or is it just something unfixable?
My CRT off animation looks like that too. it looks bad. it started when I flashed cog b4(had it on stock and it looked fine).

Yeah it does look bad. It looks fine on stock? I'll have to look into that. I guess it's something with custom ROMs. It's really sad...
when I say stock I don't mean pure stock. I had it after I flashed the 12 toggle mod and it included it and it looked fine then but after flashing cog I noticed it. If I can help in anyway let me know. Your work with the captivate was great btw

I'm talking to GTG right now. I mentioned this, hopefully I'll get to the bottom of it. Personally I'm not sure what exactly to do...
On another note, he fixed my animation issues (present in his UnNamed ROM and Cog X2) by disabling slowBlur. Ever noticed pressing Menu on the home screen and opening popups like in settings with brightness and volume, that the popups open with an animation that seems to be half missing? He fixed that for me. So I'm hoping he will find this too. The guy really knows his stuff.
Thanks for the compliment! I hope to soon start some projects for the SII!
Some news coming from GTG
However, the CRT animation on dg's rom and on my rom (with the addon) is as good as it's going to get. It just isn't rendered right on the Galaxy S II and no one has figured out why definitively. Whoever told you it works fine on stock just doesn't have a very discerning eye. Read that whole thread I linked you to. The international GSII owners already went through this long ago and accepted that the CRT animation will never be quite right on the SGS2 with Samsung based ROMs. CRT is fine on CM7 though apparently.

This is so weird. Up to this point, my CRT worked wonderfully. So well that it looked native. I saw this thread, so I looked at it again and now mine has the white screen issue (for the first time) .
EDIT - Upon reboot, my CRT returned to normal. One of the lucky ones I guess.
Thought it was my just my phone. It was fine until yesterday...well at least I first noticed it yesterday...all static-barcode looking. But I can say honestly at one point it was definitely smooth because I played with it continuously when I first enabled it because it looked so sweet on my screen.

Apparently it has a lot to do with the music player and screen shot app. But no matter what I still get a weird flash in the middle of it, ruining it. On KH7 anyway, with slowBlur off.
Rebooted, still funky.

It isn't a fix, nor does it actually work. It looks better, and that's it. Notice how when you press the power button, the screen turns white then shrinks towards the middle. That's not how the animation should work. It should take the screen, and shrink that towards the center, I assume with a white outline. The problem is the last screenshot taken I guess, or just the buffer/cache somewhere.

On UnNamed with slowBlur off, a reboot makes it look almost acceptable. Still wrong compared to my Captivate.
Restoring a backup of stock that came with my phone, gonna enable it there and see if that works. Just in case...
On stock firmware which came with the phone, I manually enabled CRT off. It works, but still not correctly. It does not shrink the screen, but a while screen. And has a weird flash in it. Guess that's a nope. It's USABLE but nowhere near perfect.
So I need someones help. I deleted the screen capture apk, and now pressing the key combo just makes the phone vibrate. So somewhere there is a link between that apk and the button combo. Can someone help me find that?
I would help but I have almost no android ( or Linux for that matter) experience. I would love to learn so I can finally start giving back to the community.

So the CRT should be on here completely bone stock? After reading this, I tried and do not get the CRT animation. I checked and all animations is selected. WTF?
Hey all,
Searched the forums for this and found a bit of discussion, but not a fix.
I know some people are using swiftkey x and not having display problems, but for me it's borked, no matter what i do. I've tried clearing app data, removing and reinstalling etc - nothing seems to work. Settings pages occupy about 2/3 of the screen real estate, centered horizontally and stuck to the top of the screen vertically, and when the keyboard is in use, it takes up 80% of the screen but mostly with black empty space. For this latter reason, it's pretty much unusable.
My carrier is Orange UK, but my handset is a retail/SIM unlocked stock ROM. It is up to date with OTA updates.
Is there a fix for this? Or am i screwed?
Thanks all, and apologies if this question has already been answered - i did try in earnest to find it.

No worries The market just like you. In fact i've been a SwiftKey customer for a long long time. My old SwiftKey licence seemed to transfer over to SwiftKey X when it was formally released. I did have the X beta, and at first it was fine, then after one particular update it started with this screen problem, and has been that way ever since, even after the official first release.

This sounds hopeful! I haven't heard of spare parts but im assuming its some sort of tweaking program? I can use it to disable some sort of legacy fix for older, none qHD apps? is that right?
EDIT: I installed spare parts but just have the following options on a settings-style screen:
battery history
battery information
usage stats
window anims
transition anims
fancy input anims
fancy rotation anim
end button behavior
haptic feedback
compatibility mode
wifi sleep policy
activity/process management
brightness mode
font size
show compass in maps
Only one which looks promising is compatibility mode?
EDIT2: Thanks a lot for that crnkoj - got it working! For all who're reading this thread and want to know: use spare parts to disable compatibility mode!
Sure, np. And ye, i meant compatibility fix just didn't remember the correct name.
I have been using the same rom since the day I received my Galaxy Note so I am used to it by now since I have been using it for over four months. I even flashed a couple other Gingerbread roms which were nice but I came back to the Solaris Prime rom qickly after flashing. After waiting since the first ICS leak I got bored and flased a custom ICS rom with the intention of playing with it for a while then flashing back to Gingerbread. The screen was bright on every Gingerbread rom I flashed, but on the ICS rom I flashed it was nowhere near as bright. I always use full brightness and never use auto adjust which is what I set it to on the ICS rom. This is the ICS rom I tried out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1686320 Now my question is, has anyone else noticed this or is it maybe only a problem with this rom? Are ICS roms not as bright as Gingerbread roms cause I need the screen to be very bright? I noticed the brightness was very dim compared to Gingerbread roms I have used within five seconds of setting the brightness to full and turning off auto adjust. If all the ICS roms are like this I think I will stay with Gingerbread cause this is a deal breaker for me.
EDIT: I figured it out. It is the Auto Adjust Screen Power setting, when checked the screen becomes dim when unchecked the screen is vived and bright. I guess this setting is not in all roms.
Hard to compare since I can only load one ROM at a time. But I never noticed the difference in brightness. I leave mine turned up also as I am frequently outside with my work and play. The 15 toggle mod is not somehow overiding your brightness setting in ICS?
I believe I have noticed the same issue. I thought maybe it was just me, but apparently I am not the only one. I am rooted and running BlackStar rom right now, and I can compare it side by side with my girlfriends stock unrooted note and hers seems noticeably brighter. But even that I chalked up to her not having a screen protector and me having one. But I wouldn't think the screen protector would inhibit the brightness much if at all.
I also have gotten to the point of using full brightness, becuase auto brightness is unusable at times, even indoors.
Are we the only 2? LOL. I have noticed another issue with the backlight today. The screen seemed dim, but every once in a while would get bright for like half a second then go back to dim. I have it set to full brightness, but I tried covering the sensor, or at least what I think is the sensor(gonna have to google that) and it didn't change anything.

This is not anything that I needed to compare. It was noticable and since it happened I have read about other devices having the same issue after upgrading to ICS. It seem like the only devices this happens with are Samsung devices cause every device I found with this issue was a Samsung device. Not sure if they are putting a limit on brightness cause I know a lot of people said the contrast was too high on the Note but there is clearly something making the screen look washed out with ICS. I want my screen to be bright like it is capable of. I want my whites to be white like they are on Gingerbread.

That makes no sense. I need a dev to tell me they limit the brightness we can use before I would beleive that. And not only that the problem seems to be happening on official firmware upgrades not just custom roms. I do not think its a coincidence that all the devices I have found this problem happening on after updating to ICS were Samsung devices.
I recreated the problem so people can see it happening on their devices. Try this
1: Turn full brightness on and turn off auto adjust.
2: Open the default browser, and Gmail and leave them running.
3: Now go to home and long press the home button and the app icons will popup. Pay attention to Gmail and the browser, and you will notice the task manager icons are much brighter than the apps.
4: Without taking your eyes off the task icons open the browser and you will notice it gets dimmer then the task icons.
5: Now hit the menu button and when it pops up the browser will get brighter. Hit it again it will get dimmer.
6: Now hit the tab button and you will also see the tab icon is much brighter than the app itself.
I have noticed the apps that have the black menu popup get lighter and darker when you push the menu button but the ones with the white menu popup stay the same when you push the menu button. The weird thing is it seems like the system menus, app menus and the launcher are all as bright as they should be its just the actual apps that are washed out. I have only tried two AOKP roms so maybe this is a problem with those roms but it is very noticeable especially on apps that have white backgrounds. I cannot figure out why the whole system is bright til I open an app then the app gets dimmer then the rest of the system.
Lol

This ICS rom I'm using (FJ ucle2#6...is not "darker" per sey .
I'm leaning more toward darker theme features perhaps ?
But I prefer the dark background popups with white letters etc. And I suppose it's possible that the ICS leaks are reduced to improve battery life ?
I honestly can't say, but I do know that my stock GB was like looking into the sun at night for me.
My eyes don't do bright very well ....g
I have the same problem!!!
I use my Galaxy Note (ATT) at full brightness and I have had it for 4 months. Got bored and decided to root it yesterday and installed an ICS rom. The screens were noticeably darker even at full brightness. It was depressing me and I wanted to go back to Gingerbread, but the MDSUM of my nand backup was incorrect for some reason, so I have not been able to do that. Looking around now for some Gingerbread roms to flash today!!!

Just an FYI, - I was downloading another rom from the same team as the one you recommended when I saw your update, so I went ahead and flashed the one I already downloaded. Took me back to 2.3.6, but it did NOT fix my screen brightness issue. I therefore went ahead and took my phone completely back to stock, unrooted and it's all good now.

Thats the rom I use and its super bright. Try it out I promise you will like it.
just pointing out - I agree about the brightness thing.
specially so in my favorite new rom, the latest from team perfection (the one released at the end of june 2012). it's an amazing rom, but it is quite dramatically dimmer in autobrightness modes than GB roms and is in fact so fim in autobrightness modes that I can't see it very well with my old eyes. I had no problem with other roms, and the stock gb rom is MUCH bright in auto mode.
then I take it out of autobrightness and go outside in the sun. it's almost unreadable in the sun outdoors (walking around). reverted to stock nandroid in autobrightness mode - I can read it ok in the sun. reverted to nandroid of the new ics rom. crank the brightness, can't read it, autobrightness is no brighter (maybe even dimmer) in the sun.
this isn't acceptible - the display on the note is amazing, why take away one of the best features of the note?
I cant' even use the phone in the sun when walking now.
I hope someone can find a way to change the brightness levels after the fact - that would be a really helpful tweak for those of us who can easily tell the difference (between readable and unreadable) in our roms.
I've looked through build.prop files but can't see anything there obviously related to screen brightness, so it must be something in teh roms or kernels.
cheers

I mentioned this on one if the rom threads and they got mad for some reason. They acted like I was making the issue up. I do not know how I noticed the ICS roms are not as bright as the Gingerbread roms but not many others have noticed. It is insanely evident that the ICS roms do not match up in brightness when compared to Gingerbread. I have also searched the web about the issue and all the devices with this problem are made by Samsung. The big bright screen should not suffer with an upgrade. I want my screen to be just as bright on ICS as it is on Gingerbread. With this issue ICS is a big turn off for me. I am beginning to think that all the reports of over saturation on the screen of newer Samsung devices have forced Samsung to put something in the newer ICS software to control the problem that some had with the saturation being too bright. I really hope someone else notices so it can be taken seriously and someone will give it some attention and fix it.
cool, yea I read that... LoL, I felt bad for you.
I think I may have found the possible culprit, if devs are doing this on purpose at least.

I'll look at this tomorrow and see if I can brighten up my new favorite rom, team perfection (the june 28th or whatever latest rc1 version is).
PS: I killed my flash of that rom by accident this afternoon and now am reinstalling the whole damned thing and all of my apps again. all in an effort to brighten up the display. {stupid}

I have the GS2 for Sprint and I just got the new 4.0.4 update - I'm not happy. I was excited to get it, but after using it for one day I was less than thrilled. They have really retarded the ability to move quickly through the phone, LOTS of screen animations and transitions are added and really do make things much slower as the screens pops around on you and places buttons in different locations. I want these turned off ASAP. I went to the developer menu and "turned them off" as I was instructed from another website, but that didn't do a damn thing. Every menu change has a cute little animation adding time and lagging my muscle memory screen presses. The phone is laggy now, it wasn't before, at all.
Anyone else share my strife or know how to fix my issue?
Thank you
I totally disagree...since 4.0.4 firmwares have started to come out, i even managed to stay on stock firmware for a couple of weeks without flashing custom ones. S2 can take care of animations without lag.

Well, you "managed to stay on it for a couple weeks" implies that eventually you didn't like it.
I Don't have lag with the animations, I have lag with nothing happening, and THEN whatever it is I was going into pops up.
Test - right now I hit home screen and it takes about half a second, going into anything takes the same amount of time. This sounds rather trivial, but when comparing to the way it originally operated I think we're talking about a set back.
I'm not opposed to switching to another rom, but I've gotten to the point in my life where I use my phone enough for actual work that I don't have the time. Ideally, I would like the old ROM back, and rooted removing the bloatware.
I will do some research to see if I can achieve my goals, I just wanted to see if someone had an answer for my questions and see if I could avoid the issue altogether and get over the "Facebook layout" syndrome.

I have the GS2 for Sprint and I just got the new 4.0.4 update - I'm not happy.
<snip!>
Anyone else share my strife or know how to fix my issue?
Thank you

You're in the forum for the i9100, a phone that doesn't even work on Sprint.
The Sprint Galaxy S2 is the Epic 4g Touch.
No matter what phone , wether the original i9100 or the sprint one , things at first may seem slow , til everything is caching and stuffs ... Do a factory reset or format /data and /cache .. Would defenitly make a difference..(if it still lags try to disable the animations and transitions OR activate the force GPU and see)
I didn't post this in here, it got moved. I think...

You just posted another in here. Still the wrong forum. So I'd say you did post in here. Go to the Epic 4g Touch forum I linked above before you irrevocably damage your phone.
Yeah welcome to xda.If you dont like stock rom/update then flash a custom rom.
