I have been using the same rom since the day I received my Galaxy Note so I am used to it by now since I have been using it for over four months. I even flashed a couple other Gingerbread roms which were nice but I came back to the Solaris Prime rom qickly after flashing. After waiting since the first ICS leak I got bored and flased a custom ICS rom with the intention of playing with it for a while then flashing back to Gingerbread. The screen was bright on every Gingerbread rom I flashed, but on the ICS rom I flashed it was nowhere near as bright. I always use full brightness and never use auto adjust which is what I set it to on the ICS rom. This is the ICS rom I tried out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1686320 Now my question is, has anyone else noticed this or is it maybe only a problem with this rom? Are ICS roms not as bright as Gingerbread roms cause I need the screen to be very bright? I noticed the brightness was very dim compared to Gingerbread roms I have used within five seconds of setting the brightness to full and turning off auto adjust. If all the ICS roms are like this I think I will stay with Gingerbread cause this is a deal breaker for me.
EDIT: I figured it out. It is the Auto Adjust Screen Power setting, when checked the screen becomes dim when unchecked the screen is vived and bright. I guess this setting is not in all roms.
Hard to compare since I can only load one ROM at a time. But I never noticed the difference in brightness. I leave mine turned up also as I am frequently outside with my work and play. The 15 toggle mod is not somehow overiding your brightness setting in ICS?
I believe I have noticed the same issue. I thought maybe it was just me, but apparently I am not the only one. I am rooted and running BlackStar rom right now, and I can compare it side by side with my girlfriends stock unrooted note and hers seems noticeably brighter. But even that I chalked up to her not having a screen protector and me having one. But I wouldn't think the screen protector would inhibit the brightness much if at all.
I also have gotten to the point of using full brightness, becuase auto brightness is unusable at times, even indoors.
Are we the only 2? LOL. I have noticed another issue with the backlight today. The screen seemed dim, but every once in a while would get bright for like half a second then go back to dim. I have it set to full brightness, but I tried covering the sensor, or at least what I think is the sensor(gonna have to google that) and it didn't change anything.

Well did you compare when you both stock? Not every screen is created equally. I've seen identical phones next to each other and both have completely different temperatures on the screen (one bluish and one yellowish).

This is not anything that I needed to compare. It was noticable and since it happened I have read about other devices having the same issue after upgrading to ICS. It seem like the only devices this happens with are Samsung devices cause every device I found with this issue was a Samsung device. Not sure if they are putting a limit on brightness cause I know a lot of people said the contrast was too high on the Note but there is clearly something making the screen look washed out with ICS. I want my screen to be bright like it is capable of. I want my whites to be white like they are on Gingerbread.

That makes no sense. I need a dev to tell me they limit the brightness we can use before I would beleive that. And not only that the problem seems to be happening on official firmware upgrades not just custom roms. I do not think its a coincidence that all the devices I have found this problem happening on after updating to ICS were Samsung devices.
I recreated the problem so people can see it happening on their devices. Try this
1: Turn full brightness on and turn off auto adjust.
2: Open the default browser, and Gmail and leave them running.
3: Now go to home and long press the home button and the app icons will popup. Pay attention to Gmail and the browser, and you will notice the task manager icons are much brighter than the apps.
4: Without taking your eyes off the task icons open the browser and you will notice it gets dimmer then the task icons.
5: Now hit the menu button and when it pops up the browser will get brighter. Hit it again it will get dimmer.
6: Now hit the tab button and you will also see the tab icon is much brighter than the app itself.
I have noticed the apps that have the black menu popup get lighter and darker when you push the menu button but the ones with the white menu popup stay the same when you push the menu button. The weird thing is it seems like the system menus, app menus and the launcher are all as bright as they should be its just the actual apps that are washed out. I have only tried two AOKP roms so maybe this is a problem with those roms but it is very noticeable especially on apps that have white backgrounds. I cannot figure out why the whole system is bright til I open an app then the app gets dimmer then the rest of the system.
Lol

This ICS rom I'm using (FJ ucle2#6...is not "darker" per sey .
I'm leaning more toward darker theme features perhaps ?
But I prefer the dark background popups with white letters etc. And I suppose it's possible that the ICS leaks are reduced to improve battery life ?
I honestly can't say, but I do know that my stock GB was like looking into the sun at night for me.
My eyes don't do bright very well ....g
I have the same problem!!!
I use my Galaxy Note (ATT) at full brightness and I have had it for 4 months. Got bored and decided to root it yesterday and installed an ICS rom. The screens were noticeably darker even at full brightness. It was depressing me and I wanted to go back to Gingerbread, but the MDSUM of my nand backup was incorrect for some reason, so I have not been able to do that. Looking around now for some Gingerbread roms to flash today!!!

Just an FYI, - I was downloading another rom from the same team as the one you recommended when I saw your update, so I went ahead and flashed the one I already downloaded. Took me back to 2.3.6, but it did NOT fix my screen brightness issue. I therefore went ahead and took my phone completely back to stock, unrooted and it's all good now.

Thats the rom I use and its super bright. Try it out I promise you will like it.
just pointing out - I agree about the brightness thing.
specially so in my favorite new rom, the latest from team perfection (the one released at the end of june 2012). it's an amazing rom, but it is quite dramatically dimmer in autobrightness modes than GB roms and is in fact so fim in autobrightness modes that I can't see it very well with my old eyes. I had no problem with other roms, and the stock gb rom is MUCH bright in auto mode.
then I take it out of autobrightness and go outside in the sun. it's almost unreadable in the sun outdoors (walking around). reverted to stock nandroid in autobrightness mode - I can read it ok in the sun. reverted to nandroid of the new ics rom. crank the brightness, can't read it, autobrightness is no brighter (maybe even dimmer) in the sun.
this isn't acceptible - the display on the note is amazing, why take away one of the best features of the note?
I cant' even use the phone in the sun when walking now.
I hope someone can find a way to change the brightness levels after the fact - that would be a really helpful tweak for those of us who can easily tell the difference (between readable and unreadable) in our roms.
I've looked through build.prop files but can't see anything there obviously related to screen brightness, so it must be something in teh roms or kernels.
cheers

I mentioned this on one if the rom threads and they got mad for some reason. They acted like I was making the issue up. I do not know how I noticed the ICS roms are not as bright as the Gingerbread roms but not many others have noticed. It is insanely evident that the ICS roms do not match up in brightness when compared to Gingerbread. I have also searched the web about the issue and all the devices with this problem are made by Samsung. The big bright screen should not suffer with an upgrade. I want my screen to be just as bright on ICS as it is on Gingerbread. With this issue ICS is a big turn off for me. I am beginning to think that all the reports of over saturation on the screen of newer Samsung devices have forced Samsung to put something in the newer ICS software to control the problem that some had with the saturation being too bright. I really hope someone else notices so it can be taken seriously and someone will give it some attention and fix it.
cool, yea I read that... LoL, I felt bad for you.
I think I may have found the possible culprit, if devs are doing this on purpose at least.

I'll look at this tomorrow and see if I can brighten up my new favorite rom, team perfection (the june 28th or whatever latest rc1 version is).
PS: I killed my flash of that rom by accident this afternoon and now am reinstalling the whole damned thing and all of my apps again. all in an effort to brighten up the display. {stupid}

It is very unsual for me to get so angry with a website developer that I get violently negative feelings of aggression toward them, but in this case I can strongly and confidently say that the developers of ******* need to be forcefully removed from existence. or at least their crap advertising code does.

I haven't applied it yet, but I want to, just to see if it will fix the massive issues I've had with this phone. I know it supposedly breaks root, but I don't care about that. I know it also should fix the missing phone icon on the lockscreen (broken in 1.13.651.7).
Any issues?
It suck. Gps doesn't work when I really need it to, home page goes blank after hitting home from texting (sometimes), Gps symbol stays crossed out after turning off and back on, and worst of all front facing camera doesn't work...instead I get the rear image fliped upside down. I'm not rooted, nor do I need or want to. I'm going to try to take it 2 a store in the morning. I'll try to do a update when i find out more.

Why don't u just backup and flash the stock ROM with the update built in and see. U can test it out without losing root
That's what i ran before my current ROM and it ran good. Weather fix and screenshot was really nice

I dont know why your camera does not work because mine and about 8-13 other evo 3d's my friends own all work after the ota. Our gps locks on hella lot faster also. I have literally NO issues so far. plus, my battery life, increased by a whole day with heavy texting, bluetoothing music to my headphone for 6+ hours a day, and 3g pandora.
My only Quirk that bugs me is when unlocking the screen sometimes it goes into the camera but that is it.
I dont notice much difference other than that

Same here + the camera looks better.
Initially, I was disappointed by the performance of the ROM, but I later found that my tweaking I did to build.prop (increase dalvik vm, gui forced to run hardware acceleration) was actually causing this version to perform poorly compared to the 1.13.651.7 ROM. After not using those tweaks anymore, the 2.08.651.2 update is running smoothly. Only complaint I have is with the new CIQ spyware that is on this version However, it is easily removed with custom kernel and uninstalling the proper apks.
Love it. Camera green hue is gone for me. Built in screen caputure (power+home button). Adjusting volume no longer cause stutter when viewing videos. Everything just runs smoother. I say upgrade away.
Thanks for all your responses.

A couple of these problems I've had before upgrading anything (GPS went out once when I was outside in the middle of LA, GPS icon stays on/off after switching it off/on). Hopefully I won't get your other issues, but everything else is going wrong with this phone, so I'll probably try the custom-rom-upgrade first.

I have to say...Stock roms being buggy does not equate to custom roms being twice as buggy. I would highly recommend you root before taking the OTA and checking out some custom roms. You might be quite surprised with the performance. Just my 2 cents though. Good luck either way!

My "DU4L C0R3 SH00T3R" shot you down in 3D! -Security Off-
The display on my GS2 has a "grainy" appearance when used at medium to low brightness. It's hard to describe, but it basically makes colors on the phone look like they have a grainy texture. When stuff scrolls on the screen (pulling down the notification bar, for instance), it looks like partially transparent images moving over a textured background.
Is this a normal aspect of the SAMOLED+ screen? I haven't seen this reported, but I've seen it on all 3 of the GS2 phones I've used. It basically makes the display look like total crap at lower brightness settings.
Are you using a screen protector?
I've had a couple on mine, and have noticed different the quality of brightness and colours between each, particularly at lower brightness levels.
Nope, no screen protector.

I'm running CM 7.1 -- I'm not sure what you're referring to, or if it's something you can only change on the stock Sammy firmware.
Even just a confirmation that someone else experiences this would make me feel a lot better
I do have it, only visible at a low brightness setting, and even then it's mostly on white/light-grey colors.
I think this is the same issue as well:
http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/444844-do-i-have-problem-my-screen.html
Nothing to worry about, just another price to pay for having an AMOLED screen. Search the forums, you'll find a couple more prevalent issues with those screens. As long as it doesn't affect your everyday use just pretend it's not there.
this happened with my old white Galaxy SII. I posted a topic about it a month ago. There are other users who also have this issue, so you are definetely not the only one
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
So today, I put my friend's SII right next to mine and pulled up images on both to compare. She got hers in December and is running the older build, and I got mine a month ago and am running the latest update from Samsung/at&t.
I noticed that aside from the worse battery life, mine also has a skewed screen saturation. It's way more unnatural and quite dark (the blacks and their contrast make it almost impossible to see) and the whites are more dull. On hers (not updated), the screen color was excellent, just like how I saw on the Skyrocket and the Infuse, with more brighter colors and whiter whites. Both were set to auto brightness and then on every other brightness level to rule that out as being the cause. Even on auto brightness (and really, on every brightness level), hers was always a little bit more "brighter".
So, did anyone else notice the different color change when they updated to the newest build? I would like to know, in case it is my actual phone hardware that is being the issue.
Samoled screens vary so inconsistencies are there, other than that try setting your "screen mode" to dynamic in display settings. Might have been different compared to your friends the whole time. The last thing you could do is wait for Supercurio as he is working on a screen tuning app. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1241590

Oh wow, I didn't know SAMOLED screens could vary by that much, thanks for the heads up. I tried looking for the screen mode option, but it seems like it's only on the international version (or perhaps also on the older official Samsung/at&t ROM, mine doesn't have that option).
I'll first try waiting to see if anything gets changed for the upcoming ICS update. If not, I may just have to go back to the good old days when I was flashing like a mad(wo)man when I was on the Infuse 4G.
Very common thing apparently. I have three co-workers who also have a GS2 and two of them look more "blueish" than the other two. We compared them on the simple google.com page with brightness all the way up on each phone, with stock ROM's.
It's the same thing with any phone. Put two iphones next to each other and the screens will look different.

It's available on customized AT&T firmwares and ported international firmwares.
One of MANY features AT&T intentionally removed and why I basically no longer ever touch AT&T-mangled crap.
Does anyone else feel like the ICS OTA was just kind of thrown together and not built very well? To me, nothing seems to be themed consistently and I feel as though ICS/Sense doesn't fit very well together. In some cases, I'll get menus with the black and blue ICS theme and then other times I'll get the Sense white and green menus. Other than having ICS (which is awesome) I don't think HTC put much time into this update. What do you guys think?

Blame verizon all you want for the bad timing of the update, but the performance of ICS is 100% HTC's fault. No doubt about it
Problem is that HTC is mostly green and they want to stay green except Android is turning blue. I guess HTC needs to learn how to theme? Oh and I blame Verizon for everything as well, what a bunch of blowers..
It's kinda sh*tty but it doesn't bother most of us since we're on custom roms that are themed. Source is the only thing I care about.

I was annoyed to find out on a trip this weekend that the navigation voice does not have its own volume and if you play music at the same time, you can barely hear the voice. I had to mute my music when there was a lot of directions coming up.
It is an improvement for me
I am completely stock. I don't like to root until Verizon wont cover the phone any longer. But I was getting close though because of the data drop issues. ICS is not the solution to everything, but it made my phone able to work like I expect. I don't know if I blame HTC, Verizon or the tooth fairy. I know that they all should have been bothered by the number of people running stock that were dealing with not being able to us the internet as a general rule that is a core function of a smart phone, imho.
For those of you who are developing roms, thank you. I will root this phone, probably around Christmas. Thanks for keeping a variety around. :good:

The browser hasn't been slower for me but I haven't tried videos on it yet. I am annoyed handsent isn't syncing the pics but since the address book is it sounds like a handcent problem. Overall I am happy with it. It's nice I can disable the bloatware and I like how ICS is. I like the sense its not much difference then GB, 4.0 would be nice but at least my phone is working now.

Nice! Glad to hear that you're happy with your phone and the update :good:. If you're having battery issues, try reducing the frequency of data synchs etc. Lower screen brightness for general use etc. Could also try a battery calibration. Good luck!

I kept my sync frequencies, and screen brightness the same so I could compare battery efficiency between GB and ICS. ICS is about 50% worse, in my experience. My extended battery lasts 1 day 9 hours to 0% battery, where it used to last a full 2. It's horrendous. If I reduced sync times and brightness, etc. on GB I would be approaching or exceeding the 3 day mark. Users shouldn't have to do all that just to hit 2 days on ICS. I know some users do not experience these battery issues (my wife and coworker do not), so I have to assume it's an actual defect in my handset.
I agree with OP. Nothing seemed themes consistently at all. I couldn't stand bouncing back and force between ICS and Sense themes, which were entirely different (and arguably clashing).
I spent plenty of time waiting for the OTA, and when it finally came and flashed a new ROM that night.
Screen brightness messes up after using camera (mine stays at full brightness until I lock and unlock again), landscape keyboard is severely ****ed (not so much the keyboard but the displayed content above it where my cursor is), and the themes a little but they don't bother me at all. Anyone else have those problems?

Ive always had that auto brightness problem with the camera even on the droid incredible so its not new to me but i did notice that if you try a new theme some parts of HTC's green theme turn into your color of theme. But not always.
I agree with everything said pretty much accept battery life. Mines still good even on these stock kernals.
Moral of the story... Nexus only from now on lol. The themeing issues and old sense and old version of ICS when we finally get the update is annoying to me. Why didn't they just release the source and not push an outdated update lol.

Yeah I turned on the blue skin theme and it comes up with some blue and some green. Both look fine so I don't complain but the landscape keyboard thing is super annoying. Anyone have that problem or am I the minority?

Hey guys, i installed AOKP cm9 Monday night and once installed i fell in love. I came from th eclipse rom which was good but just the customization and look of AOKP is beautiful.
SO this leads me to my problems. When i flashed the rom and used it yesterday it was pretty much working great. I didnt use the dialer much so i dont know if t was happening then or just started. It seems if i call someone and the screen goes black due to the proximity sensor it will not come back after to end the call or when i pull the phone away from my face. I have to constantly press the power button to unlock the phone then i can click end then the screen locks again and have to swipe unlock to get back into the phone. This is a major PITA and wondering if it is a known bug or am i the only one.
Also from looking at the official thread here it states the camera is working but mine does not.
NVM just got it going
Also wondering when i was using elclispe and would go into rom toolbox > build.prop tweaks i could adjust about 7 things such as prox sensor and such. Now i only have 4 lcd, ring delay vmheap, scan interval. Why do i only get 4 tweaks versus the 7 i had before.
Add: Also i just noticed now when i get a call my screen stays blank. I had to again click the power button x amount of times to get in and now recieving a message "processcom.android is not responding. would u like to close it"
Ugghh this is so aggrevating
lso noiced in apps running im using at the highest 330-350 mb and states betwee 48-90mb free. thats to high isnt it

But for the life of me, trying to use the dialpad was nearly impossible while on a call. That helped ALOT. You can also DL Screeble in the market. That will help.

I have the same problem on my X2. You gotta go into settings and I forget where at the moment, but you have to enable hysterisis or something to that extent. I kick myself for not remembering.
As for ROM toolbox, don't use it.
COme on man you gotta remember haha what does hyterisis do and why not use rom toolbox
Sorry about that. Had to look up where DZK gave me some insight on that:

In CM9 (and I believe CM7) there is a setting under the brightness controls (I believe it's there, I don't have either running right now) called "hysteresis." Hysteresis is basically a "smoothing out" of what the light sensor sees and what value is actually sent to the brightness controls. Enabling that will make the screen react slower to changing light situations, but will disable (or should disable) flicker of the screen from the light sensor acting up. It might not be the problem, but it shouldn't hurt to try it out.

Also for CM7, I know you said you are on CM9, it says in the original post:
"16. Never user RomManager! (Yes it's included, but that's a CM7 thing and won't work with the DX2.)"
I've also read other areas that ROM manager is a no-no for the X2. Better to be safe than sorry.
Thanks Tally. I found where to play with hysteria and it was getting better but still doing it. I had my display or auto, for the phone to adjust display depending on the light. I turned that off and left it at 80% no matter the light and that fixed it. Wow just the auto brightness display could cause so much crap.
So i should just uninstall Rom manager, I dont usually use it anyways.
You stated in your previous post rom toolbox. Was it toolbox or manager that u are stating we shouldnt use?
Also is 300-350mb of ram ok for the phone to be using fairly regularly?
spoke to soon. It was working now its back to normal. I am ready to bodyslam this phone
Tally.. what settings did you do on your d2 to make it work correctly
Don't do it. Mine was doing exactly what you have described. Once you get it figured out, its ok. But yes... it will make you want to punt it across the room.
Your 300-350 mb of ram is ok.
I wouldn't delete it ROM manager. Just leave it as it is.

I had the best luck running CM9 mashed up- not supercharged or anything else. Others here had some luck with the V6 supercharger. Different phones just acted differently. But now that the beta version has the mash up in the build.prop just let it ride. Avoid Facebook and sites that have alot of media to load.
It really does work pretty good once you get a feel of how your phone reacts to it. Alot of the things are tolerable.
What do u mean by mashed up. Do you mean by cm9 or the aokp cm9. I am getting some really wacky stuff happening. System running real slow, screen not coming on usually from a call or sometimes when trying to unlock phone, now my VM wouldn't respond, apps taking a lot more time than usual to open. I don't know if this is the aokp from or the phone. I had the screen glitch w eclipse but not all the other stuff. I called verizon and they r willing to send out a replacement but just not sure if its the phone or rom
ok so this is weird and not sure if it is the problem. I was trying to play with anything that may affect how slow it is and once i flashed the aokp rom i downloaded a little later a cobalt theme for my theme chooser. Was running that all day and just now said " let me try putting it back to system theme" once the system them was in and everything loaded it was back to working quick again.
Now be it , it has only been a half hour but already it is what i saw first thing and the screen glitch is there but i can end calls w the power button. Would a theme make the phone act wacky?

Mashup is a flashable add on for roms. It is supposed to make things run smoother and help with the signal. Mashup is pre installed on CM9 alpha 5 and beta 1, I don't believe AOKP comes with it but Im not sure. And I had a bunch of issues with CM9, but Ive been running CM7 for months and love it. Maybe give CM7 a shot till the new ICS roms get debugged a little more.
Ok first off dont ever talk to verizon about your issues, always come to the forums... Always. Verizon doesn't know anything beyond complete stock. You need to spend time looking around the x2 forums read read read. Mashup is a mod that's right here in our dev forum very easy to apply just download the right version and flash in the appropriate recovery
Rolling AOKP in the north.
